Not very friendly at all. I've been riding road bikes for over 30 years. I'm used to going to Sunshine Bikes in Farifax and the Village Peddler in Larkspur where they are very personable and helpful. I had a crash in Mill Valley and came in to get a part (and fix it myself as I was told they could do it later which is understandable as they were busy I'm happy to do my own work) and get home. One of the young mechanics in the back told me they had a first aid kit and two customers asked if I was ok. The older guys at the front and the service desk were not very friendly (the latter seemed more concerned I was going to walk out with the part than if I was ok and would be able to get back on my bike). I did witness them being very pleasant to folks in there looking to buy. I honestly felt like an unwelcome burden as opposed to a fellow cyclist who could use some help. Maybe that is my own stuff but this is definitely a strong feeling I got. I used to live in Mill Valley and have been here many times but not for several years. It's definitely changed. I would go to another bike shop, there are plenty around. Sorry, I don't usually write poor reviews but was upset by this experience. read more

fabulous folks at Tam bikes. these good people helped me get into an E-bike that was perfect for me. I am an experienced road and mountain cyclist but didn't know much about how to think about choosing an e-bike for me. i just turned 76 and had been experimenting renting e-mountain bikes from Tam. Hella fun but a bit too heavy for me. they recommended I try a specialized Vado sl, and loved it. Half the weight of the mountain bike and can easily ride it around town and even lift it on my bike rack. Really appreciated their patience with and love the bike I ended up with. 5 stars all around! I will continue to rent the Specialized e-mountain bike from them. not willing to give it up yet!!! read more

I was on vacation, cycling in Marin, and on the GG Bridge my dropper post collapses, won't work. I made it to Mikes Bikes in Sausalito, at around 5:20pm, and a dismissive mechanic told me, without really inspecting the bike, that I needed a new dropper post, special order ($$$), could not get to it for 5 days--in other words, 'wait, pay up or get lost tourist'. I called Mt Tam and they told me to come over--got there 20 minutes before closing, told them my situation, and a mechanic patiently pulled the dropper post, straightened and tightened the cable and the bottom of the post--and it worked. Knowledgeable, kind, patient. It saved my vacation. If I lived here--this would be my shop. read more

Great folks over at Tam Bikes I've purchased certain things that they had to order tires, and then even stayed open a few extra minutes beyond closing so that I could pick them up. I was dealing with a mysterious creak on my bike, and I reached out to see if I could bring it in to diagnose and find the problem. James responded with a super detailed list of things to test out on my own before bringing it in, due to the fact that diagnosing creaks can sometimes be more involved and expensive to figure out, and they wanted to do their best to shorten and simplify the process. I ended up figuring out that it was the quick link being worn and making contact with the cassette. Overall just excellent customer service, and even though I ultimately didn't need to bring my bike in, I absolutely will be using Tam Bikes as my local shop moving forward read more

Place rules. Mountain bike was invented in their back yard and this is the nucleus that keeps the famous bike rolling. I've purchased 15K worth of Bikes here and they always have forts delivery of leading edge bikes when others in a 400 mile radius do not. Heading there now to get my blown out rear shock replaced and new sprocket that exploded and sheared off bike after ripping hills Would t go anywhere else. My kids are all on board as well read more

Great bike shop in Mill Valley. Excellent selection. I'm a Specialized guy, and this is one of their main lines. They actually have two shops right next door to each other. The main shop has mostly non-motorized bikes, while the smaller shop next door is all e-bikes. Stopped short of 5 stars only because some of their staff are, how should I say this? .... grumpy. It's important to keep this comment in perspective. Most of their staff are great, but the grumpsters are there, and very unpleasant to deal with. All-in-all these guys know what they're talking about, and they know the MTB trails really well around Mt. Tam and surrounding area. read more

Confirmation for Order No. 092824-091705-735 Christy was very rude and unpleasant to to work with; she gave the most horrible customer service I've ever experienced personally and in all my years working as a bike mechanic/customer service agent in the cycling industry. We make orders and handle customer an infinite times amount better than she did, and she does not deserve to be in her position. She literally twisted Tam Bike Policy's and was very offensive for no reason as I was being polite and trying to understand why she was creating her own policy which did not reflect Tams policy correctly at the time. She claimed they pocketed customers shipping fees on returns, (which they do not as of the policy statement during our phone call) Their 100% guarantee was in part, "In the event you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, we will refund the original purchase amount..." this did not include any labor or handling charges unless they were outgoing orders via policy, which were included during a purchase but not a return; returns however required you to pay shipping to make a return. So A claim has been submitted to original payment method agency with proof of policy before any changes to the site can be made so any updates do not apply. Please train your reps better and make sure their happy because she clearly was not. read more

Small, local shop with people who know their stuff. Brought in my dusty Specialized Ruby assuming I'd need to have a complete tune-up after not riding it since before Covid. They called the bike mechanic from the back who put the bike on a stand, spun the wheels, checked the brakes and filled the tires. He took the bike off the rack and said it's ready to ride. I didn't spend a dime and he wouldn't take a tip. I'll be back to make a purchase next time! read more

I brought my 2020 Specialized Turbo Levo Comp to Tam Bikes to have what I like to call, a Pro Tune. That is...adjust brakes, service the shock and fork, adjust the derailleur, clean and lube all the linkages, and basically tear down my bike and make it like new. I even brought a new fork and new suspension link for them to install. All I can say is they delivered. I just rode it today at Nisene in Aptos the day after I had the tune up, and it rode just as I wanted it to. Like Buttah! It was like riding a new bike. In my opinion, Tam Bikes is the best bike shop in the San Francisco Bay Area. I've been to many bike shops all over the bay, and these guys don't just sell bikes, they live bikes. They know everything about how to fix a bike, build a bike, rebuild a bike, and put you on the right bike to fit your riding style. They do this with an amazing team of employees who are passionate about everything mountain bikes, and it shows with their friendliness, cool demeanors, smiles, attention to detail, and excitement to be working at this awesome shop. If you are looking for a pro-level bike shop to tune your bike, to buy a new bike, upgrade your current bike, or fix something that's not working on your bike, make the drive from wherever you are. That's what I did, and will continue to do. I live in San Jose, and the one hour fifteen minute drive to Mill Valley is worth it to have my $7000 mountain bike in the best hands. read more

The owner is lovely and we've rented half a dozen times from them, but there's a woman who works there who is beyond rude. Scolded a group of adults about riding bikes "around town" and the risk of them being stolen. Like, do you rent bikes or not? Just called to ask about rentals today and she picked up the phone and had myriad questions about our intentions for renting the bikes before eventually telling us we aren't the sort of customers they want. We were riding to... Tiburon. Hopeless place -- go to Mad Dogs & Englishmen instead. read more

My bike has been collecting dust for awhile, as the brake cable came off and the front derailleur needed to be adjusted. I thought the tubes might need to be replaced as well. I called before going, and they said to bring it in. The mechanic fixed it in about 15 minutes and even adjusted the rear derailleur as well. He also cut off the end of the kickstand to make it shorter. The kickstand never worked on this bike (and I've had it for 15 years). He fixed it in like 2 seconds. From this experience, this is now my go to bike shop! read more

Used to be a great bike shop, very helpful and great customer service. It is not that any longer. Took my bike in for service and they said that they would not look at it for a week and then they required a non-refundable deposit for an appointment. My last few visits have seen a deterioration in service and an increase in bad attitude. It is as though they really do not want my business. Not sure what happened with this place. I came in the other day with a flat tire on the back of my bike. I was helped by the Austria-Hungarian-Serbian-Albanian mechanic George, who proved himself to be a wizard behind the bench. Not only did he fix my flat but he informed me of a needed shifting adjustment, which we were both thrilled to address on the spot. I was assisted by the more-than-capable Nick at the register, who stoked me out with some crafty on-the-house stickers and sent me on my way. Safety precautions were taken, masks worn etc... and I'm sure, though it's hard to tell, they were all smiling under there! Told all my friends! I will definitely be back! read more

This is 2 times now that I have brought my practically new e-Nike to this shop. The first time there was a noise coming from the rear tire and the second time was when we wanted to make the brakes more effective as the bikes look like "Rad" bikes and are heavy. Both times, they tried to "sell" us. 1st time- "did you put this together yourself?" Answer, "no, it was pre-assembled". They didn't help on the noise, which has since gone away. Instead they said "you should have all tuned up for xxx fee". I said "this is brand new." And then he said "a lot of these bikes aren't built right and put together right." Yes...it's true. A brand he was not familiar with was immediately discounted as not a good bike. Attitude. We left. Second time: we came back and explained we needed a nut as one fell off and we wanted to improve the braking. They, again stunningly said "sell the bike, it's not worth putting better brakes on it". They also could not determine what the nut was without the bike that was missing it. Which is another way of saying "even though you have the same bike, with the same nut and bolt in front of me, we want you to bring the other bike and pay us to replace the bolt". Rather than simply looking at the bike that was in front of them and selling us the nut that fit on the bike. Fact: They don't like to fix bikes they don't sell is the message, and they want a big fee to help you and give you attitude and degrade what you have purchased because they aren't familiar. The mechanics here were kind enough to help me out on the spot, 2 days in a row. Day 1, they replaced a bent rotor and tuned up sloppy shifting on my MTB within 15 minutes. The next day, they swapped brake pads and bled my front brake on my road bike, again within 15 minutes of me walking in. Not from around here, but this will be my go-to shop whenever I am in town! I was ecstatic that Tam Bikes had the Specialized Crux bike I've been looking for. I was able to purchase the bike at a discounted price over the phone as I reside in Los Angeles. Knowing I would be driving 7hrs to pick up my bike -- I decided to make a mini vacation out of it. I called Tam Bikes prior to leaving to let them know when I'd be arriving. They said that the bike would be fully built, tuned up and ready to go. The man who helped me on the phone was very kind and helpful. I should add that I could have gone to a different store that was in San Diego but the interaction on the phone told me the trip would be worth it because it meant the customer service would be great, and being treated with respect and kindness is worth the drive. When I arrived after a 7hr drive... there was one person ahead of us waiting in line to be helped. A young boy who must have been the owners son or family friend (maybe 14 years old) asked how he could help me. I told him I purchased a bike and was here to pick it up. He had us come inside so that he could go and grab the bike -- I also wanted to purchase a helmet for me and my fiancé. I had them set aside the Specialized helmets with ANGi integrated ($200 each) over the phone the day before. Unfortunately -- when I mentioned the helmets to the young boy he acknowledged the helmets that were on hold but then walked me over to other helmets and pointed out a $45 one. I didn't want to be rude because he was just trying to help and he was being very polite. We decided just to get the $45 helmets because the boy was rushing the whole process and didn't seem too keen on helping us with the products we wanted. Unfortunately for Tams Bikes they missed out on a $400+ sale because of this. Having the child help us made things awkward because we didn't want to hurt his feelings or make him feel like he wasn't doing a good enough job. This was the biggest problem. Although the boy who "helped" me was very sweet... I just spent over $2000 on a new bike. No one (all4-5 adult male employees and probably the manager in the store) acknowledged us. None of the "adults" even said hi. They never asked if they could help or if I needed anything else. Instead, a child helped me... and he didn't even ask if I wanted to test-ride my new bike. I had to ask him to readjust the seat, he never even offered. The young boy had me get on the bike and awkwardly try to sit on the bike while he barely could handle holding the bike up... I'm not a small woman and he was barely 75 lbs. I could hear the adults who were working on bikes behind us laughing at what was going on. This was one of the most disrespectful & unappreciative experiences I've had in a small business. I understand Covid is going on. Things are strange right now. But you knew I was coming in.. you knew I was driving a long distance for what was supposed to be an exciting purchase. We drove 7 hours to give you my business and the only thing I got was laughed at by your rude employees and helped by a child. I expected at the very least to be treated with respect and I didn't even get that. Beyond disappointed. If I could give no stars I would. By the way, I rode my bike around San Francisco today. The back tire is clicking. I wouldn't want to take my bike back here even if it was my only option. I'm going to wait until I return to LA and take my business where it's welcomed. Where it's wanted. Where an adult will help me. It's unfortunate because I wanted to purchase the $200 Specialized helmets along with water bottle holders, new pedals, and other bike equipment but I'll be purchasing that elsewhere. The young boy deserves 5 stars for being a good sport. But he's barely 16. Come on guys. You allowed him to handle a purchase I made... a $2,000 purchase. Think about it. Poor business model. P.S. Don't go here for repairs. I feel gaslighted. Had a flat while riding in Tennessee Valley. Went here to get it fixed. They recommended a tubeless setup and I had been considering that anyway, so I said yes. Front tire clearly didn't seal correctly. It leaked air within hours. So I didn't ride and took it back days later (soonest I found time to drive up from SF). They insisted it was fine. They barely checked despite me saying that front wheel was losing air at different rate than back wheel (both changed at same time). "Just ride it to spread the sealant - you'll be fine." Well I did. Filled up tires right before starting. Front wheel was flat within 2 miles of leaving. Used 2 air cartridges to get home. $120 wasted, plus time. read more

There are many great people who work at Tam Bikes, and I appreciate them all, but recently I had a very bad experience, especially when the manager -- for no justifiable reason -- threatened to call the police on me. A couple of days ago I purchased a new saddle and a water bottle holder. I was charged over $100 for this, perhaps because I asked them to put some oil on the chain also. The entire thing took like 10 minutes, but I was charged $40 for labor. It seemed expensive, but the people seemed very competent and accommodating. So I didn't mind paying extra. When they gave me my bike back, though, I asked where the water bottle was. They said that the water bottle would be an extra $7 plus. Okay, I paid it. The water bottle had the "Tam Bikes" logo advertised on it, and I remember thinking that this seemed way overpriced, but I let it go. Problem was, however, that the seat was very uncomfortable. So today I returned to the store to ask if I could exchange it for another, but they refused: no returns. I was willing to pay extra, but this time they refused accommodating me. I then asked the manager if I could have my original Schwinn seat back, and he shrugged and said they didn't have it anymore. When I asked him if he could compensate me, he out-of-nowhere threatened to call the police on me -- he said because I wasn't wearing my face-mask. So I put it back on. When I asked him for his name, he told me, but he didn't like me asking because right-away he told me to step aside, threatening again to call the police. This could have been justified if I had raised my voice or if I had called him names, but I had remained calm and respectful the entire time. Later that day I called the store, hoping to speak to someone else, but the same manager answered the phone, told me to go to hell, and hung up the phone. read more

Awesome shop with friendly, knowledgeable staff. They helped me sort out a tubeless tire issue while they were closing up and I was still able to get my evening ride in. Some of the components on modern mountain bikes practically require a doctoral degree to troubleshoot, so it's nice having these guys down the street when I get in over my head on home repairs. They're doing a good job with Covid protocols and keeping up with the insane demand for bike work right now. Also love that they employ local teenagers--great community small business. I'm so stoked that this is my local bike shop! I destroyed my rear (tubeless) tire on a Saturday mountain bike ride. I was hoping to ride the same bike on Sunday so I called ahead to Tam Bikes to find out if they had the tire I wanted and in the size I needed. They did! Although i could have maybe kind of repaired it myself at home, I knew it would take me hours and I'd make a mess. So I brought the bike in early on a Sunday (! they were open !). The mechanic brought it back to his stand almost immediately (thanks, Tim!) and basically had it done by the time I walked my dog around the block. I felt very taken care of by everyone I interacted with in the shop that day and will happily return anytime to spend money and support this great local business. You should too. read more

I was standing around & after more than 15 min, I realized where did he go? I've asked one Asian guy & he ran through his comp & said they didn't have any 24in wheel bike. While I was taking to this guy, I saw the other guy was sitting by the corner & drinking coffee. Really rude! I would never come to this place. P.S. I got my son's Hot rock bike at Mike's bike in Berkeley this morning. They didn't have it in stock but offered to order for me. Their services are way better than these guys here. read more
