The bicycles for sale are beautiful and top of the line racing bikes. The mechanics have to be amongst the best to service bikes in this category. My only issue is that when you are a first time customer, looking to get a repair done, they require that all the parts be removed and reinstalled to find out everything wrong with the bicycle. I had groupo upgrades in the past. The removal of the parts and installation of new parts is usually in the $300-$350 range. I never came across a policy like this in 40 years of cycling. read more

Above Category is a very contemporary bike shop. The shop is located in the beautiful town of Sausalito. Curb appeal this shop looks amazing and inside just oozes class. Inside you'll find an array of baller bike parts and what I want to call it an art gallery of bikes and bike frames. Onto my first hand experience with this shop. I was visiting the Bay Area for the day and was in desperate need of a Thomson stem with very specific specs. Calling around and losing hope of finding one at other LBS's I almost gave up. Finally I stumbled upon this shop on Yelp and decided to call. Upon picking up I was greeted by Phillip whom was very courteous and professional. I provided the part and specs I needed and they did indeed have one more left. Long story short I stopped by picked up the part I needed and was on my way out happily. I will say this shop is more roadie focused but nonetheless very quality parts and bikes they stock. If I ever decide to become a roadie I'll be revisiting for sure. This store is one of the best, if not the best, looking bike stores I have ever seen. Everything is high end and it's designed with simple, clean and slick industrial design. But the very reasons why I am giving this shop 5 stars are: 1 - quality of service. I came in for an issue to my bottom bracket and crankset, and it was thoroughly troubleshooted and flawlessly fixed. The whole B.B. was taken out, reinstalled correctly and recalibrated. New correct spacers were installed 2 - speed of service. They delivered in less than one hour, and I only have them a quick heads up call in the morning. Showed up at 4.45 and was out by 5.45 3 - courtesy. I have been to many unpleasant bike shops, but here everybody was nice and kind. 4 - knowledge. They are Pinarello dealers and they know everything about the bike For me they are totally worth getting out of my way to have my F10 serviced. Their work is top notch. read more

Above Category is a one of a kind extremely high end cycling shop. They focus on road bikes, but I have seen the occasional XC hardtail. This shop reminds me of my favorite cycling shops in the Seattle area where I grew up. Entering Above Category reminded me of when I was 14, walking into the Pine Street Pro Shop in Seattle's Captial Hill, and they had a sectioned off area of all the custom Klein road and mountain bikes. Serious Eye Candy, at serious prices, but the best never comes cheap. What I do love about these guys is that whether you buy a $15 pair of socks or interested in a $15,000 wunder ride, they treat you like a valued customer with none of the pretentious bike snobbery you find in other boutique type shops. I make my way to Above Category whenever I want to feel like a kid again. The details are what differentiate good from great, and this shop is a truly great shop. read more

In life, you get what you pay for. The people who gave this place 1 star need some good therapy in order to help love themselves more. Don't beat yourself up, and call names, just because you can't afford to play. And for the record, they don't just sell $20k bikes, but for those who want them, they're great on that front, too. No trust fund babies here. Or schraeder valves, either. Picked up a new dirt build from AC, and was very happy with my experience. I was given plenty of options on how I could value engineer my new ride, but frankly, chose to treat myself. I was given updates on my build status. I was treated nicely, and was given lots of patience despite my many questions. I'd been smudging up their glass windows long enough with my drool, and I can tell you that the view from inside is even better than from the street. Do yourself a favor, and take a peek. I'm happy to say I'll be calling this place home for years to come. Thanks Chad, Karen, Michael, and everyone else for all your help. I love my new whip. read more

I just picked up my Big Leg Emma. Such a beautiful bike. Very under-stated for the beast that it is. This is way too much bike for me, but rest assured I will ride this thing into the ground. Got there at 3:49pm on a Friday. The hours listed on the door said that they we're open until 6:00pm. The guy working came to the door anyway and told me they were closed but that "they wouldn't be able to help me anyway since I have schraeder valves." If you're in a pinch and need a flat repaired or just want to be treated respectfully then go somewhere else. I popped into A Bicycle Odyssey a couple blocks away and they repaired my flat in 10 minutes. Stay away from Above Category. read more

Stumbled across this place one evening and really liked the look and style of the shop. I needed some new shorts so thought I would check it out. Once in, I was really impressed with what was on offer. I met Matt who is a really nice guy, well informed. He helped me out with a few jerseys and a pair of shorts from Q36.5. I moved to the Bay Area 7 months ago and after testing a number of east bay (where I live) and SF shops I was finally relieved to find Above Category... the only shop so far who knows how to build a tubular race wheel correctly! In addition, the service, mechanics and show room staff are all experienced riders and wrenches and know what they are talking about. For experienced cyclists, who have little compunction about spending exorbitant sums for the most expensive and esoteric equipment, clothing and accessories, this is your place. AC has found its home in an area that loves being presented with the finest of everything. Yet the law of diminishing returns plays as great a role in the world of cycling as anywhere else and no more so than the in approach to the market this shop employs. One would assume that in the golden pantheon occupied by the fabulously priced Pinarello bicycle, any problems, flaws or failures in such a top of the market item would be supported by a deservedly obsequious attention to the concerns of their patrons, not to mention the reputation of one of the premier brands they represent. Though my Pinarello was not purchased from AC, as Pinarello dealers they handled its reconditioning and transfer from inGamba to myself after a four month season in Italy comprising an estimated 900 miles. I could be forgiven for thinking that they might step forward in some fashion to defend one of their brands in the face of an unexplainable, uncharacteristic and unacceptable failure occurring within an otherwise pristine bicycle frame after a mere follow-on 21 rides and 700 miles. This not only didn't happen, it was made pretty clear that they wanted nothing to do with me or the problem. When an employee in attendance was asked what he would do in my shoes, his response: "buy a new frame" ($5400) struck me speechless. The owner, Chad, wandered by during this exchange and wouldn't even meet my eye much less involve himself. Were there any helpful suggestions about alternatives, such as repair? No. Did they even seem interested in selling me a new frame? No. So "buy a new frame" (but from someone else apparently) are the words that I take away from my last ever foray into this "prestigious", "high-end" emporium of bicycle nirvana. I now have a copy of the "Ferrari" of bicycles, with a replacement cost approaching $10,000, that while pristine enough to pass for nearly new and with a minor defect only visible under extremely close inspection, that is unusable - if personal safety is of any importance. So, I certainly wish you better Luck. But I would suggest considering cost-benefit ratio along with the law of diminishing returns when exploring any new bicycle acquisition. Further, that Studio Velo in Mill Valley has demonstrated a very different and far more engaging approach to their market and the people that inhabit that market. read more
