Maple Leaf Paving and Masonry

The job began…read moreby Maple Leaf, unannounced, leaving machinery in our driveway, assuming we would not need the space for several days. We did not even know they were planning to start until coming home to equipment in our driveway. Then, equipment broke down on first day of actual work, rendering our drive blocked for 2 days. This after no-showing the initial start date. The project manager was MIA for over a week without any communication, just unreachable. They eliminated part of the job without discussion, which was the right decision but did not reduce price and was not even a conversation. The project manager offered free sealing to accommodate for the inconveniences and lack of communication. Once the job was complete, he insisted they could only be paid cash/Venmo, despite having my paid-in-full check in hand. He stated his bank was unable to process a deposit due to another large deposit from a separate job. It made no sense, but I wanted to be kind. After being paid in full via Venmo, he requested I recall the payment to avoid fees. After several weeks of back and forth, awaiting my refund from Venmo, I paid him cash. He assured me the company would be in touch to schedule promised sealing. There was no call. I reached out, attempting to schedule the sealing. They completely ghosted me, only responding when threats of contacting BBB were made. They never sealed the drive. The process began well (seemed trustworthy), but ended with a feeling of having been ripped off and repeatedly lied to.

The wall was done quickly and the quality is good per our building inspector, though he did say there were a few things he would've done differently. It is warrantied for 5 years. Shortly after the wall was finished, I provided the final payment with the understanding the job would be finished the following day. Two months later, after rescheduling 5 times for many reasons, the driveway patch was done yesterday. They resealed the driveway for free for our inconvenience. I paid $9500 for all work done. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

The Superior Chimney Sweep

The Superior Chimney Sweep

When I was buying my house, I asked the seller to have the chimney cleaned (something he admitted…read morehe had never done despite making extensive use of the wood-burning furnace that he talked up as a major selling point). He clearly wasn't careful about the company he used, because he came back and told us that they determined that the liner needed replacing and that it would cost $2,500 to repair. He couldn't provide a written estimate, though, because the company wanted a $100 fee to put it in writing. He didn't have the patience to deal with this and offered to just rebate me half of the $2,500 to make it go away. The $100 fee for a written estimate was a huge red flag that he was being deliberately ripped off by one of the many unscrupulous companies in this industry. After taking ownership of the house (and taking the seller's $1,250), I did some research to identify the most reputable local chimney sweep I could find, which was Superior Chimney Sweep. Not surprisingly given their reputation and the fall season, they were booked up for weeks. When my appointment finally came, I told the technician only that I just bought the house and needed to be sure the chimney was ready for use. He inspected it and determined that it needed a cleaning (the company hired by the seller was such a ripoff that they hadn't even cleaned the chimney). I asked if anything else needed attention, such as the liner, and he said it was all in good working order. He suggested maybe considering a chimney cap in the future, but didn't push the issue at all. He spent about an hour giving the chimney a very thorough cleaning, and was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The price was extremely fair for the work that was done, and for the peace of mind of knowing it was done right. Bottom line, it's super important to find a reputable chimney sweep, and Superior is a company that you can trust. (And no matter what company you use, if they're telling you that you need expensive repairs, get it in writing and get at least a second estimate!)

And even better -- there was no sales pitch for a new pellet stove, only honesty, courtesy, and excellent work. We should have gone to Superior first to clean our chimney! They have the best reputation in the region for a good reason. Thank you, Bob!!
