These people came out to unclog a drain in our sink. The plumber was on premises for over an hour. He set up a drop cloth and went to work. He couldn't seem to unclog the drain for a while. He kept going out to his truck to get more equipment because apparently the problem required more tools/heavier equipment. We heard a couple of loud banging noises and went over to see what was going on but the plumber was still working so we assumed everything was fine. The plumber tested the drain and it was unclogged. Problem solved, or so we thought. The plumber packed up and left. A few hours later we found out what made the loud banging sound. The plumber had put a crack into our hardwood floors. He must have dropped (or threw down) his heavy tools and damaged the floor. The thin blanked they used for a drop cloth didn't protect against that kind of force. We immediately called John Owens Services and left a message (since it was now after hours). We called back in the morning and they said they wanted to see pictures so we provided them. They said they wanted to send someone out to look and assess the damage. We agreed. They set an appointment to assess but nobody showed. We called and they said they were sorry and would send John Owen's himself (I guess he does exist). John came out. He seemed like a nice man who cared about his customers. He admitted fault and said he would fit it and make it right. He said he had a guy in his staff who could fix these types of things. He said if that didn't work he had a long standing relationship with a hardwood floor company in San Rafael and they would come out and fix. We felt like we were going to be taken care of and this would be made right. A week later the guy on his staff came out. He assessed the damage and said he could fix. We left him alone for 20 minutes but all he basically did was draw on the floor and try to color it in with some pencils. I wish I was joking. I get that there are pencils that can fix some hardwood floor damage but this was a crack. Pencils weren't fixing it. It needed to be repaired. The guy left and said someone would be in touch. That was a month ago. We've called John Owen's services several times. They always answer, are always, always say they are sorry and someone or John himself will get back to us immediately. Nobody ever does. It's just lip service at this point and we are stuck with a damaged floor. This place might be able to fix your plumbing, heating, or cooling issue, but be sure they don't damage anything becuase they will disappear and leave you with the bill. read more

Review of John Owens Heating & Air Conditioning (Petaluma) I recently had a very disappointing experience with John Owens Heating & Air Conditioning in Petaluma. I have a new home that required a full installation of air-conditioning equipment, a new hot water heater, and a new furnace. At the outset, the experience was excellent. The salesman was prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. Both my contractor and I were impressed. He assessed our needs carefully and provided a bid that--while high--seemed justified by the quality of the equipment and what we were led to believe would be reliable service. Unfortunately, once the bill was paid, everything changed. The very first night after installation, the hot water heater did not work because the pilot light had never been lit. That should never have happened in a new installation. Over the next couple of weeks, it became clear that the furnace system was badly imbalanced. The lower floor of the house--where two bedrooms are located--was freezing, while the upper floor was excessively warm. This appeared to be a relatively simple adjustment. I scheduled three separate service appointments to address this issue. Each time, the appointment was either canceled or changed within 24 hours by the company. The office staff insisted they had given adequate notice, which was not accurate. I had already hired someone to be present at the house to meet their technicians, so I incurred additional costs each time. The behavior of the front office staff was especially troubling. They were dismissive, condescending, and spoke to me as if I were a child. I was addressed casually by my first name and told that they had "no time" to come because there were "older people with no heat at all." I explained--repeatedly--that I had no heat on the entire lower floor of my home, but this seemed to carry no weight whatsoever. The overall message I received was clear: once the equipment is installed and paid for, the customer is no longer a priority. As of now, my heating system is still not properly balanced. I have yet another appointment scheduled weeks out, and frankly, I have little confidence they will even show up. For a company charging premium prices, this level of service--or lack thereof--is unacceptable. I would not recommend John Owens Heating & Air Conditioning. Their follow-through is poor, their office staff is rude and inconsistent, and they do not stand behind their work. This experience has been shocking and deeply disappointing. read more

John Owens company charged me $1500 for a job that took 1 hour I complained to this since this was outrageous price gouging. They told me a valve was $600 when it was selling at Home Depot for $60. After going around with them, they agreed to bring the bill to $800 which was still price gouging. I am on fixed income and I think there needs to be better price regulation for Electricians. First of all most of the time, you have a bad experience with a handyman not so with this company they are reliable respond fast, and are on time in their appointments. We had a small repair to do in our guest bathroom. The estimate was more expensive than we thought, the repair itself was a small thing to do but they had to go through the garage to get to the points of repairs so it was a two-man job and that adds to the price. So we made a second appointment for them to show up and do the actual work. They did it and they did a Good and effective job - and in the end, they even didn't charge the amount of the estimate. Since the job have been done faster then estimated. I think that is an honors business And very rare these days - so I highly recommend this company. The pipe under our kitchen sink started to drip. Next day, nothing would go down the sink at all even after we tried to clear it with vinegar and baking soda (not recommended!) and a plunger. Not being able to use your kitchen sink is a first world problem, but it is a disruptive one. John Owens came quickly, even though we are in a rural location. The fellow (Will) worked really hard for two hours but could not get the sink to drain. He had to return the next day with more powerful equipment. He and his partner finally succeeded in clearing the blockage. Luckily it was not a broken pipe under the slab foundation of our home. Will and his partner worked impressively hard and were careful to cover their shoes each time they entered the house. Before he left, Will checked repeatedly to make sure the problem was fixed. It cost a pretty penny, that's for sure, but I have no way to compare what another company would have charged. I felt lucky to have such a responsive company come, such a hardworking plumber figure it out, and such a fine resolution to a problem that could have been much worse. DO NOT USE SERVICES. My A/C unit was low on refrigerant due to a suspected leak. Technician came out, pressurized the system and determined it must be a minor leak due to the system maintaining pressure. He introduced a dye but couldn't find a leak. Keep in mind that this was all done in about 20 minutes. After speaking with a true professional, the appropriate course of action would be to introduce the dye and wait for a week or more to allow the dye to circulate properly in order to use a specific light to locate a minor leak. The system is 10 feet to the coil, so the leak should be easily located. In addition to this, my dog had urinated on the unit and there was extensive corrosion. The tech told me that in all his years he had never seen dog urine ruin an AC unit, which was complete and utter crap. After not finding a leak, the tech introduced sealant, and then recharged the unit. Keep in mind, recharging an AC unit with a different refrigerant without first evacuating the system can lead to significant problems, including reduced efficiency, potential damage to components, and even system failure. It can also cause chemical reactions, which can lead to formation of acids that corrode parts and create blockages. Of course, once the unit failed again, I called in additional quotes to rectify my issues and learned the correct way to diagnose a leak. The tech was abrupt and curt when I continued to question the process, and seemed irritated that he was being questioned at all. I paid $1000 dollars to have my AC unit work for about 2 weeks before it ran out of refrigerant. The following company said the process to find the leak and repair it would be several visits, and the initial visit would be about 4 hours. At this point, why avoid the inevitable and keep throwing good money after bad. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE- they are a hit and run agency. read more

Great service ! I had my heating ducts removed and replaced under my house due to rodent damage. The technician Jairo and his helper did a fantastic install. The work was very clean and they also through in a few extras such as changing out my thermostat wire from a 2 wire to a 3 wire so that I can run the fan without heat. First, my wife wasn't pleased with where I decided to put the new AC unit. Even though installation was near complete, the technicians moved the unit to an entirely new site for us. I called John Owens to check out a 12 year old Triangle Tube boiler that was malfunctioning. The technician came out that afternoon and the following day I received an email invoice for $150 for the evaluation and a proposal and estimate to install a new boiler for $12,054.48 with the caveat that the price could change after a measure up visit. The evaluation stated that "Display board has failed. Boiler starts with a loud explosion. That does not stay running. This boiler has a failed heat exchanger and has lived past its lifespan. This boiler should be replaced. See estimate." I decided to get a second opinion and called Marin Mechanical in San Rafael. The technician arrived that afternoon, replaced the display panel, made a temporary repair to the ignitor and the boiler was working when he left. He returned several days later to install a new ignitor, clean the heat exchanger and perform annual service. Very reasonable charge, no problems since. I highly recommend Marin Mechanical. John Owens, not so much. read more

And the system was installed Friday morning. Communication was spectacular. I received timely and helpful text messages, including which one of their surfers representatives was coming. I called John Owens Services about two things - boiler service and a leaking radiant pipe in the concrete slab. Rowan, one of their technicians, came on Thursday and said he needed more time to service the boiler and that he did not have some parts. He said he could at least turn off the leaking radiant loop temporarily and then reschedule the boiler service and a separate leak detection appointment. He supposedly turned off the radiant loop but I found that the manifold valve screws were still in the vertical position after he left. I took a thermal image a day later (attached) to confirm that the loop was indeed left open. Besides, he used a plier and stripped the nut somewhat. Professionals, especially the ones with so much experience with Eichler homes, need to be aware that these older manifolds are susceptible to damage if you don't use a properly sized wrench. The estimates for part replacements were also pretty high I felt. For example, replacing the plastic condensate overflow hose was $340!!! Replacing the expansion tank and the 12" pipe that connects to it was $600. Anyway, it was rescheduled for Monday 8 AM. Me and may wife had to reshuffle our entire work schedules so I can be home during the service appointment. At 7:38 AM on Monday, I get a text saying the technician cannot make it. The only reason I went with John Owens Services is because of their experience with radiant heating and Eichler homes in this area. However, given my experience so far, I had to cancel the remaining appointments with them. I feel like some of these businesses start of great with the founder who is knowledgeable and understands customer service. Over a period of time, these businesses hire people who don't have the experience or interest and lack the training and supervision that is needed to maintain the same level of customer satisfaction. I cannot speak to the level of service in the past but agree with some of the recent reviews about their current level of service not meeting expectations. read more

I bought another gas valve and had another tech from John Owens Services come back and install it. He did install it but told me the new valve was broken. So he took it apart and left all the parts on the floor. I took the valve back to supplier and he tested it. It worked fine. I called John Owens Service to reinstall the valve but they refused to come and repair my system. Now I have parts all over the floor of the utility closet and a broken heater. When our furnace stopped functioning in the middle of the night during a very cold spell, we were left with no means of heating our house. A call to John Owens brought David, the repairman, out to the house within two hours of our call. David found the problem, but it was beyond reasonable repair, requiring the purchase and installation of a new furnace. Ray was at our home within an hour to give us a quote on not one but four different options of furnaces and warranty options. And best yet, the installation of the new furnace and removal of the old was scheduled for first thing the following morning. Heat to our home returned amazingly quick. read more

One star for this company because their receptionist is a jewel. Set an appointment over the around end of May to assess a solar heating project for my home. Met with their guy, Tim O'Brien1st week of June. He was knowledgeable and courteous. He discussed the logistics of the project and wanted more info from me about particular equipment I wanted used. He said he would speak with the owner about whether they could take this on , being out of there usual area once he received the equipment list. The list was emailed to Tim on the 8th of June. Did not hear anything for a couple of weeks so I sent a text to make sure he got the equipment list- No response. After Juy 4th weekend I sent an email wanting to know if they could do the job, how much and when/ No response !! Finally called the office and inquired if Tim still worked there or had he taken I'll. She told me that was not the case. she assured me I would hear from Tim by end of day. I received a short email that afternoon( 2 months after his site visit) that he had talked to the boss and they could not do the job-good luck..., No apology, he took no responsibility for leaving me hanging for 2 months!! Good for basic services if you don't mind over paying from the flat rate book of death. If you need a new boiler or anything mechanical avoid at all costs. Not only will you be overcharged you will receive a product that is not mechanically sound. As long as you pay the $250 annual service fee for the first 5 years they will keep things limping along. As soon as the 5 years is up get your wallet out, it's going to get pricey. read more
