    Great atmosphere and decor

I found this place off yelp. It looked pretty good so we decided to have brunch. Man.... this place is so delicious I had the tostada with Barbacoa and my husband had the Chilaquiles with red and green salsa with brisket. RJ's is so authentic, so delicious, absolutely love! Best Oaxacan food I've had. Too bad I don't live in Portland, but I will definitely go back when I visit. The staff was friendly, and the place was extremely clean.

Went back again to make sure this place was still great after my first two visits and lo and behold, it was! What a great place from it's cleanliness to its Waite staff and of course, it's amazing menu and food presentation. I opted for the skillet with brisket and my mom again went for her favorite chimichanga. This place is off the chain! One of my top spots in Portland, Oregon (and there's a lot of great ones to choose from).

I stopped in at RJ Skillets and ordered breakfast to go. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. Their service alone is worth a visit, in my opinion. I ordered Chilaquiles for myself and added sour cream and avocado. I also ordered a steak burrito and the hash for other family members. On top of that, I ordered two orders of churros and a piece of tres leches cake. Our food was prepared to order and the wait was 10-15 minutes. While I waited, I was offered a glass of water, which I appreciated. The chilaquiles were sooooo good! I chose the brisket as my meat. The portion size is generous. I savored every bite of my food. I tried a churro and it was also delicious. The churro had strawberry in it. It was hard to eat just one. The restaurant is clean and inviting. I would have rated five stars, however, they forgot my tres leches cake. I tried calling and no one answered. I didn't go back for it but was hoping I could later today or tomorrow. I'll definitely go back again but will check my order to ensure it's accurate before leaving.

They penny and dimed everything when telling us it was free of charge. Even the chips weren't free. The server told us more salsa was free but for guac it would be extra. Ok perfect we will just get more salsa. Turns out, they charged us for more salsa too? Absolutely insane. We ordered the Beef Chilaquiles and asked for no cheese on just the beans. They didn't put cheese on anything on the plate which was ok. So we asked for some cheese to put on the dish. They charged us $2 for it?!? Make it make sense. The server just played in our face. Disappointing and not worth the price.

Stopped back in 8:00 on Saturday. The front of the house while have always been friendly and welcoming- seems to have grown into the expansion, they seemed more relaxed and confident. Consistently has always been important, this team absolutely nails it! I ordered the same mole enchiladas that I had a couple of years ago - they were amazing then and just as amazing this time around! If you haven't yet - do stop in!

Awesome family owned restaurant. Great food and great service with a very chill vibe. We came here for dinner and really want to try their brunch I feel like it's a hidden gem. Super nice owners. Located in NE Portland, in the Alberta neighborhood.

Wow absolutely loved our visit to RJ Skillets this last weekend. Would most definitely go back. We came in on a Saturday morning and were quickly seated to a nice table by the window. The inside space is airy but industrial with exposed concrete but lovely skylights which were perfect for a sunny day. The service was really on point. We felt well taken care of for the entire meal and waters were on the table within seconds of sitting down. The staff was kind and attentive throughout the meal, better service than I'll get at even some upscale restaurants. Now to the food. They're only open for breakfast and lunch so you have the option to pick either direction of dishes. I opted for the traditional green salsa enchiladas and by gf went with the mole oaxacan omelette. We also got an empanada to start the meal. Everything tasted extremely fresh and the plating was also quite impressive. The portions were sizable which I always appreciate. Even the fruit side we ordered, which most places would probably overlook, was super fresh with berries and presented beautifully. This place really delivered, and they're pumping out some great food. Would highly recommend as a great breakfast spot in the area.

Delicioso Oaxacan cuisine, Great service attentive, respectful and patient. This is my second visit.Once during the weekend (very busy) so expect a wait time. During the week, much quieter. Ordered jamaica to drink (hibiscus tea), Chile Verde Brisket Omelette, and French toast combo. Recommend the omelette brisket!

Super good breakfast burrito here. The tortilla was perfect. Chewy and soft. I really liked the eggs and potato's too. Good portion as well. I believe it was 14.50$ and I had leftovers. The two servers who were there when I came in were super attentive and sweet. Food came out pretty fast too although I did come on a Monday. This spot doesn't have the cutest ambiance but there's lots of seating and the food is great. I love Mexican food and brunch so naturally I really enjoyed this spot.

It was pretty good. We were visiting from Southern California so the Mexican food is obviously going to be a little bit different. The breakfast mole enchiladas are good and the green sauce shrimp enchiladas are amazing! The breakfast burrito was just okay. The salsas were very different than what we're used to but all tasty. Even the bloody mary had a different flavor than we are used to but was also good.

    Michelada
    M M.

Incredibly friendly and efficient service and a relaxing atmosphere. My measure for any Oaxacan or Mexican restaurant are the mole enchiladas. These were exquisite and reminded me of the ones in my favorite spots in Oaxaca. And what made my meal even better was the really well made Michelada. Great first experience and I'm sure I'll be back many times. Highly recommend!

Breakfast tostada with carnitas, breakfast burrito, Bloody Maria, chips and salsa.
    Bee F.

We started with chips and salsa, and then Miki tried the breakfast burrito and I had the breakfast tostada with carnitas. I also had the Bloody Maria, as their take on it sounded really good and Miki had the Piña Jaritos. Drinks and chips arrived very quickly. The chips were house-made, as were the salsas which were very tasty and there were 3 of them with a diversity of heat and flavor. They also mixed together well to achieve a very tasty concoction. The Bloody Maria is for those like me who enjoy more than the usual spice and this did not disappoint! The flavor was great and it had almost a small appetizer's worth of veggies marinating in there which also tasted great. Soon after, arrived the mains. Miki's burrito was... well... pretty much that. She could only finish about 1/3 of it in a testament to its size. Flavor was good, but really, it was a boring choice. My tostada had some undeclared dairy, but I powered on. Every once in a while, it's worth the risk to your GI tract . Carnitas are almost a bellwether for a Mexican restaurant. If they are good, so's the restaurant, if they are dry, chunky, tough... well, so is the restaurant. These were moist and properly slow cooked. I'd have appreciated a little time on the flat top to crisp up the outside, and add a bit of texture and char. The fried egg was good and created the desired sauciness that pulled everything together into a very flavorful whole. Overall, I was pretty happy. This is better than the average roadside taqueria in TX and as good as Jorge's or Ninfa's. It's not up there with the absolute best, which for me at this moment in Portland is Ki'ikibaa who also have Cochinitas Pibil, which was sadly not on the menu here.

The space itself is smaller and intimate, so bringing a larger group than about 4-5 people might not be ideal. The ambiance definitely gave Italy vibes, for sure. The chicken liver mousse was a good consistency, paired with the figs gave a nice balance between sweet and savory. The steak frites was a classic, steak was a good portion and cooked medium rare, but I'm sure if you wanted it more cooked through, you could make that request. The fries were definitely a standout, great texture and the garlic flavor gave a good contrast to the steak. My favorite dish was the dessert, the flaky crust gave a nice texture to the cream insides. I'm a huge passionfruit fan, so once I saw it was on the menu, I knew I had to try it. It didn't disappoint and I would definitely come back just for this dish alone. Overall a solid experience and would recommend people to try Canard out at least once!
