We decided to get out of town for a date night and ended up at Roth Social. After reading some Yelp reviews mentioning unfriendly or inattentive staff, I have to disagree. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted right away and promptly seated (I had a reservation, but honestly didn't need one around 8:30pm--there were several tables open). For drinks, I ordered the 1915 Elder Fashioned ($20) and my wife had the Peaches and Dreams ($20). Both cocktails were perfectly crafted and absolutely delicious. We started with the Argentine empanadas served with bone marrow and chimichurri--two good-sized empanadas for $24. Great flavor and a solid way to kick things off. For my entrée, I ordered the hanger steak cooked medium--it came out perfect. It was served with Roth Fries, which might honestly be the best garlic fries I've had in a long time. Fresh garlic, Parmesan, parsley... just done right. The steak was topped with chimichurri and came with two dipping sauces--everything worked. My wife ordered the Kung Pao Street Noodles with grilled prawns ($36), and she loved it. Overall, great atmosphere, friendly staff, and a standout experience. Interesting restaurant that is unfortunately mediocre. Nice decor, staff was friendly, but the food was underwhelming. Started with the worst strawberry margarita I have ever had. It was red, but that was as close to strawberry as it got. The artichoke pasta was good, no complaints there. The c.a.b. hanger steak was a HUGE disappointment. The first 2 bites tasted very fishy, almost spoiled,which is not what you want in a steak. The chimichurri sauce was oddly dry. We came in at 2pm with no reservations and, despite the restaurant not even being full, somehow got seated at the worst table in the house... the booth alllll the way by the bathrooms. Lucky us. This place is an absolute gem. Everything on the menu is specifically curated from the owners of the restaurant who travel and find recipes they want to have on their menu. Every single dish is thoughtful and tasty beyond belief! Our server was so warm and helpful with explaining every menu item and giving us great recommendations. The restaurant has different areas you can hang out in- patio, bar, & seating area that is well lit yet warm enough to create the type of environment that makes you want to stay for a long time. The Cesar salad was unremarkable- it had roasted capers that brought a salty crisp to the dish and the baby kale was perfectly prepped and dressed in a way that made it not even taste like you were eating kale at all. My only critique of the food is the salad that came with the chicken was off. It was sour and fell flat. Everything else was amazing with well balanced flavor. We have been huge Roth fans since it opened. We've been many many times but honestly the last couple time which took place in the last couple months, the music has been way too clubby and loud. Everything about Roth is great except the loud rally clubby tunes. Last time I was there- I could hear the bartended uttering every word in the rapping song that did have some cuss words in it. We stopped going to Ateium for the same reason. I realize a bar can be fun with loud music but I think you're forgetting you're also a dining experience and I would think most diners just want soothing music to dine too, not loud rapt clubbin music. We think we are done with that vibe. Sorry. I know I'm not the only one thinking this, we've heard this from others and not just "boomers" are saying this. I just spoke to my friend's daughter who is 30- and she said the same thing. She said it wasn't comfortable trying to talk with the loud pumpin music. I hope you consider playing music that's easier to find to. I got the feeling that the music was just to make the staff have fun- not caring about the patrons. Maybe do a survey to see others thoughts or ask diners while they're dining if they like the loud music. We LOVE the entrees and the fresh bar cocktails but we do not love the uncomfortable music. read more

First time here! Can't believe it's taken me this long. Atmosphere is great. If you sit in a booth and look towards bar... not the street... it feels like you are in another city other than Turlock. Love that. Ok, we Started with heirloom burrata salad. Delish. The pistachios were unique to set this dish apart from other restaurants. ordered bread to soak up the leftover juice as it was so good. I know things have changed.. but, with a restaurant of this caliber, I feel a basket of 4 slices of bread should be complimentary. I was not a fan of the thickly cut rosemary bread and tomato infused oil. something was off with the oil. The main dish I chose was the spicy pasta with added shrimp. This dish is not for the weak people who think Taco Bell is spicy. It is spicy! But I love spice. Spice is life!! The shrimp were great if you enjoy the chargrilled flavor, however, for me.. it was overwhelming for the dish. ** with the addition of a protein... 4 large shrimp be prepared to pay more. We also ordered the salmon dish. It was perfectly cooked. Their selection of wine is good. Now, onto service. We liked our server and her personality. However, her knowledge of items was not where I would expect for a restaurant of this stature. she was pregnant so I understand if she can't eat or drink certain things... but she should know a bit more and not have to stop and walk away to ask each time. here's the really odd thing, we were still finishing up our dinner, (at least 1/2 left along with our Rombauer wine bottle), (which she never came to pour for us when glasses were low) she never asked if we wanted dessert. She said " I'll put the bill here, don't worry about rushing to leave, just putting it here so it's ready" Typically, you ask if your guests would like dessert. We had to ask her. She was NOT busy at all. In fact, we saw her many times just chatting with the hostess. We ended up ordering the Basque strawberry cheesecake. I've never had that and it is VERY different than regular cheesecake which I think she should have been able to describe. I think we would have ordered differently. It was much drier. Not as creamy and dense as your usual cheesecake. it truly needed more strawberry's and strawberry drizzle in my opinion. I'm not saying I didn't like it... I'm just saying I literally had to google it while eating because it didn't seem right to me. seemed like maybe ricotta was added? No.. it's just the process how they bake. This is part of what makes me a foodie extraordinaire. I'm curious, and I notice textures and tastes. I would definitely go here again if asked. The $61 dollar steak we ordered was all tendon, the waiter was kind enough to take it back to the chef which we received the response of "yes the chef said it was a tendon" but we received no solution, We tried to pick at the steak but there was no saving it. Was recently in the area for work and planning to visit another local spot for dinner. After the job ran long we ended up giving this spot a try and I'm so glad we did! My friend Katie and I arrived 30 min before closing on a Thursday and after asking if the kitchen was still open and promising that we would be quick were shown to a booth. Upon being seated we asked for a couple recommendations and quickly ordered the chicken lollipops and a flank steak to split. The appetizer arrived quickly. The chicken was perfectly flavored with a nice mix of sweet and spicy and served on a bed of slaw. After we devoured that dish the steak arrived. It was cooked a perfect medium rare and was served with fries that had garlic and Parmesan sprinkled on top. This was the perfect late night meal to split for two. My wife and I tried this place for the first time last night and it was amazing. The food was delicious! We ordered the Korean chicken bao buns as an appetizer. Very delicious and packed a little bit of a spicy kick to them but not overwhelming. The chicken was crispy KFC style like all Korean fried chicken is. They were very fresh and came with 3 bao buns. You could make them a meal by doubling up the order, 5/5 stars. The service was absolutely delightful. Our wait person Joey, 5/5 stars, was attentive and extremely helpful. In fact, I was indecisive about what I wanted and he recommended the Spicy Vodka Pasta and adding a protein of hangar steak. The pasta (fettuccine I think), was a bit thicker and rounder than your typical fettuccine, but it tasted home made and perfectly cooked. The hanger steak also perfectly cooked to my medium rare request and very tender, and that vodka sauce just brought all of the flavors together and made the whole dish pop with flavor, this dish was 5/5 stars. My wife had the Kung pao street noodles with an added protein of wild prawns. She said the noodle had a certain flavor that she didn't care for and couldn't identify. She gave the noodles 3.5/5 stars and the added wild prawns 5/5 stars. I didn't try her dish so I couldn't say. The bread pudding dessert was exclusively my wife's partaking. I was too full and had I eaten any more I would have been uncomfortable. My wife gave it 5/5 stars, said it was delicious, but said it should have come with more than 1 scoop of ice cream LOL. All-in-all, our overall experience is what you should expect from a good restaurant...very enjoyable and we will return. The only knock on this establishment was the noise level. It was extremely LOUD! We reserved a table for Friday night at 7:00pm just to give an idea of time frame. There is a bar area right next to dining area and the music was playing extremely loud, almost like we were in a dance club yet I didn't see any dance floor. Everyone in the restaurant had to talk extremely loud just to be heard over the music which increased the noise level. There was a brief spell where the music subsided and the music volume dropped dramatically and you could hear everyone's speaking volume also drop. The noise level is the only reason this place got 4 stars instead of 5. read more

I was really disappointed with my experience. I want to start by saying the hosts and bartenders were incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the food was delicious. This was actually my third time celebrating my birthday dinner here, so I had been looking forward to it all week. The reason I'm giving two stars is solely because of the service we received at our table. Our server came across as rude and unfriendly, which made the entire dinner feel uncomfortable and awkward. It wasn't a busy night, and while everyone has off days, that shouldn't affect the level of service guests receive. After finishing our entrees, we handed over our card to pay and decided to skip dessert because we didn't feel it was worth staying. Instead, we went to another local restaurant to finish celebrating my birthday. Our bill was around $110 (expecting to spend more but decided to not order more drinks or dessert), and unfortunately the service didn't reflect the level of hospitality you'd expect for that kind of dining experience. I'm especially disappointed because I've always enjoyed this restaurant and have chosen it for special occasions in the past. Went here on a Monday. First the lady waiting on us was very kind . We waited for 45 minutes before just to order appetizers . After another 45 minutes our appetizers finally arrived. That was after my wife finally asked about them. The place seemed short staffed. It was at least another half hour before we received our meals. The appetizers were very good. Once our food arrived, it was pretty good. The spicy vodka pasta was good but the salmon lacked flavor and was not seasoned well. For the price the place lacked organization. I forgot what's in them but they had like a candied pickled jalapeño that was just divine! Then I tried the strawberry fields salad! Sooooo good drool worthy. Delicious dressing along with mixed greens, juicy strawberries, plump blue berries, with blue cheese and candied walnuts! Can't wait to have this salad again when I'm in town again. By the time I finished the salad I barely could eat my C.A.B steak and masked potatoes. I did have a couple pieces and a bite of the potatoes and it was cooked to perfection! The bao bread was amazing if it was made in house like she said. I was told yes, however, in the 3 confirmation calls I made to the restaurant no one told me that the music plays constantly in the entire restaurant.
