Recently had dinner at ROOH. I really enjoyed the ambiance (laid back sophistication). It's nice when you can actually hear everyone at the table talk. For small plates we ordered the Chili cheese kulcha (which had a nice kick), the pork belly and the lamb keema (which was the standout). For large plates we had the butter chicken and the sea bass. For me, the sea bass was a miss. I didn't enjoy the flavor but I know it's a popular item. I had the Road to Kerala cocktail which was DELICIOUS!! Our server was friendly, but I felt like she could have spent a little more time walking us through the menu. Overall a nice night out, but I think it's a little pricey for what you get. I wouldn't say this is the best Indian food I've ever had, but there were definitely some high points to our dinner. My sister made this reservation about a month in advance as a celebratory birthday dinner for me. ROOH is located on Restaurant Row on Randolph where other big names like Alinea, Blackbird and Elske reside. We were pretty bummed because we came for the tasting menu but learned they no longer offer that. But that's OK - we knew we'd probably order quite a few things to try from the menu to have our own tasting ;) The ambiance inside is trendy with LoFi music, jewel-toned booths, cozy lighting and Indian pop art murals on the wall. We were seated upstairs but kind of by one of the server water/refill stations so it was a busy little corridor. Menu is via QR Code and so we ordered some drinks to start. I ordered a Hyderabad Tonic which was a turmeric-infused gin & tonic. It was only OK. Not very strong in flavor and I couldn't really tell there was anything unique about it or taste the turmeric or other flavors in it. For food we ordered pretty much everything they offered that was vegetarian. Small Plates: - Chili Cheese kulcha -- this was delicious, spicy and the chutneys (which you add on the side for extra (kinda meh about that) - Avocado and chickpea bhel - this stole the show for me that night. It was so fresh, had lovely textures and flavors - Sweet potato chaat - it definitely had a kick to it and the potatoes were cooked beatifully Large Plates: - Tandoori cauliflower - delicious and very delicious though a little too dressed in the buttery gravy - Paneer pasanda - really good but again a little sauce-heavy - Avocado & raita - I wouldn't recommend or order this again. Felt like this was trying too hard to be "innovative" and just fell flat. Wow! What an experience! They guys nail service, drinks and food. Beginning with check in, and waiting at the bar for my party, I felt cared for, yet not overwhelmed. The bartender mixed be a perfect off-the-specialty-menu cocktail (def try the gin pistachio offering!!). And our sever helped the 4 of us choose delicious options for pairing small and large plates. Every flavor and texture was delicious. I would def go with a group, (or go super hungry!) only so you can try so many of the dishes. I loved the sweet potato chaat and the pork belly was pretty delish as well. The butter chicken was tasty but I wish there was more spice to it. The only docking of points was there were only two pieces of garlic naan that came with that dish. I wish it came with a bit more. In addition, the table service was nice (our water was never empty) but our waitress herself didn't rly check on our table and only came to take our order. First off, ambiance of this place is so lovely - dark, rich and classy. I loved the artwork of this place - reminds me of the NYC sister location. Secondly, the menu had so many unique varieties, we were torn on what to get. We ended up ordering the chili cheese kulcha, raita, chaat, jackfruit cutlests and the paneer. The menu is pretty large with lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and the portion sizes range depending on if they're appetizers/sides or entrees. We casually walked without a reservation and were seated at the at bar due to the lack of any available tables. All tables being occupied on a weekday was a bit surprising to me. We started off with the Road to Kerala and Malabar old fashioned cocktails. The road to Kerala cocktail was soooooo good. A must try! We then ordered the Kerala chicken and the sweet potato chaat as our appetizers. Both were really delicious. We then finished off with the Bengali Lamb shank. The meat was very very tender and overall, really flavorful. One thing to call out is that the menu at the restaurant was way smaller than we see online. However, I was quickly proven wrong when I had such a wonderful experience here with my parents when we went out for my birthday dinner. Immediately when walking in, I was impressed by the pretty decor and inviting atmosphere. We were seated in a large booth by the stairs connecting the upstairs area to the downstairs area by the bar. My parents have pretty strict dietary restrictions, and our waiters were so flexible and thoughtful in making a Jain palak paneer version of their "paneer pasanda" (which we also ordered), specially for them (and palak is technically not featured on their menu! The chef just was generous and knew he could!) We also ordered a daal. It doesn't even matter talking about each dish individually because each one was so balanced, flavorful, and delicious. I especially thought their special spicy chutneys were really unique and SPICY - the mango tomatillo was my absolute favorite. I would highly recommend ordering some rice to go with the paneer dishes. At first, I thought the larger paneer chunks were more aesthetic than practical because I prefer when there are more smaller pieces included, but the gravy is so excellent you don't care. I found our service to be very attentive to our needs, and I got a free dessert for my birthday as well :) Oh my gosh, just thinking about ROOH makes my mouth water! We had the 8 course non-veg meal with cocktail pairings on Valentine's Day, and what an incredible meal we had! The food and drinks were absolutely delicious. Two minor pieces of feedback. First, it might be nice to have an expected duration of the pre fixe dinner. It was nice not to feel rushed, but we could've easily been there for 2.5 - 3 hours. I'm not sure if it was our pace, or the pace of the restaurant. Second, the lobster dish didn't work for us, it was a bit overcooked and tough, but the rest of the dish and flavors were very good. I booked a reservation for New Years Eve that was $65 per person for early dinning which was 5-8:30 then 8:30-midnight it was $85 per person with a Dj. The pre-set menu had various dishes that were amazing. My boyfriend has never been to Rooh so it was great for him to try many different items. The starters were the avocado green chick pea bhel, chili cheese kulcha, chicken skewers and potato tikki chaat. For the main course, we had the jackfruit cutlet in saag, butter chicken, paneer curry and it came with garlic naan, rice and dal makhani. For dessert, we had the chocolate rum ball with besan barfi crumble. EVERYTHING was delicious. I loved how attentive the staff was and the food was still amazing even with a pre-set menu for the night. I absolutely loved the avocado green chick pea bhel because of the twist the chef took on a traditional dish. The spice levels were amazing without being overpowering. We had an excellent birthday dinner at ROOH, a place we had wanted to visit for a while and, thankfully, finally did. Their progressive, fusion take on Indian classics is a true treat, excellently prepared and presented. The green pea kulcha and avocado and chickpea bhel were probably the most traditional things on the menu, and they were excellent, bursting with fresh flavors and a great balance of spice. The jackfruit cutlet and sweet potato chaat were similarly divine, the chaat in particular one of the most unique dishes I've had, an unbelievable array of textures and flavors, from a tender sweet potato and crunchy kale to a bright pop of chopped raspberry and a smooth, airy yogurt mousse. Extremely impressive. As two members of our party had a birthday, they brought out a complimentary mango sorbet, which was similarly exquisite. Even if it isn't your birthday, you deserve this perfect cap to the night. Why does ROOH not get the 5th star? I hate to say, but they were a little loose with the indoor mask restrictions. Some folks walked in, or down from the upstairs, with no masks and were not told to put any on. Amazing place!! I first came here in December 2019 and now the menu has completely changed (also a Michelin restaurant now!) The drinks & food are really good. I recommend the jackfruit cutlet, avocado bhel, garlic naan, the lamb dish and then cauliflower curry. We told them to make it mild which they did and because it was my mom's birthday, we also got a free mango sorbet with a candle on the side. It is at a great location surrounding a lot of West Loop restaurants and two floors. I definitely also recommend making a reservation in advance because they get booked up quickly. Our server Will was so nice, he was really patient and meticulous about double checking the food ingredients due to our food allergies. I expected more in terms of quality and taste though. The avocado behl is actually a great starter and quite a healthy option, if you want something tasty and not feel guilty eating :) This is probably my 3rd time; and I always wished they had more vegan options. I asked if they could make Dal vegan, and they said it's pre-made; this is so basic and could have easily made from scratch. One of the sauces they sent us was not vegan; if I was not picky and double checked, we would have eaten it. Couple of our items came so late, that we had to cancel. Our server was very kind to remove it off the Bill. Overall, average experience. Full marks for the service by Will, and being considerate. The daal was standard but the other two dishes are more unique about not something you can find at most Indian restaurants. The naan was fine. The ambiance of this place is very fancy and soothing. As an Indian, I will say the food is very good, though expect it to not be spicy. The paneer is so soft it genuinely feels homemade. I want to preface by saying that the paneer is actually a very good portion for 2 people. I thought the portions would be small from pictures, but it's actually the same portion you'd get at the average Indian restaurant. The paneer is actually 4 large pieces (not 2, they're just stacked) and it's a fairly large serving dish. The cauliflower was also amazing! Garlic naan was very soft and fluffy, and chili cheese kulcha was also delicious, though I didn't think that one was worth the price. They don't give rice or naan with the dishes (you have to order separate) which is unreasonable--I felt rice should at least have been included with the entrees, but regardless, food was good!
