I am a self proclaimed connoisseur of pancakes. I have done my share of traveling and if available I will order pancakes for breakfast. Roadside has the best pancakes. Order their blueberry or just a plain cake. A word of caution, only order one cake cuz there is no way you can eat two at a sitting. The cakes are larger than the plate. I wandered in here because a young lady recommended their milkshakes. While i was there I felt i had to order something and i noticed a lot of elderly folks enjoying their meal. I was a little grossed out while waiting due to the old carpeting on the floor and the dried floral arrangements. This place is old and dated and I just can't get past the atmosphere. A diner frozen in time (in the best way possible). This place is a great local restaurant. My first visit I had the beef hotshot, which was pretty good. Today I had a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Both were great and helped warm me up on this freezing winter day. The atmosphere is laid back and it seems like everyone knows each other here. The service was super friendly as well. I'd like to try their breakfast, which I'm guessing is pretty fantastic. Second visit back (the next day) I had the hot meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. It definitely came with plenty of gravy! It was a good meal. Very rich, savory, and filling. She said soup was good, sandwich ok and mine was dry but the au ju makes it all better, fries were good and all that for $17. Pretty affordable eats. Service was good and pretty fast. I was expecting a four star experience based upon its rating - boy was I mistaken! This place has a very hometown feel, and it really encompasses what the town of Aitkin is. The decor is a flashback to the 60s and is so very cute! I ordered a bacon blue cheese burger with seasoned fries, and my boyfriend got the roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. Both meals were stupendous, but I was dumbfounded by how much I loved the roast beef special! It tasted just like how my grandma makes her version of the meal. The bacon on my burger was superb, crispy and flavorful, and the burger overall was divine. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive and talked to us like we were regulars although this was our first time being there. I don't do many Yelp reviews, but I decided that this place deserved more than a 4 star average based upon my experience. read more

We stopped here to eat along the way to the cabin and it was my first time eating here. I ordered the beef sandwich with mash potatoes and gravy because I wanted something hot to eat. The gravy was poured all over the food. It was drenched. However, the sandwich was delicious. I could've had a different type of bread, but the beef was nice and easy to chew. The mashed potatoes were definitely the star. You could see the chunks of potatoes and even some skin so you know it's made there. I would come back and maybe try their huge pancakes. read more

For example, Husband had the hot beef sandwich; the beef was deli sliced roast beef served on store bought white bread smothered in what seemed to be canned gravy. The restaurant itself is dingy. We were looking for a good family restaurant while traveling thru the area. To our delight we gave Roadside Restaurant a try. We chose our seat and were quickly greeted with the special and ordered drinks. Shortly later we got our drinks and were able to order. I had the hot roast beef sandwich w mashed potatoes. The sandwich itself was good, the gravy and potatoes were great. I ate it all and it was the perfect amount. Both of the kids also ate all they were given too, which is a true measuring stick for me. One got a corn dog and fries off the kids menu and the other egg toast and sausage. My wife enjoyed her hot turkey sandwich as well. The service was excellent. Friendly but not at all pushy. We left a nice tip because of this and would eat there again any chance we get. read more

This is a tough one for me. The setting was classic diner and my food was average so that averages out to 3 stars. I had the hot turkey sandwich. The portions were as expected, huge. My issue is that it was really salty. Not a bad place, but may need to gradually bring their menu, or a few items, up to date. It was fun to feel like you stepped back in time, but unlike other venues, you don't get the sense they understands the nostalgic component, it just feels old. Lastly, it literally took about a half hour to get our food. It was enjoyable to sit back, take my time and enjoy the surroundings and talk with my fellow travel friends, but after about 20 minutes, I was hungry and ultimately this place fit the bill. Thinly sliced deli type roast beef and gravy that was probably purchased, not home made and definitely full of sodium. Small town hot beef sandwiches should be awesome not horrible.
