A nice little grocer worth going out of the way for. They even had slices of king cake (complete with plastic baby) for Mardi Gras in the bakery section, which makes me so happy as someone who just moved here from the Gulf Coast. The deli and meat counter has a good amount of house-made dishes, from chicken salads to smoked salmon. The really huge, well-curated cheese section is worth it alone. This kind of counter is what I've missed after moving up here! Nice selection of grocery staples with an emphasis on local/regional producers where possible. There's a small but solid selection of natural health/beauty products and gifts, too. "Well-curated" is a running theme, as the beer section stocks a ton of nicer local brews I can't find at the major chains here. The staff is helpful and friendly without being overbearing. Service is second to none. Every associate I've ever encountered at RVC has been friendly and if they can't help they will find someone who can. We LOVE River Valley Co-op, both this location and the one in Easthampton. The store is spacious and so well-stocked with beautiful food and other goods. The people there are friendly and helpful. They have gorgeous plants and flowers for sale, ready-made foods as well as all kinds of natural foods including a great bulk section. Their selection of wines is also impressive. This is a really nice co-op. As with most co-ops, I love their emphasis on local food but I think they could go further to cut back on high priced items that most people don't need, like fancy cheeses, expensive olive oil and wines. They could reduce costs by not trying to offer everything, having fewer employees, not staying open as late. They don't need to offer prepared foods with counter service. I wish it were more like Trader Joe's or Aldi but with local products. read more

I sort of found this place by accident while driving around North Hampton. I saw all of the electric cars with "peace" and "save the planet" bumper stickers in the parking lot and knew I had to go in and see what it was about. If I lived here, I'd shop here all the time. There were a lot of local goods here. I picked up some local cider, as well as coffee and produce here. Every year I make it a point to get honeynut squash when I visit up north because for some reason it's next to impossible to get here in Florida, and they had them on sale so I took advantage and stocked up on that. They have a variety of foods for all diets. keto, paleo, vegan, you name it. Especially a variety of prepared foods which is reasonably priced and delicious. Will definitely visit again. read more

I found a plant, a Green Tirana Cactus at the co-op. Actually it's a succulent. The ones at the co- op were about 8 to 10 inches tall. I have a large one, 3' tall and over 30 years old. I had been searching for its name and found baby Tirana's at the co-op. read more

A rather crabby person posted that he would never shop there because it is a store that tells you what not to eat. Really? I often think about the vegetables we ate when I was a child in the 50s. Veggies came in cans with the exception of the only fresh veggies then found in stores: potatoes, carrots, celery, cabbage, bell peppers and lettuce. In season tomatoes brightened the aisles. Today, the veggies I serve include chestnuts, artichokes, asparagus, avocados, Swiss chard, squash. The Co-op's veggies are fresher than those at chain supermarkets and the prices are not necessarily higher. In general, the variety of fruits and veggies beats the competition. Neither is the meat more pricey. I like having a choice of meat wrapped in butcher paper and not offered on a styrofoam tray, bound in cling wrap. The Co-op's higher priced meats and seafood are those rarely seen at most markets. A winning product for me is milk sold in glass bottles. In general, shopping at the Co-op involves less plastic. In the 15 years I have lived here, I have, perhaps, bought milk in plastic three times and they were during my 1st month. The Co-op also sells the only yogurt I have purchased in years which is made in Hawley, Mass, as well as granola from the Berkshires. Much of its beautiful fruit comes from orchards about an hour's drive away. Yes, I do shop at other stores, because each market specializes in certain products, such as frozen foods. I use few, but, again, they largely come from a vendor that specializes in frozen food. read more

I was a customer and co-op member for decades. It was the only place I shopped. I even wrote 5 star reviews for them and then everything changed. Their business is not handicap accessible. I became disabled, which is when I noticed this issue. Within months of becoming disabled, I stopped being able to shop there. I let them know that my walker got stuck between the checkout counters and needed help from an associate to remove it. It was embarrassing. They said they'd resolve that issue and they didn't. They promised to always have a larger checkout area open- nope. For all their political correctness, they may want to focus on creating a shopping atmosphere that everyone can utilize. Their checkout and aisles are not big enough for walkers, much less wheelchairs. Then, there were a few employees who discussed very inappropriate things while I was standing waiting for my food to be made. One time, an employee discussed how he had gotten physically ill the night before in detailed description- this was during the height of the pandemic. Then, they changed their business model and many customers felt disrespected by their new practices. This was not the co-op where I once felt welcomed. Their loss because I'm now spending money elsewhere. I always like to support local businesses, but when a business alienates and disrespects a group of customers... they lose my support and business. read more

Not a very friendly produce staff. I was very disappointed with the appearance of the produce and the number of fruit flies buzzing all over the berries from Norse Farm. I would have bought some but. I so wish we had a great co-op like this near us. I don't get why Connecticut seems to be anti-co-op in the greater Hartford area. River Valley Co-op is one of the best co-op's I've been to because not only do they have excellent produce and other groceries, but they have delicious prepared food. The sushi and hot options are fabulous. They also have quality options in the beauty care and other household goods. I would almost exclusively shop here if I lived closer. read more

Food is exceptionally fresh and they have items the local chains don't carry. It's a small crowded store that gives it such a family feel. Everyone is smiling and happy inside. This coop is very well curated. While they are only the size of a medium small grocery store, they pack well selected, high quality offerings on every shelf. The produce is excellent, the cheese selection is great, and the meat/fish selection has great variety and options. I have not tried the prepared foods, but they smell delicious. One thing: you will pay dearly for the all of the well-curated items. There are bargains to be had, but overall prices are high. If quality/organic/local is more important than price, you'll love this place. If you have a budget...anywhere but here. We are members and can't wait until they open the new location which is closer to us. read more

If you find yourself seeking organic produce in this particularly off putting part of Massachusetts, you're better off going to the nearest grocer whose goal is to sell quality groceries objectively, and politely. The management and staff at River Valley are more invested in rudely forcing their sociopolitical symbols onto their customers than they are facilitating a pleasant shopping experience. River Valley coop and other local stores affiliated with them take pretentious to whole new level. It's more obvious now than it was 3 years ago, and hopefully people are taking note. It's unfortunate because if not for this very blatant commitment to a both nefarious and ridiculous agenda, it would probably be a pretty decent place to procure pretty decent goods. Whatever quality is available there fails to matter when upon entering customers are accosted with demands to perform a purely redundant act of mindless fealty to a nonsensical agenda. Pretentious behavior isn't good business strategy (just ask disney). If you possess critical thinking ability you're well outside the customer base River Valley seeks to attract. The food available there probably deserves 5 stars, but when you can't get two steps into the building without being accosted with demands to conform to a nauseating pseudo-ideology that in reality has nothing to do with anyone's wellbeing, it fails to matter. This method of conducting (ahem) "business" in the here and now essentially begs to be given one star reviews. read more

Regarding the quality of the food: I love it, it's consistently delicious and well priced. But on more than one occasion employees (not all but some) have been rude and unsettling; while I don't like leaving remotely negative reviews anywhere, being turned away at the counter is not something I ever would have expected and am both surprised and irritated by. I do recommend coming here, but I wouldn't want to misguide anyone expecting perfect service. - to add, I don't necessarily blame the employees, they appear understaffed and overworked but this is still not the experience i would look for in food service read more

My favorite grocery store, has been for many years, since well before I moved less than a mile away. Freshest food evah, especially produce, most of it organic (and well-marked so you know which is and which ain't). Nice staff, felt safe during peak Covid, lots and lots of local stuff. Prices a wee bit high but worth it for the quality. I do shop at Big Y too, but prefer RVM. The new store in Easthampton is bigger and fantastic, but the Northampton one is still my favorite. read more

This is wild ramps season and I was recently in New England looking for these rare and elusive distant relative of the onion. It is completely illegal to gather wild ramps in Quebec however it's still open season in the States. I've seen them from time to time at other food co-ops at this time of year so I was kind of happy to see some here. Mind you, they ain't cheap at $19.99/lb and the ones I saw in the store were not as fresh as they could be, probably a few days old. Even though I didn't buy any, I have to say this is a pretty cool organic supermarket. Prices are comparable to Whole Foods but it is a co-op and if you're a member like my friend who lives in the area is, then then it does come out cheaper than Whole Paycheck. Very clean, super friendly service and the quarried out eating area outside is a cool place to eat your prepared-foods counter lunch. read more

This food store reminds me a lot of Brattleboro Food Co-Op. Both are almost identical stores. They sell a lot of local, high end, food items and seem to cater to a slightly affluent clientele. Actually they cater to the Whole Foods clientele. But the prices are a little cheaper and the store is smaller in size. For a hippie conscience-type store, it's unfortunate they didn't use a "recycle and reuse" approach when building the store. It looks like they blasted a hole in the side of a mountain, tore up a stream, and built the building from scratch. I bet there's at least one existing building in Northampton that could have used a nice renovation. read more

My wife has tried to avoid him by going to another cashier. It's either this store or Whole Foods and we dont really enjoy giving our money to Amazon so its River valley for better or worse . have only been here once, i live in northampton and the one time i have been there it was so disgustingly dirty i would never go back, especially the hot bar with soups etc, most of the containers were almost empty with soup spoons that had been used for other soups, the counter was covered in dried soup and straw wrappers... secondly it is far to expensive, walked out and went to stop and shop which is always clean.... if you are going to offer a self serve hot bar then there should be an employee there the whole time restocking and cleaning surfaces and utensils etc, was seriously gross.... read more

Great co-op market located up the street from Smith College. I loved how fresh the ingredients are... I decided to cook dinner for my friend and I. He drove me to this market, so we went ahead and picked up some steaks to grill. I love their sausage selection from curry to smoked sausages. We went ahead and got one hot Italian smoked sausage to grill. I love all their organic produces! It's a clean market with a big a selection. All the ingredients are based on what's in season. So, I went ahead and grabbed some veggies to make a salad. Overall, this is a great market located in a really quaint town in Northampton. read more
