Extremely racist encounter today. I purchased two Mărțișor and the lady at the counter forgot to put them in my bag. When I returned, she swore up and down she bagged them. I told her they were not in there and that I already checked. She had the audacity to say, in front of customers, that she thinks I am lying. She proceeded to throw the cards on the counter. I informed her I don't appreciate her racism and that I will no longer be a patron. Why would I lie about some cheap greeting cards? Pathetic. As a Black Romanian, I am extremely disheartened to receive this treatment. read more

This place has really gone downhill since the ownership change. I used to come here for the Romanian deserts which were always fresh and delicious. Since the new owner took over the deserts are very substandard. Things taste like she makes one soupy vanilla sauce for everything... sorry but an eclair and a cremesh have to have real vanilla custardy goodness in them not some crap frosting. Also, presentation is severely lacking and sometimes I feel like very old deserts are lumped in with the new so they would sell. And by the way get rid of the horrible styrofoam containers! Terrible for the environment... The new owner is kind of rude. Barely greets you when you walk in and walks past you to go in the back and do whatever she does and doesn't come out for a while. I get that she's working alone mostly but communicate a little ok? Today I went in for some amandine which she didn't have and settled on some savarine but after waiting for a bit with no acknowledgement decided to leave and probably not come back. This store is never open when I come to shop! I don't understand how the owner can have this place closed during business hours!!! First, she opens late (10:00 am), then she puts a sign up that she'll be back at 1:30 when her store was not open! At least, close it for 2 weeks if you need a break! Second, some products are expired already and they are on the shelves with regular price! I am taking my business somewhere else!! The prices are very high and the new owner seems to be very strange. The produce doesn't not have the expiration date label on it. I checked the price online for the product I bought and it was $1.50 but she charged me $4.00. She addition charged me another $1.20 for apparently using my credit card she didn't charge me last time. Eventually she gave me $1.00 back but she got argumentative until she realized she was wrong. There is not much diversity of food here also. I recommend the other Romanian Food Store, I believe is called Emanuel!!! There they are friendlier and they have better prices and more diverse food. read more

Homemade delicatessen in Carmichael has a very nice employee base and friendly people about. The selection is very large. There are candies in so many varieties that are unique, as well as pastas. But the main attraction here is obviously the delicatessen. Taste of Homemade Delicatessen has, sausage, of many varieties. They also have bacon, and salami among other fine meats. Another bonus is that they have many dessert items that are specially made. Some of the items are more appealing to the eyes, for their novelty, than they are to the actual taste buds. I love this store! If you are not romanian you have to try " mici " ( skinless sausage) the cakes. I'm from San Rafael and I love to drive 2 hours anytime for some yummies! Everytime I'm going there they have this very warm bread to die for! I just have water on my mouth thinking of all the goodies ! Absolutely disgusting, I just spent over 125$ on salamis and some deserts and all is bad. The deserts are very very old they taste rotten. The salamis are rotten, old and sticky. When you actually open them from the plastic they stink very bad. Bought some pufulets all hard and stale. Should be ashamed for selling this kind of garbage. Everything had to be thrown out. This is a Eastern European grocery store and we shop here about 5-7 times a year. I should say their food is mostly Romanian but there is also Macedonian, Bulgarian, Polish and a few other East European foods. The owner is very welcoming and friendly. They have a variety of foods mostly meats, cheese, drinks and pastries are to die for. On my visit yesterday we bought bread, eclairs, mici (Romanian sausages made with beef and lamb meat), pickled roasted bell peppers & a few other items. Here's my honest opinion as always ;-) Service - 5 stars Quality of food 4-5 stars Price - 3 stars (great food but a little overpriced but some items are priced ok) For example the bread which is made daily it cost us $3 which is a good price. Romanian mici/sausages about 26-28 equal to about 4lbs cost about $25 price not bad. Roasted Bell Peppers from Macedonia about 80oz $7.99 great price ! Now the Romanian fresh made Turkish Delight at $10 for a pound was way overpriced (that should of been more like $5-6). But here's my overall review at 4 STARS! Came all the way from San Francisco to have some Romanian food and was more than pleased! The owner is super nice and the food is all handmade. The mici was fresh off the grill so each bite was so juicy and rich in flavor! I had to stop myself from eating too much because I knew we were going to have dessert afterwards. If I could have tried all of the desserts they had I would have. I tried the diplomat and it was amazing! My favorite had to be the savarina. It was sweet, but not too sweet. I have not been back to this store for over a year. They have a new management, and it looks very promising. The place had tidied up since the last time I was there. There are more Romanian products than they ever had since the ten years my family and I have been coming here. There are even more Romanian products than Jon's Supermarket and International Meat Market in southern California, which is pretty impressive. The bakery selections are still the same, so they kept the same baker I assume, which is a plus for me:) The lady at the register was extremely friendly and accommodating. She said that the store isn't perfect, but is trying in every way to make it better. For potential and previous customers, I would highly recommend at least try, or come back to this place and see for yourself. Not cheap. The food is good, but they are not cheap. The prices are not advertised, if you don't ask , you may be overcharged. I walked in on a whim looking for a sandwich, hoping I would need to resort to Subway next door. Alas they don't make sandwiches. They have two tables set for eating though so I asked the man at the counter what those were for and he replied that they make desserts. Prices have gone through the roof and quality down the drain. Used to be a great deli/market, but everything changed under the new ownership. The deli meat are stale, merchandise is expired ( and way too expensive) and the owners are so rude and unprofessional. The owner has a chip on his shoulder and acts like he's doing you a favor. Forget ordering over the phone, they never get it right! Not once. It seems that is chaos in there all the time. Very disappointed. read more
