I came all the way from California for St. Patrick's Day and somehow ended up having one of the most memorable Italian dinners of my life at Rosebud on Taylor Street. The night started with me confidently ordering... a salad. Just a salad. The host paused, looked at me, and said, "That's it?" while the rest of my table went full Italian feast mode. I was already laughing and also slightly questioning my own decisions. But I absolutely made the right call. The burrata and prosciutto with arugula salad was hands down one of the best salads I've ever had. Fresh, flavorful, perfectly balanced. I'm still thinking about it. Everyone at the table ordered something different. The bruschetta had a real flair for flavor. The cacciatore was incredible. There was one more dish that was so good I honestly forgot the name because we were too busy enjoying ourselves. The drinks were also great. The kind where you say you'll just have one and suddenly you're fully living in the moment. What really made the experience unforgettable though was the atmosphere and the staff. The managers were dressed in sharp black and brown suits, which gave the whole restaurant this classic old Italian movie vibe. Not in a cheesy way. In a timeless, elegant, you feel like you just walked into a scene kind of way. At the same time, the servers were warm, attentive, and constantly checking on us. Everyone made us feel welcome, joked with us, and treated us like we had been coming there for years. It felt personal and genuine. Ending my Chicago trip with dinner here before flying home the next day was the perfect finale. Amazing food, great drinks, incredible hospitality, and an atmosphere I won't forget. The service staff is knowledgeable, attentive, friendly and courteous; never intrusive. The ambiance is classic and delightfully Rosebud. It came with a house pasta which was also delicious. I wanted to try the tiramisu however it was priced $20 for a slice and I was afraid to commit... There is valet parking available. The food is authentic and delicious. The cocktails (mango martini) is my favorite. Wow we had a DELICIOUS meal and wonderful time at Rosebud for our anniversary! Jaime, our server, was exceptional who offers excellent recommendations and ensures prompt service. I ordered the chicken parm and asked for his advice on pairing it with pasta and wine. He suggested vodka pasta and The Prisoner Cabernet, and the combination was absolutely wonderful. He also recommended Cacio e Pepe with shrimp which was also wonderful! He also highly recommended the banana cream pie with pistachio ice cream and it was also absolutely wonderful. I celebrated my 80th birthday here last night with 15 family members but Jose AP, our server, felt like one of the family. He was SO efficient, friendly and accomodating. Service was quick but not rushed. I married into an Italian family over 50 years ago and NO ONE compares to my mother in laws cooking so we never eat out at Italian places. HOWEVER, this is somewhere I'd go over and over to experience a meal like she served. Everyone said their order was perfect from appetizer to main course. I had the short ribs over polenta and both were cooked to perfection. Polenta was creamy, meat was fork tender and gravy was so delicious. I asked for broccolini as a side and was accomodated even though it wasn't part of the menu. They put us in a corner area where we could talk and hear (some of us are hearing impaired). It was perfect and the entire restaurant felt and intimate. Arrived early and met our niece at the bar. My wife and I (in our 50s) spent a long weekend in Chicago recently. We chose Rosebud based on positive word of mouth online. When we got to the neighborhood, we found that there was a street festival going on. The restaurant had set up a large pavilion outside, which was quite busy. The hosts stand inside sent us outside, outside sent us back inside (we didn't want to sit outside anyway), it was a bit chaotic. Inside was nearly empty. I'm not sure if their online menu was out of date or if they had pared it down due to the festival, but everything we'd planned on ordering wasn't on the menu; we rolled with it. Our waitress was...disinterested, to say the least. It took 45 minutes to get our appetizer, calamari; it was fine. Entrees followed in about two minutes, so we never even got to enjoy the app. My wife ordered ravioli with the marinara on the side. They were large and cheese-filled, and they generously gave her practically a soup bowl full of sauce; she generally enjoyed them. I ordered veal parm; it was huge, and came with a side of penne with basic marinara. That marinara really needed some work; it was doing the heavy lifting of everything on the table, and was unexceptional. Seriously, it's something that is very simple to make, or there are quite good versions at the grocery store, and it was very middle of the road, Prego quality sauce. We got an order of tiramisu to go, and it was really the best thing we ate. Atmosphere of the restaurant was the best part, had that real old-school, wood-and-mirror vibe. Shame that the service and food don't match. I'll cut them some slack because of the festival, but when I drop $200 for a meal, I expect way more out of the service and the food. read more

It was a sunny Friday afternoon, and we had just arrived to visit our daughter in Chicago. She suggested we go to Little Italy to have a nice dinner after a long drive. She took us to Rosebud, and boy are we glad she did. This place is the real deal! When we arrived, we were quickly shown to our table where our waitress, Teodora, greeted us with water and bread. The atmosphere is white tablecloth and has a very "old school" Italian vibe. Teodora was very helpful explaining the menu to us, suggesting to split the Sunday House Salad three ways instead of ordering three of them. That alone was a lifesaver, as we had no idea how large the salad was going to be. What a great salad! And then...we got down to business. My wife and daughter split an order of chicken parmigiana, which had to be the largest plate of chicken parm I've ever seen. It was simply amazing and they ate every last bite of it. I had the eggplant parmigiana. I was really hungry, so I enjoyed all of it. Rosebud totally nailed it. Both entrees came with a side of pasta and more of their wonderful Marinara sauce. We left Rosebud full, happy and already planning our next trip back. If you love great, authentic Italian food and thoughtful service, you can't go wrong at Rosebud. The price is right. Went here for a company lunch and was wowed! Such a cute small Italian restaurant with rich history. The food ( Chicken Parmesan and Chicken Marsala) was amazing and tasted very fresh. I wish the waitress was a little bit more attentive and not as "cold", nonetheless, the experience was still amazing. I will definitely be back to try out the their typical dinner menu. read more

ROSEBUD ON TAYLOR IS BACK!!! So happy to hear it has reopened. I've traveled the world and eaten everywhere, but theres nothing like returning to a legendary Chicago establishment. All of the new school Chicago places need to visit the OG and take notes. The staff was accommodating for a last minute, late evening reservation. Not only did they stay the course as if we were the first customers of the day, we felt like we were eating in someone's home. The ambiance and decor nails everything you expect from white tablecloth Italian. The food? Everything we had was outstanding: Appetizers: Bruchetta, Minestrone, and Sausage and Peppers (tremendous) Drinks: Martinis and Shirley Temple's Entrees: The chicken cacciatore was phenomenal, the vodka rigatoni was superb, and the arrabiatta cavatelli was bursting with flavor witb just the right amount of spicy. All of the pasta was cooked to perfection. The lamb chops could have used a little char, but were massive and melt in your mouth, paired witb a buttery, lemon sauce. Dessert: The tirimisu was decadent and fresh. Above all, great Italian food is measured by the SERVICE. Genuinely friendly, welcoming, and attentive service is what set Rosebud apart from so many great Chicago options. Massive portions, we took a ton home and enjoyed a great evening. We popped in on a Friday night just after 5 and were lucky enough to get a very nice, cozy table without a wait. Once we walked in and saw the ambiance, we knew we'd like the restaurant. Subdued warm lights combined with the tasteful décor made for a relaxed dining experience. Our table had meat lasagna, chicken oreganato and eggplant parmesan. We were hoping to get the chicken vesuvio but had a tight schedule and could not spare the extra time needed for its preperation, but the oreganato was spectacular!! All the dinners were among the best we've had. The staff were great. They were prompt with menus and water refills, and were true professionals. Always near but never hovering. We love this restaurant, and it is definitely on our list to revisit next time we're in the neighborhood and want Italian!! read more

Wonderful experience here. I was surprised to see how empty it was. The service was great and the food was delicious! Very hefty portions. I love the old school Italian, dimly lit, white tablecloth vibe. We brought a toddler and they were very accommodating. It seems like this would be a great place for date night! We also saw someone celebrating a birthday. Apparently this is the OG Rosebud! Lots of history here. I had the chopped salad which was so refreshing and filling! Packed with veggies and stacked high! No way is this for one person. I took more than half of it home! The best thing I tasted was the bolognese. Holy cow (and veal). Loved the fresh ricotta on top adding a nice creamy texture. We also took home what we couldn't eat and I ended up eating it a couple hours later because it was that good. I think the Rosebud is worth a visit if you are in town! The 24.99 three course price fixee lunch special might be the best value in the city. Soon after being seated was treated to intense garlicky buttery rolls. Then the meal. You can choose amongst several options for each course. I started with the Caesar Salad, with the most crisp yet delicate croutons I'd ever experienced and top grade shaved Parmesan. Then for the main I went with the Eggplant Parmesan. I actually don't like eggplant much cause it is often mushy and watery. This here isn't that at all, and was slightly crunchy with great flavor and absolutely covered with mozzarella cheese browned to perfection. Finally for dessert I picked Tiramisu. They didn't hold back on the rum! You might feel tipsy after this one, so creamy too. Just every bite was heaven. The portions were more than generous, I am a very hearty eater and I could barely finish. Best salad, eggplant Parmesan, and tiramisu I've ever had! Great low key traditional dimly lit setting and friendly staff too. I was closer I would be going at least once a week. read more

I've loved Rosebud since I was a kid, ever since my parents took me there for the first time when I was like 7. I was excited to be back for the first time since they reopened, as it's my favorite place to eat in the city. Unfortunately, I noticed some changes within the restaurant that I did not particularly care for. :( The music in the background, normally jazz and miscellaneous Italian music that conveyed the warm, intimate vibe that I loved about Rosebud was replaced by a mix of pop(?) and other genres that I, personally, did not feel quite matched the traditional ambiance that I so cherished. The music was also quite loud, which took away from the atmosphere. Instead of the bread they used to serve at the tables with parmesan and oil, a classic Italian restaurant combo, they served rolls that, although somewhat tasty, were extremely buttery and were almost nauseating to consume at times. Besides for those issues, I still loved the classic setup of the restaurant, my seat next to the window, the service, the food I ordered (Chicken Vesuvio!), and the drink I had alongside it. After observing all the changes, I was worried the recipe might have changed for the Chicken Vesuvio, but I was extremely satisfied with how the chicken came out. Overall, it is still a lovely place to eat in Chicago, but I was somewhat sad and disappointed with some of the changes that have been made. But the food is still yummy and if you enjoy Italian food, you will probably love Rosebud!!! It's a neighborhood classic and I take everyone there when they visit Chicago for the first time! The Rosebud was my introduction to "fine dining" back in 2002. Sadly, you don't hear much matter about them these days. You get a classic Italian vibe here, with the mood set right, lights dimly lit and Frank Sinatra playing all night long. It doesn't get better than that on Taylor Street. The service for the most part was great. We made reservations and we immediately got seated upstairs. It took a little bit to get our order in, but luckily we weren't in a rush. Once we were able to get our food in, everything else went very smoothly. They start you off with bread, with olive oil and Parmesan cheese already on the table. I truly look forward to this set up anytime I'm eating Italian food. It's absolutely the best way to start the night. With a glass of wine of course. We also ordered their bruschetta. The tomatoes tasted fresh and coated in olive oil, topped with Parmesan cheese, fresh basil. So much flavor packed in these little bad boys. They also came with olives which I don't like. I also ordered their minestrone. I've definitely had better minestrone, but this one was ok. It was also served lukewarm. My wife ordered their Tortellini Carbonara. It came with Parmesan cream, prosciutto, mushrooms and sweet peas. This one was okay. The Parmesan cream tasted similar to Alfredo. But the pasta was cooked perfectly and the dish was very filling. I ordered their Spaghetti & Meatballs. I know I know, a very simple dish. How boring. But there's something about this dish, and not just here, that I love. The marinara that they make at Rosebud is so damn delicious. I like that they've been so consistent with the flavor of this sauce for at least twenty years. Oh the nostalgia. For food, we had the seafood salad, which was alright but unfortunately the seafood was not the freshest that Chicago has to offer. Also, the scungilli (snail) could have been shaved more thinly, so as to catch the very flavorful lemon vinaigrette. We also had a side of momma's meatballs, which were lovely and perfectly cooked! The restaurant itself is somewhat dark, but otherwise I appreciated all the wood and brown tones. The vibe from the waitstaff felt strange - everyone appeared to be running around and on edge.
