A small army of the same group of smiling and on-time workers showed up each weekday morning. Over a period of under two months, they transformed our generous sized and "untamed mess" of a yard. I'm so glad I went with Compass. They had a big variety of skills from irrigation, pulling up an old brick patio (and replacing with same), harnessing a small hill of dirt and stones on one side of the house with railroad ties and gorgeous plantings. A plain, painted concrete staircase was (sshh!) disguised with brick "slices." Trees and smaller, overgrown shrubs were carefully trimmed or removed with our approval. What a great find!! I had a hillside project that I had been waiting years to do so I interviewed many landscapers. I did not know Compass, but found them on Yelp. The first time I met Rene, I know that he had the experience and the skill to do what I wanted. We turned a raw useless hillside into a lovely terraced seating, garden area including a Bocce ball court. I had concepts only, no plans and Rene helped me get the ideas down in a way that honestly worked out better than I had thought they would. We are older, so were concerned about covid etd, but everyone was very careful with masks etc etc. The foreman Eli was so helpful and nice it actually made this project a pleasure... Now that it is done, I kind of miss them :). Also, pricing was very fair.. I did not have to play games, everything was upfront with no surprises. Full disclosure I work in construction industrial/retail development, but did not have contacts in residential mid-size projects. Fantastic results from Compass Landscape and crew. Complete backyard overhaul, albeit a relatively small space near the beach. Received competitive bids and they were definitely reasonable. Clearly a better alternative than the landscape companies coming out of Hollywood and West LA. Big positives: They have their own crew all employed by Compass which means they can balance the work among other jobs. This means a single point of contact. The crew was fantastic at keeping the area tidy. We removed a large fence bordering our neighbor and they were very conscious of the time spent as well as keeping the neighbor's property clean at the end of every work day. They are local to the South Bay area which allows quite a bit of flexibility to moving resources and access. Craftsmanship was very good. There was a lot of time spent on the masonry and they spent quite a bit concentration on the detail. I would rather have add an extra week at the end of the schedule than have someone rush to complete. Keep in mind: They have multiple jobs and appear to have specialties amongst the trades. This is not a bad thing at all but could mean there are is a day where minimal work takes place. I would prefer this over a group who are all a jack of all trades. This gap in time could pester people who likely do not understand. The space gets dirty as well as bordering spaces. Given the proximity to neighbors, I would periodically hose down the area. This was not an expectation I could place on the crew. read more

I've been thinking about redoing my front and backyard for a couple of years.  I finally got off my butt and started looking at various landscaping contractors to do my front and back yards.  I needed a new patio to replace old and worn concrete, a new back lawn and sprinklers, adding pavers for a front walkway and a redo of my parkway.  After some research and contacting friends, I contacted Rene Espino of Compass Landscape Construction to discuss and get an estimate.  He was very responsive and came right over to take a look at the property.  After going over some rough drawings, taking measurements and discussing options he let me know he would give me an estimate in a couple of days. I received the estimate and went with Rene to see some of his other projects in PV area.  I noted that he does very nice work.  After reviewing my other options, i decided to go with Compass.  It was the right decision.  After choosing various options of pavers and stone type, Rene and his crew started the work.  His crew of 4-6 was very professional and did an excellent job of removing all the old concrete, old lawn and overgrown plants; laying pavers, stone and gravel; and sprinklers and new marathon sod. I was able to watch a lot of the work most days and the team always worked hard starting promptly at 8am and working through 4pm with a break for lunch.  Rene typically stopped by most days to make sure progress and the planned work was being done.  After every day, the property was cleaned up and equipment put away. After a few weeks working Monday through Friday, the work was completed and the site cleaned up.  I am very happy with the result.   Rene and team did excellent quality work for a fair price.  I plan to work with Rene on Phase 2 early next year to add a few more items and some drought tolerant plantings and am looking forward to the completion of the project.  Thanks Rene and Compass Landscape Construction. read more

We had a great experience with Rene and his team. We have a small backyard (~800 sq ft) that was completely unimproved, and we had personally drawn up rough plans. Rene quickly understood the vision, was knowledgeable about how to achieve what we wanted, and provided a reasonable quote. It took several months to find a window to perform the work due to inclement weather through the winter, but once his team started, they stayed on track, and despite a few changes due to availability of certain sizes of plants and personal choices of stones for our water feature, Rene was very fair with his pricing. We also greatly appreciated that his weekly invoices were very clear in conveying what work was being billed, which was always in accordance with exactly what had been completed thus far. Additionally, because we live in an HOA, we were impressed with the professionalism of the crew in cleaning up each day and never leaving raw materials out front of the house over night. The job was completed within the estimated time frame and the landscaping looks beautiful. It turned out better than we envisioned. Rene was also great about quickly coming back to address a few issues that arose after the job was complete (e.g., the original pump for the water feature was insufficient, and they added a second pump and rerouted the hoses, along with taking care of a few other misc concerns). The job included a new irrigation system, decking and pad for a jacuzzi, low voltage lighting, retaining walls, two different types of turf, fruit trees, plants, outdoor shower plumbing, new gate, and some posts for a shade area. Rene and another company were very close in price and capability. We had a better feeling about Rene and the sense that he had more invested in the final results of our yard coming out the way we wanted. He was honest about a start date, telling us that he was booked up for a couple months. More important to me was that he started the project when he said he would which is what he did. Compass worked at my house for about 6 weeks steady with a break for the holiday. The crew showed up every day, worked all day, and cleaned their work area daily. The guys were all courteous, respectful, and friendly to my family and I and all seemed to get along well laughing and joking throughout the day. Rene would stop by every other day or so to check on progress and see if we had any questions or requests. During the course of the project he responded to any questions or additional work positively and always had something constructive to add to our ideas. After our project was completed we reached out a few times with questions and he always responded promptly and sorted out any issue or question we had to our satisfaction. There was never a time during this project that I regretted our decision to chose Compass. I'm extremely happy with the work Rene and his crew did with the front and backyard at my home in Mar Vista, CA. They were thorough, on time and the crew worked diligently to accomplish the design.
