Unfortunately the hairdresser my friend used was unavailable in the week that I wanted to get my hair done. I opted to use someone of equivalent level and thought that given the salons good reviews that would be just as good. At the salon I found the staff to be pleasant but uninterested in me. The hairdresser I used kept watching the door as if I was just a filler appointment in between their more important clients. I found the same with the reception staff who just left me standing there aimlessly for a while whilst they chatted. I wouldn't have minded the staff's dismissiveness so much if the cut had been good. However, once I got home I noticed that there were long pieces of hair that that the hairdresser has missed and I ended up having to cut these piece to length myself at home. I understand that it might be easy to miss small bits of hair but these were reasonable sizeable sections. Overall I was just disappointed. My friend had spoken about how much she liked the salon as they were very friendly and the cut/colours were always good. I had to sadly disagree. However, I do note that this could be a one time lapse in service and I am going back again tomorrow to the hairdresser actually recommended by my friend so if they are much better I will happily change my views and let you all know.

The salon itself is fairly basic as are the products they use but, for me, this place excels at customer service and price. I see Kirsty for my hair appointments, she is bright and bubbly but also feisty refusing to do anything to my hair that she doesn't think would suit me or do my hair any good. She told me she would rather turn someone away than do something that would ruin their hair and I love that about her. Conversation is genuine, there are no weird awkward silences or stereotypical 'are you going away this year' type banter and she always remembers things you have said from the last visit. It is like going to see an old friend. I visited last Friday afternoon to have my ombre colour refreshed and the old greys covered. She also dried my hair with a blow wave taking the time to make sure it looked perfect before I left. The price of this was £40 and, considering the exceptional service, I feel this is a bargain. I won't be paying to go anywhere else!

The staff were lovely too, very knowledgeable and their was a cool and fun atmosphere in there. Not like those stuffy 'professional' hairdressers. They do in fact specialise in Afro-Caribbean hair (of which I am not the owner, although you'd be forgiven into thinking so when I've backcombed it into oblivion). They have a dedicated stylist for this kind of hair and whilst this is clearly a focus of sorts, they have a wide range of clientele so if you don't have Afro-Caribbean hair don't be put off. They are just as welcoming.

I booked myself an appointment for Saturday with very high expectations, and they were met gallantly. Mufti is cool, there's no denying it. It's in the Northern Quarter for starters, it's run by guys, the music is unbelievably mellow and lovely and it's simple, clean and relaxing. They had me at the film magazines by the sofa. You might not be able to pick a hairdo from them but you can read through which films should have been TV shows. Agreed, journalists! Empire Records should SO have been a series, as should Watchmen. Ahem, where was I. Hair, meet Karl, a genius, a lovely guy who washed my hair himself without getting some floor sweeper to do it and asked me questions about my hair routine throughout. I think he could tell from the clobber that I'm something of a vintage junkie, and my resulting style reflected that. A snip, a tweak, some conversations about Alex (he knew him very vaguely), advice on hair products and a confirmation that my hair is indeed thick (take THAT, Headmasters) and that short layers are fooling me into thinking my hair's manageable later, I looked in the mirror and was greeted with a silky head of waves worthy of a 40s movie star. The staff are all very young and cool but pretty friendly and you get offered a drink on arrival - I had a tea but the lovely girl who washed my hair said to shout if I wanted a glass of wine later too! The girl who cut my hair was great at offering advice at what would suit me best and the products to use but didn't give me the hard sell at the end which I hate. Will definitely return!

Immediately upon entry I was offered something to drink and we got right down to business. No waiting involved, which was a nice change from what I'm used to. The entire staff and owner were incredibly courteous and friendly, and as a Southerner(US), friendliness and courtesy are high on my list of valuable qualities to have. The stylist gave me exactly what I wanted done to my hair and then some! It was beautifully styled and at the end I was given some sample product to try. Come on, who doesn't like a good free sample? He clearly said on the phone wash, cut and restyle, I was sat next to him. We arrive at 2.25 and are told to take a seat. A lady is still having her haircut and is finished around 2.45. The owner, I belive her name is Nicola didn't speak to us once. After the lady had left she then proceeded to show who I imagine was the apprentice how to sort out a tray of items ready for another client. At 2.50 a lady walks in, a client Nicola obviously knows and she greets her and is chatting away, she then asks the apprentice to move my daughter so this woman can sit down! Still doesn't ask my daughter her name or speak to her directly. She then puts the Cape on her and I'm wondering why she isn't taking her to the sink to get her hair washed... She asks what she's having done and I show her the photo. The conversation went as follows: Her (looking at the photo) That's a full restyle Me: Yes that's what I booked in. Her: A man rang and booked and didn't say it was a restyle. Me: That was my husband I was sat next to him and he said wash, cut and finish. Her : This is shaved at the bottom? Me:... Yes? She then turns to my daughter and in the most patronising voice asks do you want it shaved at the back? My daughter replies yes (for the record my daughter has wanted a pixie cut since she was about 8. She is 10 now and I decided to get it done at the beginning of the summer holidays so it was a bit longer for school come September.) Nicola than asks my daughter again : Are you SURE you want it shaved? She then turns to me and says in a SUPER rude and patronising voice 'this is a lot of styling, she won't be able to do it herself, will you be able to do this for her everyday?' I told her I would and that I was quite capable of choosing which haircut is suitable for my daughter and that it was HER who chose the style. Nicola then proceeds in telling me at 2.55pm that the lady say next to me is booked in at 3PM. And that she doesn't think we will be able to do this. No apology. No offer to rearrange. She also admitted that it was booked in wrongly as she expected a dry cut that takes 15 mins. She basically told me she wouldn't be cutting my daughter's hair because had gotten off on the wrong foot No, she didn't cut my daughter's hair because she overbooked, prioritised the client she had booked in at 3pm because she knew her and because she spoke to me and my daughter like we were stupid and incapable of styling a simple pixie cut. I spent money on a taxi to get there, revived no apologies for the inconvenience and received completely awful service and manners from the second we walked in. I cannot recommend this place at all and actively suggest you avoid it as they obviously don't listen on the phone when making appointments, they have a poor appointment system, they over book, they are not friendly at all, no offer or a drink or magazine etc... They totally ignore you, don't ask your name and to stop it off she talked to me like something on her shoe when she realised we wanted a restyle (I imagine she was trying to put us off she she could just do a dry trim and get her next client in). My daughter has been looking forward to this all week as an end of school treat and she ended up crying her eyes out, she's a sensitive girl and the way Nicola spoke to her was horrible. The room was comfortable and private. Even in the dead of winter is was nice and toasty up there.. warm enuf to keep me warm while nude. The esthetician asked if I ever had a braz before (I had) and what areas I wanted done. For the sake of this review, I'll not get into details, but I told/showed her exactly where I wanted the hair removed and she affirmed that she knew what I required. She started out well, doing exactly what I told her but somewhere in the middle of the job she decided that I need more removed. She glopped a huge bit of wax, and in the end she removed about an inch past where we agreed I would not be done. When the waxing was finished she left me to my own devices to remove the left over wax bits that were left on my body... this was something I've never had to do for any other waxing I've had. Overall the facilities were great but the waxing was poor. Maybe she just wasn't used to a male client. Maybe she was having an off day, I don't know, but I'll not go back for another.
