Luxuriating in the funky, laid back, dive bar, beach shack koolness that is Riptides.
    Gary I.

If luxuriating in funky, laid back, dive sports bar, beach shack koolness is your ultimate dream, then Riptides is the right place. The food here becomes a good accompaniment for their drinks which in my eyes makes Riptides an American version of a Japanese Izakaya or Spanish Tapas bar. On top of tons of various beers on tap as well as a fully stocked bar and "Hail Dude, well met" attitude, Riptides surprisingly has great food mainly due to the owner who hails from Southern Florida hence the "casual American style food with Caribbean influence" although a little bit of Hawai'i sneaks in for Pacific influence. 1) I was floored by the Cuban Sandwich more known as Media Noche. It's Panino style in that the French bread is toasted in a press so the bread is initially slightly warm & crunchy. The fillings are generous and impressive: a) three thin slices of cured, cooked ham b) thick layer of slow braised, moist, smoky pork that has textures of North Carolina Pulled Pork or a wetter version of Kalua Pig Hawai'ian pork. Do I sense a bit of dill herb blend and a hint of a fruity gastrique like apple cider vinegar? c) two slices of Gruyère style cheese adds a dairy richness d) smear of mustard for earthy, aromatic piquancy e) very dill flavoured sour pickles add an enlivening acidity This sandwich is extra thick and chock full of the above ingredients, especially the delicious, meaty braised pork. This sandwich is already halved and could feed two people. 2) You can choose a side so ordered their Onion Rings and glad I did. I usually get onion rings that are Japanese Panko breaded for extra crunch. However, the beer battered onion rings here are exemplary. The batter is delicately thin, extra crispy, almost ethereal. The onion itself is thick, sweet from caramelization so the mouth feel is creamy, silky. It's almost like eating onions in Soup à l'Oignon Gratinée/French Onion Soup. 1-2a) Couldn't decide on what beer would pair with this food combo so I asked Bar-T Amanda, who is friendly and always busy since she is the one man operation holding down the bar, for advice. Amanda suggested Pacific Beach Ale House Down to Hop | West Coast IPA 7% ABV with aromas and flavors of sweet tangerine and mango along with a bit of funky, dry, bitter, herbal hops. Thanks for the suggestion that worked well mating strong flavours of food & drink against each other. I must come back for the Calamari Fritti with Remoulade sauce; Classic Hamburger; Blackened Garlic Shrimp Salad; Huli Huli Chicken basted in Japanese Tèriyaki sauce. 5 stars for fantastic food with chefly touches in a dive bar with a quirky personality. Just don't come in expecting the Addison.

Neighborhood bar with friendly service featuring a couple pool tables, about a dozen TVs to televise the games, and a great sound system. Good spot to watch football games especially if you are a Packers or raiders fan. What's sets this place apart is the food. I tried the pork birria tacos and they were legitimately quite good. Cheese is pan fried on the outside of the tortilla to make them crispy, the pork is very tender, and the birria dipping sauce has a nice spicy kick.

Classic dive where everyone is friends with each other and the staff. Food was amazing, highly recommend the tacos. The vibe was great, March madness was on, people were playing pool, and met regulars who have been coming for 9 years. Definitely will become a regular myself!

After Sandbox Pizza & Wings vacated this internal corner suite in Pacific Beach, a short-lived bar and grill took over. Riptides PB is now the new business that opened its doors last month. The owners have brought a SoCal skater and surfer vibe to the establishment. A couple of pool tables were also added to the dining area which were not previously present. The one-page menu featured fry baskets, salads, burgers, chicken, plates, and fried seafood as the main categories. I decided on a Grilled Fish Sandwich which was served on a brioche bun with a side of french fries. A choice of cheese was included so I picked American. The grilled fillet was decent, however the quantity of fries needed to be increased for the price of the item. Plenty of staff were on hand during my visit, and they were all quite friendly. The bar scene in PB is competitive, and I can't say that Riptides has a prime location. They will need to do some outreach and advertising to draw in more customers. I gave a 3.5 star rating for my experience and rounded up because of the service I received from the bartender who took care of me.

I really enjoyed it here. Friendly service and cool vibe. A great selection of beer on tap. Got their sampler appetizer and it was a great value if you compare the prices of the individual items. The chicken strips were probably the best I've ever had. They were seasoned PERFECTLY! Definitely recommend.

This is no ordinary bar food! We decided to try it out based off the reviews! This place did not disappoint. Had the burger and Huli huli chicken sandwich. Both were awesome. Customer service was great and the place was clean. Great pit stop!

Cute sports bar / restaurant vibes, love finding cute places like this. The service was friendly, quick, and food was delicious. It is more bar food but good. My boyfriend and I tried the pork Birria tacos, the Cubano sandwich and onion rings so good m, I have pictures attached... Mind you had already started eating before it did look prettier initially

Rolled through Pacific Beach for an afterwork cocktail and stopped by Riptides. They are super new; new name, new ownership, new vibe. It seemed like the perfect little spot, and it was. Since it was still early, I was lucky enough to grab a parking spot on the street (meter parking). It wasn't too busy yet- which was exactly the vibe I was feeling. Again, I just got lucky since it was early. This was a dope little bar! I briefly met one of the owners (Paul) who seemed super chill, even though he was running around doing owner-type things, assisting the staff anyway he could, and mingling with customers. I also enjoyed mingling with the other folks there. Everyone I met and interacted with were such good people. Good vibes. My bartender's name was Cherise. Let me tell you: Cherise is the bee's knees! She was slinging drinks, taking/handing out food orders, keeping the bar clean and stocked, while also managing to continuously serve her customers and keep her patrons entertained. Yes... yes, I 'KNOW' that's her job- but we've all been to bars before where the bartender just cannot multi-task. This wasn't the case at Riptides. Cherise is like the Cirque du Soleil of bartenders. She can make 6 different drinks at once, while doing a handstand, spinning a plate on a stick, and juggling limes WHILE slicing them mid-air. Hard to believe? Ask her to show you. But she only does it once each shift, so if you missed the show, I'm sorry. So if you're in the area and looking for a spot with good people, great drinks, delicious bar food, and excellent service; head into Riptides to see Cherise and the all the crew! Amazing staff! Thanks again, Riptides! And thanks Cherise for being an EFFING awesome bartender! (Thanks for the laughs!)

Our bartender Mike was great, and may Mai Thai ($14) defiantly did what it needed to do. It was sweet, strong and served with the cutest bear-shaped glass with a beautiful purple flower on top. One drink had a girl feeling tipsy. We ordered from the late-night "midnight Bites" menu, which was the only thing we could choose from at the hour of our visit. Everything we selected was really good. Wed got the Frito Pie ($12), Chicken thigh tenders ($7), and Tots ($7). The frito pie presentation was my second favorite part (after the bear glass drink), It came in a all-clad style bowl with the chip bag cut open inside, loaded with Texas-style chilli, melted nacho cheese, and shredded cheese. It was so good I even started adding tots in there too. The tots and Thigh tenders had the perfect crisp! They have sweet and sour chili sauce for dipping with the chicken which was fab! The retro decor made the place even better. I loved seeing the old Blockbuster VHS tapes and music cassettes displayed around the bar. My little eye also spot the Dallas Cowboys flag! Texas energy is definitely in the house. There's also a small arcade area in the back, and my eyes instantly lit up seeing PAC-Man. We didn't get to fully explore the game room because we were trying to make it to Ghirardelli Ice cream & Chocolate shop for dessert before they closed at midnight too. Thankfully everything worked out perfectly since our car was parked right in front of Ghirardelli. NO military discount was honored here even though the owner is a veteran, but overall I still had a really good experience and would definitely come back whenever I'm in the Gaslamp district in SD, Cali. (Oops posted it on a smoke shop in Texas. This review was meant to be shared here) Update: Response to owner: Joe V. That was the best response from any owner I have ever received!!! When I entered the restaurant around 7:00 PM, I was stopped and questioned extensively by security regarding my service animal. Rather than being asked the limited ADA-compliant questions permitted by law, the interaction became prolonged and uncomfortable while staff repeatedly attempted to determine whether my dog was a "real" service animal or simply an emotional support animal. I remained waiting at the entrance while this was repeatedly discussed back and forth. What made the situation especially humiliating was that another patron openly laughed at me during the interaction while walking outside for a cigarette. I later realized this same patron had her own dog inside the establishment in a stroller the entire time. Staff members appeared very familiar and comfortable with her, and multiple employees, including my waitress- referred to her as a "regular." Although her dog was eventually moved to the patio area, the contrast in how the situations were handled made me feel singled out, embarrassed, and unfairly scrutinized. I later spoke with management in hopes of resolving the matter respectfully. During that conversation, I was surprised and concerned to hear that neither management nor staff were familiar with psychiatric service animals or their protections under the ADA. Psychiatric service animals are legally recognized service animals when trained to perform disability-related tasks, and this lack of awareness was deeply concerning, especially in a city like San Diego with a large disabled and veteran community. I fully understand that businesses are allowed to ask limited ADA-compliant questions regarding service animals, and I also understand that many establishments have dealt with individuals falsely claiming pets as service animals. However, there is a significant difference between appropriately verifying a service animal and making a disabled customer feel publicly interrogated and humiliated. The overall handling of this interaction lacked professionalism, sensitivity, and basic understanding of ADA service animal protections. No customer should feel mocked, scrutinized, or publicly embarrassed simply for entering a restaurant with a legitimate service animal. I sincerely hope this situation can serve as an opportunity for additional ADA education and proper service animal training for staff moving forward so that other disabled guests do not experience similar treatment. I would appreciate being informed of any steps the restaurant intends to take regarding ADA compliance and staff training before I determine how I would like to proceed further. Thank you for your time and attention.

Thank you, Jesse; we truly appreciate how wonderful you are. The cleanliness of this bar is impressive. Watching sports here feels just like home, yet uniquely exciting--big screens, great food and drinks, and even better company. It's truly a priceless experience. Free and convenient parking.

Plenty of street parking even for a 1pm game start! Unlike places like Gaslamp, PB, Hillcrest I was pleasantly surprised! ADD 1 STAR Great outdoor seating area both covered and also out in the sun. Huge outdoor screen for the game too. Plenty of other tvs around the bar! ADD 1 STAR Plenty of water stations to help keep you hydrated! Even dog bowls for your 4 legged friends! ADD 1 STAR Staff were friendly and welcoming and always came around to clear our table. My only issue was the food. I was so disappointed in the smash burger. What's up with smashing the bun into a hard pancake both top and bottom bun? I've had better tasting smash burgers but I can get a better one at Jack in the Box and for $10 cheaper. It was so underwhelming I didn't even want to take a picture. The tator tots were awesome! Perfect crunch and spice....so flavorful! The women's bathroom is a little strange and quite frankly a waste. Two toilets set up side by side like how urinals are. This only works if 2 close friends are in there. They could easily make this 2 stalls and keep lines to a minimum. So 2 toilets but really just 1 women's bathroom.

The crust was crunchy and sauce was flavorful, but it had about 4 little bits of chicken on my slice. Food came out hot and I liked the laid back vibe of the place.

Whether I'm popping into the Golden Hill spot or making a stop while visiting friends in IB, the result is always the same: consistently great pizza and zero regrets. There's something about walking in, scanning the case, and immediately deciding you need at least two slices--ideally completely different, because why limit yourself? Our go-tos? The White Girl and the OG Crime Scene. Both are standouts for very different reasons, and we somehow convince ourselves every time that adding a "new slice for research purposes" is the right move. It always is. The crust hits that perfect balance--crispy, chewy, and sturdy enough to handle all the goodness on top without falling apart mid-bite (a true art form). One of the few crust I eat from end to end. It's casual, it's reliable, and it delivers every single time. We've been loyal to the slices so far, but the rolls and other menu items are calling our name--so safe to say, we'll be back soon with more "research" and another review.
