This was the last stop on my whirlwind tour of most of the distilleries on Distillery Row (minus the 2 off to the west, and the 2 off to the south). Their normal price is $8 to taste 5 things (fully comped with the passport), so the passport is a particularly good deal here. However, it was another of the annoying ones where I really wanted to taste more than 5 things, as they had a decent selection that all looked interesting. I started off with two of their aquavits - the aged version of their traditional one, which I thought was good but not amazing, and a more uniquely Portland-y one, "ole bjorkevoll", which was absolutely the best aquavit I've had, just ridiculously smooth and ridiculously flavorful (really wish I could've tried the aged version of that second one, but they were temporarily out, unfortunately). I then tried two of their pepper vodkas - a habanero vodka that only had the slightest hint of pepper, more sweet than anything (I got hints of honey and vanilla), and a hotter one that did mostly taste like vodka and hot pepper, but wasn't overpoweringly hot. I thought both of these were, likewise, good but not amazing. Finally, I tried their coffee vodka, which was absolutely fantastic - really tasted properly like drinking 80-proof coffee. Gorgeously smooth, without the sweetness - just this and a cream liqueur with an ice cube, would make a simple but fantastic "cocktail". One of the best coffee spirits I've had, and I've had some pretty good ones. I also had to try one of the mini-cocktails here, because I couldn't possibly imagine aquavit and ginger beer being that great together, but they promised it was, and their aquavit was so good. Turns out yeah, it's pretty fantastic. The place was pretty small, so if you came at a busier time, it'd probably be unpleasantly cramped. It's a bit hidden, though, so I don't know how frequently it gets that busy - I was there on a Saturday late afternoon, and it was fairly quiet, kinda relaxing, really. Got to chat with the owner a bit, too, so that was neat. Note to self: if I'm ever back in Portland, this is one of the ones I have to come back to, so I can try the rest of the stuff I couldn't try this time. read more

Rolling River Spirits specializes in the Scandanavian spirit, Aquavit, and features 6 different types in their tasting room. They have a very efficient space where they do all production and bottling, but this leads to a very small tasting room. While the liquor was good, we didn't feel any excitement or passion from the bartender as she was pouring. As opposed to other tasting rooms we have visited where the bartenders describe the spirits, we felt that portion was missing from our visit to Rolling River. There were 2 other parties there while we were there so it's possible that it was difficult for 1 bartender to manage and engage 3 different tastings. Overall, good spirits and worth stopping in! It can be a little difficult to find, but look for the signs to follow the hallway to the tasting room. read more

We've never been to their location, but have enjoyed their spirits at their booth at ScanFair (Scandinavian Fair) in Portland each year. I am particularly fond of Aquavit and they have several different flavors to choose from. At ScanFair they offer an Aquavit flight with snacks pairing, which is delicious and a good way to try the different flavors of the spirit. The folks manning their booth at ScanFair each year have been quite nice and very helpful in answering any questions you may have. read more

This was the smallest physical space of the distilleries we visited. BUT you could customize a tasting menu so that was fun. I actually liked their holiday aquavit (with warm spices) and could see using it in holiday baking. Everything else was fine, but there were just too many people for the number of staff and the size of the room. Their groupon was certainly bringing folks in. We came here with our distillery passports and got 5 tastings. I was all about the spicy ones, because I love spicy anything! The 5 I tasted are below, as well as a description. I loved the top 4. I am not a Gin person, so I was hesitant but it was better than the Tanqueray, Bombay or Beefeater - which were the only 3 I have had before. HABANERO VODKA - Made with fresh orange habanero peppers TRINIDAD SCORPION VODKA - Made with fresh Trinidad Scorpion peppers BJØRKEVOLL'S HOLIDAY AQUAVIT - A Scandinavian classic made with caraway, cinnamon, cardamon and allspice. BROWN BEAR - This is a traditional flavored aquavit made with caraway, orange and lemon peel, hops and then aged in used rye whiskey barrels. GIN - This is infused with 12 botanicals, juniper, citrus and cardamom. The tasting room is at the back of a hallway of a warehouse-looking building. It was somewhat discreetly located but we were able to find it with the help of a group who was leaving. Large groups can get a little cramped, if another large group is already there, but we got there first so we lucked out and the other group hung back in the lounge area until we were finished. Most people doing tastings catch cabs, Ubers or Lyfts... but in the offchance you find yourself the DD, it's nice that this distillery has plenty of free street parking. read more

I was in the area for the Night Market and saw the free tasting and decided to stop and check it out. Rick and Tim were very friendly and knowledgeable. It was super cool to discover that Tim actually made a bunch of the stills. I appreciated hearing more about their history from Rick and Tim and how they ended up having a family distilling business. I was also excited to hear that they were distilling some whiskey which is always dear to my heart. I tried their rye whiskey barrel aged aquavit. It was delicious! Super tasty with great herbal flavor. I talked with Tim about how much I liked the fact that they made a very traditional, caraway-forward aquavit. I've never done a tasting on Distillery Row and look forward to coming back and definitely stopping by here in the future! read more

Not my favorite environment on distillery row. It's tight quarters if there are more than a few customers and service was just so-so.

Rick helped us and they have a lot of options for having a small tasting room. I bought 3 different bottles and I'm surprised why other distilleries have more reviews and sell crappy ass alcohol. This place is a must for you to get you feet wet on different spirits . read more

Delicious spirits with a great taste. I am not a huge fan of vodka but Rolling Rivers has definitely changed my mind. I found them through Groupon on a weekend trip to Portland and am SO glad I did. Staff is beyond kind & helpful and they make delicious mixed drinks using their vodka. My favorite was the Corpse Reviver. Has taste of orange and aquavite. Definitely a must! read more

This is my second time visiting this distillery in 3 months. The first time I came with my cousins and my brother in January, and the second time around I came with my boyfriend two weeks ago. I was browsing on Groupon to see if there were any good deals and discovered that Rolling Rivers had a deal for 2 tastings with two take home shots for $7! What an awesome treat to get free shot glasses. That was probably my favorite part about coming here especially because I collect shot glasses and I didn't have to buy one on this trip. The tasting room is nicely set up. You can see all the machines and if you're lucky you might even get to see how they make it. I really enjoyed the vodka and Aquavit. Very smooth and I didn't need a chaser with it. To be honest I never even heard of Aquavit before coming here but it was cool to learn about it. It was nice that the people helping me both times were the owners. The first time was the husband and the second time was his wife. Both were very helpful and explained each spirit and the history. I appreciated the fact that each bottle was created by someone in the family. I believe if I'm not mistaken, the wife created the coffee one and that one was my favorite out of all of it so better try it if you pass by. read more

Great staff who are very knowledgeable about their products- makes sense as I was able to talk with the distiller. I fell in love with their product with the great bear bottle almost a year ago. Out of all of the distilleries we went to, this was probably my least favorite one. Nothing terribly wrong with it though! I think the others were just that good it made this one seem less exciting to us. We were visiting with the passports so we had a ton to visit during the two days we were there. It's a little strange to walk into this one, we were a bit confused on the layout but we found our way just fine with the signs. The tasting guide was one of the owners, it is all family owned and they work there as the guides/distilling. It was a bit awkward talking to the tasting guide, she didn't say much and was very soft spoken so it was difficult to really get the fun-exciting vibe like the others. She didn't seem that interested in really giving a tasting, the other owner was there working but he seemed grumpy. My +1 enjoyed their spirits. We got to try the cider drink and she did make me a warm cider without any alcohol in it. They were both delicious, I think it was store bought cider, I can't recall. Overall, definitely a place to visit but I don't think this was one of our "must-visit" distilleries. read more

Here's another yum one to visit while using your Portland Distillery Passport. Rolling River Spirits is spirited with Gins, Vodkas, Aquavits and trolls. Having Scandinavian connections this family owned business welcomes trolls and humans for a visit. Joan took my friend and I through a introduction of aquavits, most all that I liked except the rose. Since my palette is not super refined and honestly I might just enjoy drinking I wasn't the best conversationally to explain in great depths and description what I sampled and why. That said I walked away treating my friend and her fam to one of the yum ones we sampled for their own home enjoyment. Rolling Rivers Spirits is slightly tucked away into the building it resides in but just follow the signs. For a small group the bar is fitting, the distillery feels a bit hygienic - hospital like - but maybe that was the lack of music or my lack of memory of music. read more
