While searching Yelp for a coffee shop, Rock Espresso Bar came up as one of the most popular options in the area. With so many reviews, I was looking forward to giving it a try. Walking in, you can tell this is a classic neighborhood café. There's nothing overly fancy about it--just a few tables, a small pastry case, and, of course, coffee. One thing that surprised me was the music choice. They were playing what sounded like punk rock, which felt a little out of place for the atmosphere of the café, especially since many of the customers appeared to be older adults. For my order, I went with a blueberry muffin and a cappuccino. The muffin was fresh and flavorful, and the cappuccino was well made. Overall, I was happy with both items. The reason I'm taking off a star is because the employee working during my visit used a lot of profanity while speaking. I understand that casual conversation happens, but I don't think that kind of language is appropriate in a café setting where customers are trying to relax and enjoy their coffee. Overall, I would recommend this place if you're looking for a quick grab-and-go coffee or pastry. So glad I stumbled upon this coffee shop on my motorcycle trip across the states. I was a bit hesitant at first, because often at small coffee shops the coffee is on the sour side. Not here. Both the Americano and cortado were just perfect!. Our Barista, took interest in our destination and upon learning that we were going to Monterey he took time to write a detailed travel plan for us listing food places where we had to stay. Turned out he wasn't just a barista, he was a world class chef who decided to open his coffee shop with the best coffee around! This coffee really made my morning! We had a great experience when visiting with a large group of about 12 people. We ordered a variety of food and drinks and everything we tried was good. As expected with a group our size, there was a bit of a wait, but what stood out was how well the staff managed expectations from the moment we ordered. They were transparent about timing, which made the experience feel organized and considerate rather than frustrating. While some of us were already enjoying our drinks and food, the owner personally came out to thank our group for stopping by. That level of hospitality really stood out. I decided to stop here for a much needed coffee break while heading up to Big Sur to go camping. I got here maybe 45 minutes before they closed and woman working was extremely awesome to talk to while I waited. The small talk was very much appreciated. This café was a wonderful experience all around. The staff were so friendly, even bringing out the food to the dining area rather than I'm just calling my name to grab it. I got a quiche, which looked delicious in the pastry case, and looked even more delicious once they plated and warmed it up for me, adding both avocado and salsa to it. They really care about the food they make here, and it shows through the care with which it is served, even a to go order, as well as the quality and taste. I love the location as well as the ambience of this place. This is an amazing local place with apparently an understandably huge loyal following. I went there at 6:30 am on a Sunday and there were already many customers there. It felt like one big morning neighborhood coffee lovefest. Service is extraordinary- As he got the chance Rudie would check with the others enjoying their food or coffee. He's friendly, wonderfully outrageous and hilarious. Rudie is such a cool upbeat guy - when I cut rudely in line and asked where the bathroom was and oh how are you? He said enthusiastically "living the dream" and good naturedly told me I could use the employees only bathroom but warned me it was hideously small. I forget my manners when I am stressed and tired. I staggered in having had car problems which required us waiting (sleeping in the car) for hours for AAA, and Rudie was especially kind ( You look very nice today) and helpful with my complicated special order and despite my anxious state. There is a wonderful selection of breakfast foods- He made me an amazing Rock Burrito was egg salsa sausage and avocado. It was as delicious as the pictures on Yelp suggested. The coffee selection was also great, and I so loved the special one I ordered. (It appeared that many of the regulars liked ordering the special.). One of the specials that day was the "Jumper Cable" which we thought humorously ironic. Everything about this neighborhood gem is amazing. As noted by more recent reviewers, the service here is sketchy at best, a direct mirror of the owner's character. Daniel (a.k.a "Rudie") is better suited maybe to run a dive bar along with selling some fine cigars alongside in a smoke shop. And, what a talker! He's apt to learn his lesson eventually. You can't just steal someone's identity to purchase a business and expect things to run as well as it had with the previous owner. Shame. read more

I'm kinda picky when it comes to tea, especially with chai since I make it at home with fresh spices. This one is great. The burrito was good. This place is awesome. I've been coming sort of regularly for two years during college and have never had a bad experience. The staff is very friendly, especially Rudy and Kaden, and the conversations you hear in the cafe make it a great study spot. I'm not a coffee connoisseur but it tastes good. The food is super good, especially for a small cafe. Sometimes I go to scout coffee up the street before I go to Rudies just so I can take a dump. Why wouldn't you go to rudies? read more

I ordered a Skinny Vanilla Latte and my daughter ordered a Chai latte. I'm not a strong coffee drinker but it was exactly what I needed. That first sip of hot deliciousness woke my senses and kept me going all day. I'm not big on Chai, but tried my daughter's drink and it was equally delicious. She drank it all so that's saying something. The ambiance was nice as well. Neo-Rockabilly pouring out of the speakers while the barista took and made our orders. Darn! I wish I remembered his name. Charming guy, with a little dry and wacky humor. Super nice! My husband got a coffee cake and he said it was super moist and really good. They baked it so the crumble was in the middle of the cake so it wasn't messy. You could tell it was a local hot spot as the barista knew most of the customers and their orders. We went back to the Rock Espresso Bar because we had loved the Rock burrito so much last time. We should've known that nothing can repeat itself. Here is what we noticed this time: - Took forever to make. - We ordered two burritos, one with bacon and one with sausage and they didn't label either one. - All there was inside was scrambled eggs, a small amount of meat and avocado. What happened to all the rest of the works that the person at the counter told us about? - The burrito shell seemed out of the grocery store. If you're in Morro Bay, this is the place to go for your morning caffeine. Rudie seems to know everyone who walks through the door and everyone is happy to see him. He's funny, friendly and not in a rush. The place has a relaxing morning mood. I learned that he used to be in a band called The Murder Hornets and he gave me a good recommendation for a brunch spot nearby. I got an Americano that was hot and perfect. I also had a triple berry muffin that I'm sure was homemade, not one of those overly sugary ones you get at some places.
