Wow! This is so *cool - a legitimate ice-cream shop & so close to home!…read more We were greeted not only by an amazing aroma - but also by Sasha who helped us at the counter. They feature several different varieties of waffle cones, sugar cones and cups for ice cream. The cases were loaded with a wonderful selection of Umpqua Ice Cream, and they offer many toppings!

The store features regional ice creams brands: Umpqua, Cascade Glacier, and Tillamook. They had 16 flavors including Old World Spumoni, Cranberry Cheesecake, Kona Coffee, Marionberry Pie, Maple Nut, and Huckleberry Heaven. I ordered a Kid's Cone of Old World Spumoni because it is a flavor that is hard to find. In fact, it had been decades since I last had it. The ice cream cone size was generous. This was my first time trying Umpqua Ice Cream. It was pretty good. The customer service from Michael was excellent! The store interior consists of two rooms and a window facing counter. There's also a bistro table outside. The tables and chairs were made by the owners. Whether you live nearby or are looking to take a break from highway driving, this is a nice stop. The ice cream is good, but not great. I wish they were selling Snoqualmie Ice Cream or Acme, both of which are made in Washington and are far superior to all three of the Oregon branded ice creams Kalama Cone sells. If I had an ice cream business, I would stay away from selling ice cream brands that can be found in most grocery stores. I say that as someone who drove an ice cream truck one summer. The items that sold best were those that weren't readily available elsewhere and cheaper to buy directly. I have pictures of the ice cream in the case, but I wasn't able to get a picture of my cone because I was traveling alone, my hands were full, and I didn't have a way to take a photo without risking dropping the ice cream. We rolled into Cascade Locks on a Sunday in July, the kind of Gorge afternoon where everyone within…read morefifty miles has the same idea: get out, get sun, get a burger. Eastwind Drive-In sits right on Wa Na Pa Street, red and white building, that iconic soft serve and hamburger sign swinging out front like it's been doing this since before any of us were born. And it has. The line was out the door and down the sidewalk by 3pm, easy thirty minute wait, and nobody seemed to mind. That tells you something before you even taste the food. We ordered the double bacon cheeseburger, and it did not disappoint. Real griddled beef, two patties, melted cheddar doing exactly what melted cheddar should do, crisp lettuce, all of it stacked on a sesame bun that held together through the whole ordeal, which matters more than people think when you're eating standing up in a parking lot with a dog giving you the full guilt trip. Speaking of: we took our food down to the park by the lake, picnic tables under the trees, and Willow, our English lab, decided that burger was the single most important object in the entire state of Oregon. Nose right up against it, patient as a saint, working every angle. She didn't get any. She deserved some. That's the tension of loving a good dog and a good burger at the same time. Prices are fair for what you get, hamburger starts under seven dollars, the shakes and soft serve looked like the real draw for half the line, and the menu board out front covers everything from tater tots to Italian cream soda, which is a detail I did not expect and now can't stop thinking about. If you're passing through Cascade Locks, Eastwind Drive-In is worth the wait. Bring cash patience, bring an appetite, and if you bring a dog, be ready to share eye contact you won't win.

I haven't had a cone this big since I was a kid and the little place in Sandy Oregon made these usage swirl ice cream cones! This was so big, especially for only $6! I ended up sharing with my pups (they were very happy about that, for sure!). Definitely have to stop here any time you're near Cascade Locks! Also worth mentioning that they open early (8 am, I believe) but also close early (5 pm).

Parking is distinctly challenging. I'm really lucky if I can park within a block of the entrance. The line also seems to move very slowly most of the time. I usually give myself an extra buffer of time for this location, which also includes the typical time that I would spend in a line for this type of popular product. It has to be a special occasion for me to invest that much effort to indulge in quality ice cream. I do like that you can have unlimited samples and the staff is usually pretty friendly. I like that the flavors rotate seasonally and the bathroom is usually clean. Unfortunately, there's not much seating inside and there's also minimal options for sitting outside. This place is built well for people who will happen to be walking by on the sidewalk and feel like a scoop of ice cream while having no other immediate plans to follow... and also don't intend stick around to eat it. Maybe go grab a pint to go and call it compromise?
