Burkell was very responsive when the gas pilot went out and arrived same day to evaluate my water heater (thanks Ever and Jake - 5-stars). When it was determined that I needed additional parts, installation, they were quick to order the parts and install next day. It came at a premium price, but grateful now for hot water, and supporting a family business. I would have given additional stars, but they did not disclose upfront, that I would be paying a credit card transaction fee. Had I known, I would have provided an alternative method of payment. The transaction fee was $47 (over 3.25% of my hefty bill). Tip: They only accept credit card, cash, check - no Venmo, Zelle. **Do be sure to ask about the transaction fee before paying and it isn't disclosed. Lastly, a corner of my panel was damaged during install, and I addressed via email, but never heard back. If you're reading this, Burkell, please respond back as I would be happy to revise my review. Owner Jake was incredibly rude. I had a recent service call, no issue was found, and I was charged $325, for 25 minutes of time. No tools required. This was quite a bit more than I was quoted for a service call, and no mention had been made about an hourly rate beyond the call fee, or a minimum one-hour charge. I have been a Burkell customer for specific plumbing work and repairs for over 10 years. When I called to find out why the charge differed so significantly from the quote, Jake questioned me twice about why I did not call a San Rafael plumber (what?) instead of his company. Gee, when I paid over $1600 for each of the last two jobs from Burkell, he didn't ask me then why I hadn't called a San Rafael Plumber. Jake also repeatedly berated me for not asking the plumber who came to my door for an 'estimate'. There was no work found to be done, so I don't know why I would have asked for an estimate. At no time during our conversation, did Jake explain the fee or justify the cost by telling me the hourly rate Burkell charges. No apology was made for any misunderstanding. No value placed on a longstanding customer relationship. He was very confrontational. When I suggested to Jake that it sounded like he was telling me to take my business elsewhere, he said maybe I should . . . so I will. read more

We have had two bad experiences with Burkell. They installed a tankless water heater system for us and never replaced the T or shut-off valves as part of the installation so we've had to deal with squealing and groaning pipes. Another plumber was able to identify the source of the sounds and quickly ascertained that Burkell did an incomplete job when they installed the tank. We had a separate issue regarding a sewer ejector pump that stopped working. The technician Burkell sent out had no clue what the issue was and incorrectly identified it as an electrical problem. A subsequent electrician visit correctly identified the issue pertaining to the pump. Not only did the Burkell technician have no idea how to identify the problem, we were then told to hire an electrician and were still charged by Burkell for a useless visit. The management was rude and did nothing when we complained about the poor service. I would not recommend these plumbers to anyone. There are many better options out there (Dan's Plumbing, Divine, etc). read more

Once again, my husband and I were overwhelmed by the excellent service we received from Burkell Plumbing today. I called to schedule an appointment to have a heater & a furnace inspected for safely & cleanliness. I'm always greeted by a gracious individual ready to help. I was told a cancellation was just received and Ever De Leon Morales could be here within an hour! Within 30 minutes he arrived. He inspected and cleaned a wall heater, and inspected, cleaned, put a new filter in the furnace. He checked out both thermostats, replaced batteries, and serviced our heating necessities in record time. These guys are great. We have used them for 25 years. They are straight forward and reliable. We just had a ln old water heater go out and I was expecting the worst and being told to replace it. Upon inspection, they said this is a solid water heater and it's just the thermocoupler, fixed it for a very reasonable charge. We have paid these people more than $15,000.00 in recent years, and their technicians/plumbers are mostly competent. However, their management is arrogant, Marin County rule, and not professional so we have decided to terminate services. One other problem: Burkell refuses to provide hard copy invoices and requires ridiculous signature affidavits on their I-pads before leaving our premises. read more

The most expensive plumbers on the planet. Not because they are worth every penny, but because they are of a small group of plumbers who can charge what they like. A cartel if you wish. And a bit dishonest. We recently needed a small repair job., They knew what we needed, yet in the middle of the project - we are only talking a few hours worth of work, they had to drive back to the shop to pickup a tool. Well knowing that tool would be useful doing the project a normal person would bring it ( they seem to carry a small hardware store in each of their trucks) but in this case tried to wing it, and that hour of them driving back to their shop, cost us approximately an additional 250 dollars. I needed to get some repair work done last year at a rental property and called Burkell. I honestly don't remember exactly what happened with the work they did, but they must have surprised me with the price because if I had agreed to it up front, I would have paid--I ALWAYS pay bills promptly for work I've agreed to. I called the office to say that what they were charging was too much. I told them what I was willing to pay, in order to at least negotiate the price with them. They told me, "don't worry about it, you don't have to pay anything." I asked, "Are you sure?" They confirmed that I didn't have to pay. So a few weeks ago, I needed a plumber again (the warranty program told me to hire someone and they would cover it). Burkell told me that they wouldn't send anyone because my file was marked "Refused to pay." I told them, I had NOT refused to pay, I had complained and they told me I didn't have to pay. They finally hung up on me. I took it very personally, because I don't do what they accused me of doing. So I called back to try to clear my "record." We talked for a while, and they told me only the owner can have that removed. I left a message for the owner, asking him to call me so we could talk about it. I never heard back. He obviously doesn't care enough to bother with me. So I got a different plumber, a one-man shop who charges half as much and he did a great job. I would never use Burkell again. read more

Had a wonderful experience with Trent installing a new faucet in our kitchen and noticing that some of the pipes under the sink were corroded and replacing them. I have used Burkell Plumbing (Sausalito) in the past for my house heater. They came again today, this time for a hot water heater issue. As usual, they are the nicest people! Got a call early this morning asking if Chris could come earlier than 3-4pm window time I had scheduled late yesterday afternoon. They understood my hot water heater was out and did not want us without hot water. They did not know I have a disabled child in the house and bumping up the appt time helped immensely! Fixed in a jiff! They always answer their phone, they always respond promptly, they always show up and on time. I have also used them in the past for my place of business! I requested an estimator visit to review the significant plumbing repair I need and provide a loose estimate for the work. He came, he looked, then he told me at the last moment he needed $74 for the visit, which I paid. Weeks later I still had heard nothing back from the company re: an estimate. I tried contacting the estimator, front office and the company owner multiple times and received no response. Several voice mails and email were ignored. Never even got a "thanks but no thanks". I am now filing a Contractor's License Board complaint. RIP OFF ARTISTS. Do not give them any money in advance. I am a professional interior architect and deal with contractors all the time on all sizes of jobs. These people are not to be trusted. read more

Beware of Burkell's overcharging! They will take advantage of you, and you can't trust what they tell you. Their plumber charged $775 to replace a 1" pressure regulator with an hour and a quarter labor. When questioned, he said it was $400 just for the part, so I stupidly paid, but then saw the exact part from the same manufacturer for $182 from Grainger or Home Depot. I called the office for an explanation but just got more clearly false statements, and a promise that the owner would call me back, which he never did. read more

No follow up despite informing them that the interior temperature of the home was in the 40's and a cancer patient was living there. Waited 2.5 weeks before finally calling another service. Had a seemingly classic drain backup. Called Burkell who we've relied on for first assessments for years. Charges always seemed heavy but local guys seemed ok. Don't know what's happened, but they now appear fixated on overcharging AND underperforming. Spent a day snaking with a second person just standing around. $1500 later no fix. Said maybe call roto rooter, they've got special tools chemicals we lack. OK.... Did that and they came out and was fixed in one hour $250 charge. subsequent calls to owner Jake seeking answer to why they spend so much time if lacking proper equipment and requesting an adjustment, have not been returned. They act like they have a local monopoly. Only part of that that's true is local. Now that I read other evaluations I see am not alone. plenty of other providers who seem not compelled to flush their own reputation for quick bucks. Bye bye, Burkell! read more

Unfortunately, I need to downgrade my review. I have had nothing but problems with my new tankless water heater running hot and cold... and lower water pressure than I would like. Burkell Plumbing really, really tried hard and actually came five times but could not replicate the intermittent changing of temperature and the ongoing low me water pressure problem. That's OK. I was initially very happy at their commitment and how hard they tried! I understand these problems are difficult to resolve and I appreciate that. The reason I'm writing is the last time I called. I talked to one of their representatives, who treated me in an angry and derisive fashion. Because of this I am not going back to Burkell Plumbing. I am hiring a different plumbing firm to return my water to a traditional tank water heater. I have researched the Internet and apparently these tankless water heaters are full of issues so I could not recommend to anyone to try one of those. It's very unfortunate that one employee of Burkell Plumbing chose to treat me that way - everyone else, including the owner, was very patient and very kind and they did try very, very hard to resolve the issue.. after researching the Internet I did find that this is a common problem with tankless water heaters and apparently one that is difficult to overcome. I am very disappointed in this one employee. I seriously regret having to downgrade this review. read more

Asked the plumber to feel the rough buildup that seemed to me to be clogging toilet paper in my toilet. He said "I dont normally feel the inside of toilet bowls". Are you kidding me! You're a plumber!!?? He had attitude and after trying to "clean out" the toilet and finding something that looked like dirt in the toilet, he was done. I asked what it was and he did not know. I asked what to do about it and if it was normal, he didn't know. Turns out it was limestone and calcium deposits, which in actuality, can clog a toilet! And for his attitude and lack of knowledge, the bill was 205.00 I have used Burkell for 20 years. This is the last time. read more

My father has used this business in the past, was pleased, so called them again. Before anyone even came out they required a CC over the phone to even schedule an appointment. He had a leak where the water comes into the house and with water issues in the area he called for repair. Part was replaced and he was charged a reasonable amount for that visit. Two days later he had a leak inside the house caused when old pressure gauge went out.Somehow plumber didn't stop and think this could happen. Admittedly the gauge must have needed replacing but that is not my complaint. Gauge was replaced and "other" work was done that was NOT consulted on nor approved of. To this day he does not know what if anything else was done. When he got his CC bill he found that they had charged him $650 for that second visit. My Dad called requesting an invoice to see what he was being charged for and OWNER said "We don't do business that way, NO INVOICES". Owner kept saying he needed to speak with the worker to find out what work he had done. My father told him he needed to know what he was being charged for and over the course of weeks and many phone calls back and forth there was no resolution. After 30 days you cannot get help from your CC company or stop a payment so I feel certain this was purposely being drawn out. Owner showed up at my father's door with his worker who could not even look up, remained silent and never said a word.Owner barked " What is it going to take to make this go away?" My dad is 93 YEARS OLD, ALONE AND IN A WHEELCHAIR and was treated so poorly it broke my heart.I am 500 miles away or I would have jumped at the chance to take over in this fight. My Dad said he would pay 1/2 the bill only which was still twice what the charge should have been. Again he ask to know what work was done and again OWNER yelled "We don't do business that way." With that OWNER got up, stomped out of the house without a word and left. If I could have left a review with less than one star I would have. I'm disappointed with my experience with Burkell Plumbing. They were recommended to me by a friend. Initially, appreciated the receptionist and the timeliness of scheduling. However, i feel like the job was note done well and I was charged for the plumbers mistakes. I had a toilet issue where the handle would get stuck down. Rather than fixing the direct problem, the Plummer felt it would be most efficient to replace all of the inside parts-which i was charged for. The toilet is in a guest room so used very infrequently. A few weeks later, i noticed the same problem was happening. I called Burkell, and they sent the plumber right away. I thought i would not be charged for this visit, but i subsequently was. He still couldn't figure out the problem so then replaced the handle (since everything else inside had been replaced the prior time). Ultimately, it was just the flush lever that was rubbing on the side of the toilet and needed to be bent a little toward the inside of the tank. After all this, i was charged for all parts and both times the plumber came to my house, despite him not fixing the problem in the first place, and the parts not having an issue. In addition, the second part of his job was to disconnect and re connect the kitchen sink/disposal around a countertop installation. All the parts (pipes, disposal/dishwasher) were new. It is 1 month later, and i just checked under the sink and there is a leak. I am so frustrated. I called to speak to the manager, and was connected to the owner. I left a message and haven't heard back. I've paid this company close to $800, and am extremely disappointed in their work. read more

Plus - quick response and polite, knowledgeable technicians. Minus - charge you by the hour even if they don't resolve the problem. If you're lucky enough to have something small that can be resolved in one visit probably ok. Also probably okay if you have a major repair that requires a lot of expertise. - but my experience was writing checks for multiple visits and then ultimately fixing the issue myself after ordering a part from the manufacturer (for about half the price I was quoted from Burkell) for my radiant heat system and following a YouTube video to fix it myself. read more

This is the second time I've commented on Yelp about Burkell Plumbing. They are fantastic. I should know because I have had several occasions in the past two years to reach out to them. They have installed a new furnace and air conditioning, new toilet and a new water heater. They have repaired leaky pipes and lastly did a clean out of a blocked drain. With an older home things wear out. Every time we call they make the effort to get out ASAP. Chris is their service manager. He is great. Easy to work with and appreciates our business. So far no call backs on any installation. Prices are very fair considering Marin County. Burkell is a family business and while I wish I didn't have to call them so often, " I feel part of the family". You won't find better plumbers in Marin then Burkell. read more

It's been a hot summer, and PG&E came to light the pilot and do a safety check, woo hoo!! For the first time in YEARS, the pilot lit, and stayed lit! My landlord is here today, said that he contacted Jake at Burkell but that he didn't know me; true, he doesn't, but he was here, and fixed my heater!! I'm pleased, the landlord is pleased and hoping to hire Burkell for other properties. Word of mouth is sometimes better than YELP! read more
