Every point of contact from sales, to crew, to the company owner (a great guy who helped us out between jobs by trouble shooting a leaky basement issue that turned out to be related to the attached neighbor's house fault gutter system), to the office staff are informative, friendly and honest. I worked with Don at Roland Slate, who was great and stayed on top of questions during the process and contracting. Scheduling got a bit bumpy, as I ended up calling in to find out when it was happening as last I'd heard was 'by the end of the month' but also that there was a week left and I hadn't heard anything. By calling Friday, I found out that the crews were going to be out Monday! So I made a quick few adjustments to get everything ready. The "fan plan" does help with a discount, which - in full disclosure - does require this and one other review be posted, though doesn't make any stipulations as to the level ratings on it. It also required a yard sign (That they never put up before or during the work) -- However, with this included, their pricing still wasn't the cheapest, even among slate roof companies, but I will say the quality of the work was great. Contractually, it mentions that the crew will advise when works completed and go over everything with you. When the work was complete, however, the crew packed up and left end of day; it looked complete, but I wasn't sure if they were done yet, and only found out if they were done when I got an email that the work had been completed. Would highly recommend for the quality if you don't mind a few bumps along the way. read more

Roland Slate serviced my 84 year old slate roof in the DC suburbs. Following an estimation last month, the two man crew arrived punctually and went over things with me. I had a green laser pointer and pointed to my concerns and they used it to point some other things out. Work proceeded smoothly, cleanup was good. They addressed a couple of small items they noticed while repairing the main areas. Good company, reasonable price and hard workers on site. Highly recommend them as a go to for slate roof repairs and maintenance. read more

I contracted Roland Slate to inspect and repair the slate roof on my 100+ year old home. Their prices seemed a little high but after seeing their work and understanding their process I felt comfortable hiring them. Communication can be a bit tough at times but eventually everything was squared away. Due to the price I did have to split my project into multiple parts and as a result have only halfway completed the repairs to my roof at the time of this writing. The crew that came to do the work was very respectful and cleaned the property after they were done. Since the project completion I have not had any issues with the repairs. I will be looking forward to working with Roland Slate in the future to finish repairing my roof once I am able to make the payments. *Note: Roland Slate does not offer a military discount at the time of this review. read more

Roland Slate did a great job rebuilding our nearly 100 year old chimney. Our goal was to make it look like it had always been there, and they successfully did that for us. Nick also worked with us to prepare and qualify for the MD Historical Tax credit. Like other reviews, however, the communication with the actual work crews were a little odd. The head mason showed up and walked around our property with no heads-up, no scheduled appointment. I feel the office staff should keep clients informed of all on-site activity. Our neighbors nearly called the police! This happened twice. The crew also walked through my fragile flower beds (early spring) despite a sign placed clearly asking them not to. We had to go out and ask them to stop. This happened multiple times. Roland Slate is pricey, but in the end the final product is excellent -- especially for historic homes -- even if the road to get there is a little bumpy. read more

We have had minor repairs (replacing missing/broken slates) to bigger jobs with replacement of our dormer roof involving lots of copper work. Over the past few years, we'd lost some slate from our roof so I contacted Roland Slate for a free estimate. Received a prompt reply to schedule the visit for the estimate (2 other companies I reached out to never even got back to me). Don came out and took a look at the roof and promptly sent me an estimate. He did explain that there was a 6-week wait to schedule the work, but nothing was leaking so that was fine. I was interested in ensuring we'd have no leaks in the future. I reached back out a few months later (we had gotten distracted with some family issues) still expecting to wait 6 weeks or more for the work to be completed as it was winter. Heard from Kim to schedule the work about 4 weeks later and the crew came out as scheduled. They completed the work (replacing tiles and resealing ridges) in the time they communicated, but they did not communicate anything to me before leaving my property except to say that they were done. I believed everything that was stated in the contract had been done and that the work stated in the contract was all that was needed. Three days later, I got a voicemail from the field manager at Roland Slate stating that it appears the roof needs additional work. Needless to say, I was unpleasantly surprised that this additional work wasn't included in the initial estimate. I expected that estimate to include a complete assessment of the state of the roof. I will be meeting with him next week, hopefully to resolve this in a satisfactory manner. read more

I called Don at Roland Slate after my husband noticed a birds nest in our attic behind our gutter, in our 1940's rowhome. Don came out quickly to assess the situation and also did a full inspection of our slate roof. He caught a few things that needed to be repaired and some things past roofers had missed. Their prices are not the cheapest, but their reputation for doing quality work is what was important to us. We have learned in the past that if you go with the cheapest quote, you get what you pay for. Don's crew arrived and did the work promptly and were very informative the entire time. They also did a beautiful job of cleaning up. We will definitely be using them for roof repairs in the future, and will be recommending them to our neighbors and friends. read more

After some poor experiences with other roofers, I wanted a roofer that I felt could repair a slate roof correctly and called Roland Slate. They were courteous, knowledgeable and the repair crew was very thorough and professional. The work seems to have been done well and the cost was fair. I'm satisfied with the work and would use them again. I only gave 4 stars because communication wasn't the easiest and there were a couple of snafus. I'm attributing that to a new system they are using. The difficulties in communicating seem to have been technical rather than the fault of the people working there. I am highly pleased with the services at the Roland Slate Service Co. The sales estimator Chris Rawlinson was quite helpful in showing that a light colored roof was not a good choice because we have black walnut trees and that their droppings would stain the roof (just like they now stain the sidewalk). I contacted Roland Slate because my new homeowner's insurance company told me that I needed to get work done on my roof or they would cancel me. Chris came out and inspected my roof and told me that it still had some life in it but may need some work done in the upcoming years. He wrote a report stating same and that helped me get the insurance company off my back. Later on, I called him back to get the gutter and some optional work done on my roof. The salesman, Nick was friendly and responsive. We were told they would call ahead of time to schedule but after 6 weeks I had to call to follow up. They scheduled the next day after apologizing for being backed up. The roofers were several hours late. They did repair work and so we hope that it corrects the issue.
