Course is beautiful! Golf carts are brand new. Staff are helpful and courteous. You can hit balls or hold the course. They also have club rentals. Highly recommend!

Holly Ridge features quality golf on a well cared for course that is especially forgiving to golfers who may struggle in the "hit the ball straight" department, as well as a pretty good restaurant on PAR with sports bars in this area. For the golf, Holly Ridge is a typical piedmont course in that there are several altitude adjustments in play throughout your round. Long ball hitters can find themselves at an advantage on holes where there is a descent to the green if they can hit over the hump. The courses main hazards are water which usually come into play off the tee as opposed to on an approach. Beginner golfers who struggle to get the ball in the air consistently might find this challenging. If left and right is your problem, you might find some forgiveness here, as there are usually neighboring fairways or sufficient rough to where finding an off-line ball is easy. There aren't many points on the course where the woods are close enough to make a ball hard to find. The greens in my experience roll pretty true, I have had some days where they are extremely fast due to how sun baked they are. Holly Ridge is home to my third best round, in which I shot an 80. They have recently installed GPS into the carts as well, so you'll always know your distance to the hole, which is really nice. Before that, it was hard to figure out your distance without an app, as there aren't many markers. That said, the GPS can be annoying, as it will yell at you and even disable your cart if you get too close to the green for too long. For the grill, more than sufficient for a ninth hole turnaround. Good hot dogs, ample beer selection at fair prices. Ordering is available from the newly installed units in the carts. If you're looking for a full meal, this is a great place, as they have a decent size menu featuring mostly sandwiches, chicken, salads, burgers, etc. It seems that locals come here just to eat, which by the food taste and price point, sounds good to me! Overall, I really like Holly Ridge. I've been coming here for many years, and have watched this course really come into its own after some renovations a few years back. Of course, the price went up a little with that, but I think the experience is still definitely worth the weekend rate. FORE!

In general the entire premises could use some TLC, and though I'm generally just one of those "give me an open field to smack stuff into" kind of guys, I can't help but feel that there are better fields to smack little round white balls into. From the entrance, the paved driveway is being gradually reclaimed by the surrounding woodland, and that can kind of be said in general of the whole place. The parking lot is more than large enough for the range, even on the nicest of days I would think. The clubhouse is no longer a clubhouse. Over the years it went from being walk-in and stocking a few items, even re-gripping clubs on demand, to just a window with an attendant, to now, no attendant. That's all honestly fine with me, the ball dispenser seems to work fine, even if giving it your money isn't the most intuitive thing in the world. Other than the ball vend-o-tron, you get a pepsi machine. Speaking of giving it your money, it's $10 for a medium bucket of balls currently, which is 70 balls. That's higher than most of the surrounding golf courses, particularly Jamestown, which has recently overhauled their range into a better experience on days with or without a mat. On the subject of the balls, they need to be purged. In my bucket, I got about half newer balls, and of the remaining half, balls that still had dimples but were covered in gouges and marks, to balls that have been weather-worn almost completely smooth. This item needs the most attention, as I'm not really getting any kind of accurate practice with balls that bad. On my visit, it was "mat-only" but i kind of get the feeling that is the default here now. The grass in front of the matted area is non-existent. The mats do not have tees for you to hit driver, nor are they the newer mats that you can actually slip your own tee into. The result is, people hit irons off the mat, then step forward onto the dirt to tee up for driver practice. On the plus side, there were more than enough tees for me to scavenge instead of using my own. The short game area has fallen into total disrepair, it's not even acknowledged anymore. On a nice spring day, at any given time i was there, there was probably about 10-12 people. Means this place makes a decent chunk of change, and someone just comes along now and then to tractor up the balls and refill the vend-o-tron. A pressure washer, new mats that are tee-able so they can re-seed the grass in front, and a bunch of new range balls would really bring this place back to prominence even if the short game area is never to be used again.

Surprisingly, this place is open! The phone number on yelp (as of March 2024) is not updated…read more They are open until 9 most weeknights. Balls are reasonably priced vs other places, grounds are maintained well. I wish all the lights worked at night (need to stick close to the entrance after dark), and wish the parking lot was lit as well.

This Colonial Country…read moreClub is not to be confused with other clubs around the country that share the exact same name. I believe the most famous Colonial Country Club is the one in Fort Worth followed by Cordova, Tennessee (outside of Memphis). Both have hosted PGA Tour events with the former also hosting both a men's and women's US Open major championship. While this Colonial Country Club in North Carolina may not have that kind of history or prestige, it's still a nice, private club nonetheless and I found it to be real treat to play on. My dad and I had planned to play one of our usual rounds at his home club, High Point Country Club (Willow Creek golf course). However, because of a tournament at Willow Creek, we played here instead because the clubs have a reciprocal agreement in place. This was my first visit to Colonial, but not for my dad. He's played Colonial several times over the years with other High Point Country Club members for various reasons, reciprocity being one and tournaments, I believe, being another. He and my mom have also attended holiday parties at the clubhouse for Thomasville Medical Center. The day of my visit, the clubhouse and course were setting up for a wedding. The wedding ceremony took place on the scenic lakeside 16th fairway and it appeared the dinner reception was inside the clubhouse: https://www.instagram.com/p/COWFnSjhkP5/. Before playing any "new" course (new to me), I like to do a little research. For Colonial, I checked out their website, Facebook, and Instagram. Having lived in Atlanta for the past 20 years, playing golf in metro Atlanta, and following many Atlanta area golf courses on social media, I noticed something immediately when I looked at Colonial's IG -- the club is now managed by Atlanta-based Bobby Jones Links. The dead giveaways were the pictures of the staff members who were awarded Clover Leaf (employee of the month) awards. They do the same thing at courses I follow in Georgia like Bobby Jones Golf Course, Legacy and Fox Creek, and Cobblestone. What a small world. In general, I think Bobby Jones Links has done a great job on the social media front. Their shirts look nice too. There are scenic views shortly after driving onto the property at Colonial. The course features three lakes (Upper, Middle, and Lower). On the front nine, starting with the 5th green, you get great views of Upper Lake. The 6th hole, par 4, has a blind uphill tee shot which I was not a fan of (I don't like blind shots). Upper Lake comes into play on the 8th hole, par 3, which measures 178 from the tips (blues). No. 9 is dogleg left par 5. On that hole, you'll want to err right on your drive because the fairway slopes right-to-left. I sliced my drive to the right side of the fairway and it rolled down to the center, putting me in great position for my next shot. As far as the back nine is concerned, I thought the tee box for 10 was a little confusing for a first-timer with the way the boxes are positioned between 12 green, the practice short game area, and 13 tee, plus the way the cart path goes. No. 10 is also a par 5 so it's hard to see exactly where you're supposed to hit. Anyway, that's just a minor gripe. The 10th green is tucked away in a corner so you do need to set yourself up for a good look by hitting a decent second shot. Holes 16 and 17 are some of the most picturesque and beautiful on the course. A par 4, 16 bends left around Lower Lake while 17, a par 3, is similar to 8 on the front, with a forced carry over water, but significantly less water to cover. The front ends dogleg left, the back dogleg right (par 4), both finishing at the clubhouse. Colonial opened in 1958. There are five sets of tees. From the tips, the course measures 6,809 yards with a 72.3/126 rating/slope. Not too long nor difficult, relatively speaking. When we played, the conditions were very good overall. Both the tee boxes and greens were in excellent shape. The greens were firm and fast. The only thing I didn't like about them was you could clearly see where numerous holes had been previously cut (just me being picky). Parts of some fairways could have used some work, but generally, there were no glaring issues maintenance-wise to me. It was what I expected out of a private country club in Thomasville. As far as layout and design, aside from the aforementioned water holes, I do think the holes are a bit simplistic and lack creativity or variety. Many of the fairways and greens are huge and there aren't a whole lot of trees separating holes. That makes Colonial very playable and more enjoyable for high-handicap golfers like my dad and me. Most holes do not have homes on them, so in that sense, this course feels more secluded and pure which I like. There's a pool, tennis courts, locker rooms and showers in the clubhouse, and two air blowers to clean your shoes. Service was terrific. The staff was friendly.

Emerywood is located inside the city and Willow Creek is located outside the city. Both properties offer most the same amenities such as golf, tennis, dining, and event space, but each is unique in its own way. This review is for Willow Creek where the club's 18-hole championship golf course is located (Emerywood has a basic 9-hole layout). I grew up learning how to play the game of golf mostly at Willow Creek. I took part in youth clinics and tournaments at a young age here. I was taught everything from learning how to properly repair a ball mark on a putting surface to hitting shots out of the sand -- things I still apply today. I still remember when the instructor put a $1 bill underneath our practice ball in the bunker to encourage us to hit behind the ball (and not rip the bill up). Today when I hit bunker shots, I often imagine a $1 bill underneath my ball to help with my sand shots. One of the assistant pros (I believe his name was Steve who later left for a job in Florida) really improved my driving ability by teaching me some important fundamentals when it came to my setup and swing. This was back when the clubhouse looked like a barn. After that, I had lessons from the current head pro and Director of Golf, Jim Brotherton. My dad and I have always been big fans of Jim. He's a super nice guy and has been at HPCC for as long as I can remember. He's an instructor who can get very technical. Do you remember that golf commercial where a guy is setting up to the ball and there are a gazillion things running through his head (e.g. keep your left arm straight, keep your eye on the ball, stay on plane, don't lift your foot, etc.)? That's how I felt one time on the range with Jim. During a lesson one time, I remember he could sense me thinking too much about my swing and had me step off the ball and relax. Jim caddied in the 2008 Masters for Drew Weaver, a hometown hero who had won the British Amateur the year before. I thought that was really cool. Willow Creek has excellent golf facilities. When I visit town, my dad and I always try to make it out to Willow Creek for a round or at least hit the range. Over the last 25 years or so, the course has almost always seemed to be in great shape. The course was designed by William Byrd who also designed the courses at the Country Club of North Carolina and Atlanta Country Club. I always found Willow Creek to be a challenging course. Its rating/slope is 73.9/139 from the tips at 6,972 yards. There are creeks, ponds, hills, and plenty of trees to navigate. Some of the more picturesque holes are No. 8 (par 3 over water) and No. 18 with the elegant clubhouse in the background. The course fairways and greens (Champion Bermudagrass installed in 2012) are consistently in excellent condition. The practice facilities are terrific. In addition to the all-grass range which has tools such as mirrors and swing plane guides, there is a short game facility (constructed in 2007 which replaced the old pool) and a separate practice putting green. The short game facility has a creek, two bunkers, and two greens with targets aplenty. It's nice. There are also several other little things about the course I like such as the container of cold bottled waters on the first tee and not one, but two compressed air guns players can use to clean off their shoes after a round. The staff is friendly and helpful. As for the food at Willow Creek, it's good too. :)

It's the only course in the Triad designed by Hale Irwin and one of only four Irwin designs in North Carolina (that I'm aware of). To date, I believe it's the only Irwin course I've played. Both my dad and a friend recommended this course to me. The course opened in 1995 and I think it's seen better days. When we played, the conditions were OK, not great. For about a $50 weekend daily fee, the course conditioning was average (perhaps at best) compared to other public courses I've played for about the same price. The course design feels relatively "open" in that there are a handful of holes that play directly alongside one another with little to no separation. Houses line several of the holes and 18 parallels the driving range. There are more typical, tree-lined, secluded-feeling holes too. All in all, I think the layout is interesting enough. The signature hole is probably No. 10 which is a longish par-4 featuring a tee shot over the property's biggest pond. It's a scenic hole as the pond extends all the way towards the green. Holes 2, 3, and 8 surround the course's smaller pond to the south. This is a par-72 course with five sets of tees. From the tips (golds), the course measures 6,778 yards with a 73.0/140 rating/slope. We played from the whites: 6,008 yards, 69.5/127. I found this course to be average in difficulty and shot a 93 (a solid round for me; I'm not good). My dad and I went off as a twosome, riding, on a Sunday. We pushed the group in front of us, but never thought the pace of play was too slow. Admittedly, I would've preferred we played faster, but there was only two of us. The course has bentgrass greens and they were in good shape. The fairways are Bermuda grass and they were mostly in fair shape. They've got a sizable driving range, two practice bunkers (a plus; some courses have none), a practice chipping green, and a large practice putting green. You hit off both mats and grass at the range. The clubhouse is basic and no-frills. Service was fine. Overall, I think this is an A-OK golf course and facility. I'm not sure I'd come back on my own, but I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting if one of my friends wanted to play here.
