It has been years since I last visited this place and largely for the same reasons as I explain here. Wanted Italian and Macaroni Grill's parking lot was nearly empty on a Saturday (understand why), so I figured I could get in and out quickly. Service was good as was the ambiance, but the food and prices left much to be desired. I first asked for an appetizer. They were out. I then had the Trio Sampler for $26--no sides other than the bread. The chicken parm was paper-thin, half a palm size, tough, and not even served over spaghetti. The fettuccini alfredo would also fit in the palm of the hand, and the lasagna was bland--no flavor. $26!!!!!! plus tax and drink! Based on the comments I read here, it is obvious that the RGV folks have never experienced authentic Italian or they simply have low expectations for food quality and prices. As for me, never again. I make much better at home for fractions of the cost. read more

Great restaurant! As before, I came with a group of friends (11 total). It did not take long to be seated. The server welcomed us, brought drinks, bread and dipping sauce, and took our orders... He was well organized and personable. The orders were filled accurately and as expected or better. The food was delicious. I loved the grilled salmon! It had a great flavor, texture and was cooked to perfection. Last time I was here, the fresh brewed iced tea only was available with special flavors added like raspberry or mango. (I'm not sure why that was). This time they had all the flavors as before, but also the simple fresh brewed black iced tea (aaahhh). I enjoyed the atmosphere. I appreciate that I could enjoy the conversation without having to shout or strain to hear because of overly loud music. Maybe it's a sign of getting older... I love music, but I go out with friends to a restaurant to enjoy conversation. When I arrived I went to the restroom to wash my hands... the sink and floor was a mess. Water, used paper towels everywhere... I figured I happened to arrive at an awkward time, at the end of the lunch rush, and they just hadn't had the chance to service it yet. Arrived at 5:01 pm. First in the door for the dinner crowd. This chain has been a favorite since I was young. I was sad to see the reviews were not stellar. I was alone tonight and I indicated the same to the hostess. She ushered me to the first booth. Dean Martin crooning overhead. Im a sucker for Dino. So far so good. Waiter was prompt in taking my drink order. I looked at the menu even though I always order the Penne Rustica. It is much harder to order my dish now that the calorie count is listed too. Damn you Michelle Obama. With the water, the waiter brings a saucer full of that golden liquid temptress "Olive Oil" and a loaf of bread. Oh boy! Shamed by the Former First Lady, a lighter fair I opt, the Chicken Marsala. About 400 calories less and the same flavor points. The waiter brings my dish, Spaghetti and breaded chicken breasts with mushrooms in a Marsala wine sauce. It looks great. He asks if I needed anything else. I hadn't tasted anything yet but I declined. After a couple bites, yes, salt please. The pasta was tasty just needed a little salt. The chicken breasts were average. The Rustica still holds the top spot but I don't have to run that extra mile tomorrow. Solid 3.5 stars but no halfsies in Yelp so 4 for nostalgia. Not bad but I want to find great. He did not charge us for her plate, since she got get plate fifteen minutes later than us. Then he forgot my drink for ten minutes. We decided to do the "Create your own pasta". Our server was fantastic! We got the complimentary bread with olive oil, and the manhattan clam chowder as an appetizer. I thought everything tasted really good except the ricotta meatballs in my pasta. I ate everything and just put the meatballs aside, thinking nothing of it, but my server came and asked if everything was okay. I explained to him that I thought the meatballs were terrible, but everything else was great. When the check arrived, it was delivered by a manager, named Daniel. He said, "Sir, I heard you didn't like our meatballs, so I apologize and will take it off your check". Totally didn't expect that because maybe my expectations are so low in the Valley. We thoroughly enjoyed our after church meal here. The warm-out-of-the-oven ciabatta loaf was WONDERFUL!!! Served with fresh cracked pepper and decent EVOO for dipping. The calamari was good and had two tasty condiments served alongside. I also ordered a bowl of Tomato Basil soup that was really good. The wife had their rendition of a Caprese Salad. She only wished it had more fresh basil. For a main course I had the Mama's Trio - Chicken Parmesan, Fettuccine Alfredo and Lasagna. I don't get to Mac Grill often. Probably run across it most often at O'Hare airport in Chicago. There are plenty of restaurants in this shopping center but thought this sounded good as was easy to get to. I walk in, party of one. Will I be barred? Waiting, waiting... Will I be barred? Score! Would I like to sit at the bar? No. The restaurant is practically empty. Let me sit among other diners. I'm quiet and don't make a mess... So the waiter/host walks me a table by the prep table -- close to kitchen when the pepper, crayons and water pitchers, etc are kept. Fine. Beats being in a back corner or by the bathroom. And I can help myself to the pepper. I'm still standing while putting my sunglasses in my purse when he asks if I already know what I want to drink. Dude, relax. I didn't say I was in a hurry. I go with tea. Seems like there's a better likelihood of making a liquor sale if you let me look at the menu first. I know I've been swayed before by a drink that sounds better than tea. He brings my tea. At O'Hare, I usually get the lasagna but used to order penne rustica when off airport. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo w chicken. Drat! Should have stuck with my routine and ordered the rustica. The fettuccine was truly ordinary. I know, I know...$17 for pasta and preformed chicken strips that would have cost me 20% of that if I made it at home. But I'm not home. My waiter checked on me a couple times. This location and all macaroni grill locations has lost my business forever due to this location not accepting this coupon. This coupon is the only reason why I even entertained eating at macaroni Grill. We will not return to this or any other location, The manager did come tell is the coupon would not be accepted. The manager did not come explain to is why this location does not accept the coupon nor did the manager even offer to give is one of our deserts for free etc. It is poor customer service. Coworkers and I went in, the hosts were very friendly and greeted us. Once we sat down, the server brought us our food and never came back. No one bother to refill our drinks, we had to constantly get up to ask the host for stuff. When we received our meal our chicken was cold, as to the pasta was okay, not that bad.... Ask about the "Wine Serving Honor System"!!! The Macaroni Grill! It's a different kind of franchise Italian Restaurant. Has good food, excellent lunch specials, and awesome wine prices! I've visited this place for the first time in Austin and the service was impeccable! Food was spot on! Monday thru Thursday has half priced wine bottle specials. BUT... the Mcallen location has allot opportunity for improvement. First off, one of the main attractions, if you will, of Romano's Macaroni Grill is the Self Serving Honor System when you order a bottle of wine. It's exactly what it sounds like. You order a bottle of wine, they leave the wine at the table, you serve yourself your glasses and only pay for the glasses you tell them you served yourself. It's one of the first things they tell you about when you first pull into a Macaroni Grill, its one of their selling points.... well not at the Mcallen location. You have to pull some teeth to get that info out of them it seems. And when I did get the ball rolling the server in the bar area seemed annoyed. I'll have to knock it a star for that. Other than that, you ask for olive oil and they'll leave the pint of olive oil at the table for you to use on your Italian dishes as you please. Love Olive oil, even though the olive oil at this "Italian" restaurant isn't 100% olive oil (Someone get the rope!). Seriously though once you get the ball rolling with these guys its a good ol fun time. If you have the option, hit a Macaroni grill elsewhere to get the proper feel of what this restaurant has to offer. The restaurant is great, BUT the location in Mcallen has plenty of room for improvement from last time we where there. That's without mentioning the servers lack of customer care. read more

The shrimp was really hard to chew and had no flavor.. actually NOTHING had flavor. We had to add a lot of cheese, oil, salt, and pepper to our pasta.
