I love chocolate, and this place was a wonderful surprise on my weekend trip to Wisconsin. There were so many great looking options, and I bought a few things. They had a jar with samples. It was nice to get to a free sample! I got some creams (strawberry, raspberry, orange, and lemon) and they were amazing. These might be my new favorites (Fannie May creams used to be my favorite chocolate but they have a weird taste now). I got chocolate covered pretzel rod pieces, and a couple of on sale Christmas chocolates: bear claw and chocolate covered oreo's. I didn't know what a bear claw was (or if I'm calling it the right thing), but they said it was like a bigger turtle. It was delicous. The chocolate pretzles and oreo's were great too. read more

Small family owned candy store located in a building shaped like a huge Hershey Kiss. Known for their hand dipped toffee along with caramels and turtles. Small section featuring "Old Time" candy which brought back many childhood memories They also serve homemade ice creams as well as chocolate covered fruits and fudge. Over this past weekend on a day out road trip My Husband & I discovered Riverside Chocolate Store! I love homemade candy & sweets. I am 68 & this is the best homemade chocolate store I ever tried! The smell of homemade chocolate is so wonderful. It took a long moment for us to decide what to get? We did purchase milk chocolate & also each had a milk chocolate dipped Bananas. Wonderful & the best! Next time & yes there will be a next time & many times when we are in the area to try the homemade fudge. This store is pricey like everywhere else & some items are very reasonable. But we had top watch what we spent that day. I was hypnotized by the smell of fresh homemade chocolate & dazzled by so many choices! It was very hard for me to pick out a few things. Very friendly service as well. We did tell the staff it would take some time for us to decide. They understood too. So many delicious homemade goodies! Plus the regular manufactured candy little kids & adults love. Almost anything you can think of! really appreciate old school shops like this. It reminds me when I was a little girl as we had so many great homemade candy shops like Riverside. But sad to say over the years they started to close & vanish. Due to factory candy. Riverside is the real thing!! I could go here once a week if I lived closer. When you are craving something sweet or need a special gift this is the place to go in McHenry. It's right on a busy corner and the cone shaped building is hard to miss. It's pricey but has quite the selection of everyday and holiday candy. They also serve ice cream. Service was quick and friendly and the displays were mouthwateringly cute. read more

This place is SO good... I would say addicting! In the best way possible :). I always get the same thing- chocolate covered bananas and strawberries on a stick, usually covered in dark chocolate. What I love is that the fruit is not overly frozen and hard to eat, both the bananas and strawberries taste fresh and the chocolate accompaniment is soo smooth. Went after dinner, one day. This is my first time going. I was told chocolate covered bananas are the way to go. I choose mine with nuts and dark chocolate. Never did I Realize how delicious this could be. It was so refreshing . Only there was a really long line, but it did move really fast. There were many people. The staff did good about people trying to cut there were choices of candies, nostalgic candies, delicious handmade candy ice cream all kinds of treats. I did also buy some fudge chocolate cream filled things, chocolate, strawberries, and chocolate raspberry cups. The chocolate strawberries, real raspberry cups need to be eaten soon. The cream filled chocolate not so fast thoroughly enjoyed the fresh raspberries and fresh strawberries covered in chocolate For the cream filled chocolate bonbon not my favorite. I will not buy again. I did not try the fudge. I will do that today. I did not get any kind of receipt. I was curious what the breakdown of my bill was to know what I paid for which items that would've been interesting to see as the bill was pretty hefty for two chocolate with bananas 22 cups, two strawberries and a piece of fudge so know what I would pay next time or what I would choose to purchase based on price community tons and tons of I'm gonna post some men. We have been coming to this place for many years. To our disappointment we stopped in tonight to witness a bunch of unhappy, unwelcoming, unfriendly rude people. It certainly was freezing in there but you shouldn't take it out on your customers. I did see it is under new ownership and also see that they disabled google reviews because they are so bad and pretty much say the same thing. One would think they would be a little nicer with all of those bad reviews. It is unfortunate because the treats are wonderful but people will only tolerate rude, ungrateful behavior for so long. My review on google isnt coming up for some reason even though i posted it 3 days ago. So ill just post here too :) I just left this shop empty handed. Not because of the overpriced shit i was willing to buy, but because the skinny chick that was training the apparently new guy accused my boyfriend and of not standing in line because we werent standing at the ice cream freezer. Yes we followed the line to the cashier because the shop was filling up with customers by the second. Once the customer in front of moved we were questioned by the girl with "were you in line?" We said yes we were. Then says "were you called up?" Well excuse us for following the people IN FRONT of us! She goes back and forth with my boyfriend about called up and proceeds to say "well I'll help you this time but in the future wait" At this point I was done. I wasnt spending my money in a place that was more concerned about not looking stupid in front of customers by falsely accusing them than they are about respecting paying customers. But hey here's a tip for you, if you are apparently so fucking stressed at work that you want pick fights for people "not standing in line" why dont you be the leader that you think you are and get your ass from behind the counter and direct the line because clearly only standing against the damn damn cooler isnt enough when rush hour hits FYI we were not the only ones that stood closer to the registers. We drove past this place and the sign said chocolate factory so I said let's turn around and stop. I don't have a sweet tooth but I will definitely try something with homemade chocolate and something small. The place has to be the greatest sweet tooth place on earth because they have everything a sweet tooth could want from fudge, chocolates, ice cream candy etc etc. They have the old school candy like the dots on the paper and wax bottles filled with what ever is in them. This is just sensory overload when you walk in because you don't know where to start looking because sweets are everywhere. So fun to go here. Brings back memories of penny candies(that obviously are no longer a penny) and a true chocolate shop. I got white chocolate covered pretzels and the chocolate covered toffee with pecans on top. It was all very good, but seemed very expensive to me. I think if I were to critique, I would say there's too much chocolate in proportion to the pretzel snd the toffee. Kinda seemed like two to three times as much so you hardly tasted the other stuff. Remember the penny candy places prior to the 80's? Maybe even before 75! Not a penny anymore but so many candy options! I watched as a few kids picked out some items as their parents looked on and "approved". Lol. They have ice cream, will try that next time. They have coffee! There is a homemade fudge and chocolate Taj Mahal in McHenry, Illinois!! Sweet-toothed pilgrims, all roads end at the Riverside Chocolate Factory!! I have been coming to this old-fashioned chocolate shop for more than 10 years. Customer service has forever been top-notch, as has been the quality and range of goodies they offer. Prices are neither cheap nor overly expensive, simply reasonable and fair. At the corner of Chapel Hill Road and Route 120, this goofy, little, white building is a palace of sweets, worthy of all visits by all passers-by, even those needing sugar-free fudge and chocolates. There is ample parking on the side and back of the building. As soon as you swing open the door, you are visually bombarded by colors and shapes of a diabetic nightmare. Not a square foot of space is wasted. On the left and on the right of the door are racks of dozens of old-fashioned candies, from Fruit Stripe gum to Zotz, RingPops to those awful Necco wafers, the candy cigarettes to Mary Janes. Directly in front of you is an old-fashioned wagon with gift chocolates and other candies. Once you make it past nine-o'clock and three-o'clock, on the left you'll find an ice cream cooler and on the right you'll find a display case of homemade chocolates. I just love the art on the gift cards they sold which were done by a local artist. What a nice touch when you're trying to be unique with a gift in a flash! My nephew told them about his peanut allergy and they told him that due to possible cross contamination not to purchase anything. However she did mention that he could order ahead of time and let them know about his allergy and they would make a special batch with no possible contamination. I thought that was very kind and considerate of them to offer that as an option. I make it a point to stop here when I visit my sister in Woodstock (it's about a 30 minute drive). It's almost tradition at this point and I love this Candy store so much. The chocolate covered strawberries are my favorite. And my husband adores the orange peels. They have superb customer service. I did purchase some berries yesterday and when I went to eat today they were fermented, (had a carbonated felling). This was the first time that has ever happened. The berries were kept in the fridge over night. I called the store to let them know and the lady who helped me was polite and they offered to take care of it for me. This is how you do business!
