I live on the north side so don't visit often and this is not my choice of LGS…read more But over the holidays my family was visiting and Taps was close to other errands so we thought it would be good to check out. They have a great selection of games: trading cards, board games, and paintables. And gaming accessories. Building is not wheelchair accessible. The gaming area is upstairs and the sales floor is cramped. I found the customer service to be just.. not helpful? They weren't rude but they certainly under explained every step of the process. I have shopped here twice and and the same odd customer service experience both times. On one visit, I traded one 1 Magic the Gathering card for in-store credit and was asked if I had done an online trade-in order. Their website does not mention that trade-ins should be done online prior to visiting the store so while at the store, I placed an online trade-in via their website and traded in the 1 card. The associate took the card to the back to the card appraiser. The appraiser came back out a few minutes later with another card for another customer and gave the associate at the till the thumbs up on my trade-in. I had requested an in-store credit, so was expecting a gift card or something physical to represent that. So the associate and the till and I just stared at each other for the most awkward 20 seconds of my life until I asked how I get my in-store credit and he finally explained to me that the credit goes onto my email on file. Ah! Thank you for telling me! A few days later I receive an email asking about my trade-in because my sell list didn't match their records. It was cleared up no problem with a few emails back and forth, but makes for another awkward customer service experience. I have placed 2 online orders, both with errors. The first was a couple dollars difference and the second was less than one dollar difference. Not a huge deal but annoying since I didn't notice until I was home. I will double check any future orders while in store.

I had a really great experience as a player sort of new to MTG and making their own decks. There…read moreare very friendly and helpful staff that helped me figure some things out. The card value also seems great, I bought a "heavily played" card for a heavily played price and I almost feel bad, because the condition of the card seems way better than heavily played. It's just fun to hang out there for a bit as well!

In Nov '19, I ordered an Olhausen pool table, a California Table poker table, and several…read moreaccessories from Jay MacDougall. I paid in full up front -- $12500. Delivery was promised in Jan or Feb. For the first 10 months, all I had to show for my order is a string of e-mail correspondence with Jay giving me one reason after another that the order had not arrived. Jay didn't initiate contact with me to give updates. I always had to initiate. In Oct '20, I got the pool table but the rest was delayed. The dart cabinet was made by the same company yet Jay claimed that they forgot to include it when they shipped the table. Come on! Who does that? I contacted the manufacturer of the poker table myself. They told me that my order was placed in Sep '20. The last delivery update I got said end of November. Well, here we are in mid December and nothing. Hey, I get that the coronavirus situation has complicated the manufacturing and transportation chains and that could very well be some of the reason for my delay. It is quite clear, however, that my order was not placed with the manufacturers until long after I paid and Jay pocketed my cash in the interim. I saw a negative review on another review site that was eerily similar to mine. When I asked Jay about it, he claimed it was false that the guy was an "idiot". Well, I heard from that guy because I left my contact into in that review and his story is very credible. I can assure you that none of this story is invented. I'm not a plant or a fake reviewer. I have a long e-mail chain that corroborates all of this and I will share it with you if you e-mail j er e m y at n ew top i a dot ca. In Nov '20, I logged a complaint with the BBB. Here is a snippet of his response: "... has a business of his own, I won't divulge the name here you can look it up for yourself if you like. [I actually don't own a business] Every single person I've discussed this situation with has remarked they'd be happy to cause the same problems and attack his business through poor reviews and retaliate through all social media means possible ... Hiding behind a computer screen like a weasel ... This creep has tried to disrupt our business, ruin our reputation, and has gone so far as to interfere with our manufacturers themselves and our schedules, and all he's accomplished is antagonizing everyone involved." Look. I'm just a consumer that believes that when you pay for something, you should get it. Call me crazy. If I get good service, I recognize it. If I get bad service, I'm going to call it out. Jay seems to believe that providing poor service and exhibiting fraud-like behaviours should be consequence free. Man, if you don't want bad reviews, treat your customers right! If you are considering buying from Rec World, think twice. At the very least, do not pay in full up front. For an interesting comparison, take a look at the reviews for the Rec World store in Calgary. The reviews are much more positive and the owner responds to most of them, even the negative ones. Quite a contrast.

This is a really fun cafe and something a little different too. It has coffees, and drinks…read more(including local brews by Alley Kat) as well as food options, but the main draw for this cafe is the board games. For $5/person you have unlimited access to, well there were probably close to a hundred board games if not more, for the durations of your visit. Everything is done on a tab, so you go up and order your food and drinks, let the staff know how many people will be at your table, and then you settle the tab when you leave. That way you don't have to worry about someone taking over your property on Park Avenue during an intense game of Monopoly. I met a couple of friends here and we played several games. First up Jumanji, because I am a child of the 90's and that just sounded awesome. Turns out a board game based on a movie based on a book about a magical board game that can cause an elephant stampede or trap you in the jungle isn't as exciting as it seems. There was a secret decoder in the game that I remember from other 90's board games (like Clue Jr), but the game itself was pretty boring. To be fair it's aimed for those 8 and up, so I'm a bit above that target audience. After that wholesome goodness we needed to go in the other direction, so we played Cards Against Humanity. Or I think we played Cards Against Humanity. There were's directions in the game box so we googled how to play and then kind of made up our own rules. I don't know who won, but it was funny. After humour it was time for a depressing game of Life (at least for me - I lost on all accounts). I think a few of the pieces (some Life tiles for sure) may have been missing from this game. It's bound to happen in a place like this, pieces go missing, break, get torn (hopefully from competitive game use and not someone intentionally trying to be a jerk). That $5 admission fee helps to repair old games and buy new ones, but things aren't perfect. Finally we played Mad Gab, the game where you're reading a nonsensical phrase from a card and you're saying something legit, but you don't know what it is (you have to guess). Turns out my friend had this game as a kid and she whooped us with it, so I know what game I'm not playing with here next time I come here. And yes there'll be a next time, because I think this is a great little cafe, and I love the fact there's somewhere in this odd industrial neighbourhood to grab some food and drinks, and have some fun.
