Next time, I would choose a site farther back in the campground for a quieter experience. The campground amenities were clean and well-maintained. They offer showers, restrooms, tv hookups, and a small on-site store stocked with basic necessities. They also sell firewood, which was very convenient. Overall, we had a great stay and would definitely consider returning, especially if we could snag a site a bit deeper in the park.

The campground is beautiful but the camp host was a complete nightmare…read more I don't recommend doing the first come first serve camping even though the website directs you to, because the host doesn't update the reservation signs on time and then will kick you out due to it. We had looked up the campground on line ahead of time and thoroughly read through their first come first serve policy. We were nervous about getting a spot so we were there at 10 am. The directions are: Step 1.Check the reservation signs Step 2. Find a site that doesn't have reservations for that day. Step 3. Pay for the site in cash, fill out the envelope, hang the pass in your vehicle. We did everything exactly how it said. I even called a friend who had been camping there for decades to double check the instructions. The camp host sign said "camp host is off duty" so there was no one on sight to check in with. We stayed at our site until 12:30 setting up and playing cards. Then we left to the river to swim. When we came back at 5 with two wet, hungry kids to cook dinner, someone else was in our campsite. They were very nice and I realized they must have double booked our site. That was a bummer but not that big of a deal. I could have just gone to a different site. The other guest wasn't mad, I wasn't mad, it was a simple mistake. The issue was that I had dropped my 12 year old daughter off at the bathroom that was only a few sites down but the road was a one direction road so I had driven the loop around and she showed up at the site before me and was sent away so I had to go find her before I could more my stuff. She had panicked when the host tried to lecture her and she ran off to find me. There was no phone reception so I had to go find her. Once I had my daughter I came back and we started packing up. The female host came and was very aggressive towards us. I explained that we followed all the steps and the reservation sign clearly was for yesterday and not today. The male host asked her if she had updated the reservation sign. She said "yes I did it at 10am." But we had got there at 10:30 and it wasn't updated. We were there until 12:30 and it still wasn't updated. It was clearly her fault but she was yelling at us. I raised my voice and told her to stop speaking to us with so much disrespect. I said we were leaving and there was no need for her to yell at us. Then my daughter and I went back to packing. The host had moved all of our stuff and put our clothes in the dirt. The guests who had also books the site kept apologizing to us. They were very sweet and I told them it was ok and not their fault. When we were done packing up the ranger came. I explained the situation and he asked if he could find us another site. He said there were plenty. I thanked him but my kids had already been traumatized and I had to get them home. The ranger had the right response, this wasn't an emergency or a crime like the Host was making it out to be, it was a simple misunderstanding. Oh and there was no way for them to reimburse me because my payment was in a lock box and it was after 5 on a Friday. So my conclusion and advice to campers is 1. I hope they don't keep that host and 2. If you are camping do not do the first come first served option even though the website tells you to. We were lucky to only live 2 hours from home but if you traveled further and then was treated like this it could be a real emergency and leave you scrambling to find a place to stay.

Basically no town in between will give you quarters.

And, if you're lucky enough to get a space at Ocean Views RV Park, you're definitely lucky. Across the street is the ocean. Ocean Views is a small, clean, quiet, and relaxing RV park in Smith River, California. Only 4 miles from the Oregon border. Across the street is the Pacific Ocean and her miles of amazing, beautiful, rugged beaches (see pics). A wonderful retreat from the craziness of life. Solid consistent Wi-Fi. We like to turn on a YouTube fireplace in the mornings & evenings. The NEW owners at Ocean Views are great!!! My wife and I are healthy adventurers and have spent the last few years traveling around in our motorhome and enjoying our beautiful country. We've been to over 40 states, and this is perhaps our very favorite destination!!! Plus, it's the first summer ever that we didn't need to turn on our air conditioner. Total comfort. Some affectionately refer to the area as the banana belt because of the consistent moderate year-round temperatures. Also, there is usually a nice, gentle breeze. AMAZING BEACHES: You can walk or drive to the Beaches. Fly kites. Wind surf. Collect shells, sand dollars, pretty rocks, build driftwood beach houses, or driftwood art. We actually walked to Oregon and back via the beach (4 hr round trip -- mucho fun - and we've done it twice so far). Or you can just do nothing. That's also fun. Sitting and watching the ocean is like watching the Earth breathe. But once you start exploring, you discover Sea Otters, lots of Seals, and Sea Lions. In the evening until sunset, you can watch the seals and pelicans dive near the shore for their fish dinners. Sunsets are often breathtaking. Lucky 7 Casino is about 2 blocks away. It's a nice, small tribal casino/ hotel with a good restaurant and bar. Lucky 7 gas station / convenience store always has the best fuel and propane prices. Brookings, Oregon is only about 8 miles North. Crescent City, California is only 18 miles South. The drive to either is always enjoyable. But watch out for deer & Elk. Brookings: Cool Marina area to explore. Fred Meyer is a great supermarket. Good prices and fun place to shop. Pretty town. Small movie theater (been there). Lots of shops and so many excellent restaurants. Le Flour de Mexico had delicious crab enchiladas & excellent margaritas. DQ (Dairy Queen) for a dip cone (yum). Wild River Pizza. Mattie's Pancake House (awesome online menu). And many more awesome eateries we still look forward to enjoying!!! Nice self-service car wash across from the DQ. We drive to Brookings to wash our Jeep and RV. It's funny to tell friends and family, "Yeah, we had to drive to Oregon to wash our Jeep." ha ha. Crescent City: Safeway with good cinnamon rolls, Walmart, Home Depot. Lots of stores, shops, excellent restaurants. Many fun places to eat. And also, a nice movie theater (been there). In addition to the usual theater snacks like popcorn, we discovered they also make fresh cotton candy & have pool tables. We enjoyed walking around the Marina and seeing the huge commercial fishing boats. Great fish and chips, and shrimp and chips at the Chart Room on the waterfront at the Marina. Nice beaches. And a working Lighthouse. Other stuff to do: Redwood forest. Kayak down Smith River, and so much more!!! All of the above creates a GOOD kind of to-do list. Just a few of the many reasons why we fell in love with the area and our base camp at Ocean Views RV Park. At the time of this writing, we started our third month!!! I highly recommend this campground perfect for those adventurers needing a place to rest their heads on a whim at the spur of the moment. That's how I discovered Grassy Flat Campground. I was driving along my cross country summer road trip and needed a place to crash for the evening. As usual and during so many times along my travels, I opened up the app on my phone called CAMPENDIUM! I also recommend to all those campers and tourists out there who appreciate sleeping among the great outdoors, definitely download Campendium. It's free to use and as long as you have cell phone reception...it'll always list the available campsites within any area in the United States. Campendium was my saving grace from my road trip!! Grassy Flat Campground was so convenient. When I arrived here over the summer, it was basically first come, first served. You don't need reservations. It was about 4pm in the afternoon when I found one of the last remaining campsites still unoccupied. Wow...I was grateful for this because along this area of Highway 199 and around the Redwood Forest section...I found accommodations to be few and far between. Lol, basically, I was grateful I wasn't crashing in my car for the night. And for me...I had just visited Crater Lake and was making my way south from Oregon. Grassy Flat was situated just outside the Hiouchi Visitor Center (about 14 miles away) great for starting my Redwood Parks itinerary. In terms of location, Grassy Flat Campground was ideal! Being just off the road of Highway 199 and not far away from the major town of Crescent City...it felt comforting knowing I was nearby a place to get gas, food and supplies continuing along my trip. Now to describe Grassy Flat Campground...it was scenic...right in the heart of the forest and woods! I felt like I was breathing in nothing but fresh air enjoying nature at it's finest! When pulling into my campsite...it had a fire-pit for barbecuing and a picnic table set beside random trees. I sincerely appreciated relaxing and taking in the authentic camping surroundings. It's simple $10 fee to camp for the night. You have to pay immediately upon choosing a campsite. You can pay by check if you don't have the exact amount of $10. Then just drop it into the safe/drop box. There wasn't a Camp Host on the grounds, but I guess they go by the honor system. They do offer portable toilets. Although the porter potties weren't the cleanest...they were certainly sufficient enough to make it through the night, lol. My one and only deterrent about this Grassy Flat Campground (and it's a small one) was that I didn't have cell phone reception...to sort of play on my phone and entertain myself. But it was still perfectly fine not using my phone as I easily sat back in my lounge chair and enjoyed being in the woods. Ya know, it's times like these when you go back to the basics, that I truly appreciated the simple things in life. So...not having cell phone reception was a blessing in disguise...a chance for me to reset my engine and put into perspective that I was about to witness some of the tallest trees in the world! Overall, I can't recommend Grassy Flat Campground enough. It's a perfect spot to rest for the night, especially for those getting ready to start their Redwood Forest journeys (assuming they're coming from the north and headed south, lol).

**Great location, disappointing stay**…read more I've stayed at the Beachfront Inn before, and its location is hard to beat. It sits right on the beach, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves is wonderful. Unfortunately, that was about the only thing I enjoyed this time. I decided to splurge on a suite, but I regretted it. For one of the more expensive rooms, it was in surprisingly poor condition: dinged furniture, rusty air vents, a gouged floor, ripped carpet, stained curtains, and sliding glass doors that were so cloudy I had to open them to enjoy the view. The bathroom appeared to have been recently updated, but I found long strands of hair in it. The service was disappointing, too. At check-in, I was told matter-of-factly, "We don't clean rooms during your stay!" I was there for the better part of a week. If I wanted cleaning, I had to request it a day ahead; otherwise, I could go to the front desk for supplies. Having worked in hotels, I understand that housekeeping costs money. Still, after booking a suite, I didn't expect to have to go downstairs for fresh towels or toilet paper. One afternoon, a nap was interrupted by loud talking outside my room. When it continued, I looked out and found a housekeeper talking on speakerphone. Checkout summed up the stay. The only thing I was asked was whether I wanted a copy of my receipt. There was no question about my stay and not even a thank-you. I'd enjoyed this hotel before, which made this visit especially disappointing.
