Roaring mouse is unbelievable. Last week I was on a hunt for a new bike and I knew exactly which one I wanted, but had some questions about the female specific size. I called every Specialized dealer within the Bay Area, and every single one was incredibly unhelpful and didn't bother to help me look up the answers... until I found Roaring Mouse. Brianna is a pro-triathlete, and really knows her stuff! Chris (the owner) put me on the phone with her almost immediately (but after taking the time to look up Specialized sizing) and Brianna scheduled an appointment for me the next day. She spent over 2 hours with me, helping me get sized and testing out new bikes. She didn't try to up-sell me, which I really appreciated. I walked out of there buying my dream bike, and she said it would be ready for me on Tuesday (they rushed it so I can take it for the holiday weekend.) I just called in (it's Tuesday) and it's ready for me now! Roaring mouse has the best service of any bike store, and I love that they have females who can explain and help out with bikes. Read good reviews on Yelp, went to the shop, reviews hold true. Nice staff, non-intimidating, and knowledgeable. Friend ask the difference between all the lube and the guy gave a nice explanation about each one. He even showed my friend how to lube the chain properly. One thing you should know beforehand is that they don't stock any old 70's road bike stuff. I went there with my beatup Centurion and they didnt have any parts there, though they did recommend me to check out Bike Kitchen on Mission. read more

Something has changed here over the past 10 months or so...service not as good as before, people are ill tempered and short, and they've done some shoddy work on one of my bikes. Perhaps I'm expecting too much after having bought a $3000 frame and $500 more in components to build it. They did a sloppy job of installing a carbon fork and headset, but did at least offer to replace the fork at no charge (I declined). I recently saw their manager down at Sports Basement riding a new, candy-cane looking red and white cruiser bike. Evidently he was there to purchase some special chainring screws. Why couldn't he order those himself? Given that I've moved farther south in town and they never seem to have what I need in stock to get back on the road, I probably won't be going here much anymore. 8/1/2014 EDIT: No disputes or problems w/ the $3K Ti Litespeed CX frame, Chris King NoThread headset, TRP CX-9 mini V-brakes, gloves, Kryptonite Evo-mini lock, tire gauge, Thomson Elite handlebar stem, etc., etc. After 28 years I don't expect much from bike shops, however do take offense when work is not done properly or poorly, especially when I can do it better myself! As an aside--Canondale (or any manufacturer for that matter) does not manufacture their own bicycle hardware--they purchase it from other suppliers. The point was, why couldn't an experienced shop like Roaring Mouse determine this and get the screws directly themselves, obviously more efficient than going through Sports Basement, where Rocky is also employed (or was). read more

I had walked in here a few months ago as it's the closest bike shop to me. Had been pondering getting a bike for my commute thinking I wouldn't be changing offices. Well that changed so I didn't get a bicycle. Recently I won a Dahon on ebay because I am going to commute via bicycle. I was filling up my rear tire with the pump I had and it burst. Ooops over pumped. So I brought my bike in to see how to easily replace the tube of a tire and make sure I put the damn thing together properly. I didn't get the name of the dude that helped me but he was nice and explained everything to me then showed me what to do. Even fixed my front wheel lock as I had put it on wrong. Definitely going to go here for spare tubes and any other things I need for the bike in the future. It also does help that it's a block from my flat. read more

These guys are so helpful and amazing! I'm really short, so it's hard to find a bike that fits. I went and said, "I don't know anything about bikes." The owner, Chris, had a spectacular accent :) and then he asked me questions - if I cared what kind of bike, how tall I was, my price range. Then he gave me a list of used bike shops/phone numbers/addresses to go to (because my price range was super low, like $200), and told me exactly what to ask them when I called. Then he wrote down and told me what to look for in a craigslist bike, and said if I got one and brought it back to him, he'd give it a check-over for free. Then he told me the name and brand and price of the bike that he thought I'd want if I bought one new, and that if that's what I wanted, he'd get it for me. So basically, he gave me a 15 minute crash course in bicycles, and sent me to the competition because they could help me better, and an hour later thanks to everything he said, I now have a bike, and I'm really happy!! Great bike shop with great customer service. The guys really go the extra mile to help make sure you're taken care of. I bought a touring/commuter from them a few years ago. The wheels made by Salsa were crappy and ended up getting cracks near the nipples. They replaced the rim and rebuilt the wheel with a quick turnaround. The same happened to the rebuilt wheel and they upgraded both wheels with a better product free of charge. This is just one example of the good customer service. Another plus...they're not jerks! Great people!!! Whether you are throwing big bucks for a new rig or in there just to buy a tube for your beater, they provide great customer service. I walked in with a question that they weren't quite sure of the answer. The pretty service mechanic immediately got on the phone and called the manufacturer to check the compatibility on a $10 item. This is my "go to" bike shop in the city. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Sean recently fixed my chain, and on my request, showed me what was wrong and how to fix it. He spent the time to ensure that it was done well and spiffed up the bike a bit with oil, air in the tires, etc. He went above and beyond to even help me get a new attachment for my back light, which was great. And everything only cost me ten beans! You can't go wrong with that. I will definitely go back. read more

I lived in SF for 10 years but recently moved away and am back visiting for a week. I am car-less and somehow I totally messed up my road bike during packing and my attempt at reassembly (shouldn't be so hard right?) Anyway, I really needed to get it looked over because it was unrideable and I want to do some riding while in town plus I have some planned events for the weekend. Also it is currently my main mode of transportation. Of course the weather is gorgeous this week and I was not the only one trying to get my bike fixed up today, so most shops I contacted couldn't see me for at least a couple days if at all. (Although, really, SF is lucky to have so many nice bike shop folks.) Chris at Roaring Mouse said they could take a look and at least get it rideable for me even though their bike service was booked solid this week. Long story short, they went WAY out of their way (thanks Rocky & the rest of the gang) to get me going again and I was incredibly grateful! The service was fantastic and my bike is running great again. Prices were totally reasonable. I am very picky about who I'm comfortable with adjusting my bike and I would definitely recommend this shop. They checked it carefully to make sure everything was adjusted properly and tight and I definitely hadn't tightened it all perfectly myself. It's located near Crissy Field on the way to the Warming Hut just past House of Air. Look for the bikes in the window! They also have a nice selection of bike accessories, tools, clothing etc., and of course, bikes. I picked up some CO2 since I always have to ditch mine whenever I fly. (Word to the wise...don't forget to take your CO2 cartridges out of your carry-on bags!) I would have picked up a pedal wrench if I weren't already hauling a 20lb bag of stuff. read more

I biked to San Francisco from Redwood City (~35 miles) and noticed my bike kept changing gears on me while under power (going up hill, etc). I brought it by another bike shop in The City that I am familiar with to have it checked out. They examined my bike and informed me my chain was worn out and, in turn it had "sharktoothed" or worn out my cassette and chain rings. Bad news, they would all need to be replaced, worse news they were too busy to do it for me today. Well as I had rode to San Francisco my bike was my way back so I was feeling a bit uneasy. I checked Yelp on my phone for another well rated shop near my location and found Roaring Mouse Cycles was just down the road a bit. I got there a few minutes before they opened and was concerned since there were already a few people waiting for it to open. Once the door opened the 3 or 4 people ahead of me went right to the shop desk. It didn't look good. The bike mechanic Jeff who works there came out and asked me what I was looking to get done to my bike. I explained the situation to him and he confirmed my chain and cassette were worn out but my chain rings looked fine and should be good through two more cassettes before they would need to be replaced. The workshop was full so he put my bike on a bike stand on the retail space floor. In less than 15 minutes he had my cassette changed out, a new (upgraded) chain in place and checked to make sure my bike shifted smoothly through the gears. With my S.F. Bike Coalition discount I was out the door for less than $100. I spent the rest of the day biking around the hills of S.F. and across the Bridge in the Marin Headlands without a single gear slip or issue. While my bike was getting worked on I took the opportunity to check out their store. They carry a lot of quality bikes and gear. It looks like they also have a well equipped bike fitting station. I highly recommend checking these guys out if you're in the area. read more

I've been a customer at the Mouse for a few years...live nearby. They have always given good advice and great service. I've had them build me me a few wheels...or more...good wheels and that's a plus. When I stopped by their booth at Sea Otter Chris even loaned me some sunscreen! It's never sunny at Sea Otter!! Because I walked in, wasn't going to buy anything, made it known that I was going to ask some questions since I'm a newbie and don't know anything about bikes and yet Chris (I assume that's him since the website suggests he's the Brit guy) had the GALL to answer them, including why I shouldn't bother getting my bike tuned up since it's too big for me and how I should prolly go to some non-profit places to find a decent second-hand bike since I'm not ready to drop some serious dough. I dared to learn about the ebike offerings for a gift. There is a lot to learn. I talked with several bike shops. Each had different answers to the same questions. Rocky at Roaring Mouse was accurate, helpful, low key (not once did I feel like I was being "Sold") and someone I want to buy from....I will be back to Roaring Mouse as a local...and for tourists, this is an awesome place to stop for bike gear or just air for your tires prior to heading out for a day in San Francisco. While riding our bikes to the Golden Gate Bridge, my boyfriends pedal came off (bike not purchased here). Luckily, this store was about two minutes away... We stopped in and they saw that the bike pedals were put on wrong and now stripped. They came to the rescue and fixed it within 15 minutes at no charge! They're so awesome!!! Because of them we were able to continue on or ride. We purchased a bike lock, which definitely looked more heavy duty than the one we had. Excellent customer service from these guys!! Thanks!! This tiny shop is staffed by very knowledgable and friendly folks. They are passionate about biking and tell it to you straight without a sales pitch. Also, if you are looking for high end bikes for purchase you can demo ride for $50/day (which you get back if you end up purchasing a bike from them). This is hands down the best bike shop in SF. There are a lot of good shops in SF, but this one really takes the cake. They follow their slogan to the letter - "Expert service without the attitude." The staff at this place are great. They let you know what needs to get done in a helpful and friendly manner and won't make you feel like an idiot if you don't know something (like a lot of places can do). All the mechanics are knowledgeable and explain things in detail before proceeding with any repairs to your bike. Chris the owner knows how to take a small retail space and fill it with everything you need in a shop. Although the place is small, it has a large selection of everything you'll need in a shop. I can't say enough good things about the shop and the crew. Despite there being a major shortage of higher end road bikes at the moment they had one in my size. The shortages caused several hiccups along the way of getting the bike configured, non of which were the fault of these guys, but Chris handled the entire process really well and made sure that I felt fully satisfied with everything. Chris, Charley and the rest of the staff at Roaring Mouse are top-notch. we have not bought a bike there, but we have spent several hundred dollars decking out our bikes and getting some old ones in selling condition and RM staff has been a great help. matt's experience: most recently, i took it upon myself to rebuild an old rear tubular rim that a coworker gave me. i ordered the hub (Surly fix/fix) through Charley and he helped me out with spokes (we figured out the length and he even prepped them for me) and gave me some needed advice and confidence. i brought it in once i had it built and he checked it over for me, making sure it was dished, true and pre-stressed. he also advised me on how to apply the glue and get the tires on. everything came out great and i'm up and running on tubulars now! support your LBS and yourself: shop at Roaring Mouse read more

Allow me to preface my five-star review with the fact that I'm the epitome of a novice rider. The extent of my riding skills were booze cruises on the San Diego boardwalk four years ago. Until I bought a city bike on Craigslist not too long ago. Which is why I sought the help of Roaring Mouse. A simple once-over, tune and adjust to make sure the bike wasn't going to explode beneath me. So, I phone Roaring Mouse to make an appt for a tune and adjust. I spoke to a lady when making the appt, but said that I'm new to riding and I've just scored a bike on CL. She suggested to bring it in early to see if they needed to order any parts. Brought it in and chatted with Sean (?) He was super nice, understood that I was new to riding and explained everything very simply. Not in a condescending way, but in a very helpful, understanding way. A few days later I pick my bike up and they explained what they did, why they needed to order a part (which was $5, so no biggie) and that everything looked good. Five minutes later I was out the door. You won't find any chips on these guys' shoulders here. They were super helpful, affordable and couldn't care less if I was a fixie-riding hipster, a daily commuter or a brand-newbie. read more

these guys have a lot of 5 stars for good reason. They are a damn good shop. I have a bit of a bike fetish, but still really dont know what the hell I am talking about. They do and give you the straight poop. I have even found they listen patiently to any horsesh*t their customers -me- have to say. I've bought a couple bikes through them, one a full custom build. Their advice on the bike, where to spend and where to trim was spot on. Chris, the owner is a stand up dude and I've found the crew to follow suit. They value their regulars. patient, knowledgeable, accommodating. Great selection of solid, researched bikes & hand selected gear. So I finally settled on a bike after getting my fall bonus and getting all read up on bike knowledge. It came down two bikes at two shops, and at the end of the day, I bought a new Cannondale Synapse from Roaring Mouse. They were patient with me as I must've come in asking questions and soliciting advice for a couple months and taken the bike out for test rides on three occasions. Chris was nothing but honest and even offered up a computerized comparison to the other bike I was looking at. BEWARE - This is no longer a local, independent bike store - it was acquired by Specialized - Context - This used to be one of my go to bike stores- and when i was ready for my next high-end mtb (PIVOT) i ordered it with roaring mouse - they were holding a 50% downpayment for over a year - while i was waiting communication was VERY sparse - and delivery time of my bike kept getting pushed out - i can appreciate the challenges with bikes in high demand and supply chain issues etc - but something was off - since i saw people on-line getting the bike with other shops with shorter wait times - and one of my friends got a similarly spec'ed bike from another shop right off the floor - eventually they told me they no longer could get the bike because they were acquired - and i had to call PIVOT to see if they would transfer my order to another shop - overall this was very underwhelming and poorly handled - they could have shown some goodwill with comped goods, or a discount on the wheel-set i bought - but it was pretty much "sorry - tough luck" - read more

I think most of the other reviews say it, but you just can't beat this place for honesty, knowledge, and a passion to do right by the customer. Every time I have gone, I have been hooked up in one way or another: 1) A cheap set of pedals from an employee who didn't even pocket the money - he put it in the tip/beer jar for them all to share (and they were his own pedals). 2) Advice on how to slightly bend some warped brake rotors so I wouldn't have to buy new ones (when it would have been from them). 3) A *free* Avid Torx wrench to remove my brake rotors (when they could have sold me some tool). 4) Tons of free advice. You will not be disappointed by these guys - you really won't. read more

I've trained. I've researched. I've gone on test rides. I've poured over books, forums, magazines. I am finally ready to buy a bike of my very own. I wish I could buy it from Roaring Mouse. This was the first shop I went to, and after visiting at least 10 others, I can confidently say it was the best experience I have had. Not only were these guys incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, they were honest. I have no doubts that they stand behind every product they sell. I would confidently purchase almost any product they recommend, because I truly believe they have their customer's best interests at heart. They seem to really understand the value of a life-long customer and work hard to build that trusting relationship. I had embarrassing hadn't maintained my bike in 3-4 years while it sat collecting dust. I brought it into the shop and was very pleased with the attentiveness of the service guy. He asked specific questions to understand what I wanted to ensure it aligned with my expectations. He reviewed some products and searched and found me some deals. Very stoked. I left with a strong feeling this is a shop that very much understands and is focused on high quality customer service. Stoked. Roaring Mouse is my new favorite bike shop in SF/Marin area. I've used them for great service, I just bought two new bikes from them, and plan to go back for more. They helped my 11 year old get his first mountain bike, and helped me buy my first gravel bike. Expertise all around. A few reasons they're the best shop around: 1) Attitude: these guys don't judge.
