I have used R.B. Payne for HVAC service for years and have been mostly satisfied. They have some great techs who do great work, but a couple years ago, they charged me over $900 to replace a broken $150 thermostat, and it took less than five minutes to do the job. I had my systems replaced a year and a half ago, price was great, installation great. Equipment was great. I just had a problem with one of the two systems that were replaced. The fan was running constantly. They took an hour and a half to find the problem, they went to the shop 15 min away and returned, they replaced the parts in about a half an hour, total price to replace the warranty parts $344.00 for 1 hour of work, $99.00 for diagnostics. I find their labor pricing obscene! Especially since it was warranty parts that were replaced. So $66.00/hr to diagnose and $344.00/hr to replace the parts. I feel like I paid for the parts also. read more

Their new HVAC systems do not match their brochures. Purchased a Trane XL16i 16 Seer HVAC, yet the system rated the SEER rating at 14.5 maximum. In addition, the name of the system purchased is not posted on the system. All you have is the "salesman's" word after installation. $11K system with no verification, but the salesman word. Think long on that statement. This was not transparent in the original conversation. Currently, waiting on the Better Business Bureau as a true third party to help decide the matter. Chose this company to address issue with humidity in home and pre-summer inspection of our heat pump system. Technician made some adjustments and told us unit was fully operational. A week later and first time we turned on A/C it didn't work. Called company back out and was told we had a refrigerant leak and it would $1900 to fix line and replace refrigerant. Found more reputable vendor to make repairs at 40% of Robert B. Payne's cost. The majority of the $1900 cost was for the refrigerant. Going rate is $60/lb and our unit only holds 8 lbs. Payne is grossly overcharging for refrigerant. read more

AC wasn't blowing cold so I called Robert B Payne and had a guy come out and look at it. Found that a TXV valve was bad. Quoted me $2124 to fix it! Insanity! I look up the part online, it is $84. I order it. I don't have the ability to pump the refrigerant out of the lines so I call OHA heating and have them put it in. They charge me $850. Certainly they overcharged me too because it only took one hour to install. But I still got it done, including the cost of the part, for $1190 less than these criminals where going to charge me. Asking these guys to come to your house is the same as inviting a thief into your home. A/C was out. They came the same day. Did a good job and replaced a capacitor. What I take issue with was the pricing. To come out and spend 20 min to replace a $56 capacitor, they charged me $394. There is a new method that plumbers and other appliance repair companies use and that is a 'fixed' price. They will NOT itemize and put down the labor in $/hr and part number and cost. $340 dollars for 20 min work is -= $1020/hr =-. Lawyers don't even get that much. If the Service department manger comes through with a discount (she said she'd try), I'll improve my rating. =====UPDATE====== After three calls to their service person and reminding them of how much they were actually charging per hour if calculated out, the Manager agreed to refund my $89.00 diagnosis fee. They said they'd be willing to send a man out to REMOVE the capacitor and refund my $305, but I felt that would be an unpleasant interaction. I OK'ed the refund. However, MOST services like this will credit you this 'fee' if you hire them, subsequently, to do the work, so I imagine it is not uncommon to try to 'scam' people who don't ask for this credit up front, and those who do are told 'sure, we always credit the diagnosis if you let us do the work'. In addition, I've discovered that the company normally pays about $12.00 to buy this part, given discounts for buying in bulk. Research on Angie's List, shows that MANY people feel cheated and scammed by this kind of 'fixed price' charging. One or two think it's OK, citing that handling electric issues is dangerous, the company has to pay for employee's insurance and health benefits. This company by far, exceeded our hopes. We were selling a property, the furnace went out. Had another company come out and said that it could be fixed at a generous price of $5k or we could replace it for $7k. I called RBP for a second opinion and they went out the very next day to do the diagnostic, gave us a repair quote of less that $800 and never mentioned replacement. Part was ordered, in 2 days part came in and technician (Jonathan) went out at noon on same day as part came in and had the repair completed by 3:00pm. Our Air conditioner went out that this company put in 5 yrs an 2 weeks ago. I called for service and was told it would be a week and a half before the could come out and look at it. The salesman who came to our home was extremely knowledgeable, made great suggestions on how to better improve air flow through our house. I purchased a new 3.5 Ton Trane 16i furnace in June 2019. Paid $7950. Location of furnace: walkout basement -about 20 feet from outside unit. Female-African American (not sure if any of this matters but want to give future buyers a competitive edge) The good: the installers do a good job. They showed up on time and the system was installed neatly. When I noticed some issues after the job was complete, they attempted to fix it. They informed me that they would have to come back to break the system down to find the fault (loud whistling system). The system was working so it wasn't a big deal that the issue wasn't addressed on the install day. They were prompt about returning to address my concerns within 2 days. The bad: The sale. The salesman marketed the Trane brand with a recommendation of 2 systems. A single stage furnace with 14 seer compressor or a dual stage (heat only 80%) with a 16 seer compressor. I wanted a (up to)16 Seer system for the efficiency. After the system was installed I noticed the yellow energy efficiency tags on the heating unit stated 80%(as marketed) and on the outdoor compressor had a '14' efficiency rating. This is in direct conflict with what I thought I was getting. I called Robert B Payne Inc. for justification but all I got was an emailed certificate of the system that I bought and an explanation that the 14 presented on the yellow tag is the efficiency for the entire system; not just the compressor. Also, the system was 3 feet taller than my old unit. That would be ok if it wasn't located right below a window. They didn't pull permits because they said they don't pull for like-for-like units. However, a 3 foot delta model doesn't seem like-for-like to me. I'm concerned that the new unit violates Spotsylvania county code but I'll continue to research that situation. Advice: Ask for serial numbers of the products that you intend to buy and research their efficiency rating beforehand. Know the dimensions to ensure you're getting a unit that fits in the space as expected. I'm part to blame for not asking these questions but I didn't know what I didn't know. Salesmen love this; Robert B. Payne not excluded. An 8k lesson learned. 2 stars because I believe a creditable company ensures the customer understands what they're buying before they show up to install. I didn't get serial numbers for the products until they showed up on install day and began breaking down my old system. Good luck and I hope your experience is better. Additional note: I got my 1st electric bill a few days ago (23 July) and it's about $30 higher than what is typical for us this time of year. I called RBP when my AC stopped blowing cold air. They were quick to come out. Glen left telling me I was lacking a couple pounds of freon and my coil had a leak. He called the next morning to quote me approx $2000. A friend suggested I get a 2nd opinion because they did not seem right with a new home. Sure enough called CMR who had no idea who the previous service call was from. But CMR found no issue at all. Coil had no leak and I had sufficient freon. I am a widow in a retirement community. We needed a new full HVAC system. We scheduled an appointment for a Tuesday evening with Robbie. He came out and was pleasant. He didn't take any notes of the situation until he was leaving, like 1 minute. However, he did state he would get us the estimate the following week as he would be out of town till then. We waited that whole week wondering how they were going to get it to us as we never gave our email or any other way. The following week I called on a Thursday and the lady in the office took my email and said she would get back with me by end of business Friday. No call and no email on Friday. It is now Tuesday, 3 weeks after having Robbie out and still no estimate. Definitely would not recommend as they seem to do only emergencies. read more

I woke up this morning to a freezing house due to the furnace not working. It had been fine the night before. Of course it was the weekend when RBP is closed. Called the emergency number shortly afterwards the on-call technician called me back and was at my house within an hour. The problem was quickly found but required a part that has to be ordered. He showed me how to keep the furnace running until the worn out switch could be replaced. I've used RBP for many years and have always been very happy with their service. read more

Very dishonest company. My upper ac unit stopped blowing out cold air. I called and they came out promptly, this is the where the compliments end. Almost within minutes of being in my home, before even looking at the unit, the tech informed me it would probably have to be replaced ( it's 6 years old) He then went up into the attic for approximately 45 minutes. When he finally came down he stated that the coils were shot and leaking and if left in that condition, they would eventually leak through my ceiling. He also said that there was zero freon in the unit. He quoted $500 for the freon and said the coil replacement would be around $1700. At that price he recommended I just get a new unit. I paid the $89 service fee and asked them to leave. I called another company for a second opinion. It turns out the coils were fine, the ac was just fine, and the problem was a pipe that had been broken in more than one place which was causing the leak. Nice. The freon level was fine also. Call Service Cure, they are fair and honest. Stay far far away from this company! read more

However, when I contacted the company over the mark-up on the part replaced charged 214 dollars for a $20 capacitor I was told that they could come out and remove the capacitor and refund me the money for the part and service call. Robert B Payne (RBP) recently bought out the local HVAC company that installed my Trane system about 6 years ago...RBP support has been tremendous...their technicians are excellent to deal with...RBP really showed its devotion to customer service last June...we had just returned home from a week at the beach and found our air conditioning wouldn't work...and it was hot outside and inside...I had purchased a Silver Plan from RBP to perform a fall and spring system check and to give me priority service when necessary...RBP gave me excellent priority service...they sent techs by day after call...techs diagnosed problem and also found I had a service warranty with the local company that originally installed my system...RBP honored that warranty and did not charge me anything for the service which saved me over $500...RBP really went above and beyond...highly recommend them... read more

We were living with window AC units in the the summer and an old boiler for heat in the winter, so when it was time for a HVAC system we shopped around. We contacted several companies in the area. A couple never felt it was important to return our calls, one gave us an estimate over the phone, and one came and took measurements and we had to hound them to receive an estimate. When we received it, it was only a bottom - line cost without much detail or how they derived at that number. Robert B. Payne was the only company that was able to deliver and I would certainly recommend them to those who ask! There estimate was thorough, detailed, and included drawing. We decided to get an estimate for a whole new hvac system, since ours is getting older. That same afternoon, we had 3 estimates for different systems from a very knowledgeable, low pressure presentation from Robbie. We received other, higher estimates, but went with Payne. I had Payne install an air cond/gas furnace combo for my 3 level town home 18 years ago. They were very professional and competitively priced. Since then I have kept a service contract with their company. Just recently my furnace motor started making a weird grinding noise when cycling on. Their technician recommended a new motor. He told me since I had a gold service contract it would cost me nothing to install, which was how it was. I have been very satisfied with all of their technicians. 18 years of seeing their employees in my home twice a year has convinced me that they hire the best, and do, in my opinion, the best service around. One final thing, If you don't have a service contract with a qualified heat/air cond. company, you really should consider it. Having your system professionally cleaned and maintained twice a year is a smart idea. read more
