The cost for Grier Argall Plumbing to install two separately located 40 gallon natural gas hot water heaters is $7245. This estimate does not include the cost of a $600 permit. The estimate did not specify whether it included hauling away of the old hot water heaters. We like Grier Argall Plumbing's reputation of workmanship. However, we can only give two stars for the pricing and the lack of return phone call for clarification of pricing. Other comparable, licensed and well established plumbing contractors in the county quoted $4900 to install two separately located single 40 gallon hot water heaters, and $5900 to install a single 50 gallon hot water heater. To be clear, neither of these aforementioned prices included the permit. Though, it did include hauling away of the old hot water heaters. Frankly, with insurance and inflation cost, we suspect prices have gone up for everyone, but to this degree not in our experience of 40 years of property management. That is to say, we have seen a single 40 gallon hot water installation (in and out) with a one-man licensed plumber performed in three hours. We have seen prices for hot water installation at $1500-$1700 (all in) parts and labor, NOT including permit cost. Even if we pump that installation price up for inflation, overhead and insurance to $2200, that is still an average of a $1200 for three hours of labor, or $400 per hour for labor, insurance and overhead on $1000 in parts.
