Whenever I mention the Brazilian Waxing Co to my female friends, the reaction is always the same;…read morethey go white, cross their legs and say 'oooph!' It's pretty much a universal reaction amongst the girls, whilst men either stare blankly as if to say 'eh?' or nudge each other and go 'fnurr fnurr! Eh! Eh! Hehehehe!' like excited monkeys. And nine times out of ten, I'm not even talking about this place because of its waxing of down-there hair. You see, despite its fear-inducing name, Brazilian Waxing Co does more than just your ladygarden. I've been coming here since it opened a couple of years ago, for various treatments but one in particular. Eyebrow threading. If you haven't heard of it, or you're not sure what it is, you only need to know three things: one, it's quicker than plucking, and more precise than waxing; two, it lasts longer; and three, it really, really bloody hurts! But it is so worth it; when I'm done with my threading, I look in the mirror and the pain instantly fades; all I can think of is how great my eyebrows look. As any girl will tell you, a good eyebrow lifts the face. The threading treatments I have had here have always been top-notch, excellent value at £7 and I would recommend it as the best place for threading in Manchester. The only place that tops it is a salon I visit when I'm in London. So, if you need your eyebrows done, you know where to go, but what of the rest of their treatments? Well, I'm not gonna go into too much detail for the faint hearted amongst you, but the bikini waxing service is efficient and they try and make you as comfortable as possible. There's no need to be embarrassed, these girls have seen thousands of downstairses, and they'll see thousands more. What makes me slightly uncomfortable is the design of the shop and treatment rooms, which are basically enclosed booths. The walls don't reach all the way to the ceiling, and sound carries pretty well, so it's hard to relax completely. The basic bikini wax is £10, Brazilian £20, and they'll take it all off for £25 (in for a penny, in for a pound, as my wise old nan might say). In terms of what else they wax; pretty much whatever you want. Arms, legs, tummies, chins. And yes, boys, they do offer the back, sack and crack, at an eye-watering (you're not wrong there...) £50. They also do lash and brow tinting for both genders (in case your manscara isn't quite cutting it...) So if you've got unwanted hair, anywhere, get down to Brazilian Waxing Co.

Friendly team and excellent service. Harriet is fast and my gel nails always look fab and last longer than any others I've had in the past. You also get offered a complimentary glass of bubbles which goes down a tear while getting your nails pampered. Gel nails cost £22 with removal of previous set included. I recently had my gels off which is £5 or free with any service, so I opted for a file and polish which cost £8 and lasted literally 10 days before it started to chip. Amazing! You can book online and I would highly recommend Harriet's service for nails. I can't comment on other beauticians as haven't experienced their services.

Conversation with Harriet is never stilted but not too much; she's normal and friendly and down to earth. She doesn't judge me for my low pain threshold and gets the job done quickly and as pain free as possible. It's excellent value for money and a lovely salon too. A very personal service, and you even get a discount in the week running up to and just after your birthday! Couldn't recommend them more!

Also being crammed into economy class with little room to stretch my legs and back doesn't help finding the energy to get back to work or relax. But after coming back from Vegas, my last 10 hour flight, I was determined to get back into balance a bit quicker with a little help from Bali Spa. Conveniently situated in the heart of the city centre, it was only a short walk in my delirious jetlag state through the streets of China Town to find this gem of a SPA. Leaving Manchester behind once you walk up the first floor, you truly feel like you are back on holiday! Yay prolonging the relaxation and easing the jet lag. The luxurious interior of Bali spreads over three floor and is about the most beautiful seeting I have seen in any location in Manchester so far. Its surprisingly quiet and airy, given the busy location. You are instantly welcomed by the friendly staff and find yourself lounging on the comfy sofa, sipping a glass of Aloe Juice or tea. After your treatment you are also welcome to stay and are not ushered out for the next appointment waiting. Their treatments range from various types of massages, manicures and pedicures to facial treatments using PAYOT products. I was booked in for a full Indian head and neck massage, of 60 minutes and welcomed by Anna, who explained the whole procedure in detail. She also made sure I was not allergic to any of the ingredients used on my skin. I can be quite sensitive to anything scented so I decided to stay away from lavender or tea tree old. She was also very gentle and professional in her approach, all her movements were executed as a choreography, knowing exactly where to apply pressure. To be honest I am fairly hesitant to trust someone to give me a massage as I know how much damage can be done with the wrong technique, but felt in absolutely safe hands here.

The signs were all there to walk away, I chose to ignore them. There were multiple times in the appointment I should have left. I regretfully stayed and am now facing the consequences the next day and weeks to come. I had a recommendation from a friend to see Yulia at Dalton Street Salon. I book the appointment for 4pm, Saturday March 9th (remember the time this is very important). I receive a phone call that Yulia is no longer there. Alright, I should have canceled then. I decided to keep my appointment figuring it wouldn't be that bad and I shouldn't worry. Boy was I wrong. I arrived for 4pm. The nail girl was a few minutes late, no big deal, we all have our days. I show her my nails and explained that I was unhappy with my previous salon due to the nails being uneven and breaking constantly. I've been getting my nails done for about 2 years now, I think I would know how I like them done. She then began to explain to me they are suppose to be all different shapes and styles due to the size of my fingers. OK- that's when I should have walked away again and didn't. I have never had a nail tech tell me all of my nails are okay being different shapes, but to each their own. I tell her I want a new set so she begins to file away the previous nail polish as quickly as she can. She keeps hitting the skin of my fingers, doesn't apologize, and continues. It seemed as if she was irritated I didn't want her to work over SOMEONE ELSES work?? She then begins soaking my hands in acetone. She walks away from the table and I notice she has her jacket on. SHE LEAVES THE SALON. Third opportunity I should have left and didn't - a big mistake on my part. So here I am 30+ minutes later soaking my hands in acetone - OUCH- and she comes back to begin my set. As soon and she pulled out the box of glue on tips I knew I was in trouble. Not only did I pay a SCULPTED NAIL price, I got terrible GLUE ON tips. I haven't had glue on tips in YEARS. This is where I seriously wish I would have left. Here she goes, gluing on plastic nails. I'll take responsibility for the next part as I should have spoken up about how unhappy I was but we are already over an hour at this point so I just wanted to get the nails over with. After gluing on the terrible tips she then says she will need to charge me extra for the length. Alright, my nails are usually super long so it's understandable. What's not understandable is why I was still charged that price when it's not what I received. She cut me multiple times during the appointment while at one point I had to stop her and put pressure on the major cut she opened up AGAIN. I will never understand why you need to rush to the point of hurting a client! This is where the worst of it happened. We go to the till, it is 6:45PM at this point. Almost THREE HOURS, are you kidding me? She then tells me my total is £53. FIFTY THREE POUNDS. Not only was I charged for SCULPTED nails, I was also charged a length fee. These are the shortest nails I have ever had and your length fee is bullshit. I will 100% not be returning as £53 is quite honestly a rip off and a joke. My hands are so sore the next day and I cannot wait to take these nails off. Just another lesson to not ever come here for nails again. 53 POUNDS people, 53 POUNDS.
