In first year I had a horrendous incident where I went for a haircut to remedy a terrible haircut…read moreI'd had the previous day and I ended up looking like Princess Diana, declared myself a hermit and didn't see another human soul for four weeks unless I was wearing a hat. It was a bad time. Bemoaning my experiences to Stylish Friend, I was admonished for going to not one, but two hairdressers in a new city without asking friends for recommendations or checking any websites (though to be fair, even if I had checked the website for the second hairdressers, I doubt it would have said 'be careful or you will end up looking like Princess Diana', but never mind). Anyway, Stylish Friend recommended Razors Edge on Oxford Road, which turned out to be not only my saviour, but 5 years on I'm still going there.
All in all, the haircuts I've had at Razors Edge have been excellent. They clearly employ skilled hairdressers and the general standard is great. I've had different variations on the same haircut since I was about 11, except for the aberration in first year that saw me end up with the Lady Di bouff, and some hairdressers have gotten it very wrong. At Razors Edge, however, I am always happy with the results. Tip, for those girls who find that hairdressers always get your fringe wrong, I find that saying "the fringe is really important" at the beginning of the haircut really helps. I've said it every time someone new has cut my hair at Razors Edge (which happens often, as I always go for stylist, rather than senior stylist, and good hairdressers seem to get promoted quite quickly here) and I've never come away with a bad fringe. Right now my favourite (and my Stylish Friend's) is Charlotte. She can be hard to get an appointment with, so get on the phone well in advance!
On my last visit to Razors Edge I was a bit disappointed, though. I fancied a change so asked for a few bright blonde chunks to be put in, to complement my new 'do. After about 2 hours of sitting around with foil on my head, reading the same Glamour over and over again, my hair was dried and styled, and I discovered that instead of edgy chunks of platinum, I had instead been given a few tasteful swipes of caramel. Not blonde enough, or chunky enough, for the £69 I ended up paying, too embarrassed and British to say "this isn't what I ordered". When I mentioned this to Another Stylish Friend, I was informed that although she trusts the Razors Edge crew with her cut, she always goes elsewhere to get a colour. Given my experience, I'd recommend you do the same.
They have recently started offering eyebrow threading, which is basically my favourite beauty treatment. Sure, it stings like a beast, but you end up with eyebrows Vivienne Leigh would be proud of.
The best thing about Razors Edge is the student discount. 25% off, Monday to Saturday. For the best deal, go for stylist, not senior stylist. With the student discount, you end up paying £26, rather than £35, for a cut and blow dry, leaving you with some pennies to go and spend in Odder up the road, to show off your brand new 'do!
