I do not eat a great deal of meat but when I do... I want quality. I was ill prepared for the wonderful experience that awaited me. The person that helped me, Brian, was terrific. He was super knowledgeable about products, preparation and taste. He even steered me away from higher priced items for lower priced things he thought I would like better. He was thorough and patient with my endless questions. He is very well suited to his job. They have all sorts of items in this quaint shop. They have cheese, jams, jellies, bread, eggs, kitchen equipment. From outside the shop, it does not appear to be very large inside and it isn't necessarily large.. just well packaged. The meat selection is vast... beef, pork, buffalo, chicken, lamb.... in every configuration you can imagine. They have steaks, ground meat, jerky. I learned so much just talking to Brian. There is ample parking and this store is located in a strip mall so there is easy access. Everything is sparkling clean and has a very nice atmosphere about the shop. We were told we would need to pay the processing fees and when the pig was ready for slaughter we called Santa Fe Trail Meats, arranged for the specific cuts of meat we wanted, including smoked pork chops, bacon and even suet. We were told we would be contacted when it was ready. This past Wednesday, 10/2, we received an message stating it was ready for pickup and would be there for seven days. Today, Friday, 10/5, he arrives to pick it up and it is GONE. Picked up by the business who we won it from and now 45 minutes away. This after my husband had driven over an hour in the opposite direction of work and home (and work is already 1/2 hour away). He's now on his way to pick it up from the company that we won it from in the drawing. Santa Fe Trail Meats...you SUCK. I hope we never have the misfortune of doing business with you again.

Hides are scalded and scraped, which we prefer to skinning. The owners source from local small farmers, even purchasing pigs from 4H students, so we are not only supporting a local business but local farmers and young farmers in the area as well. The pork is always of excellent quality. Highly recommended. We're fortunate to have an abattoir like Santa Fe in the area.

Located close to Oak Park Mall, this market is on the south side of the building that houses the Great Panda buffet restaurant. If you're driving south on Quivira you can't see it, but it's there! The store is bright, sunny and good-sized. As you can tell from the name, the products it carries are halal. Today the selection was a bit sparse, but they've got more stuff coming in next week so they should be fully stocked up! There's already a good selection of Middle Eastern groceries and spices, and a small meat counter where they do their own butchering -- there were whole carcasses of lamb hanging in the cooler, so I imagine lamb lovers will be able to get just about any cut they want at this market! They also carry goat and beef. The refrigerators had a nice selection of Middle Eastern dairy products and cheeses, plus frozen convenience foods, like kibbe. Also lots of frozen vegetables, like melokhia and artichoke bottoms, as well as filo and kataif doughs for Middle Eastern pastry-making! And fresh pita bread, in a variety of sizes! The grocery selection may be a little bit wider at the new (and also very nice) Shahrazad Market on Metcalf near 125th, but it'll be neck and neck once Al Habashi is fully stocked! This is a very welcome addition to the area -- Middle Eastern food sounds especially good right about now, in this summer heat wave! JoCo -- it's definitely not all "white bread" any more!
