Been visiting here for over 2 decades as it has changed ownership. (Some Great and some not so). A new family owns it and cares about their food! They have embraced the internet and take online orders and use the popular delivery services. Now to the food! Excellent!!! They do mostly made To order dishes so everything is hot and fresh. Have visited them 4 times in the last few weeks and can say everything has been good and consistent. Good Chinese has returned to Foothill Ranch!!! My only negative is that the interior needs some updating but if it's mostly delivery and takeout then that isn't where I'd spend my initial investment money either... Update. Ordered take out several times or over the last 2 months during the covid event. Everything is still hot fresh and delicious! The kids are hooked on the Singapore noodles!! It's a late Tuesday afternoon, approximately 4:00pm. I really wanted some Chinese food. I googled chines restaurant near me, Rising Sun Chinese was the closest to me and that is the restaurant I went to. I was the only person there and I was able to order right away and I ordered the BBQ pork and the hunny glazed shrimp and my food was ready in 15 minutes. The honey glazed shrimp was good, but the BBQ pork was salty, totally dry and really chewy and smelled weird. I tried to force myself to eat it because I don't like wasting food or money. Born and raised in SoCal and growing up in the San Gabriel Valley area for over 30 years, I've had my share of experiencing different Chinese styled dishes from a variety of restaurants from fast-food to traditional dine-in experience. My wife and I have relocated, bouncing between Lake Forest & Foothill Ranch for the past 3 years, and sadly the food options in these two cities are quite vanilla unless we make a 30-40 min drive out to Irvine, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, or Westminster. We pass by "Rising Sun" all the time when grocery shopping, but never got a chance to try their food till recently. We decided to call in for take-out, ordering 3 dishes for dinner. When we came home with our food, we were pleasantly surprised that rice was included with our order for no additional charge. Surprised because I'd expect to get that in 626, but not here in Lake Forest / Foothill Ranch (IYKYK). Anyways, the food was delicious, we got what we ordered, portion sizes were generous, the lady who took our order over the phone was polite and also informed us that the order would take ~30 minutes. Thank you Rising Sun for allowing my wife & I to enjoy a nice dinner that reminded us of our family & childhood. I ordered some food from Rising Sun Chinese Food, on Portola Parkway in Foothill Ranch. The #33 Cashew Nut Chicken; zucchini, carrots, cashews, with steam rice. To drink I had a diet soda to balance the meal. I also ordered; eight vegetable egg rolls, they were lightly crunchy outside, with a soft & creamy vegetables inside, and they were outstanding! The store was nice and clean, and the Chinese chef of 20 years is a great cook, and was nice and friendly. I had ordered takeout so Diana and I could share that delightful dinner together! We've found our go-to Chinese restaurant! We drove by so many times, but never stopped in to eat. So glad we finally decided to try them out. When you arrive there is a line of tables blocking you from going much further into the shop. There's also a ice water dispenser for free water during this heat wave! A cashier will then greet you and offer you a to-go menu on the table. You place your order from there and they take credit, which you will have to verbally tell them out loud. If you're not comfortable doing this, I suggest calling them ahead of time and placing your order and paying for it over the phone. They will then make your food fresh so depending on how big your order is, it might take a while. I definitely do not mind for freshly made food. The cashier will then drop off the food, ready to go, on the line of tables and you pick up. Tip jar is also there, but I didn't have cash to drop off and their credit payment was contactless. So keep that in mind if you want to give them a little extra. I certainly will! On to the food. We got beef chow fun, house fried rice, Mongolian Triple, salt and pepper pork, and Hong Kong style fried chicken. Everything was seasoned well, maybe more on the milder side, but definitely not bland. We were actually quite impressed by the flavors, especially coming from a place that didn't look popular or modern. Chow fun texture was right. Noodles were bouncy and not soggy. Beef tender and seasoned well. More beef and noodle than bean sprouts. Impressive, because a lot of places we've seen throw in tons of bean sprouts to make it seem like they're giving you big portions. Fried rice was good. Again, lots of meat and the rice was well seasoned and has a nice wok char flavor. Mongolian Triple has beef, chicken and pork. It was actually the more seasoned dish of all the ones we ordered, which is great! Salt/soy = yum. Great flavors and char. The container was packed! Also, it comes with wire rice. Definitely worth it if you like Mongolian beef. Salt and pepper pork was great! Some places give you slivers of pork with lots of bones. This place gives you nothing but chunks of meat! Crispy, salty, spicy, deliciousness! Hong Kong style fried chicken. Honestly, never had HK style fried chicken, but was curious. It looks like chicken katsu, but more crispy and using plump chicken thighs. On the side, it comes with sauce. It is a lightly sweet and gingery mix. Reminiscent of the sauces you get at Peking bbq places, but with fresh ginger and less sugar. Very nice gotta day you get A LOT of chicken if you order this. All in all, my husband and I are very happy. We have enough food to last us a few more days, because the portions are generous. Price is decent too. Flavors great. Ive tried my hardest to be happy with this place. Arrived at 4 pm. I drove for miles to get there passing other chinese food along the way. They said they dont make combo plates after 3 pm. Im so hungry and wanted chinese food so much. But i cant order a whole order of rice and sides just for myself. TF Why would you turn away your customers empty handed and hungry. A hidden gem. I ordered pick up and the food was piping hot and absolutely delicious! I ordered Hot and Sour Soup, Shrimp Fried Rice, Beef Chow Fen, Walnut Shrimp [Lunch], and Garlic Eggplant with Tofu [Lunch]. Hot and Sour Soup isn't spicy. There were no options for heat so if you like yours with a little kick, I recommend adding some cayenne powder. There were a lot of mushrooms, tofu, and egg in this soup which was great as other places usually have it mostly watery with limited fillings. Shrimp Fried Rice was plentiful and loaded with shrimp.Beef Chow Fen was great with a good amount of fat noodles and beef. It also comes with bean sprouts and white onion. Walnut Shrimp [Lunch] came with an egg roll and steamed rice. It is really crispy and flavored with sauce and walnuts. Garlic Eggplant with Tofu [Lunch] also came with steamed rice and egg roll. We really enjoy the food from Rising Sun. The dishes are very tasty with appropriately sized proteins in the dishes we order. We love their dumplings and cream cheese wontons as well! When you choose to eat Chinese take out type food ( one, two, three item combo stuff ) you have to have certain expectations for the food. Don't kid yourself, the food will not be healthy. It will be greasy, and will almost certainly be MSG laden. Rising Sun has a sign that says they do not use MSG... but the food was a tad salty. My guess is.. the recipes need tweaking after replacing the MSG with salt. Ordered a two item combo with Black bean fish ( extra $1 ) and beef/broccoli. The food was pretty good although just a bit salty as mentioned earlier. You do get a ton of food for the money. I am slightly ashamed of myself for eating it all in one sitting. If the food was a tad less salty, I'd probably bump this to 4 star. As it stands, its around a 3.5 so I just left it at 3. read more

Went during lunch time in the middle of the week. There were flies around the food, took a peek at the kitchen and saw a huge stack of pots, pans and woks stacked with the water running. I went in on a Saturday about 4 p.m. So my first issue was this - from the door, it appears that this is a "fast food" type of place where I can order 2 or 3 items with rice and chow mein in addition to the items and pay a reasonable price, which is exactly what I was looking for when I walked in. However, upon actually walking into the door, I noticed that the food trays were empty, and so I thought they were closed. But, as it turns out, they were not and I was told that on the weekends, they only serve from the larger (a la carte) menu, which is not what I had wanted because then I immediately knew that my options were going to be limited. I was eating lunch alone, so I definitely did not need multiple a la carte items that tend to be a lot of food. So that was a bummer right off of the bat, but I was already inside, so I figured fine, I'll just order one dish. So I opted for the chicken chow mein, small white rice, and cheese fried wantons, which came out to about $16. The won tons had a little bit of a sweet taste, which was different than other places that I've had. Well, they usually have a very subtle sweetness to them, but these ones were sweeter than usual. I can't really say if it made them better or worse, it was just, different. The chicken chow mein was okay. Nothing spectacular, but not inedible. The upside though was that it came with a lot (as I suspected and thus why I only ordered one entree). I don't typically eat a lot, so the chow mein lasted me two lunches and a dinner (all eaten for one). So it could probably feed at least 4 people, so that was good. But, here was my major disappointment: the white rice was under-cooked (MAJOR sad face). Anytime white rice is under-cooked is a sad day, but I would not expect that from a restaurant. It was still a bit hard and had the under-cooked flavor. When I rewarmed it, I added water and covered to steam it, and it was still a little raw :( Yeah, it's only white rice and not the main dish and it was inexpensive, but it's the side to the other stuff and so this was a let down. Overall, I don't think I will be back. I wouldn't say not to try it if you're in the area, which is exactly why I did, but if you want multiple options (like a 2 or 3 item plate), do not come after 3 p.m. on a weekend or you will have to order a la carte. Also, if you're far, I'm not sure it's worth a drive. But, again, I am not saying you shouldn't try it if you're interested. However, I think I will just stick to the place I know that is down the street from my house. read more

We love the food here. I've lived in Lake Forest for a few years and had given up on finding the "right" Chinese restaurant. Until... We were next door catching Pokemon and looking for food and found Rising Sun. They are very similar to Lucky Chinese in Fountain Valley if you've ever been there. Very large portions which they pack to go in reusable plastic consumers with lids. No styrofoam yay! We usually get the house special chicken, and we've tried lots of other food items and they are all very good. I like this better than Pick Up Stix lol The owners are very nice people and always throw in free won tons. Damn it Rising Sun why you feed my addictions?! I have to say, I think this is the CLEANEST Chinese take out place I have ever been to. They have both a steam table, you know-like at the mall where you can get two entrees and a rice or noodle for $XX, and a full size take out menu. Seeing as I was really hungry and the wife was too, we got the Pad Thai noodles and a second dish of Curry Chicken. Let me start by saying the Curry was excellent. I am always skeptical about Chinese Curry as my wife is from Trinidad. They know curry in Trinidad. This curry dish had the curry flavor but with a Chinese flair. We ordered it medium to hot. Next time I will order hot spicy. The thin potato pieces were cooked perfectly. The right amount of chicken and a health portion of sauce. Very good. The Pad Thai was above average. Tasty and filling. The two dishes came out to $18. We ate dinner and there is still enough for two more meals each I think (if my wife doesn't finish the curry. She is snacking on it right now). Lots of food. It near my work in a nice little shopping strip mall in lake forest. Being semi-new to the area, this was a new find for me. I don't usually go to Lake Forest but I am really liking that plaza. Wouldn't mind living near there either. Right now I live near Sprouts and the only "Chinese" is Panda or Grand Garden Bistro. I've worked in the area for almost 5 years; I've only eaten here twice. The first time was maybe 2 or 3 years ago. It was fast, but kinda bland tasting. I went again today and I was disappointed yet again! The food at the steam table looked fresh, but I asked for a sample and it was actually a little cold - might have been good if it were actually hot. So I figure the orange chicken was a safe bet. Ordered it to go, and was slightly warm when I got back to work (maybe a mile away) but the rice and chow mein were cold - and bland, again. I probably could've had better chinese food if I went down to the end of the plaza to Ralphs and got something from the freezer section...at least it would have been hot when I got it out of the microwave. read more

Some months ago I went to Rising Sun and was not overly impressed, but this week I went back and ordered from the small, but wonderful, selection of items from the lunch counter. This is a very small cafe, with only 2 folks working, the cook and the wonderful overworked woman behind the counter. I ordered the Hot and Sour Soup. It's cold outside and this soup is Hot in a very spicy good way and sour in a wonderful satisfying way. I would go back for this soup alone. The chow mein wasn't fancy, but it was really good as was the BBQ Pork. Just remember, you might have a little longer wait with only 2 people working, but I am willing to wait a bit for really good food, and this is the best Chinese I have had here in Orange County for a long time. I finally felt that this was something close to really good take out places you can find near San Francisco. It isn't Tao Tao in Sunnyvale, CA or the Far East Cafe in Chinatown, San Francisco or even Ho Chows in Fremont, CA, but it is really really good and authentic and the soup will really warm you up!! So stand in line, be patient and kind (just two folks remember), because the wait is worth it. read more
