I'm definitely not one of them studes that blows their student loan on a smart new haircut. In fact, I get my hair cut probably about once every nine months. But it was absolutely knackered at the ends and after some online recommendations, I decided to give the Toni & Guy Academy in Manchester a whizz.
The T & G Academy is a training ground for their wannabe stylists. I figured they must be pretty good to get into Toni & Guy in the first place, plus I was assured by the fact that a supervisor checks all stages of the cut. It was £12 for a cut (and just £25 for a colour). Bargainous. You're scheduled two and a half hours, but mine ended up taking about two hours.
You pay before you go in, which I thought was a bit weird at first - can't imagine they'd had many people doing a mad dog, but I suppose they may get some unhappy models arguing with the results. When I was sat down, however, I felt a sense of relief having paid as, being a skint stude, I always worry about things getting added to the bill and me paying later and them saying "that'll be £89 please." I always think that if I ever go to subway, cos I never go so I always forget the etiquette and procedure. So when the person is going "do you want cheese? Do you want it toasted? Do you want salad?" sometimes I say no cos I worry they'll be a quid each or summat. Know what I mean?
We've all heard the horror stories of the girl with waist length hair who went in a training salon for a trim and came out with pixie cut, but most people I spoke to seemed positive about their experiences there. So I turned up to the building on Queen's Street and, the only negative in the experience, found the receptionist hideously rude and off.
I was soon shown down to the main salon with about 15 other girls (and boy) and we sat in front of the mirrors. A girl came round, asked what we wanted and wrote some jargon on the mirror in rub-off marker. Very trendy. I was well surprised at the un-bossyness of the staff. I thought they'd be instructing us what would look better, but they were totally approachable and agreeable.
The lady who did my hair actually owned her own salon in Birmingham - she'd come for a week's extra training at T & G to get new inspirations for her salon. I reckon my cut would have probably have cost about £40 at least if I'd have booked in with her at her salon, but instead it was a quarter of the price. The bloke in charge came over regularly to check my hair. He was very nice and had just got back from styling super models at London fashion week.
They're very scientific and precise at what they do, which impressed me. It shows why they can charge so much in the normal salons cos they really know their stuff. My stylist was telling me how they've really taken her back to basics on her training course. Even though she'd been a hairdresser for twenty years and they'd manage to teach her several new ways and techniques for cuts she'd been doing all that time.
I was well pleased with the finish and all my friends were impressed. They even thought I'd had a colour cos it looked so bright and shiny. I always find split ends after I come back from the hairdressers, but I can't see any now. I urge you all to book in if you wanna save on your next haircut. You'll never go anywhere else! read more
