Was told to take a seat, waited more than 15 minutes before having to ask for menus, still waited for them to be delivered. Coffee delivered with no cream when ordered with it. Went to ask for cream, waited another 8 minutes while the girl who said she would bring it stood at the counter appearing to be playing on her phone or otherwise. Food delivered to our group all except one meal, waited another 10 minutes plus for the last meal... and cutlery because although the diner was not fully seated, the cutlery was "in the dishwasher" while our food got cold and the kids ate with their hands. No refills on coffee were offered, no check in on the quality of our meals. Home fries despite being requested for them to be grilled with onions were deep fried with onion tossed on top. Attempted to charge me for a side of sausage when the kids meal comes with sausage. Was informed we had to leave (an hour and a half after being there) and waitress did not ask if we needed boxes, again I have to stress she did not check on us during consumption of our meal I had to go and ask for a box. Extreme anxiety filled experience. Definitely not an "old school diner" feel even though the decor and name says otherwise. Do better for others as we will not be back! read more

The restaurant was busy and only 1 server on and she was not addressing the tables in a huge rush took. It took forever for her to come back around. I asked for a drink 3 times and it was forgotten. I asked for water for my kids took her so long to come back to the table with the waters. The food was mediocre, fries were soggy and greasy! The portions were tiny for the prices. The family and I were in the mood for diner food, so we went a little out of our way to give this place a try. 2 burgers and a chili cheese dog later, we were stuffed! The burgers are creative and huge. The footlong hot dog was everything I needed from a hot dog. All were served with a large pile of what I imagine are handcut fries (skin on, super fresh tasting). We originally went into this with the intention of indulging donuts or a sundae for dessert, but we were all way too full. Luckily they didn't bring us a dessert menu. My daughter still insisted on a scoop of ice cream on the way out, so we went over to the Dairy Bar section. It's part of the restaurant but also operates as a standalone shop. Good customer service in both the diner and the dairy bar. Cute atmosphere. Decent prices. Delicious food - not gourmet, but really good for a diner. We will return! read more

Yesterday, my mom and I were coming back from a doctors appointment in Chatham, and we were ready to have lunch. She suggested Route 42, because not only is it a Windsor Staple, it's one of her favourite places to eat, so of course I said yes, and I haven't been here since I moved back to Windsor back in October, so we went in around noon, and we were greeted and seated within minutes. My mom knew what she wanted but I didn't, so I needed a few minutes to look at the menu. They have a wide selection of options for diner style food. I went with the Greek Chicken wrap with no olives and sweet potato fries instead of regular fries. Our waitress was friendly, and I was so hungry, but it took about 15 minutes and our food was hot, and out at our table. The music was playing tunes from the 1950's, the decor was nostalgic of that era as well, giving it an old classic diner feel, and our food was delicious. My mom commented on how she thinks they have one of the best burgers in town, and my wrap was delicious, the chicken wasn't dry at all and the veggies crunchy and my sweet potato fries were hot! The dipping sauce was really good, I wish I could've had more. So excited to be back in Windsor and be able to eat out at classic Windsor staples, like this one. This is one of those restaurants you come back to, to become a regular at. Next time I'll take my boyfriend and we can come for breakfast. read more

I came in just for shakes and donuts for dine in. Desserts get a five star. Fabulous service, so friendly. We were attended to right away on a busy Saturday night. Love the vibe, so retro. The decor is great with the patterned tiles. They had this retro Christmas music too- perfection! The shakes were sooooooo good (smores, creme brûlée) and the pink ladies float (cream soda and ice cream) was also great. They even gave us the can of cream soda so we could pour more. Place is surprisingly spacious and the booths are these long giant pillowy cushions that you just sink right into. The menu selection is ginormous so you're guaranteed to find at least one thing you'll like. Prices are reasonable. We got two shakes, two burgers a cheesy garlic bread appetizer and a dozen donuts for under $50. So you can spend less than $20 here for a meal and be quite content. I wasn't able to finish my food because the portion sizes are massive. We did have an issue with an inattentive waitress. My friend ordered the French toast, it was a piece of bread with an egg on top. The bacon was cooked to a hard crisp that easily could slice your gums in your mouth like butter. Wasn't edible. Waffles were covered drastically with a cheap tasting apple filling. It overwhelms the waffle which could have been ok. Trash. Overall. Don't buy the breakfast. However we confirmed with our waitress before ordering our food if there was enough time to catch our flight and we were told it was fine. It was our first time here. The place is bright and very clean. We were very impressed with the decor. Our orders were taken right away and food came out in a very timely manner. We both ordered different burgers. The food was fantastic. The quality and portions were perfect. However, that's the only good thing about our dinning experience. Our waitress was not overly concerned with us. She did not come back once to see how our meal was, nor did she come to see if we wanted a refill on our beverages (we did). She took a very long time in coming to clear our plates and when she did she dropped off our check without asking if we'd like anything else; and we did. NOTE: I will say that not all the waiters and waitresses were like that. I observed the others going to their tables countless times to tend to their customers' needs. We are not going to let one poor waitress ruin the fact the food and place were very good we will go back, and I would recommend this place to people. I will say this, if you feel your wait staff is not taking proper care of you, ask to speak to the manager. The food here is good bit they do tend to mess up consistently. I have been here three times now and every time a mistake has been made. Right now I got takeout and there are tomatoes on a sandwich that shouldn't be. I upgraded to a Ceasar salad that they put the dressing on for takeout! So disappointed! Wow has it gone down hill! Went there with my husband and two sons for lunch yesterday. We were seated immediately however it took waitress 20 minutes to acknowledge our existence. When she finally did she took our drink order and another table was waving their hands because they were seated before us. My youngest son ordered Shepard's pie (another item they used to be known for) and the cheese on top wasn't even melted. My liver and onions were covered in a salty gravy. For dessert we ordered the mini donuts ( another item they are known for) and you guessed it... no donuts. Then during the meal the waitress puts the cheque on the table before asking us if there is anything else we would like. Used to love this place. We will never be back. This is a 50's style diner. The selection of food is amazing, this place is very creative. I am obsessed with their deep fried Mac and cheese bites. The "In the Ghetto" is also pretty delicious. I came here on my birth date once and ordered a bacon Cesar. They didn't have clamato juice and so they sent someone to the store to get some for me and then they gave me free homemade donuts.
