Wife and I ended up sitting at the bar for drinks appetizers and entrées. Great service and a large selection of beers to choose from. Dinner was fantastic; I had the ribeye and she had trout. For appetizers we had crabcakes with fried green tomatoes and some kind of Mexican pancake that was awesome. My biggest regret was that we did not get dessert. The atmosphere was just nice as we could see behind the bar and all of the restaurant supplies quite easily which took away from the ambience. Other than that I would go back anytime and suggest this restaurant to anyone. read more

This restaurant rivals any you'll find in the area... The entire Western NC area! Service was great and the food was amazing. The grilled wedge salad was creative and tasty. Very good food and service. Have been a few times. Only hiccup at all was both steaks not cooked to desired temps at last visit. Don't want to be too harsh about that, as, inexplicably, cooking steak to temp seems to befuddle chefs all over the place ( including at dedicated steak houses....go figure.). But I digress. To sum it up, we don't live in Morganton, but when traveling that direction, we now always make our plans allowing for a stop here, to eat. read more

We had a dinner date at Root & Vine tonight. Once again, I was blown away! I had an amazing meal starting with the Black Bull Martini (I highly recommend this creamy goodness). Then on to the Buttercrunch Lettuces salad. The goat cheese medallions and poached pear are a rockin' combination. Tonight, I ordered the Mahi Mahi special. One word: incredible. I am new to the Lake James area and this was my third time at Root & Vine in the past 9 months and it has only been FANTASTIC! Food has always been amazing (I've had salmon each time, but others I've been with have had other dishes and equally complimentary). Service is excellent. This past Friday we were seated in some outdoor seating out front and could have easily been forgotten. They have expanded their seating to accommodate more distancing, as the inside is tight. I will continue to frequent this high class eatery as often as I can! read more

Folks couldn't stop talking about this this place so when I was home for the weekend we ate here. It is really a neat place with different areas to sit at from the bar, table areas even outdoor seating. I had the shrimp tacos they where really good but they do have a strong kick in them so if you can't handle spicy food that well go for the cheer wine burger it's really freaking amazing. Great choice for upscale bistro style food in Morganton. Fried oysters on pimento cheese grits with bacon and a barbecue vinaigrette had me at "pimento cheese grits". Honestly, they could have stopped at bacon and I would have been happy. Entree was beef tenderloin wood fired to order just right (medium rare) but overshadowed just slightly by the gratin potatoes - wood fired with a perfectly crispy almost caramelized crust. Tiramisufor dessert done right in sheet pan form. Great service, too. Highly recommended. read more

My wife and I arrived Thursday at 5:20pm for a special occasion. We drove 40 minutes, excited to try this restaurant because of the special dishes on the menu. The restaurant was less than 25% full. The hostess seated us promptly. Loved the old downtown buildings it was located in. We waited for our server to arrive at our table to bring us some water and take our drink order, but no one showed up. As more people arrived after us they were seated and the wait staff went to their table. The table next to us and behind us were also served. We kept looking at the wait staff and no one would come to our table. Most of the other tables had 4 - 10 people. Was not sure if there were other couples dining. There were plenty of wait staff, for the size of the room. We got up and left after 30 minutes of waiting. Real bizarre experience. The bartender asked us what was wrong as we were leaving. read more

I had lunch with two of my besties yesterday and as usual, the meals were tasty. I am following a Mediterranean meal plan and was delighted to see they offered Israeli Couscous Salad. It was delicious, but I could have used a spoon to scoop up all the little pearls! Our waiter was attentive, not pushy and didn't try to rush us out when we wanted to stay awhile and chat. A Precious Gem of a find in downtown Morganton! One of the best Maryland Style Crabcakes ever & the Fried Green Tomato & Sauce so GOOD! It is a Rarity my husband says "that's one of best freshest Pizza 'a I have ever had" Collards had a sweet heat & the Shrimp & Grits were outstanding as was the service. The food was absolutely amazing here. I would recommend making reservations so you can be seated on the side with a little more ambience. The food was absolutely fantastic, my husband says delicious! The place is a bit loud, and does not help when a child is screaming at the top of his lungs. Whitley was such a nice waitstaff person. I have eaten here 4 or 5 times now and i have had menu items as well as pizzas from their wood-fired oven. I have yet to be disappointed. Last night I had the Scottish Salmon. It was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. My wife was also extremely pleased with the beef tenderloin. We shared a Bacon Brownie for dessert.. great choice! The service is excellent and the food is perfect. Don't miss this if you are in Morganton. read more

Really great spot. Healthy options, wood fired pizza, fresh ingredients. My wife got the burger and fries and the fresh cut fries were a highlight. My soup and salad combo came with a fresh side salad and parsnip ginger purée soup which was delicious. We also ordered a wood fired pizza that hit the spot for our 9 year old. read more

We were traveling through Morganton and I googled to find an outside seating area. We were traveling with our pup and wanted something besides fast food. I can say we were delighted with the excellent menu. The BBQ was superb. The collard greens were the most tasty and the macaroni cheese was gourmet. The service was excellent. I went here for dinner and we had 3 in our group. The place is in the downtown area and has multiple areas for seating. We went for the pizza. The staff was great and we sat in the large dining area to the right. There was a big group already seated so it did get a little loud. Our server was very helpful and actually recommended a muscle started that was excellent. It had a nice broth with a little spice that was excellent. We got pizza for the Marla and all were very good. Great craft beer selection as well! Hope to get back soon! read more

I had been told to be sure to try Root and Vine by many friends. So it was my Birthday and met friends there. Fantastic service, friendly and engaging but not hovering. Drinks fresh and creative. The oysters and grits we ended up ordering another order because we were fighting over the last of the serving. Coffee rubbed steak with Blue cheese mashed potatoes were to die for. Someone tried the Maui Maui which was excellent. Then a chocolate dessert ended this excellent meal. I was still thinking about the great meal and time I had several days later. Morganton does not have another dining experience like this so we must not let this place go. GET OUT THERE AND TRY ROOT and VINE! read more

I live out of town and come to Morganton every few months to visit family. This place is great for Morganton! The service was great and so was the food. I ordered the shrimp, scallops and mussels and it was very good. My husband is very picky about food and he had the steak with chimichurri and really loved it. I have been to some great restaurants, this definitely isn't what I would call a great restaurant, but is is great for Morganton. If you are here and want good food I recommend it. It is a bit pricey but I certainly didn't mind the price, it was worth it. read more

My salmon BLT was way too bland--barely any flavor--though the sweet potato chips (homemade) were great. My wife's fish tacos were a big disappointment. I was hopeful and excited when I walked into this restaurant for dinner on the way to Asheville. My first impression occurred at the bar, where we were greeted by a friendly and helpful young lady. My husband ordered beer, and I had a glass of Chardonnay. We were charmed by the glasses; mine featured a solitary star and his showcased pink elephants! In fact, I asked if I could purchase the pink elephant glass but was told that they are not for sale because the glasses were no longer manufactured. We were seated outside in their beautiful courtyard. The background music was a bit popish and cheesy, but the setting made up for it. Now, I am aware that as a vegetarian, I take a big risk when I dine in Morganton. I noted that the menu was heavily meat focused; however, there was an entree which could be prepared with either tofu or seafood. It featured pineapple as one of the ingredients. I am not a fan of fruit in savory dishes, so I passed. Instead, there was a chicken dish that featured asparagus and Brie risotto with a tomato relish. So, I ordered it, saying, "I want the risotto with no chicken." Our waiter tensed up, looking amazed, but wrote it down. My husband ordered the catfish meal. The waiter asked my husband if he minded that it was served with its head intact. My husband approved. Then, the waiter asked me the same question. I thought since he figured that I was a vegetarian, that I may be offended. I joked with him about putting sunglasses on it and all was well.... So, I thought! My husband's dish was loaded with catfish, collards and potatoes, looking like a feast for a king. And my dish? It fit into a vessel the size of a handleless tea cup. No Brie, asparagus or tomato relish. Obviously, when I omitted chicken, the waiter somehow thought that I just wanted the risotto, plain, with no frills. He took it back, and, the dish that returned was equally disappointing. It was the same risotto, dumped in a bigger dish, with one half melted chunk of Brie and the tomato relish. And the asparagus? Green beans, which I absolutely despise, turned up instead. I mean, if someone ordered duck and chicken came out instead, wouldn't that be awful? Same principle. Oh, Morganton, I so want to like you, but I have had two bad restaurant experiences in your pretty little town. read more

Great dining in downtown Morganton! Lots of fresh items and unique choices. This is a good place if you're adventurous, as the menu is not extensive and I suspect it changes regularly. I had a steak that was perfectly cooked. The featured dessert was a gem: bacon bourbon brownie! My only constructive feedback is that the pacing of the courses was a bit slow. I still wasn't able to finish my generous portion of steak however! read more

A mortal restaurant sin was committed during our visit. It's too bad because the servers were nice and 3 out of the 4 dishes we ordered were excellent. The issue was with the raw filet/beef tenderloin we received, and the restaurant failed to rectify the situation appropriately. It was not rare -- completely raw throughout. Even at this point we were willing to forgive and move on, since we are happy with the mussels, falafel, trout, and our drinks. However, the kitchen used the same piece of beef to get the cook right in the middle... So the filet returned with the inside cooked as ordered, and the outside completely charred and burnt. Even still, we were willing to forgive, despite the awful steak. But once the check arrived, and waitress said they discounted the steak at 25%, we were very, very disappointed. $22.50 for a bad steak is not ok under any circumstances. It's a real shame this happened. I hope others aren't so unlucky where the kitchen destroys a great piece of meat AND they make you pay for it. read more

I've visited this restaurant this off of a recommendation from a fellow vegan/vegetarian. Unfortunately I went at dinner and their menu was very limited and they weren't willing to do anything off their lunch menu. Sadly I just got one of their small oven pizzas and it wasn't that great. I guess I had really high expectations especially with the reviews confirming how great they were. But my personal experience on this visit was it was OK but just OK. Staff was not overly friendly but fairly friendly. I'd like to go back and try their lunch but unfortunately I doubt that I will. read more

Excellent dinner stop in Morganton, NC. Appetizers were heartily enjoyed with our cold beer (oysters and grilled romaine salad). The curry seafood trio was a savory treat. The food here is phenomenal. I got the most perfectly cooked beef tenderloin and the grilled romaine salad is surprisingly tasty. Rolls are free if you ask for them and you can tell they're freshly baked. My only complaints would be that the seating feels crowded and the service was meh. I heard they were expanding which will be good. Definitely good for a fancy lunch or dinner, especially in a small town. read more
