I have been here twice, and each time has been a fantastic experience. This is a much better restaurant than its appearance. From the outside, it looks like your typical chinese takeout, but the food and the service far surpasses any chinese fast food I've had. This is not Panda Express, the food quality is much better. There's a lot of variety and the food itself is flavored extremely well, and the best part is there is no MSG used. The lunch special is good value and the portions are quite good. If you decide to eat in, there's plenty of seating inside and outside. The line for the lunch combo during noon can get long, around 5-10 minutes wait at times, but it's sporadic, you never know when the wait will be shorter or longer. We got the black bean fish, eggplant tofu, teriyaki chicken and BBQ pork, all of which was delicious. The lady in front is pleasant, and friendly. At the current price of the lunch specials, it is one of the best values in Lake Forest and we'll continue to come here regularly because of it.

Been coming here for years and the food is always the best in the area. Lunch is always hot and ready.

Rising Sun is a hidden gem in the Foothill Ranch Marketplace, next to the KD's donuts. Many have driven passed it on the way to/from Ralph's supermarket without paying any attention. It is where I go for decent Chinese food in this area. Usually we would order the house special fried rice, garlic eggplant with tofu, a meat dish, and a soup. We are usually satisfied when we put chopsticks down. They have a few lunch special items available between 11am and 3pm. After being closed on Sundays for some time, Rising Sun is now open for dinner on Sundays, 3:45-8pm. It's a move I like very much. It now also has tables for dine-in customers but we usually order our food to go, a leftover habit from the pandemic days. For anyone new to the Rising Sun, they identified your to-go order not by name but your phone number. One last thing for the local folks, Rising Sun accepts Shop & Dine Lake Forest gift cards, so support our local business when you are in the mood for Chinese food.

I have the gift vouchers that can be used in 99 locations in Lake Forest, CA. I noticed that Rising Sun Chinese food restaurant is one of them. After visiting the OC library at Foothill Ranch, I took my family to dine in on Saturday. It is the small business and I like to support because the front desk staff is very friendly. We ordered the following items for 5 people (3 adults and 2 kids). Thai Curry Chicken ($13.65) with rice Happy Family ($14.95) with rice Salty & Pepper Pork Chop($14.95) with rice We waited 20 minutes and were surprised to see the big portion size of Salty & Pepper Pork Chop. My kids liked Thai Curry chicken a lot. We were satisfied with the entrees we ordered. The only thing I don't like is that the restroom is not open for the customers. If you would like to buy lunch or dinner to go , Rising Sun is a good one to begin with. Just give it a try with 3 entrees I mentioned above. You won't feel disappointed. Will go back definitely.

Rising Sun Chinese Food is located in Foothill Ranch. They offer all the standard Chinese dishes one would come to expect at a Chinese dining establishment. The reviews were all over the place for this restaurant, so I had to see for myself how it was. Hot & Sour Soup ($6.45) - 32 oz - This soup, prepared with tofu, wood ear mushroom, and bamboo shoots, had a nice kick to it and was such a great deal! I would definitely get this every time I come here, it's that good! Orange Chicken ($8 - lunch) - The lunch portion comes with steamed rice and an eggroll (vegetarian). Sadly the eggroll was soggy and a major let down. The chicken was slightly crispy and was cooked in a sweet orange sauce. It was ok taste wise, but not as good as Panda Express or another Chinese restaurant I frequent. Hong Kong Style Fried Chicken ($10) - This was one of the best things I ate here. The chicken was crispy and delicious! A sweet plum dipping sauce enhanced the flavor profile. Mongolian beef ($9 - lunch) - lunch - This was the most disappointing dish I tried here. Although the beef was tender, it was tasteless and oily. Spicy garlic fish ($11) - I'm not sure why any of the dishes are called spicy here because they are extremely mild. However, I really enjoyed the taste of this dish with garlic flavor and delicious stir fried fish. Overall a few dishes really impressed me: the hot and sour soup, HK style fried chicken, and the spicy garlic fish. I'd pass on the Mongolian beef, orange chicken, and egg rolls. It's easy to see why some people are raving about this place while others were disappointed. It really depends on what you get here. At least the prices are reasonable.

I ordered the broccoli beef, orange peel chicken, and the Shanghai red braised pork belly, and honestly there wasn't a single miss. The broccoli beef was tender and perfectly sauced, not greasy at all. The orange peel chicken had the right balance of sweet and citrusy with a little kick, and the pork belly was the star. It was $39, but had probably 8 different types of fish, each with multiple pieces. They all tasted super fresh. I recently left Oahu, and have been fully unimpressed with sushi at an affordable price on the mainland. This was it! Sure, it wasn't rolled or had nori, but it hit the spot. The prices are amazing for what you get. The place is amll, maybe seats 5 parties, though they have some out door seating. It's in a very unassuming strip mall in Foothill Ranch of all places, but the place is immigrant, Japanese owned, and doesn't have a lot of staff - husband in the back, wife in the front. Expect things to take a little time, but the service is great, the vibe is casual, and the food is GOOOD. I noticed out of the four parties, half were Japanese speaking. My 74 year old dad was craving some good old-school Chinese American food for his birthday. We've…read moretried so many places in south OC nothing has come close to Chinese takeout in the 90s. We've tried hole in the wall restaurants and fancy restaurants. This is what we were looking for and our search is over. This place is amazing. I placed an online order and picked it up 30 minutes later. The order: orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, garlic shrimp, chow mein, fried rice, and egg rolls. And everything was fantastic. Very kind staff and reasonably priced. The inside is cool and clean. I'm so thankful that my dad got what he wanted for his birthday and we'll definitely be back. Thank so much!

PROS: - Price was very reasonable for the volume offered during this economy. - I ordered the House Special Egg Foo Young since someone else on Yelp recommended it, and it was what surprised me. It was both visually and culinarily pleasing. This is a definite must try. - I also ordered the House Special & House Special Beef. Although the dishes weren't as visually appealing as the House Special Egg Foo Young, the taste was actually quite delicious. CONS: - Nothing really stood out on the negative side to report. - Wished that there were more eggs in the Egg Foo Young, but in this economy, it's understood that fresh eggs aren't cheap. CONCLUSION: If you've got a craving for Chinese food on a tight budget, this venue is a definite must try!

They no longer give me a menu anymore, because they know what my order is. I always ordere Halves (shabu & grill) with spicy tonkatsu broth, creekstone short ribs for both shabu and grill, condiments, and 3x hot drops, The meat quality has never disappointed me. The rice is always cooked perfectly. The sauces are always on point. The dining area is always clean. I have no complaints about this place whatsoever. Actually I do! My complaint is they are closing on 04/30/26. I am sad that there will be no more Halves. I hope they reconsider opening another location. But if they don't thank you for always providing great service and great food. I will truly miss this place and I will continue to go until the doors are officially closed.

I love the option of being able to grill your meats while also doing hotpot. They offer Japanese appetizers like takoyaki. You can opt to just do the hotpot or the grill or do halves. Note that this isn't AYCE. You basically pick a broth, choose your shabu meat then your grill meat, and any add-ons. Rice, udon, mushrooms, cabbage, broccoli, squash, and tofu are included in the set. Dipping sauce options as well. Good quality meats. Although on the pricier end, we enjoyed our meal here. Flavors hit the spot, service was great.
