I went to Women's Aid Center for a medication abortion and received what I believe was the very best in care and attention. I will never recommend any other clinic.
At 22 years old and a week before I graduated college, I found out I was pregnant. I decided that the medication abortion option was best for me. However, I calculated that I was at least 7 weeks along and medication abortions have a time limit--they can't be performed past 9 or 10 weeks. It was a Thursday night when I found I was pregnant, I spent all that night and ALL of Friday DESPERATELY trying to make an appointment with Planned Parenthood. I called, I emailed, I showed up at one of their locations, but I couldn't seem to get ANYONE to talk to me, help me, or help get me an appointment. The only thing they did was hand me brochures about how to tell my parents. I'm 22, not 16. I didn't need a brochure, I needed HELP.
Friday night I looked for different clinics and found Women's Aid Center. They have an instant messaging option and an email option on their website. It was 9pm Friday night, so I emailed thinking I wouldn't get a response until Monday. But not even an hour later, Women's Aid Center emailed me back and gave me an appointment for Saturday morning. I repeat: They contacted me IMMEDIATELY and helped me!!!!! I couldn't believe that they gave me an appointment for the very next day! The immediate and kind response from Women's Aid Center felt like a miracle for a scared young woman with a time limit.
Walking into Women's Aid Center is not scary, it's well hidden inside a large building with plenty of free lot parking. The clinic itself is warm, cozy, and inviting. The people who work there are professional, kind, knowledgable, understanding, and nothing short of wonderful. My boyfriend and I couldn't tell family or friends that I was pregnant and we were both terrified, but the ladies at Women's Aid Center treated us with such kindness, that we felt like we were among family.
I didn't expect the doctor to be a man and I thought I would be put off, but I was not. He was amazingly skilled and made my boyfriend and myself feel at ease. Seeing as how I'd never been to a gynecologist and i've never been pregnant before, he made me feel as comfortable as I could have been.
Medication abortions require two different medications, I took the first one in the office with the doctor (Saturday), and I took the other pill at home on Monday. Medication abortions can be very painful, and mine indeed was, but Women's Aid Clinic was only a phone call away, and I promise that they will answer when you call with any questions or concerns.
I ended up being 8.5 weeks pregnant. Planned parenthood didn't even get back to me on making an appointment until a week after I had had my medication abortion through Women's Aid Clinic. At that point I would have been 9.5 weeks pregnant and it would have been too late to have a medication abortion through planned parenthood.
Women's Aid Clinic was there for me in the most desperate time of my life. They were immediately responsive and immediately got me in for an appointment. They counseled me on my options, were kind, understanding, free of judgment, and endlessly knowledgable. At my follow-up appointment (which was a free checkup to make sure the medication abortion went properly) I was counseled and taught about all my options for birth control and the wonderful ladies at Women's Aid Center gave me an ENTIRE YEAR of birth control for FREE.
I will never, ever, recommend any other clinic for women in the Chicago-area. The outstanding treatment and care that I received is without parallel. read more
