We used Burkell Plumbing for two different jobs - a water heater replacement and consultation about a gas line connection for a clothes dryer. The water heater replacement process was essentially a turn key process - they visited our home that afternoon, provided an estimate, and suggested a smaller, less expensive replacement based upon our utilization and needs. When asked about upgrades such as a tankless water heater or hybrid, they clearly explained the pros and cons along with their recommendations for us. They could have easily presented a sales case for more a more expensive water heater but instead gave an honest appraisal of the options. The installation was very professional, reflected care for our home, and they cleaned the area above and beyond my expectations. The second consultation was for a gas line supplying a clothes dryer. I was uncertain about the code requirements and was considering a relocation of the supply line. I asked the technician about his recommendations after suggesting a significant modification of the line location. He said that the relocation was not necessary and he saved me money. These two examples show that Burkell Plumbing is honorable. About me - I generally do not leave negative reviews for small businesses - I contact them directly about any concerns. Water Heater failure. From the first call I was impressed! I was given a slot same day - they immediately called me back and gave me an earlier appointment. Jacob turned up and was both professional and honest. Within 30 minutes we were given several options and went with a replacement 3 hrs later installed and we have a new water heater, warranty on the work and on the heater itself. I have used Burkell Plumbing every year for my back-flow testing and they have always been wonderful. Last week during the cold spell our heater stopped working, and I honestly didn't think of Burkell straight away. I definitely would have for plumbing. Big mistake, I called another company in Marin, they kept telling me their scheduler was busy/on another line & would call me back. After 4 calls back & forth they finally told me they couldn't get to me until after Thanksgiving. I saw Burkell Plumbing listed on Next Door & it dawned on me I should have called them first! One call to Linda & she had Michael out to my house the next day! He called to let me know he was on his way, he diagnosed & fixed my blown fuse & changed my corroded batteries right away. My heater now works - before Thanksgiving!!! My invoice was emailed to me within the hour, at a reasonable price & I am a happy customer. I had a very frustrating call with Burkell receptionist, Linda, who clearly did not want my business. She demanded a credit card # from me before even an assessment of diagnosis or SOW discussion, and was indifferent to the fact that I do not provide CC #s without security measures being taken. As an executive in the customer experience and service business world, I am amazed when business providers do not give respect to their paying customers. Some of their guys are unethical, others are great. I used them for years and was happy. I needed a simple toilet install and called them. The guy they sent out went into this big song and dance about the floor not being level, said they would have to pour a new floor or build a platform to the tune of thousands...it sounded crazy to me so I sent him on his way. They charged me $300 for his time. I called and left a message with the owner and got nowhere...I just paid it. If you want to be overcharged this is a good company to use. Furnace needed a part ($30) which took 15 minutes along with a new thermostat ($80) took less than 1 hour but got charged $342. When I called them about it and told them they put in the wrong thermostat they said they had a minimum charge for the 2nd visit - even though it was their fault. Also, when they gave an estimate for 1 year maintenance on a boiler for $199 they informed me that they charge an extra $200 for air/fuel mixture measurement which is included in the other companies bids I talked to. Beware! We were long time customers of Burkell because they used to be an honest & professional company, but that's clearly changed. We have an old pipe in our bathroom and they sent out a guy to "fix" it. After approx. 6 visits and lots of money, the pipe is still not fixed and we're still not able to use our upstairs bathroom (it's been 6 months). We've repeatedly called them to get answers, but they haven't returned our phone calls and have completely blown us off. It seems like they were either intentionally not fixing the pipe & charging us, and/or taking advantage of our patience, or just didn't want to fix it. We were beyond understanding of the situation and were trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, given our yrs. of working with them. We ended up reaching out to another plumber who's been communicative, upfront, and honest about fixing the pipe. They've quoted us half of what Burkell did and have scheduled the work to only take a few hrs. They also don't collect payment until they've actually finished the work. If Burkell wants to stay in business, I recommend they read some of these reviews and maybe care more. I'd also suggest that they instill more integrity into their business practices and treat their long-term customers with respect. read more

He explained the differences in types and brands of toilets, with a strong recommendation for Toto. I called back with my selection and a few days later Rachel called and scheduled a 9:00 to 10:00 installation time . Well, right at 9:00 Bill arrived with our new throne. He was pleasant and efficient and it was apparent that he knew his stuff. There was a hiccup when an item from the factory was missing. Turns out he had to go to San Rafael for it. He made great time and had our new Toto installed. The price was as quoted over the phone. Bill was great and if I could request a plumber in the future, it would be him. We recently had a shower with a bad leak, and initially chose a local Mill Valley plumbing service (which will remain nameless) based on the very high reviews on Yelp. Boy, was that a mistake! The man who came out brought a condescending attitude, couldn't figure out how to remove the shower handle faceplate, and he said he'd have to knock a hole in the wall to get at the shower cutoff valves, if there even was cutoff valves. Alternatively, he offered to cut and cap the shower water lines in the basement for $250, leaving us with a non-functional shower -- but at least the leak would be fixed (eyeball roll). Lastly, he estimated a $3000, all-day repair job to replace the shower fixtures, which is daylight robbery. For that kind of money, we should get a remodeled bathroom! So we called out Burkell Plumbing instead, on a neighbor's recommendation. What a difference! Jeff from Burkell came out that same morning. He arrived early and got straight to it, popped the faceplate off, diagnosed the problem and had the leak fixed and the shower fully operational in a little over an hour! I am extremely disappointed with the service I received from Burkell Plumbing. When I called initially, the lady on the phone told me that they have a $75 charge for coming out and giving an estimate, but that it should only take the plumber about 30 minutes or so she thought. Because of the roughly $175-$200 quote over the phone, I made an appointment for them to come check out my sink. I had them to my apartment this past Monday to fix the bathroom sink, which should be a simple job virtually any plumber can handle. The technician fixed the two water shut off valves under the sink and began replacing the faucet, which I purchased separately from a local hardware store. The plumber then bemoaned the original steel sink and said that he was unable to install the drain because it was so rusted out. Wondering what we should do next, the technician volunteered that, "He thinks they have a new sink back at the shop that he can replace it with." I consented, against my better judgement. He returned about 30 minutes (or $75 depending how you look at it) later, empty handed, and gave me recommendations as to where I could purchase a sink. The plumber then handed me a bill for $312. I begrudgingly paid the man and then began to assess the situation. When the plumber arrived, I had a semi-functional sink and faucet. When he left, I had a gaping hole in my vanity where my sink used to be, a brand new faucet sitting still in the box on top of the vanity, and no itemized list of charges on the bill, just a $312 total ($112 over the original quote). That is not the reason I gave Burkell a one star rating though ... When I called their office to request an itemized list of the charges I was repeatedly blown off and my calls were sent to a voicemail box that evidently never gets checked or is simply ignored. I know this because between my girlfriend and I we called 6 times and left 4 separate voicemails, none of which were returned. I am incredibly dissatisfied about my experience with Burkell Plumbing. I was overcharged, ignored, lied to, and basically duped. There are too many plumbers in Marin County to give your business to Burkell, do yourself and your pocketbook a favor and call someone else. read more
