With about 150 people expected, this was a big event and we wanted the food to feel just right. Unfortunately, our go-to caterer was out of town, so we reached out to Empanada Times--and we are so glad we did. Madeline, whose mom was actually our neighbor growing up, welcomed us with a full catering menu. Even though her restaurant is all the way in New Jersey and we're in New York, we knew it would be worth it. We ordered pernil, arroz con gandules (party rice), chicharrón de pollo, and Madeline's famous potato salad. Let me tell you--we were not disappointed. We had to sneak a taste before serving, and from the first bite, we were transported right back to Puerto Rico. The chicharrón de pollo was everything we hoped for--crispy, boneless, seasoned perfectly, and even better with a squeeze of lime and a cold Medalla beer. The rice was rich, flavorful, and reminded us of Doña María's classic Puerto Rican cooking. The pernil? Juicy, tender, perfectly seasoned. And the potato salad--flavorful, creamy, and just delicious. We had leftovers for days and didn't mind one bit! My sister, who's a teacher, even brought containers to share with her coworkers, and I brought plenty home for my husband. He's very picky about food and who cooks it--but this time? He dove right in without hesitation, and didn't have one negative thing to say (and trust me, he would have!). We're already looking forward to visiting Madeline's restaurant in NJ--or maybe catching a food truck somewhere soon. Thank you, Empanada Times, for helping us honor our father with the flavors of home.

We ordered fish & chips and a Cuban sandwich. Bold moves, apparently. The fish was so tasteless, I think I offended it by taking a bite. Honestly, frozen supermarket fish would've put up more of a fight. The fries? Also running for the "most bland" award. And the Cuban sandwich--ham, cheese, and shredded pork so thin I had to squint to find the protein. A whisper of meat. A ghost of flavor. But wait, it gets better. A Snapple? $4.00. For that price, I expected someone to at least open it for me. Instead, zero service--and yet, the screen still flipped around asking for a tip. The audacity? Inspiring. Just not in the way they think

This is a clean casual eating restaurant with a colorful upbeat vibe, Spanish wall art and music. They have cafeteria style steam trays and some tables. I think they do a lot of take-out. Not having a lot of Cuban food experience, I did recognize the empanadas ($3,95), fried pork, red and black beans and yellow rice before settling on a Cuban sandwich ($12.95).The sandwich was just what I needed at the time. Hot, flavorful and the ham and pork was hot, well seasoned and juicy. The bread had a crispy cover but soft on the inside. I understand that the Abuela still does some of the cooking. I usually eat around 3pm so at 5:30 I was starving. I'll be eating more Cuban food in the future!

I can't remember a single bad experience with the possible exception of when they were first figuring out how to serve to go orders during COVID and they forgot part of our order. My husband put our name in for a party of four and gave his phone number for the text notification but the hostess accidentally entered us as a party of two. Thankfully, the table that was ready was large enough for four but it could have caused an issue. As a note, she remembered and realized she mistyped it and apologized immediately. Our waiter was friendly, though the service had a few hiccups. My chicken quesadilla (which I ordered as my entrée) came out well before everyone else's meals. When boxing leftovers, he asked whether I wanted the sides, sour cream, and salsa included. I said no, but when I opened the container the next day, everything had been packed together anyway. Food: The chicken quesadilla was delicious and generously filled with shredded chicken. Drinks: The frozen strawberry margarita was excellent. It was filled to the brim and stronger than what you typically get at a restaurant. Overall, I'm chalking the service issues up to it being a busy Saturday night. We'd still happily return to Jose Tejas whenever we're in the area.

There is a small little parking lot that can fit 4-5 cars right off the main road. Inside was decorated with cute Christmas decor, and the domestic violence scene from Godfather Part 1 casually playing on the TV while I'm trying to eat my food. Good variety of options of appetizers, small shared plates, pizza, fresh pasta, and entrées to choose from our group decided to split the popular pizza. Then everyone offended for themselves - our table ordered the gnocchi with pesto and chicken Milanese, chicken parmigiana with penne, Arancini, and the "focaccia"/house garlic bread. The Arancini was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and luscious on the inside. The pizza was a perfect sweet and savory combo of burrata, prosciutto, and balsamic glaze. The pesto was a bit thin and ate a little soupier than I prefer. Buyer beware with the focaccia - although it's called focaccia, it's also listed under the pizzas so it was served thin and crispy like a pizza rather than thick and fluffy like we had been expecting. I would absolutely return again to try all the other dishes, especially the shared plates, different pizzas, and other fresh pasta offerings.
