Not much in the way of dead patches except where course turns to woods, kind of expected. Greens are in excellent shape, but I will say on my last round, LIGHTNING fast. Hole number 6 needs to be fixed. There is no way to stop your ball even if it lands in the fairway, from rolling all the way down the hill to the right. The grass there won't stop it, and it will likely end up lost in the brush by the small drainage creek. I don't like losing balls on good golf shots. I would really like to see railroad ties, or some kind of barrier installed to stop this. I'll hit from down there, fine, but losing a ball every time is not my idea of fun. This is why I can't give the course 5 stars. At least hole 2 has improved. Prices remain very affordable to ride 18. This is also a nice place to come and practice. They have a practice green, chipping range, and a full service driving range. I do wish they had a medium size for range balls, as the gap between the small and large bucket is vast. I often wish I had something in the middle. Overall, I consider this my "home" course, and it is the one I play most often as it's fairly easy to get onto. I recommend this for anyone that is looking for a decent challenge at a laid back course. This is not the place to come if you want premium amenities and rangers that police the course a lot.

The fairway is probably 60-70 feet below you and stretches out towards the tree line. The par 3 2nd comes back a little to your left, and then you see the third hole as it wraps around water just below. Absolutely stunning. It's a tough track and I would say is fun from every set of tees (black, blue, white, gold, and even the red tees). Water comes into play on about a dozen holes. Highlights are the first tee box/first hole (it's a reachable par 5), the third as it wraps around a pond, the second half of the par 5 5th hole, the eighth hole looks like it's on top of the world, the views from the 10th tee box, the thirteenth hole (a brute of a par 5), and some of the best par 4s in Virginia (holes 15, 16, and 18). I stayed in the smaller of the two lodges that overlook the 18th green. We had a suite with a master with a king and another room with two double beds. Lots of space, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a porch. It was also the cleanest room I may have ever stayed in. Some of the nicest views were from the porch that included the storm that rolled through at night and the fog that followed in the morning. There is only one restaurant on property and the food was excellent. Love that the dessert menu was never fixed. I had an ice cream cookie sandwich that was excellent. The people here truly make this place special. Whoever cleaned our room deserves a raise. Bo (the head pro) and Sherrie in the pro shop are maybe the nicest people I have met playing golf, and that is saying something. The wait staff and grounds crew were all extremely nice as well. I know there is a 5-star resort down the road that I visited for a bit, but I would much rather be here every day of the week. (Not saying I wouldn't turn down a free stay and play at the other place.) Needless to say this is now on my list for places to have a relaxing weekend getaway filled with great golf.

It's the only course in the Triad designed by Hale Irwin and one of only four Irwin designs in North Carolina (that I'm aware of). To date, I believe it's the only Irwin course I've played. Both my dad and a friend recommended this course to me. The course opened in 1995 and I think it's seen better days. When we played, the conditions were OK, not great. For about a $50 weekend daily fee, the course conditioning was average (perhaps at best) compared to other public courses I've played for about the same price. The course design feels relatively "open" in that there are a handful of holes that play directly alongside one another with little to no separation. Houses line several of the holes and 18 parallels the driving range. There are more typical, tree-lined, secluded-feeling holes too. All in all, I think the layout is interesting enough. The signature hole is probably No. 10 which is a longish par-4 featuring a tee shot over the property's biggest pond. It's a scenic hole as the pond extends all the way towards the green. Holes 2, 3, and 8 surround the course's smaller pond to the south. This is a par-72 course with five sets of tees. From the tips (golds), the course measures 6,778 yards with a 73.0/140 rating/slope. We played from the whites: 6,008 yards, 69.5/127. I found this course to be average in difficulty and shot a 93 (a solid round for me; I'm not good). My dad and I went off as a twosome, riding, on a Sunday. We pushed the group in front of us, but never thought the pace of play was too slow. Admittedly, I would've preferred we played faster, but there was only two of us. The course has bentgrass greens and they were in good shape. The fairways are Bermuda grass and they were mostly in fair shape. They've got a sizable driving range, two practice bunkers (a plus; some courses have none), a practice chipping green, and a large practice putting green. You hit off both mats and grass at the range. The clubhouse is basic and no-frills. Service was fine. Overall, I think this is an A-OK golf course and facility. I'm not sure I'd come back on my own, but I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting if one of my friends wanted to play here.

Emerywood is located inside the city and Willow Creek is located outside the city. Both properties offer most the same amenities such as golf, tennis, dining, and event space, but each is unique in its own way. This review is for Willow Creek where the club's 18-hole championship golf course is located (Emerywood has a basic 9-hole layout). I grew up learning how to play the game of golf mostly at Willow Creek. I took part in youth clinics and tournaments at a young age here. I was taught everything from learning how to properly repair a ball mark on a putting surface to hitting shots out of the sand -- things I still apply today. I still remember when the instructor put a $1 bill underneath our practice ball in the bunker to encourage us to hit behind the ball (and not rip the bill up). Today when I hit bunker shots, I often imagine a $1 bill underneath my ball to help with my sand shots. One of the assistant pros (I believe his name was Steve who later left for a job in Florida) really improved my driving ability by teaching me some important fundamentals when it came to my setup and swing. This was back when the clubhouse looked like a barn. After that, I had lessons from the current head pro and Director of Golf, Jim Brotherton. My dad and I have always been big fans of Jim. He's a super nice guy and has been at HPCC for as long as I can remember. He's an instructor who can get very technical. Do you remember that golf commercial where a guy is setting up to the ball and there are a gazillion things running through his head (e.g. keep your left arm straight, keep your eye on the ball, stay on plane, don't lift your foot, etc.)? That's how I felt one time on the range with Jim. During a lesson one time, I remember he could sense me thinking too much about my swing and had me step off the ball and relax. Jim caddied in the 2008 Masters for Drew Weaver, a hometown hero who had won the British Amateur the year before. I thought that was really cool. Willow Creek has excellent golf facilities. When I visit town, my dad and I always try to make it out to Willow Creek for a round or at least hit the range. Over the last 25 years or so, the course has almost always seemed to be in great shape. The course was designed by William Byrd who also designed the courses at the Country Club of North Carolina and Atlanta Country Club. I always found Willow Creek to be a challenging course. Its rating/slope is 73.9/139 from the tips at 6,972 yards. There are creeks, ponds, hills, and plenty of trees to navigate. Some of the more picturesque holes are No. 8 (par 3 over water) and No. 18 with the elegant clubhouse in the background. The course fairways and greens (Champion Bermudagrass installed in 2012) are consistently in excellent condition. The practice facilities are terrific. In addition to the all-grass range which has tools such as mirrors and swing plane guides, there is a short game facility (constructed in 2007 which replaced the old pool) and a separate practice putting green. The short game facility has a creek, two bunkers, and two greens with targets aplenty. It's nice. There are also several other little things about the course I like such as the container of cold bottled waters on the first tee and not one, but two compressed air guns players can use to clean off their shoes after a round. The staff is friendly and helpful. As for the food at Willow Creek, it's good too. :)

She provided PowerPoint presentations/ a visit to the Golf Shack / provided historical data about the course / a golf demonstrations. Our organization had an amazing time - we will definitely return. They also offer golf lessons for kids ages 6-12 years of age.

Everyone is always so welcoming. They have a driving range. There is a short game section and putting greens. I enjoy driving my daughter around this course in the golf carts. Never had an issue with their carts. There is a restroom half way through. Make sure you get the code for the doors off the carts. There are fences around the course for privacy. If the grill is open, they have food in the main office. The food has been good throughout the years. Make sure to ask about lessons and tournaments. If you are interested in getting your kids involved, they have First Tee and the PGA Jr Leagues.
