The restaurant is not very big but it is nice looking and very clean. Not an extensive menu but what they make they do well. I had the crab cake appetizer and the grilled romaine salad. Both were excellent. Hubby had the Pork Chop with collards and butternut squash risotto and he loved it. We got a tiramisu dessert to go. Next time we will save room for the bourbon bacon brownie. Wonderful lunch with friends. Everybody's food was delicious, particularly the brisket sandwich and the meatloaf sub. Their beer list is extensive and quirky in the best way. Our waiter, Taylor, was incredibly helpful, offering us tastes of various options and his knowledge of the list. Without being asked, he kept track of which couple ordered what, and presented the bill divided exactly right -- even to our various wine and beer choices. So all in all, a triumph of food, drink, and service. Only suggestion would be to turn down the air conditioning over the window -- but autumn weather is so changeable, I'm not surprised it got a little cool that day. read more

Based on the reviews, we stopped in for a light lunch while on a road trip. What a pleasant surprise! We had the "daily combo" which was a cup of soup, half a sandwich, and a small salad. This is my new favorite restaurant in Morganton... Our waitress was just as fantastic as our food. We started with the fried oysters with pimento cheese grits which is a MUST have. It's not an overly large appetizer to ruin your dinner either.. Just perfect. I ordered the scallops entree which was prepared Thai style and my husband order the Pork Shank.. Both came out in an excellent timely manner and were incredible. I can't say enough positive things about this place... We sat out on the outdoor patio which had the best atmosphere. There were even couches/chaise lounges to hang out on with your wine afterwards :) Service was some of the best we've ever had... Definitely eat here!!! read more

I gave a 3 star rating for 2 reasons, value is just not there, I had the salmon and risotto which was prepared very nicely but the portion size was small for the $25 price. At least give a little larger serving of risotto and squash to make the portion look like a good value. In addition my dish was served warm and I prefer my food delivered to the table hot. I would have loved a glass of Pinot Noir but at $11 a glass I could not afford to. read more

I always go to Root & Vine for special occasions and in the summertime, as they have a wonderful patio. Today was my birthday, I went with a friend. First, we had a waitress who forgot to place our order to the kitchen. Therefore, she offered us a free appetizer as we waited. When the food was brought out, I had siracha sauce on my burger and had specifically asked for no siracha. We had a meeting at work soon and I did not want to make a big deal of it, so I just let it go. I had a bite or two left of my burger when I discovered a small, black course hair on the side of my ranch dressing touching the pimento cheese from my burger. As soon as the waitress returned I brought it to her attention and said ma'am I just wanted to let you know they included Siracha sauce on the burger and I just found this hair on my food and it's clearly not mine, my hair is light and very long. She returns and apologizes saying I am going to discount your food to 1/2 price, is that okay and I said no I feel like It's really not I should not have to pay for it at all. The manager quickly comes to our table and proceeds to say you ate the burger, I can only give you 1/2 off of the food. I said ma'am, I know I ate the burger, but did not discover it until I was nearly finished and feel I should not have to pay for this. The manager proceeds to say, "well all of our kitchen staff wear hair nets and beard nets", so I am not sure how this would have happened or something to that nature. I kindly said ma'am are you trying to insinuate I am not being truthful, and she replies no I am just saying it could have fallen off of clothes and is uncontrollable and still refused to take the meal off. I said it is what it is and she proceeded to just wait there staring at me. Had I discovered the hair sooner, there is NO WAY I would have taken another bite of the food, absolutely disgusting. I had no problem paying for whatever food I had to, it was the principal of offering good customer service and acknowledging an error. Arguing with a customer over hair in food is just simply tasteless, especially in a restaurant of that quality, we aren't at the local Wendy's. I realize people are not always truthful and probably have made absurd requests for discounts, but I was just an honest person wanting good customer service. This is disappointing and I won't be back, nor will the people that I have told who also enjoyed the place. read more

Celebrated my birthday again at my favorite restaurant in Morganton. Started off with a few "Wake up calls"( bourbon, sherry, smoked ice cube and candied bacon garnish). We stopped here while passing through town on our way to Bryson City. We chose this place based on its #1 spot on yelp and were very underwhelmed. The service was not good. After seating us, the hostess came over to us three separate times to tell us our waiter should be with us shortly. It took him a solid 10-15 minutes to come introduce himself and take our order despite it being 2 in the afternoon and not at all busy. Can't help but think he decided to take a break before handling our order. Not appreciated since we were starving and eager to eat. The food took a bit to come out. I ordered a Cuban sandwich which is my go-to whenever a restaurant has it on the menu. The contents of the sandwich were dry and hardly melted together. As my side, I chose the loaded baked potato salad and the chunks of potato were so huge, like 1/3 of an entire potato, it just made me feel like whomever chopped them was lazy and felt I could finish the job for him on my plate. Again, not appreciated, because most of the potato that I was eating after chopping it into an edible size was, by then, just a plan chunk of potato with none of the stuff on it that would make it part of a loaded baked potato salad. My husband ordered the combo Reuben and soup. He was more disappointed with his than I was with mine. There was three times as much bread on the already small half sandwich than meat and the soup was just okay. What was also annoying was that there was a previously unmentioned salad taking up most of the real estate on the plate, probably to make up for the fact that the portion of the actual food he ordered was quite small. The salad wasn't mentioned anywhere at all and he doesn't like or eat salad so this was a waste of food that was given to him that he was never given the opportunity to sub for anything else, even at an additional cost. He left still on the hungry side. I forgot to mention above that the waited actually brought the wrong food out, first, and still sat it down in front of me despite me telling him it wasn't mine. It wasn't expensive is the only redeeming quality I can think of other than the ambiance is nice inside. Overall, though, very disappointed and we much have just come at an off time since so many people seem to love this place per yelp. read more

The food and service are always fantastic, the ambiance is outstanding (with several settings to choose from-- casual pizza oven bistro, fine dining room or gorgeous patio!) Great wine menu, over-the-top beer tap selection and cocktails made to perfection! Great for catering events also. Excellent new restaurant in downtown Morganton. Great food and unique drinks. Oyster appetizer is killer. So is bourbon bacon brownie. I had a wonderful duck breast on my first visit and a friend had some of the best scollops I have ever tasted. I caught a glimpse of the coffee rubbed sirloin at a nearby table and can't wait to try it. The owners are delightful people who seem to really care about quality and service. This place tries so hard to be a fancy restaurant, with wait staff in all black and menu prices that have no dollar signs. With so much effort put into building this facade, you would think they would cook better food? We ordered the portobello burger... The patty came out overcooked and lifeless. The brioche bun was soggy from the oily beef soaking in. My friend ordered a chicken pasta fish, which was on par with frozen dinner pasta from the store. Maybe it's fancy for Morganton, but this restaurant does not present a "fine dining" experience. read more

Great Food!!!! Our son (yes we took 2 kids 13, and 8) said that the shrimp and scallops were in the top 5 meals he has ever eaten. I would have to agree as the trout was amazing as well. The patio seating was very inviting and pleasant. I know this said it wasn't kid friendly the waitress and hostess very friendly and we had a great time. We will be back when we visit again. Sandwiches are easily as good as those found in Asheville, Chicago, or San Francisco. The burger and sweet potato chips are terrific. The prices are very reasonable for this stylish place, and they have a nice patio as well. I would definitley go back again when I'm back in this area read more
