Parking was simple, and the lot was clean. No stray carts cluttering the place. Inside, the store felt tidy and well-organized, with prices clearly marked on the prepared meals. Not exactly cheap, but at least you could see what you were getting into. Shelves were well stocked, which made browsing easy. I went with a chicken-and-noodle dish that was decent, though a bit bland. Someone clearly has a fear of garlic. Still, the price was fair. Big E's Supermarket is a great supermarket. It has a lot more than BigY. They have brands that BigY no longer carry which you might like to find for a change. Their shelves are stocked all the time which I like. I know they are a smaller supermarket so that is why they don't have empty shelves but it's still nice to shop at a store with full shelves. read more

They do things right: It's been our consistent store for Covid and they've been really good about handling the crowds and orders for the pandemic. They're getting fresh local produce in still, and the store adheres to the CDC guidelines as best they can. While people still go the wrong way sometimes, the corridors are marked clearly, and employees wipe down carts and check for masks at the front door. They've begun taking returnables again, tho you are limited to how much you may bring in at a time. The cost is still a lot higher than the bigger chains, but the convenience isn't to be dismissed. So ... it's four years later, and I'm living in Northampton now, and the bus goes by Big E's. I am now once again a card-carrying shopper, to my inner delight (I'm just waiting for the first time I run into my ex and revel in the look of horror on her face), and come here once a month. I stand by my earlier review, and have a couple other observations: * About a year before I moved from Easthampton in 2000, Big E's made a deal with Tryptko's Meats (which was then closing its retail store) to carry its range of kielbasa and sausages. I love kielbasa, but probably was daunted at the high price of the Tryptko range. It's still high priced, but I broke down and got some. And it is SUPERB: the best kielbasa I have ever eaten, lean and tasty. I get a family pack every month. I'm as cheap as they come and I buy my groceries on food stamps, but this is outstanding value. * As I mention in the main review, they still carry Mr C's sauces, to my delight. But they also stock some other local brands. The salad dressing and pasta sauce line of the Red Rose Pizzeria in Springfield, for one, and I just picked up a couple to ship to an Agawam expat living in Texas who is a huge Red Rose fan. * They have a weekly e-mail circular that highlights the deals of the week, always useful things at very low prices. I'll mention one from this past week: a Family Meat Bundle that ran 15 lbs of meat (roasts, pork roasts, hamburg, chicken thighs, etc) for $40. This is a great price these days, and I cooked the beef roast right off: the meat was excellent. read more

Big E's Supermarket is a great grocery store located in Easthampton. The building itself is situated in the center of town, and we were amazed to see how many items this shop had on their shelves. The store was well organized with everything you would look for in a chain supermarket, and the nice thing about this store is the fact that they take pride in their goods. This store has a great bakery section as well as a solid wings bar. My other favorite part of the store is the meat section which has many different smoked meat items. This store also seems extremely community oriented which is great! The only issues was that their parking lot was a little tough to navigate, and as we were walking through we almost get hit by some people who didn't see us. It is just tight and people are in a hurry to get in and out. read more

I love this smaller local supermarket so hard. The bakery stuff is fabulous and even though the store is short on space, it has a thoughtful beer selection and a small, but good, produce selection. I am nostalgic for the days when I was little and my grandmother would take me to "Ed's Foodland" and I am glad that this market is still doing well as it's a huge supporter of local events and causes. Please note though: hold your breath, pray if you are religious, or generally just make a wish that you will make it into and out of the parking lot. It's a bit of a free-for-all and my heart gets all a-flutter every time I navigate it in my car. read more

I love doing my grocery shopping here. Not just because I can walk there and back from my apartment in about the same amount of time it used to take my to walk to my car in the giant megastore parking lots, but because having a local business to support is just... nice. For the most part, you won't have to lose too much if you shop solely at Big E's. They have a fairly decent selection of most things, fantastic smoked meats, a wonderful Bakery, and a nice beer and wine section. The prices are fair, not megastore prices, but not so high that they seem unreasonable. And during sales, you can sometimes do better than at their competition. The biggest downside is that sometimes finding exactly what you're looking for can be difficult. They'll have something one week, but it'll be gone forever the next. Also, some categories, especially ethnic foods, have very limited choices. On the other hand, you can find a lot of local, organic, and gluten free foods and snacks that are harder to find except at places like Whole Foods. Also, they will order something for you. Usually. If they can figure it out. Which they often do. Shop local! read more

Nothing like a neighborhood grocery! I love BigE's. They have a growing organic section that always has some fruit on sale; the fish is fresh and the coffee section is growing too! They now have local Pierce Brothers coffee, yummmy! The business supports local events and sports, thank you!! I love all the teens who work there, they get to know the customers and are friendly, look you in the eye and smile! Pretty great little grocery store right in the center of Easthampton. Big parking lot with lots of spots usually open and real close to door. Nice selection of pierogis, fresh and local cabbage, mayonaisses, cupcakes, etc. They even have my cats favorite canned food so that's great. The wife and I both REALLY love the fresh stuffed clams in the fish department. They're loaded with spices and bread crumbs so they're not too fishy which is huge. Most of they're other fish (haddock, tilapia) seems pretty fresh too. Doesn't come close to the Hamp stop n shop fish counter but definitely better than big y. Foodie tip: check they're website for great coupons (yesterday they had a coupon for free trash bag samples!!) and their recipes. Extensive recipe collection of everything you could imagine. I made the "hula sliders" last week and they were awesome. Who ever new pineapple jelly mayo existed??!! It does and it ROCKS. I made a huge jug of that to put on everything. Hamburgers. Crackers. I love Big E's Have been shopping at this store since I was a small child going with my grandmother to do her weekly shopping. Great customer service, employees are always helpful and willing to help to make your shopping experience a pleasant one. Meat department one of the best. You can't find what you are looking for in the large meat section see the butcher and he will have it. Fresh vegetables that actually look and taste like fresh vegetables. And their bakery is one of the best especially for the different types of breads and rolls. Always fresh and so good...if you are on a diet stay away from this section. Deli excellent with great specials. Prices are good for a small family run grocery store. You have to check this store out to believe that it is this good! read more

I've been saying for years I want to stop in this place and check it out. I'm always looking for a good grocery store even if it is a few miles out of the way. Based on the reviews I read I knew prices would be higher but I wanted to see for myself just how much higher. Came in on a Sunday afternoon which typically I would expect to be a quiet time of day in a grocery store. While not totally busy this place definitely had a good amount of people in it and a packed parking lot to show for it. Produce definitely 30 to 50% higher than other grocery stores but this time a year I'd rather go to farmers markets or farmstands anyway so I wasn't really interested in that. What I really wanted to know was the meat prices and how they compared. Definitely higher 1 to 2 dollars a pound on a couple of items. Granted a small non-chain store has to charge higher prices to keep up and this particular area definitely benefits from having a food store here but fortunately for me I don't live here and I can go to Stop & Shop anytime I want and pay a lot less. Deli was less than impressive and I found a prepackaged large garden salad for $7 that blew my mind. Anywhere else 3 to 5 dollars max for the size. Glad we stopped in but definitely won't go out of my way to come here. read more

Why wouldn't you shop here? Local business, an army of high school kids keep it tidy, the prices are great every day, shopping takes half as long as at the supermarket because it's small but you can still get everything you need. The down side is the meat department sucks and they could stand to offer some more gourmet and organic options, BUT THEY SELL BEER AND WINE HERE TOO! The Big Y in Southampton is the worst one in the chain and I only go if I need a decent butcher. Buy local (and independent!) and do your shopping at Big E's. read more

The meat and fish are not fresh: a while ago I'd have said, buy at your own risk, and prepare to cook and eat it the second you get home, because the next day, it will already be bad. But it's worse than that -- more than once now, it has been bad right from the store even though its expiration date says it's supposedly still good. Putrid scallops, straight from the store (located 5 minutes away. It's not as if the scallops endured a long car ride home.) So we stopped buying fish there, and now, the meat too... The last straw for us: today we bought and unwrapped some average, normal-looking, reddish ground beef. Once opened and pulled apart, we see it is *sickly* warm-grey-brown all the way through, except for 1/4" veneer of red that appears to have been coated all over the outside surface. It's dated to expire tomorrow, not last week. It's not on sale, it's not a 'manager's special,' and it smells wrong. Think about that for a sec: if you were to cook it, you can't tell at all to look at it whether that burger is completely uncooked inside. I tried to cook some as an experiment, just to look at it, and raw, it was indistinguishable from cooked. That's disgusting. Props to them for including some organic produce, dairy-free milk-substitutes, and a few gluten-free items. Maybe they should give up entirely on trying to sell meat and fish, and become something like Northampton's Cornucopia, instead (where we prefer to go)! That would thrive with local support: see how crowded the local organic-method CSA is, and how fast it's growing. Gratefully, we've just joined a meat CSA too. read more

Like several other reviewers, I've shopped at Big E's for many years. They have an outstanding meat section that includes Trytko smoked meats. The fish is very good, as is the deli section. The bakery has a very large selection with some very unique products available. The produce section is excellent, great variety and excellent quality. Customer service is good, generally friendly people. The only drawback I find is the parking. You need to be on your toes at all times in the lot so as not to get run down by an inconsiderate driver, no fault of Big E's, but be aware. read more
