Dr. Shashoua is an outstanding doctor. I have nothing but great things to say about him. However, steer clear of his assistant, Alyssa. She is extremely hostile, unprofessional, and dismissive of patient concerns. When I called the office today to explain that my chronic bladder pain has significantly worsened since my laparoscopy--especially after starting Myfembree (a medication I was highly reluctant to take but was told was necessary to prevent the return of endometriosis)--Alyssa answered the phone already sounding agitated and impatient. I explained that Myfembree has been severely exacerbating my symptoms, essentially putting my body in a temporary medical menopause at the age of 27. This abrupt drop in estrogen has left me bedridden in pain, ruining my relationship, calling off work weekly, and experiencing symptoms that are greatly interfering with my quality of life. After calmly explaining this and requesting a hormone panel to evaluate what I believe is a significant hormonal imbalance, she immediately dismissed my concerns. She told me there was "no way" I could be going into menopause at 27 and insisted that if I just stopped taking the medication, my hormones would "balance out" the very next day. When I pushed further and asked again for a hormone panel, she flat-out said she would never order hormone testing for me. I'm not sure where she received her education--if she has any at all in hormonal health--but her statement is not only inaccurate, it is medically irresponsible. Hormones do not simply "balance out" overnight. After stopping a medication like Myfembree, it can take 4 to 8 weeks just for hormone levels to begin recovering and often 3 to 6 months or longer to restore true hormonal balance--especially in patients with chronic inflammation, PCOS, or post-surgical stress. To deny testing while a patient is clearly experiencing severe and debilitating symptoms is deeply inappropriate and neglectful. Myfembree is known to suppress estrogen and can cause symptoms such as vaginal dryness, bladder pain, hot flashes, anxiety, insomnia, low libido, and mood changes. It also has the potential to negatively impact bone density and disrupt the HPA axis, making recovery more complex than simply stopping the medication. I called seeking medical support and a path forward. Instead, I was met with gaslighting, hostility, and a refusal to provide basic diagnostic care. This kind of treatment is unacceptable--patients deserve to be listened to, respected, and treated with compassion, especially when they are in pain. read more

If you are looking for an endometriosis specialist, then go see Dr. Shahoua. After countless years of doctors telling me to take birth control, or that my pain is normal, I stopped complaining and just dealt with the pain. I finally had enough and reached out to my cousin who is an ER doctor at UIC for some answers and she recommended Dr. Shahoua. My journey with him started in April of this year. I was in incredible pain and he listened then gave me suggestions. I did a lot of research beforehand and knew I wanted a hysterectomy. I also knew that just asking for a hysterectomy at 36 with no medical reason at this point was out of the ordinary. Dr. Shahoua was caring, open, zero push back on my wishes(of course he made sure I didn't want kids and the risks etc) but he LISTENED! He sent me for a T3 MRI, from there he was able to explain where my endo was. That it was attached to my bowels, abdominal wall, fallopian tubes and bladder. He started me on monthly shots of Lupron, which brings your estrogen down very low. A week after my first shot, my pain was gone. I was able to live life again. I researched a lot about Lupron, I was honestly very hesitant to start it. But I'm so glad I listened to him. I was on Lupron for 3 months so my body could calm down and he performed a hysterectomy on July 1st. He also sent me for a colonoscopy to make sure my endo was not inside my colon. I loved that he wanted to know everything before going into my surgery. After my surgery, which I knew was going to be complicated, the moment I woke up, I instantly felt better. Obviously I was in pain from surgery, but overall, I felt like I did 5 years ago. Dr. Shahoua literally gave me my life back. This has been the smoothest recovery, I feel like a million dollars, and I cannot recommend him more as a doctor. If you have been looking for an endo doctor, please make an appointment with him. The staff was wonderful and surgery went well, but recovery had complications. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Shashoua and Masonic Medical Center! I had a large fibroid (12cm) and my first obgyn told me that my only good option was a hysterectomy. Luckily I sought a second opinion. I literally searched Yelp for "fibroid" and found glowing reviews for Dr. S regarding myomectomy surgeries (that remove the fibroid only, so that you get to keep your uterus.) I had a robotic / laparoscopic myomectomy and I'm thrilled with the results. They were able to remove the entire fibroid through five small incisions, by essentially peeling the fibroid like an apple. How cool is that? The recovery was pretty rough at first and I was in the hospital for like two and a half days, but after a couple weeks I started to feel almost as good as new. At my follow-up appt they removed my incision glue/tape and I was shocked at how well healed my incisions are already. They only look like small cuts now. I'm just blown away at how great this all went. Highly recommend Dr. Shashoua. Honorable mentions: Dr. Juna, and Nurses Karishma, Kevin, Jada, Dhara, and more. After years of increasingly painful and difficult periods, and trying to manage with birth control, I was referred to talk to Dr. Shashoua and my life has improved for the better! I had a 5cm uterine fibroid, which was removed via robotic myomectomy in July. Dr. Shashoua listened to and empathized with my situation and provided me with surgical options. Throughout the process he and his team have been informative, caring and helpful. Four months later I feel like I'm "back" in my body. I'm stronger than ever and my periods and associated pain are exactly what they used to be. I've realized that uterine fibroids are incredibly common and that surgery can be an effective solution. I haven't written a yelp review in ages. I never thought I would be writing one about my doctor. I now know that it is important to do this as these reviews listed below, about this amazing human, gave me comfort and solidified my decision that I found the best doctor. I won't go into all the details about my conditions as they aren't the topic of this review. It's not about what illness you have but it's about how you are treated, how every person in Dr Shashoua office makes you feel. I will definitely miss seeing all their lovely faces regularly. After four months under Dr. Shashoua's care I had my surgery. Something that should have lasted 60 minutes, lasted over three hours because Dr. Shashoua did everything in his power to keep it minimally invasive. My uterus was 22 times it's normal size and one of my fibrosis tumors was larger then a grapefruit. Due to the size and location of one the tumors made this a difficult and tricky surgery. He could have easily taken the quick way out and c-sectioned me open but he cares about my recovery. Not all doctors would have done that. It is now three weeks after my procedure and I'm covering quickly as I only have four tiny incisions. It is truly amazing how all of this was done laparoscopically. So, to whomever is reading this, you have found your doctor. I promise you will be in the best hands possible. He is kind, caring and will do whatever it takes to make sure you are healthy. Five Stars (*****) for Dr. Shashoua! I am a current patient of Dr. Shashoua's, and I am sharing this review/experience, in hopes that it may be beneficial and help other women in some way, especially when facing important issues/decisions related to their personal health care. I am now 53 years old and I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy by Dr. Shashoua, on March 13, 2018. I am recovering beautifully, and I'm so, so *thankful* to have found this wonderful human being/doctor. I truly do believe, in my personal and professional opinion, he IS the finest, laparoscopic surgeon/gynecologist in North America! I was amazed, post-op, that I was only left with four....very, very small incisions in my lower abdomen/only 3 if you don't count the umbilicus entry, which will be concealed in time! The bigger factor here, and most importantly, is I truly believe this doctor very well, may have saved my life! Before ever seeing, Dr. S, I had a severe gyne/bleeding episode at home with my my uterine fibroids (multiple fibroids) that immediately led me to seek ER treatment at a local hospital. I was then admitted and received 4 units of blood. It was a very scary time for me and I realized, how serious of a situation it was. Once discharged, I immediately started researching my options to correct this permanently. While the situation was indeed serious, it was also equally critical and important to me, to have the BEST doctor I could possibly find, as I knew my case would be very complex for multiple gynecological reasons, etc. Also, I never had general anesthesia before, so there was that concern/fear as well. While there was indeed urgency, I also needed to find the "right fit" in a physician, so to speak, by finding the best doctor I could for "the job" and one that I was *totally* comfortable with on all levels here. His technical experience/skills/expertise as a surgeon,would be paramount for me, and I'm happy to report, he excelled on ALL expectations. My journey for finding the BEST, would happily end, when I met with Dr. Shashoua. Previous to that, I met with a local gynecologist, post-hospitalization for follow-up/per orders, and then I consulted with a specialist at a large university, before ever meeting with Dr. Shashoua, to ensure I was looking at all available options and what was best for my situation, while also making an informed decision. Yes, I do personally believe, it's extremely important to seek out and consult with professionals, that specialize in their respective fields and get professional, medical opinions when facing serious and important decisions/issues in life. After my first meeting/appointment with Dr. Shashoua, I *immediately* felt/knew, I had the best! He saw me on Thursday and my surgery was scheduled for the following Tuesday, as there just happened to be a cancellation in the schedule and I immediately took the spot, knowing the seriousness of my condition, as well. He took my complaints seriously and he took my life/health seriously! That means a lot on many levels, as a patient. I am happy to report, I am now typing this from my iPad while sitting in my recliner at home, next to my husband. It's been 4 days post-op and I have NO Pain! So I had fibroids for the past 12 years.My former Gynecologist told me one day I would need a hysterectomy. After one failed UFE I was was done with this Dr. of 28 years. This past January, I made an appointment with Dr. Shashoua. I had been researching him for about 7 years. He examined me and right away did an ultrasound and said you need to have a hysterectomy. So I trusted him and a few weeks later I went into Illinois Masonic hospital and had my hysterectomy. I was extremely nervous. I had never had major surgery. I was not afraid of the pain. But the anesthesia. The nurses at IL Masonic were great. Well I have to say I am 7 1/2 weeks post-op and feel better than ever. I have a hairline scare. I can hardly see it. Exemplary care - Exemplary physician - Exemplary surgeon - kind, caring doctor. I believe Dr. Shashoua just handed me an enormous part of life back that I thought I would never again have and for this I am extremely grateful. I am 59 years old. My OBGYN referred me to Dr Shashoua to discuss a possible options for what I needed to treat. I have had a long history of gynecological issues over the years, and I wanted this done and over with if it were necessary because I was so tired of dealing with it. My OBGYN said he was the best in the country and that she had complete faith in whatever he would tell me. I trusted her and saw rather quickly that I had made the right decision in doing so. We discussed the hysterectomy but he advised it was too soon and might possibly not ever need to be done. He did not want to me have an unnecessary surgery and he was clear about that. He did, however, identify a more immediate concern of mine - vulvodynia. I had read about this for women of my age and had just given up, thinking I would suffer through it, which runs counter to who I am and had made me very sad. He talked to me clearly and truthfully about his diagnosis and my condition, something no one else had done. His direct manner and approach appealed to me a great deal so that I felt I could trust him. He directed me to reference material I could read, pictures that showed what the procedure would look like, and explained what he would do, a procedure called a vestibulectomy (funny name which I still laugh about). He gave me the success rates, which he said were around 90% for this procedure. He did not immediately rush me into any decision about a surgery, on the contrary. He merely explained all my options in layman's terms so that I understood. We scheduled a follow-up for a month. During that time, I did my research. It was clear to me that the surgery was the right choice for me. My procedure was outpatient and I have to say, every single one of the staff and nurses at Advocate were exceptional, starting with the initial person who greeted me upon check-in. Someone was there to explain every step of the process for me and I never felt left alone to develop any anxiety about the impending surgery. I give a real shout out to all those prep nurses and anesthesiologists who got me through that procedure. Their sense of humor, combined with their clarity and expertise were important for me. Dr. Shashoua, and his assistant, Alissa, who was present for my exams, have shown nothing but continued professionalism and medical expertise, coupled with kindness and caring about me as a person, on a topic that remains very vulnerable to me and not many know about. I got nervous one week into my recovery at home, and Dr. Shashoua graciously agreed to see me for an unscheduled appointment the next day, staying later than I think his day had been scheduled to go and he put my mind at ease when I went in. I have just had my 3 month checkup and I am a success story for this procedure. I will shout it from the mountain tops. I was shocked at that first exam, post surgery. I am thrilled with the results. While I don't normally go around talking about such personal issues to people, I want all women who have the condition I had to know there is help available. No one need suffer in silence - and I will talk about that, when/if the situation arises. This is gonna be a long one, so bear with me. For months, I'd been having the worst periods imaginable -- cramps so bad they woke me up in the middle of the night, and if I was awake, I'd be hiding in the bathroom at work crying shoving Midol down my throat like candy. Even when I wasn't on my period, I just didn't feel "right." I felt like I was sick all the time and it was beginning to scare me. One night in January, I had to take a day off work because I was so weak and kept having heart palpitations. I saw my endocrinologist (I'm diabetic) and she said it had to do with my thyroid. After a month of taking sythroid, my period comes around again and I feel as if I'm constantly on the verge of having a heart attack. I called a nurse hotline that told me to go to the ER. I went to the ER (Northwestern) where they did an EKG that said I was having a heart attack (which they failed to tell me, and I didn't find out until weeks later), and they performed a vaginal exam, where I was told that everything was normal, they didn't know what was wrong, and to see a gynecologist. I googled "gynecologist" or whatever and Shashoua popped up. I saw his Yelp reviews and thought, "He seem legit." I went to his office and told him what was wrong. He examined me and didn't find anything out of the ordinary, but wanted to do a vaginal ultrasound to make sure, and found some polyps, which he said could cause painful periods, but not that painful. He suggested a laparoscopy just to make sure nothing else was wrong. The soonest I could schedule it would've been the week I was supposed to go out of town, but the choice to cancel the trip was easy because health is more important than four days in Los Angeles being possibly sick and miserable, plus it was the soonest date I could choose, and i wanted it done before my next period. After seeing more doctors in two weeks than I'd seen in the previous five years of my life, my surgery day came at the end of March, and the nurses there did everything to make sure I was comfortable. When I came to, I had really intense cramps (they put an IUD in me) but the nurse pumped me full of pain meds and I was A-okay (and hiiiiiiiiigh as hell). It turns out that I had incredibly mild endometriosis on my left side, but that incredibly mild endo caused: - adhesions that were effecting my colon - the crapload of pain I had during my periods - an ovarian cyst on my right ovary the size of a golfball (endo and cysts tend to go hand in hand, plus with my luck that thing would've burst on my plane ride to LA) - this is a guess, but it's also probably why I was having heart issues, since a recent study said that endo increases risk of heart attack in women by as much as 50% It's been almost six weeks since my surgery, and the difference is 100%. I feel normal for the first time in 6 months and it's thanks to Dr. Shashoua's intuition. He was the first doctor (and one of the first people in general) to really take what I was saying seriously, instead of brushing it off as a "bad period." I can function again like a normal person. read more

I don't need to broadcast my lady business here on Yelp, but let me just say that if you are looking for a great obstetrician or gynecologist he is a great choice, especially if you need a surgical procedure. He is a compassionate and caring doctor and an amazing surgeon. Amazing. His office also seems to have their act together and I am never stuck killing time in the nice lobby for very long. So, based on the stellar reviews on yelp, I thought I'd give him a shot. I've been having some pretty scary symptoms and I wanted to get a thorough examination. I made the trek all the way to Lincoln Park, and made my way to his office. I got there at 1:50, my appointment was at 2pm. I didn't get taken till 2:45. One star off right there. When I was taken, I told the nurse my complaints and she seemed concerned and let me know that I'd probably get an ultrasound, etc. I was very happy to hear this, because I felt my symptoms warranted this. Once he came in, he listened to my complaints and seemed slightly annoyed. I don't know if it's because I had a lot to say, or because he was just having a bad day. But it made me feel uneasy. I was directed to undress from the bottom down, where he did the typical "feel around." At this point, he told me to stand up, so I was standing without anything on but a shirt, as he was pressing down on my pelvis. So okay, fine, I understand you need me to be in a certain position to take a good look, but what happened next was just awful. The nurse and him left the room while I was still standing there without any clothes on....so the door opened for all to see. My room had a direct view of the waiting room/office area! When he came back, he sighed, and said, "So what do you want me to focus on?" Umm, everything would be nice. So I had to pick my two biggest complaints. No ultrasound was done, no blood work. Nothing to test the scary symptoms to see if it's really serious. I'm planning on seeing a different gyno. A female preferably. When will I learn not to use Yelp for medical recommendations? I feel like I went to a completely different place compared to the great things I read here. The staff is super friendly, so one star for that. read more

I'm in love!! Ladies, you all know how difficult it is to find a GREAT gynecologist, right? It's taken me 2 long years and a near trip back to L.A. just for a pap from my favorite doc. I did some research and narrowed it down to Dr. Shashoua. I filled out the online form and within 20 mins, I received a call from Dr. Shashoua. He asked me about my needs and told me that he'd have the office call me. Within minutes, I got a call and I set up an appointment. In the meantime, I was mailed a patient packet (that definitely made things easier). Today was my appointment and things went smoothly. I typically suffer from what my other doctors have referred to as "white coat anxiety".. my blood pressure is usually some ridiculous number and it makes folks want to admit to a hospital for fear that I may stroke out. I didn't have that issue today! The first time in lord knows how long. Everyone that I encountered was absolutely amazing. Their warm personalities definitely made being butt-assed naked with your legs up in stirrups for a stranger easier to deal with. read more

I am not a huge fan of yelp but I thought I should take the time to write a brief account of my experience with Dr. Shashoua and his team to help others. First off, I have never, ever even broken a bone, so the the thought of a myomectomy was not something I was looking forward to. So much so, I have been watching and waiting for about 10yrs. Recently, the last two yrs have been quite terrible with my fibroids increasing in bulk and causing issues from severe bloating to blocking digestive processes. It had come time to take the little monster out! The thought of allowing myself to lay in a hospital and to let someone willingly cut into me, made me nauseous, panicky, and hyper-ventilate! What if I die to what if I wake up during surgery?! All kinds of terrifying ideas and thoughts, to top it of, God forbid you read the scary stuff online!!!? Well I'm three weeks out and this was one of the BEST decisions (laparoscopic myomectomy) I have made. That being said, I give 100% credit to Dr. Shashoua and his caring team at his clinic as well as the lovely staff at Illinois Masonic Hospital, where I was treated at their state-of-the art care center. From day one, everyone has been kind and answered all my questions. I even had issues with my primary care physician, whose office was so unorganized through this process, and Dr. Shashoua's office took the lead role and did everything to make this one of the best experiences ever. So now I am monster free! I did the research and this is the best team for your fibroid issues in Chicago (if not the Midwest) and wanted other women out there to know, although everyone has unique experiences, if mine can be used as an indicator, I would suggest you make that phone call now and get it taken care of immediately. I have my life back and I wish I had done it sooner! I can't wait for the okay in 4 more wks to start training again for my first 5k in years. I was referred to Dr. Shashoua by an emergency care clinic, when they weren't able to do the procedure I needed. It was a shitty situation, but having a doctor who was kind, compassionate, and trusted me to make a decision about my own care really made a difference. Also, when I described something that was irrefutably gross, his response was, "That's kind of awesome." Weirdly comforting! I later went back for an exam and the level of care was similarly top notch. Also, to whom it may concern, Dr. Shashoua and staff are cool with the gays. read more

Dr. Shashoua is seriously amazing.  I had a few fibroids in and on top of my uterus that I had known about for years but It was starting to affect my health as it grew and grew into a nice grapefruit size. I have met with doctors that were referred to me by other doctors and I left each office just not feeling sure I wanted them to do the surgery.  I finally started my own research and kept seeing Dr. Shashoua's name all over the internet.  I read his reviews and called the office and the woman answering was so good at what she did that I felt really good about getting in  Dr. Shashoua looked at my medical records from Northwestern (who knew the 2 systems connect?), checked out the previous MRI I had received and asked me key questions about how I found out about my fibroids, do I want children, etc.  Fast forward to Feb 26, 2021.  I went in for the surgery that Friday around noon.  I went in by myself at Illinois Masonic, they checked me in right away, and in less than 5 minutes, I was in a gown laying in the bed, waiting for the open abdominal myomectomy. There are going to be about 20 people that come in and out of your room to check on you, do vitals, ask questions, introduce themselves, etc.  It was a bit overwhelming but I expected it. The anesthesiologist came in and said he was going to give me something to relax me which was roughly about 4pm.  The next thing I remember is a nurse or doctor waking me up and asking how I felt.  Everything happened so quickly. At 6pm, I was transferred to a hospital room to recover for the next 2 days.  Dr. came in on a Saturday to check up on me and told me I can go home if I felt well enough and I did feel OK after I realized I can stand and walk. The recovery was rough for the first few days at home but I had my boyfriend help for the first few days, and it's incredible how a body heals!  Dr and staff are great and serious about you and your recovery. I have had 3 visits after the surgery for a check up and I really feel like they care.  I highly recommend seeing Dr. Shashoua, thee BEST OF THE BEST! Don't hesitate, just meet with him. read more

When I first went to Dr. Shashoua, I was really excited. I had read all of these reviews and thought I was going to be in good hands. After my first appointment, he prescribed me a medicine that I thought would help, and it didn't. My particular condition takes months of patience and treatment, so I definitely had realistic expectations. After a few appointments, I started to have serious doubts about Dr. Shashoua. I researched my condition extensively, and even bought a book by a doctor in New York who is an expert in the field. All of the various treatments that Dr. Shashoua was recommending for me, actually went against generally accepted opinions and research. I was so, so frustrated, but I stuck with Dr. Shashoua to try and give him the benefit of the doubt. After only trying one form of treatment, Dr. Shashoua told me the next step would be surgery. For my condition, there are a handful of treatments that can be tried first (his treatment for me was not among any of the recommended routes, btw). I had read that the particular surgery I would receive was only rarely recommended as a last resort for extreme cases, and could potentially make the symptoms worse. After that appointment, I decided that I could no longer trust him with my health and care. I had a bad feeling about everything he was recommending, and I turned out to be correct. I saw three separate doctors who specialize in my condition after him in order to get a good solid opinion, and ALL of them collectively agreed that Dr. Shashoua's steroid cream treatments were absolutely terrible, that they would actually make the symptoms worsen. This completely validated what I was suspecting based on the research I had done. I think Dr. Shashoua gets a lot of credit because he is a great surgeon and can really "fix" people with fibroids, etc, but he is just that: a surgeon. He is hasty with women's health and he doesn't listen. He is narrow minded and doesn't look at the bigger picture. He is a careless doctor who I regret ever seeing for my situation. He cares more about his ego than about considering the BEST option to help women with their problems, and refuses to acknowledge that he may be uninformed in a particular situation. I will never step foot in Dr. Shashoua's office again, and would warn anyone with my condition against seeing him. read more

Dr Shashoua performed a partial vestibulectomy three months ago at Illinois Masonic. The recovery was 3 weeks of agony (ten days of bleeding) and sitz baths with Epsom salt twice a day for 2 weeks to help with the discomfort post surgery. Dr Shashoua performed another surgery on me a year prior and there is no other doctor that I would have trusted to perform this procedure. My constant pain is gone and I'm able to insert vaginal hormones more easily. He cares about his patients, has a great bedside manor and listens to your concerns. read more

After nearly 25 years of struggling with endometriosis, I am virtually pain free now thanks to a laparoscopic hysterectomy with Dr. Shashoua. Seven years ago, I had a laparoscopic procedure with a different surgeon to remove endometriosis adhesions. When I began having a recurrence of symptoms in 2014, my former surgeon became defensive and insisted it was all in my head. Frustrated at the turn in his bedside manner, I researched other gynecologists in the Chicago area who specialize in endo treatment and found Dr. Shashoua. At my first appointment, he reviewed my treatment history and--most importantly--believed me when I described the pain I was living with. We went over the various treatment options, and he gently recommended a hysterectomy. I was 40 at the time and finished building my family through adoption, so I wasn't worried about closing the door to pregnancy. Still, my initial reaction was, "But I'm so young! A hysterectomy seems like such an extreme thing to do!" He told me that the average age of his hysterectomy patients is 40 and that he has never had a patient come back with regret. Still, I just wasn't ready to do it and told him I'd like to think about it for a few weeks. After researching other women's outcomes, I ultimately decided to schedule a robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy with Dr. Shashoua at Illinois Masonic. The procedure itself was about three hours long, and he removed all of my adhesions, as well as my uterus. I was able to keep my ovaries, fortunately. The hospital kept me overnight for observation, but I was home the next day. As a long-time Northwestern Memorial patient, I was nervous about the level of care I would receive at Illinois Masonic, but it was excellent. There were some problems getting the IV into me before the surgery, since I was dehydrated, but the team handled it calmly and professionally. The nurses in recovery were warm and caring and attended to my pain expertly. And the facility itself was just as nice as Northwestern. A year and a half later, I can say that Dr. Shashoua was right--I have NO regrets. In fact, I wish I had done it sooner. My pain level has gone from regular 10s to occasional 3s, and only when I'm ovulating. I used to go through a 100 count bottle of Advil every month; now, I only take it maybe once a month, if that. My bowel system is functioning better, my body feels more coordinated, and my overall quality of life has improved substantially. My "scars" look like nothing--just a couple of tiny, barely visible 1/4 inch tic marks on either side of my abdomen. Time may tell if I have a return of symptoms; and if so, I will definitely be back to update my review. But for now, I feel wonderful and am so grateful to Dr. Shashoua for giving me my life back. read more

I've never gotten on YELP to review doctors, but now that I've had a year of exhausting, horrible and near-death experiences I'm compelled to share some of my impressions. My first stop is to write a rave review for Doctor Shashoua. I have VWD, a blood coagulation disease, along with a platelet disorder and have had a lot of issues the last year and a half. So much so that other doctors didn't feel comfortable performing the surgery I needed, which I commend them for, I'd rather have someone who felt comfortable and knowledgeable doing the deed. I'd been to several surgeons on my hunt, but Shashoua was so clear and confident in what needed to be done that he became my number one choice immediately upon meeting him. And, I couldn't have been happier. My issue quickly became an emergency situation shortly after our first visit and when I called to ask him what I should do he had me come in immediately. I was admitted to the hospital and he made time for my surgery in just over a day. I've had several small surgeries in the past, so I'm no stranger to the process, but this was the biggest surgery I'd ever been through. And, despite the magnitude of this one it went by without a hitch. I'm eight weeks out and the scars are already barely noticeable. He went in through the belly button with only 4 very small incisions on the belly. The nurses and staff were very responsive and extremely knowledgeable. It was by far the BEST hospital experience I've ever had. The staff in his office is also extremely nice and responsive, a trait I dare say few offices in this city have. read more

For the past 10 years, I dealt with uterine fibroids. I've had several procedures (every 1.5 to 2 years) to remove them but they kept growing back. Early this year, I was referred to Dr. Shashoua and after discussing my options, I decided to have a laparoscopic assisted hysterectomy to finally be done with the fibroids. My big concern was recovery time as I was training for an IRONMAN triathlon and couldn't take much time off training. Dr. Shashoua did the procedure with micro incisions and I recovered super fast! I was able to slowly resume my training after only 2 weeks. My whole experience was as good as it can get. Dr. Shashoua is absolutely amazing and highly recommended. read more

Dr. Shashoua changed my life. I had a weird fibroid in a terrible location and exhausted my second and third opinions about the best way to move forward. I was in incredible pain. Dr. Shashoua was my gyno, but he was also the first to identify a problem with herniated disks, and he prompted a much needed MRI - along with a very needed hysterectomy. I had hoped for less, but he made a much better call and I defer to his expertise. I had not been on any prescriptions for my pain, which lasted for more than a year. Narcotics make me sick and the last thing I wanted to deal with was a dependency issue. Dr. Shashoua respected my choice and focused on identifying the problem instead of numbing it. He made immediate corrections instead of kicking the can down the road. Dr. Shashoua is a man of few words and he makes sure to be clear and precise when offering his best opinion. His demeanor is direct and focused. I appreciate his candor and clarity. I can never experience the milestones he crossed to become such an adept surgeon and I'm ever grateful for abilities. He is an artist and a healer, and the marks his work left on my body are so small. They all healed quite well. Post hysterectomy: I'm tremendously surprised at how little pain I am in, and I haven't needed much relief beyond prescription strength Ibuprofen. Every bit of good advice I have received from Dr. Shashoua, and nurses, has proven to be correct. I'm on the mend, so mindful of the great care I received. My surgery took place at Illinois Masonic - the new building. Right before Christmas! Everyone there took great care of me, above and beyond my expectations. I don't make it a habit to be sick or in need of an operation, and I don't have much to compare this experience against, but IL Masonic provided the best care I have ever received in my lifetime. Pre-op, recovery, in the hospital room - everyone was so compassionate and knowledgeable. I am so impressed. Thank you Diana and Christian, the nurses who cared for me and explained everything. Highly recommend: 5 star diagnosis, procedure, and treatment This is long, hopefully you feel it was worth it. December 2012, I had my first endometriosis surgery. I was peeing blood for about 12 months before I went to my GP. After getting referred to a Urologist and getting a cysto (v painful) it was discovered there was a "mass" in my bladder. Surgery was a couple weeks later and the "mass" was pathologized (my word) and diagnosed as endometriosis. Several questions later and insertion of Mirena, I was on my way. 2015 Mirena removed for baby making purposes. August 2017, still no baby (1 miscarriage), but started peeing blood again. Not just peeing blood. You know the sensation you get when you have to pee? Mine went from "I have to pee" to "it's an emergency" to "I just peed on myself, again" in about 90 seconds. Since I'd been through this before, I was pretty confident of the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. This time, however, I had new insurance and had to go to a different GP and Specialist. What was initially crushing news, ended up putting me on a path to a much better diagnosis and treatment. After meeting my new GP and getting a referral, I made an appointment with Dr. Shashoua. (Sounds like Joshua) Who's ever heard of a Urogynecologist? No one. Well, turns out this is exactly what I needed. Took a few weeks to get an appointment, but when I got into Dr. Shash's exam room, he did an internal ultrasound, about 11 second later he saw the endometriosis and about 12 fibroids. Since I was already aware of the endo and fibroids, it was more of a conversation about solutions. 1. Hysterectomy 2. Traditional surgery 3. DaVinci robotic surgery Since I'm still trying to conceive, a hysterectomy was the LAST option. Gotta hold on the uterus... I could get traditional surgery where they go in by hand and remove the endo and fibroids, but have a very large scar and with had removal there is more room for error. Or I could get the DaVinci surgery, small incisions , more precise, and less downtime. Dr. Shash was thorough in all options and didn't push me in any direction. This really is my decision and he wanted me to make the right choice for me. Even when I asked, "what do you think I should do?" he was very direct in making sure I followed my own heart. Since I'm a woman that likes the innovative, and after I did a TON of research on the World Wide Web and YouTube videos, it was settled, I'd opt for DaVinci. Besides, it's named after on the of the most famous artists in the world. About 6 weeks later was surgery. In all things that happen in my life, there is the way things should go, then there's the way it went in my case. All in all, things were great. At all times I felt my questions were answered and I was a partner in my own care. The surgery took longer than expected and I was in the hospital longer than expected ( I got a private room), I attribute it all to Dr. Shash's level of specificity and care. It was only until he felt I could handle the pain, meds, and catheter was I allowed to leave. THANK GOODNESS. I had 18 fibroids removed and a good section of my bladder cut then sutured to remove the endo. And I had to go home with a catheter. Whatever you do in life, try to avoid ever having to go home with a catheter. There is nothing you can do that is sexy or intimate with a catheter. Dr. Shash was great, he even gave me his mobile. He text me first... (I think this is the first man to ever text me first.) One week later the catheter was removed and tape started coming off the incisions. 5 in all, about 1-1.5 inches each. I had a pain for about 10 days after surgery and was on oral narcotic pain meds. But again, I had a more complicated surgery due to the endo and number of fibroids. My ongoing treatment involves a 4 month treatment of Lupron. Basically a menopause shot. This is to kill off any microscopic endo that could be lurking. Is this mandatory, probably not. Dr. Shash recommends it, so far he's only steered me in the right direction, I agreed. Monday was my last Lupron shot. In several weeks, the hormones will turn back on just in time for Lollapalooza. Hot flashes are real and I empathize with all women having them. You will take off your shirt and think nothing of it. Trust me, I've been there too. BUT, I'll take hot flashes over a catheter everyday!!! Thanks Dr. Shash!!! read more

I had a very difficult problem to diagnosis that took almost a year and a half to do so. I started to realize that some specialists only hear what they want to hear and dump you when they don't get their desired diagnosis. Dr Shashoua tried multiple treatments and approaches with me and didn't give up on me the first time his initial diagnosis wasn't correct. He has a laid back demeanor and is often sarcastic, but I appreciate that. What matters is results and he gets those too. When about 9 other specialists had given up on me (even offered me a psyche eval) he didn't and I'm now on the road to recovery. Office staff is great and I have only had to wait any length of time to get in once. read more

Let me start with Dr Shashoua is an amazing Doctor! I have been his patient since 2006. Just recently during a routine exam, a sizable uterine fibroid was discovered. He immediately confirmed the diagnosis during my appt and discussed with me what are my options. I agreed with him that a laparoscopic option would be ideal. His great nurse Luz Tostado helped me with the surgery schedule date. My surgery was scheduled 3/21. Week prior to my surgery, another nurse Nicole called me to prepare me for my upcoming surgery and answered all my questions I had. This was my first time to have surgery, so I was a bit nervous. But in all honestly, Dr Shashoua and his staff go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. Always available to answer any questions you have. Day of surgery at the Illinois Advocate Masonic, the nurses and doctors attended to me were all extraordinary. Each one of them introduced themselves (my apologies for not naming each one of them, blaming it on pain meds during that time) explained to me exactly what they were performing and why they were doing it. I was extremely impressed by their level of support and attention to details. Dr Shashoua made sure to explain the procedure details pre-op and all the nurses promised they will make sure I'm comfortable once it's was completed. He performed a Da Vinci Myomectomy. Post Op, the nurses made sure I was comfortable from pillow positions to pain level adjustments. I could not thank them enough for how much they made me feel. I stayed one night and was cleared next day by Dr Shashoua after checking on me. I just had my 2weeks post op check up. All looks good, my incisions (5 total) are super tiny and you can barely see them. I'm feeling better again, my lower abdominal swelling has reduced a lot. I'm forever grateful for all what Dr Shashoua and his nurses did for me during this time. I'm always referring family and friends to him.
