I have been here twice, and each time has been a fantastic experience. This is a much better restaurant than its appearance. From the outside, it looks like your typical chinese takeout, but the food and the service far surpasses any chinese fast food I've had. This is not Panda Express, the food quality is much better. There's a lot of variety and the food itself is flavored extremely well, and the best part is there is no MSG used. The lunch special is good value and the portions are quite good. If you decide to eat in, there's plenty of seating inside and outside. The line for the lunch combo during noon can get long, around 5-10 minutes wait at times, but it's sporadic, you never know when the wait will be shorter or longer. We got the black bean fish, eggplant tofu, teriyaki chicken and BBQ pork, all of which was delicious. The lady in front is pleasant, and friendly. At the current price of the lunch specials, it is one of the best values in Lake Forest and we'll continue to come here regularly because of it.

Been coming here for years and the food is always the best in the area. Lunch is always hot and ready.

Rising Sun is a hidden gem in the Foothill Ranch Marketplace, next to the KD's donuts. Many have driven passed it on the way to/from Ralph's supermarket without paying any attention. It is where I go for decent Chinese food in this area. Usually we would order the house special fried rice, garlic eggplant with tofu, a meat dish, and a soup. We are usually satisfied when we put chopsticks down. They have a few lunch special items available between 11am and 3pm. After being closed on Sundays for some time, Rising Sun is now open for dinner on Sundays, 3:45-8pm. It's a move I like very much. It now also has tables for dine-in customers but we usually order our food to go, a leftover habit from the pandemic days. For anyone new to the Rising Sun, they identified your to-go order not by name but your phone number. One last thing for the local folks, Rising Sun accepts Shop & Dine Lake Forest gift cards, so support our local business when you are in the mood for Chinese food.

I have the gift vouchers that can be used in 99 locations in Lake Forest, CA. I noticed that Rising Sun Chinese food restaurant is one of them. After visiting the OC library at Foothill Ranch, I took my family to dine in on Saturday. It is the small business and I like to support because the front desk staff is very friendly. We ordered the following items for 5 people (3 adults and 2 kids). Thai Curry Chicken ($13.65) with rice Happy Family ($14.95) with rice Salty & Pepper Pork Chop($14.95) with rice We waited 20 minutes and were surprised to see the big portion size of Salty & Pepper Pork Chop. My kids liked Thai Curry chicken a lot. We were satisfied with the entrees we ordered. The only thing I don't like is that the restroom is not open for the customers. If you would like to buy lunch or dinner to go , Rising Sun is a good one to begin with. Just give it a try with 3 entrees I mentioned above. You won't feel disappointed. Will go back definitely.

Rising Sun Chinese Food is located in Foothill Ranch. They offer all the standard Chinese dishes one would come to expect at a Chinese dining establishment. The reviews were all over the place for this restaurant, so I had to see for myself how it was. Hot & Sour Soup ($6.45) - 32 oz - This soup, prepared with tofu, wood ear mushroom, and bamboo shoots, had a nice kick to it and was such a great deal! I would definitely get this every time I come here, it's that good! Orange Chicken ($8 - lunch) - The lunch portion comes with steamed rice and an eggroll (vegetarian). Sadly the eggroll was soggy and a major let down. The chicken was slightly crispy and was cooked in a sweet orange sauce. It was ok taste wise, but not as good as Panda Express or another Chinese restaurant I frequent. Hong Kong Style Fried Chicken ($10) - This was one of the best things I ate here. The chicken was crispy and delicious! A sweet plum dipping sauce enhanced the flavor profile. Mongolian beef ($9 - lunch) - lunch - This was the most disappointing dish I tried here. Although the beef was tender, it was tasteless and oily. Spicy garlic fish ($11) - I'm not sure why any of the dishes are called spicy here because they are extremely mild. However, I really enjoyed the taste of this dish with garlic flavor and delicious stir fried fish. Overall a few dishes really impressed me: the hot and sour soup, HK style fried chicken, and the spicy garlic fish. I'd pass on the Mongolian beef, orange chicken, and egg rolls. It's easy to see why some people are raving about this place while others were disappointed. It really depends on what you get here. At least the prices are reasonable.

I ordered the broccoli beef, orange peel chicken, and the Shanghai red braised pork belly, and honestly there wasn't a single miss. The broccoli beef was tender and perfectly sauced, not greasy at all. The orange peel chicken had the right balance of sweet and citrusy with a little kick, and the pork belly was the star. So rich, melt in your mouth, and packed with deep savory flavor. All of the entrees come with rice, which makes it even better for sharing or leftovers. I also ordered their house made soup dumplings and they were incredible. Thin skins, juicy inside, and full of flavor without needing much extra sauce. You can tell this is a place that knows what they're doing. The food speaks for itself and I'll absolutely be coming back to try more dishes. Highly recommend if you're looking for quality Chinese food in the area. I loved how it was so clean inside and the staff was so helpful when giving me suggestions from the menu! PROS: - Price was very reasonable for the volume offered during this economy. - I ordered the House Special Egg Foo Young since someone else on Yelp recommended it, and it was what surprised me. Although the dishes weren't as visually appealing as the House Special Egg Foo Young, the taste was actually quite delicious. CONS: - Nothing really stood out on the negative side to report. - Wished that there were more eggs in the Egg Foo Young, but in this economy, it's understood that fresh eggs aren't cheap. The crispy tofu was honestly my favorite simple but really good, you can never really go wrong with fried tofu. The beef with scallions was pretty spicy, which I personally liked. The pork belly though was disappointing to the point that we didn't even finish it. The steamed fish was decent, but there were a lot of big bones so you really have to be careful while eating it. It was also pretty expensive, around $55, and the portion size was just okay. The minced pork fried rice tasted like your typical fried rice, nothing memorable. The place gets really packed during dinner time, so expect a wait and maybe come before you get super hungry. It was also kind of hard to get the servers' attention, probably because they were busy with how crowded it gets. Overall, I'd say it's mid, especially for the price.

Shanghai style smoked fish ($16.5) - This fish isn't smoked, rather it's deep fried twice creating an extremely crispy exterior and is dipped in a sweet soy sauce. It's a unique tasting appetizer, perfect for sharing. Sauteed string beans with garlic ($13.5) - These beans had a slight crunch and are a great veggie option. Steamed fish and shrimp dumplings ($14.50 - 8 pieces) - This is a good option if one is looking to get their dumpling fix. Steamed veggie dumplings ($14.50 - 8 pieces) - This is another good dumpling option that tastes great. However the dumplings aren't that filling themselves. Braised beef shank noodle soup ($16.50) - Made with braised beef, pickles, cilantro, bok choy, green onions, noodles and a savory and spicy beef spot, this dish is perfect for a cold day. Crispy beef rolls ($15 - 6 pieces) - This consisted of tender beef, cucumbers, scallions, and a savory sauce all rolled in a crispy and flaky scallion pancake. It's one of my favorite items here. Kung pao chicken ($16) - This stir fried dish is prepared with tender chicken, peanuts, and spices and is my favorite dish here. Sweet and sour chicken ($16) - I was impressed with the quantity of chicken in this dish. It was perfectly prepared with a crispy batter and a tangy and sweet sauce that really hit the spot! Pineapple beef ($16) - This consisted of tender and thin pieces of beef stir fried with some pineapple and is another solid dish to get here. Chocolate mochi xiao long bao ($11 - 5 pieces) - These chewy dumplings had a wonderful chocolate filling. Rose flavored red bean buns ($14 for 3) - I felt these were pricey but they had a good amount of filling and the bao bun was soft and fluffy. Golden egg custard buns ($13.5 for 3) - These are similar to the red bean buns, except the inside has egg custard. I really wish they doubled or tripled the custard, because the amount they give is miniscule, and it's for that reason I would pass on these. Overall I'm impressed with many of the items here and the pricing is reasonable. Even though I've tried so many dishes here, I wish they had even more offerings that didn't have pork. The crab xiao long bao also tasted good, but several dumplings in the box had broken open during delivery, so all the soup leaked out (see photo). Since my tastes aren't quite as adventurous, we ordered the Sichuan sweet and spicy chicken and the mapo tofu. I wasn't sure what to expect from the chicken dish, but it reminded me of a chicken in garlic sauce. The portion was very generous. full of meat, and not very spicy at all. Likewise, the mapo tofu wasn't that spicy but it had a lot of Sichuan peppercorns, which provided that mouth-numbing feel. The serving was large enough that we had leftovers (and the chicken dish, too).
