Mike the Rototiller Guy just delivered a huge, steaming pile of (somewhat composted) horse manure to my house. I contacted him on Thursday night for a quote, and first thing Saturday morning, the stuff was delivered. Took him about 20 minutes to unload it in my driveway, and now we can all get on with our day. Another place I called wanted $200 to deliver, on top of the per-cubic-yard cost of the compost. Mike's was a much lower flat rate for 3 cubic yards. What I like about Mike: 1. He answered my emails promptly. 2. He showed up when he said he would. 3. He was very friendly. 4. His price was very reasonable. 5. He worked quickly. Armed with some confidence thanks to Mike's guidance, I set about doing this job myself. For me, I had leaky sprinklers. All the lowest sprinklers were oozing water all day long down the street. We had a hunch it was the valve, not sprinkler heads. I even replaced sprinkler heads myself but still had the leaking problem. So Mike validated that our hunch was correct, that the valves needed replacement, texted me pics of what I needed to buy, told me that I could search youtube for how to do it. It involves cutting PVC and and wiring. I've never worked with PVC before but the youtube videos gave me some confidence there. I had to make several trips to the hardware store, only because I was in search of valves that were higher quality than the orbit ones I had, and all of them looked like the wouldn't fit the old pipes. Mike recommended Rainbird Pro or Hunter. I texted him from the hardware store and he got right back to me that it wouldn't be a problem. So once I got all the stuff, spent some time watching youtube videos for sprinkler valve replacement, I spent another hour and a half or so doing the labor. A pro could do this in 30 minutes probably and maybe next time I need to, It won't take so long, but it was time well spent. When I was done, I sent a pic of the completed job and asked him if I was good to go. He gave me the thumbs up and I tested the system while we were on the phone. All set! So the bottom line: I spent a few hours total in trips to the hardware store and watching youtube videos. I spent about 20 minutes in texting/conversations with Mike. I spent about $100 in materials. The other option, Mike informed me, is that he would have charged me around $395 for this job to cover materials and labor. Mike saved me $300!!! What Licensed contractor does this??? MIKE DOES. Bit of a jerk over the phone. A lot of "that's now how this works" and "slow down" and "back up." His response to how soon can you get sod put in was "that's not how this works." I knew right then that it wasn't going to work. His website, where you're forced to input 5 pages of stuff, was well thought out but clunky and I never received the email I was supposed to, even after he manually sent it and confirmed my email. Yelpers must reach out to Mike for any field fixing/projects. I've never met such an honest businessman before. I called intending to ask for a quote, but instead Mike walked me through the fix and texted me items I'd need to complete the whole process. He also offered to help walk me through the process on the phone once I am working on it. Keep in mind, this was a Saturday! He could have been out with his family, but offered to help. He could have easily scheduled an appointment to my house and fixed it within 20 minutes but instead gave me the knowledge to fix the broken pipe. He has definitely saved me a lot of time, money and trouble. To put this in perspective: Time- It took me about an hour to drive and come back from Home Depot to purchase all items necessary. Since the pipe broke off on the top because it was cracked, the male side of the PVC pipe broken within the copper pipe. Mike advised on getting a nipple contractor and heat to get it out. The process took about 2 hours and I was finally able to get it out, I had to keep a blow dryer on the copper pipe so heat to help loosen the plastic. Upon getting the broken PVC out of the copper pipe, I started using the primer and glue to build the PVC pipe. Replacing the pipe took about an hour. With his knowledge, I was able to replace everything. Cost- Prior to calling Mike I had already visited Home Depot getting the replacement PVC pipe so I did not want to return all the items I got and exchange them for what Mike had recommended. Luckily it ended up working out! I spent about $50 on pipes, glue/primer, union, pvc cutter and nipple contractor. Alternative solution: The reason I knew why my water pipe was leaking was because my gardener turned off my water main due to a gushing pipe. He told me he would fix the leaking pipe for $120. I opted not to go with the help and do it myself. I was stuck in the middle of the process when the pipe broke off, I needed advice and that was when Mike came in to help guide me through the process. If you need any work done, reach out to Mike now. I'm sure he'll charge you a fair price and he's very knowledgeable. Mike is a stand up honest man. It's strange to have to write a bad review for someone who has had some great reviews and only a handful of terrible ones. I just have to accept that Mike is overworked, stressed, and selective about which jobs he wants and which ones he's willing to blow off. In my case it's the latter. He is very clear about the fact he will charge $225 just to come out whether he does any work or not. I rolled the dice and hoped he would at least solve one problem with the main leaky sprinkler in my Redondo Beach house. Instead he sent out a helper who essentially did nothing except unnecessarily show my daughter how to regulate the control panel (all information in the manual), talked a lot about how to save water, and how it would cost thousands of dollars to repair the sprinklers. As it turns out I did get someone else to fix the sprinklers for right around the same $225 that Mike charged to not fix anything. I would have let it go and written it off to experience except the final straw was his refusal to give me an invoice for the $225 we paid him. After politely asking for the invoice over several weeks (repeatedly through emails, phone calls, and text messages which I have documented) he has flat out ignored my requests. Like his other bad reviews spread over at least 4 Yelp sites, I'm sure he will spend more time denying it and defending himself than he would have spent had he just apologized and written an itemized invoice and sent it me. I suspect the reason is, he's embarrassed that he charged $225 for fixing nothing. He can't say he's never gotten my requests because I have them all saved. Sorry it took me so long MIKE... This guy is awesome! I decided to tear out, till up and put in my own sprinklers/yard. It was about 1500 sq feet total for front and back section. Mikes videos, guidance, suggestions and just overall knowledge was astounding. He dropped off 9 yards of compost around 12pm, I had just called him at 7am. He gave me some tips on the sprinklers and said my tilling was good. I used Pacific Sod which he recommended, that place is great too! The yard has been in for about 2 months now and looks amazing! I had to turn off the water for my entire house. The following day, on Sunday, I called Mike. He went out of his way and did me the huge favor of visiting my home. In simple English, he explained to me what the issue was (broken valves) and what needed to be done. He also explained how I can fix it. That Sunday, I took it on my own to fix it.
