Note: when I was up here 80% of 2024, I made frequent stops here and was always happy with the food and service.... I NEVER tip any less than 20% no matter how bad or borderline the service may be; but for tonight's less than regretful experience at Road Hog Saloon, I had to make an exception. Arriving arounf 7:20 pm, I immediately noticed a smaller than normal crowd and took a seat at the bar and ordered iced tea from one of the two bartenders present. The more elder one took my order which was a rib eye medium rare (seared on the outisde with a warm red center), loaded baked potato (with extra butter and sour cream), and corn. To me, a very simple, straight forward order. After placing it, I turned my attention to my phone since I was trying to figure out my schedule for the rest of the month since requests were made for my time. I hear the bartender that took my order cuss and scream something and storm off to the other side of the bar which prompted the other bartender to address the situation. Customers came and went and my order finally arrived. Knowing how well Road Hog Saloon seasons their steaks, I had no reason to worry about the flavor and started to cut in......to what should have been a tender piece of meat that would give way to streaks of juices streaming out of it; instead, I was trying to cut through what felt like a strap of leather. Inspecting the piece I finally freed from the husk, I saw a mostly brown strip with the slightest hint of pink in the center. I set it aside for the opportunity when the bartender might swing by and ask how everything was and started in on my side items. When I was almost finished with my baked potato, the bartender finally makes eye contact with me and I told her that the steak was a little overdone (which was a gross understatement). To this, she snatches the plate from the bar top and bee lines to the kitchen. I didn't catch all of the conversation, but I did hear her finally say, "just drop it rare then!" She comes back to me and argues with me that the steak was medium rare and that is how they cook it with a pink center (but all the previous times I ordered from this establishment, it was seared with a warm red center). She says nothing other than, we are going to make it rare for you then. Time passes and I am about ready to just give up, ask for my check, and leave when the other bartender brings out another steak looking extremely under-seasoned and asks me to cut into it, which I did, and just wanting to put the evening behind me; I told her it was fine. Upon inspection of the new steak, I was amused to find that it was at least 1/3 fat and gristle and separated as much of it as I could for a side by side comparison (as pictured). Completely giving up, I just asked for a box (I have enough faith in my cooking skills to salvage the "steak") and my check. When she finally hands me my check, I noticed that the individual ordered items were not listed and I asked for an itemized receipt so I could turn it in for reimbursement from my employer. She then yells at me that she cannot produce an itemized receipt and what do I want her to do? Hand write the items on the receipt?!?!?! I decided to cut my losses and handed her my card and said I was done with her attitude and I just want to leave. She shoves the receipt with $35.01 at me and takes my card to run it. I get back a credit card receipt that shows that it was run for $36.41!!!! I waited awhile for her to return so I could ask her about the discrepancy, but even though I was sitting at the bar and she is a bartender; she did not make it back around to me. Giving up on any further interaction with her, I left a 10% tip since I did take up some time at my seat and left. I will probably never return here again despite all the good experience I've had, this one has completely ruined it for me. read more

I was in town visiting for the weekend and wanted to grab some dinner. I stopped here since it was close to where I was staying. I walked in and wasn't immediately greeted but once I was I was seated and given some water. I waited a pretty long wait till someone came by and asked if I had been helped. I said no and they said they would bring me a menu. I waited awhile longer and then was asked what I'd like to drink. With that being said they were busy and it was St. Patrick's Day. They were all running around so it wasn't like they didn't have a ton going on. Staff were all friendly. I ordered yuenling on draft and it was perfect. I waited awhile for a menu and asked what was her recommendation. She said the meat is smoked daily and I was in. I ordered the three meat plate, fried okra, and potato salad. I was not disappointed! It was so delicious. Okra was crunchy and perfect and the potato salad was like my grandmothers and I haven't had some like that in quite a long time. I love their spicy bbq sauce. I really enjoyed my beer and food and people were friendly. I absolutely recommend this place. I don't get a lot of good bbq around where I live so this was such a nice surprise. The food and kindness made up for the hiccup in service at the beginning. I actually enjoyed the stuff in the bar/restaurant and the outside was nice and had a screened in patio. Food is great. They open on Saturday & Sunday for breakfast. Breakfast is simple and very economical. They will customize your order if you need to. Hubby had egg platter which included a choice of meat. Gravy for breakfast is outstanding it has sausage in it & very well seasoned. They have daily lunch & dinner specials. The food is ridiculous and awesome. The service is fast paced and busy. The ambiance is a little too dark but still a cool environment. There are TVs to watch and drinks to be had. Breakfast was great. The pancake is as wide as a dinner plate and thick to boot...really only need 1. Biscuits and gravy so far are my favorite thing there. Been twice and tried a third time for lunch today, but the_ do t start lunch until 11:30 and disnt want to wait around to start. Our first experience with The Road Hog Saloon was fantastic. The food was delicious, the service fro Kristin(hope I spelled her name right!) was prompt and friendly. The owner, Jeff, came by the table to chat and tell us a little about his place. He couldn't stay long because he was helping clear tables. To me, that, was very impressive because it means that he supports his staff and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty! Hubby and I had the baby backs ribs. Wow, were they good! The meat had that nice pink smoke ring, the meat tender and falling off the bone. 6-7 ribs in the 1/2 order! Hubby raves about the potato salad (which doesn't happen!) and said the slaw was tasty. My fried okra was crisp and crunchy, baked beans delectable. My son and fiancé had the steak, and they said it was juicy, tender and tasty. Deserts were fantastic too! Met a friend here that lives in Ketchum and he raves about the place all the time. Finally came while I was visiting Grove and was not impressed. My 2 friends got the prime rib sliders and onion rings, while I got the roast beef with a side cole slaw. My first ding was it took over an hour to get sandwiches when the place was not busy. We were there around 1:00. My second and worst infraction was our waitress was wearing a jacket and the tip of her jacket touched my sandwich, I mentioned it to the waitstaff and all she said was, "Oh". Breakfast rating first! Yes, they have breakfast! Call to confirm on what days and time as we went on a Saturday morning. During high season at the lake (i.e. summer), the best places to grab breakfast on Monkey Island are typically Market Grill and Ms. Donna's, which are delicious, but usually very crowded! We noticed Road Hog started offering breakfast while visiting for lunch one day as the lunch menu was one page and the backside was an entire breakfast page! During July 4 weekend, we ran by Market Grill first as it's closest to our lake home, but it had a huge line, so we decided to drive to Road Hog and try their breakfast...and I'm glad we did! Road Hog offers your traditional American breakfast items like eggs, bacon, hash browns, sausage (patties), biscuits and gravy (white gravy was AMAZING), pancakes, and more! Each person in our group ordered the same plate which came with eggs, choice of meat, hash browns, and one biscuit and gravy...all for $6.99 per plate! It had few visitors for breakfast, so we assume not many people know about the breakfast menu or it would have been a lot busier. It has ample space as well, indoors and outdoors. We are SO HAPPY to have a new breakfast place on Monkey Island that offers plenty of menu options, homemade-tasting food, and unbeatable prices! Besides breakfast, you can't for wrong with their house-made smoked meats. The prime rib, pulled pork, brisket, burgers, all of it is done right! Friday nights are usually packed because of their Prime Rib Friday night highlight every week, but definitely worth it! One downside is that I didn't see breakfast potatoes on the menu, which are way better than hash browns, and the other is that the smokers can be intense during the evenings. My sister and I came to the lake for the weekend and were told this place had amazing ribs, so we ordered them to go. We went inside to get our food wearing face masks, and were immediately verbally accosted by a group of 7 men. I have never been so angry and sad at the same time. Horrible experience and we will NEVER go back. The poor waitress was trying to help but these men were extremely aggressive & rude. They made my sister and I feel extremely uncomfortable and worried for our safety. I expected better from Oklahoma. My husband and I are in town for a fishing tournament on Grand and drove by this place one night. The parking lot was full so we thought we would try it the following day for an early dinner. Good parts - The wait staff was very nice and attentive. And there are a number of televisions around the room to watch sporting events. Bad parts - This is a bar that serves food (more than a restaurant) and there is usually someone smoking. I walked out of there smelling like smoke. The food was just okay.
