Honestly, I was on the fence about whether I should even write this review because I'm not sure I want more people to find her. Dr. McNair is great. She doesn't make me feel rushed, which is always a concern when seeing a doctor. I've gotten lucky there with medical providers. She's no-nonsense, funny, pragmatic, and approachable; I don't feel embarrassed or like I'm asking a stupid question. My primary care nurse had suggested Dr. McNair for years before I finally visited her, and the first time I did I was annoyed with myself for giving in to my fear (I don't relish visiting doctors) and not going to see her earlier. Here's hoping I need to see her for obstetrics care soon. My biggest complaint isn't about her or her care, but is how practically impossible it is to get an appointment with her. I mean that's a testament to how beloved a physician she is, which does inspire continued confidence. I had to try for four months before I finally was able to get in--and that's as a returning patient. That is incredibly nerve-wracking. Don't get confused by the elevators. You select your floor outside the elevator car, then hop in the elevator that it tells you to use. There's parking in the building, though it's pretty tricky because it's also a residential building (though those spaces are somewhat set apart), and the vast majority of the parking spaces say they're for small vehicles only. My car is a small SUV and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable parking it in one of them. There is parking elsewhere--this is an extensive medical campus, so there are other parking garages as well as the potential for street parking. The advantage of parking in the garage, though, is that they validate. I don't know how much street parking is so it's quite possibly less expensive, but it's Streeterville, so you never know. read more

I went to see the OB based on the strength of the reviews about her on the internet, including yelp. I went to see her for a consultation. As a black woman, having read all of the research on black women dying in labor and have adverse outcomes birth outcomes, I specifically wanted to explore working with a black doctor because I thought a black doctor might be more likely to see me as a whole human being and make fewer assumptions about me as a patient. Dr. McNair ended up not being a good fit for me, and my experience could not have been more different from what is described in all of the reviews on here. While Dr. McNair was not unkind in any way, she was extremely dismissive and brusque (almost defensive) in responding to any concerns that I raised or questions I had. At one point she said "it seems like you are looking for some type of reassurance [chuckle], anything can happen so I cannot give you that." She also told me that no doctor could provide any guarantee that I would not be injured while giving birth. I do not know if she said this as a general disclaimer, and I was not quite looking for this so I was really taken aback by the comment. At the moment, I cannot think of statement more deserving of a "DUH." If anything can happen why wouldn't I just stay at home and give birth instead of coming to a hospital? #besidethepoint What I WAS hoping to hear was something to the tune of "I understand that giving birth is scary for a lot of women, while I cannot provide any guarantees on outcomes, I have been doing this for a long time and am committed to providing the highest possible quality of care to all of my patients." Dr. McNair was nowhere near this narrative. Her responses and approach did not make me feel like she was a good listener or a good guide through this process. She did, however, provide one recommendation, for a really cool (sounding) midwifery group, that I really appreciated; that's the only reason why I am giving her two stars instead of one. Side note: it took 5 months to get an appointment for a simple consultation with this doctor. I'm not sure why people like working with her (based on my experience), but if you are interested in exploring working with her and/or might be pregnant soon I would recommend trying to make an appointment TODAY. read more

Dr McNair was my primary doctor through my pregnancy. She was wonderful! I can be a bit of an anxious person but Dr. McNair kept me grounded. She assured me not worry when everything was just fine but she had a calm yet serious way of letting me know when we should be concerned. I had high blood pressure towards the end of my pregnancy and Dr. McNair paid close attention and guided me through. I did have to be induced two weeks early due to the blood pressure but we felt so confident it was the best for us and our baby. If you are looking for a Dr. that is highly knowledgeable and able to communicate your options as well as possible scenarios to prepare you for anything during your pregnancy, choose her. She is simply THE BEST! The other doctors in her practice were also wonderful. I highly recommend this practice. read more

I can't recommend Dr. McNair enough. I was completely paranoid my entire pregnancy (with twins) and she calmed my nerves every appointment. Not only is she a mom, she also has twins so she totally gets it. Dr. McNair takes the time to explain as much detail as you'd like and in a way that doesn't make you feel silly or stupid at all...no question is off limits. I actually miss her now that I'm not seeing her every few weeks! I liked all of the doctors in the practice I met, but I definitely prefer Dr. McNair. read more

I cannot express enough how much I love this doctor - she is the type that I just don't want to leave her office cause she is so pleasant to be around. She is super qualified (went to John Hopkins), down to earth, knowledgeable. In general she just has good life advice. I went for my post partum 6 week visit and had no choice but to bring my son - which really stressed me out cause he was really crying when she walked in to see me. I first met Dr. McNair when it was the time in the pregnancy to see some of the other Dr's in the practice. This was with my 2nd son. I clicked with her immediately! She was so down to earth. Fast forward 2 years later, I was pregnant with my 3rd son and was having a hard time getting appointments with my primary OB(Dr. Starr) so I decided to see Dr. McNair. Let me say from that appt. on I made ALL possible appointments with her!! She makes you feel so comfortable! She is a mom herself so she gets it! She will sit with you and answer all your questions! I felt I could ask her anything! We loved her so much we scheduled my induction around her schedule so she could deliver my son! The delivery was great! She came in and talked to me and made the delivery and very memorable experience! I had recently met a mom at my son's tball practice who just had a baby and I asked her who her OB was...it was Dr. McNair and she raved about her as well! read more

Dr. McNair is fantastic. Our plan was for the midwives at Prentice to deliver our son, but in the end I had a 42 hour labour followed by a c-section. Dr. McNair was called in to help with my son's delivery. I had never met her before, but she was absolutely wonderful. She was calm, understanding, and made me feel confident about what was going on. She didn't make me feel rushed about any decisions. I found her to be a more reassuring presence than the doula we hired to attend the birth. She was also great post-partem. Love Dr. McNair and the Obstetrics group she works with. She's a great physician and has excellent credentials to back it up, but what I enjoy most is that she takes the time to listen and doesn't send you out until she's addressed all questions and concerns. I was with the NMPG practice for my pregnancy with a different primary OB (Dr McNair didn't have appointments initially), and the first time I saw Dr. McNair was in Labor and Delivery. She was FANTASTIC. I was 8 cm dilated by the time I went in to the hospital and the first thing she told me was that I can do this and I'm so close. She calmed me down and coached me through a medication-free birth. Couldn't have asked for better. Highly, highly, recommend! read more

Dr. McNair is a very exceptional doctor. I never feel resistant or make excuses not to go to the gynecologist with her. She, and her staff, always make me feel comfortable and her warm and charming personality just easily puts you at ease. Dr. McNair is an excellent physician. I have been seeing Dr. McNair throughout the course of my pregnancy. I am very picky, and interviewed several physicians before deciding on Dr. McNair. She is very down to earth and has a calming energy. She always takes the time to talk with me and make sure all of my questions are answered. Anytime I am panicked about something (ie, driving on a bumpy road), she reminds me that women have been having successful pregnancies for thousands of years in much less favorable conditions. I never feel belittled or rushed, and she is supportive of my plan to have a natural birth. I am so happy with Dr. McNair that I now make all of my appointments with her whenever possible. I am also late in writing this review. I met Dr. McNair in 2005 when I found out that I was pregnant. My plan was to have a midwife, but after my first ultrasound at NMPG having a midwife was out of the question, because we discovered I was having twins. After that I was introduced to Dr. McNair and 8 years later she is still my doctor. I call her my doctor because she has with me through some none obgyn health issues, and that's why I love her so much she cares about my health as a whole not just what she's titled to. As all of the staff that I met during my years of visits at NMPG are exceptional I wouldn't trade her for anything. read more
