My artist, Tyoni, listened to the options I presented and help me decide. She did a tremendous job with my tattoo. If you're looking to just get a tattoo without feeling like a sexual object steer clear of Rise Above Tattoo Co in Montclair. The artist I went to get tattooed by is Tommy Borbora or @/tommy0mega on instagram. From the moment I sat down in the chair, his behavior was off-putting. He made inappropriate comments and touched me in ways that made me uncomfortable, e.g. telling me that I look stunning for my age (im fucking 19), I could come over sometime and check out his studio room since he plays music, and he even grazed my ass on a few occasions too! and thats just the tip of the iceberg.. I tried to brush it off at first, thinking maybe it was just their way of being friendly, but as the session went on, it became clear that this was not the case. When he went outside for a cigarette with his coworker on our break, I went into the bathroom and almost puked at how gross I felt and clearly nobody in the shop even cared about hearing how he was talking to me. When he finally came back he mentioned about how Ive been taking this tattoo well and asked if I could take something else well if he asked nicely, I tried to laugh it off with him but all I wanted to do right there was scream and leave. He also continued to touch my thighs inbetween adjustments when I was only trying to get my arm tattooed. We had a 4 hour session and it was the longest and most uncomfortable thing ive ever put myself through. I even had my best friend come by by the end of the session so I wouldnt be alone walking to my car or even being alone after that experience. I had originally seen JoJo's work on instagram (@Joannanguyenart) and totally fell in love with it. After several weeks of lurking her instagram feed I hit her up and inquired about getting a piece done. I had an idea in mind, but no specific specifications (besides wanting it on my leg and incorporating some Daffodils into it). Joanna was very friendly and after a few hours of communicating via text message I booked an appointment with her. Yesterday was the big day! On three hours sleep I drove over 60 miles to go see her. Rise Above tattoo is located just South of the 10 freeway in Montclair - I live up in the Chatsworth/Simi Valley area; that should say it all! Everyone in the shop was incredibly nice, friendly, and welcoming. The shop was also immaculately clean and everything was unwrapped and set up right in front of me. Joanna showed me the completed sketch (she had previously sent me what she had so far in text) and it was beyond amazing - everything I could have hoped for and more! The tattoo took several hours to complete, but during that time we talked about music and life and she let me take breaks every time I needed. Nothing felt rushed at all, and Joanna was a work horse! She didn't take any breaks until I was ready to take one. Her level of detail is incredible, she meticulously checked her work and she was very light handed. The price of the tattoo was also amazing! Quality work does cost, but for the size of my tattoo and the level of work put into it the price was very, very, very, very amazing. The end result is better than anything I could have ever dreamt of! She managed to take the concept I have thought of forever and brought it to reality on my skin! So ecstatic! read more

I got my "first ever tattoo" done on my back here about a year ago. I requested for 5 Chinese characters to go down vertical on my spine but was recommended to have it next to the spine instead. I remember telling him I wanted it straight... Later when I was able to show off my tattoo my friend confronted me about the placement. He basically told me that my tattoo was really slanted. Impressed with her work I sent her a message and she was very easy to communicate with and very nice. Great experience here. We walked in, the place was super clean. The artists there were friendly and helpful. We wanted a wedding band with Roman numerals but they explained that with his skin and the placement of the band with thin lines that it was a bad idea and wouldn't last. And then instead of just turning us away, they totally helped us brain storm some ideas and actually thought up a really great design that incorporated my initial into my husband's band. Chris completed the tattoo in less then a half hour (prep and clean up) and it looks amazing. (Posted pics) The artists there have great personalities and really make the experience worth while.
