Alpaca Nation

Week One of our Random World Culinary Adventure. We have a bowl of about 50 different cuisine and food types, and once a week (schedule and budget permitting) we draw one and go there. The first week was Peruvian. Having been here years ago (not sure if it was the same name) I already knew at the jump that this was our destination. This is an unassuming place in a strip mall, off Lake street. Upon entering you are greeted with, frankly, a beautiful bar and restaurant. The Alpacas are a great touch. We started off with some yucca cheese balls, tropical ceviche and bruschetta. We are still raving about the bruschetta a few hours later. The cheese balls were also amazing. Ceviche was fantastic, but we could have used a few additional plantains. For our meals we had a Arroz Con Pato (duck), Chaufa (a wok), and a Fettuccine à la Diabla Con Bife (steak and pasta). The best of the 3 was the Fettuccine (aka steak and fettuccine). The steak was cooked perfect, the entire thing had amazing flavor. The Arroz Con Pato looked nothing like the menu. It was very good, albeit with the duck being more on the dry side. Flavorwise though, very good. The wok, same deal - looked nothing like the menu. However the person eating it was pleased and that's all i care about. For dessert we had a passion fruit mango cheesecake which was delicious but so rich, not sure I've ever said that. Benefit to it being rich was that I brought it home to eat at my leisure. The spicy churro cake was also a hit. Service was great, it was lunchtime and one woman running both front and back of house but she did great. We loved it, and will return.

This is my first visit here and it was for a birthday party luncheon for a small private group. While we seated in the back of the restaurant, it appeared that there was another small birthday party luncheon for a small private group seated right next to us, so that was a little interesting and then this lunch went quite long, so their regular patrons started coming in as well and we're seated all around us. It is located in a really cute strip mall area so there is quite a bit of parking and it is shared so it shouldn't be much of an issue. They even have some outdoor seating which is very nice, especially when the weather is warm. The menu is absolutely authentic Peruvian with a great selection of meats as well as seafood. The lunch menu only had a few choices. However, everyone was very pleased with all of the choices from the fish the chicken as well as the beef. The soup I will call out was definitely a pleasant surprise and fantastic because I got the shrimp soup, and there was no scarcity of shrimp. It was easy to find the shrimps. Everything has some really great taste and we also got to enjoy some Peruvian soda. This is my first time trying it and it definitely taste like a mix between Mountain Dew and bubblegum very tasty and very sweet. I would come back here again to try out some of the other menu items as the ambience was nice and clean and friendly. It's not far from my home. Parking was easy and the service was friendly.

I visited Rio's Restaurant for the first time with a friend on a Sunday evening, and what a fantastic discovery! We sat outside on the patio, which had a lovely atmosphere. We started with the Ceviche Rio's, which was packed with flavor and absolutely delicious. Then came the Conchitas a la Parmesana (broiled scallops) oh my god, they were incredible! Both dishes were beautifully prepared and bursting with taste. The menu is huge, and I left with a long list of dishes I still want to try. The service was great attentive without being intrusive, which made the experience even better. Thanks There's also plenty of parking right out front, which is always a plus. I'm so glad I found this hidden gem. Can't wait to go back because I definitely will! See you soon Rio's!

Great Peruvian food, the menu has pictures and detailed description of ingredients. Highly recommended.

Cheesecake de Maracuyá - A photograph shows a slice of cheesecake with a caramel topping and a small amount of caramel sauce on the plate. A dollop of whipped cream is placed beside the cheesecake. The dessert is served on a white square plate. In the background, a glass of water with lime and a straw, a spoon, and part of a person's arm are visible, indicating a dining setting.

We were looking for no nonsense steak and this was the place we selected. Had the Bife de Chorizo which was fabulously tender and quite an enjoyable experience. To end the meal Cheesecake de Maracuyá which has a magic sour and sweet that is so enjoyable.

Service here is so slow. Our reservation was 5:30 for party of 10. We stood for 30 minutes by the bar. We were seated by 6pm. They didn't serve us bread until 6:30. We got our appetizer at 7:15pm. When we asked how long for the meal they said another 25 minutes. So it took 2 hours to get our food. Ordered old fashioned... not so good. It's the wrong ice when it's supposed to be a cube so it watered down. Mojito was okay. Sangria was not so good. Olive Garden's Sangria tastes better. Ceviche was creamy and not your typical. Everything else was okay. It's the type of place you would only go once. Overpriced.

Rio's is such a gem! Fantastic food and great vibe. When the weathers nice, I recommend sitting outside as they've created a real nice space out there as well. We came here on a Monday to celebrate my husbands birthday, it was also our first time but have heard it's a knock out. We really enjoyed everything! Very authentic South American cuisine, the service - albeit was severely understaffed - our waiter/bartender/host was phenomenal! He made sure our experience was top notch! I highly recommend if you love some good South American food!

Cute restaurant, small but inviting bar. Nice decor throughout. Authentic mural & fun faux alpaca family for all your photo op needs. Apps are delicious. Drinks are superb. Pisco Sour with passion fruit is a must try. Espresso Martini is good if you like it creamy, but it wasn't what we were looking for. Meals are very good. Some portions are ginormous. Most likely if you get an app you could share a main dish. Unique and authentic menu. Our servers were knowledgeable, kind, timely and friendly. I would certainly try it again and the food was a great adventure for your palate!

This is easily my favorite South American food place. Every dish I got was perfectly cooked and the quantity was high despite it being a pricier restaurant. Quality- the duck, potato, breadsticks, tacos, and steak was delicious. Everything was cooked just right with seasoning. The steak and duck with rice was my favorite. It was cooked a perfect medium rare. The dipping sauce they give for the breadsticks has a nice spicy kick to it followed by a sweet aftertaste. I could stop eating those the whole time. Quantity- very good for price and quality. Each plate is enough for more than a person. Atmosphere- clean interior and outdoor seating is great. Service- top tier service. Great servers and waitresses. The owner is incredibly nice too and served us himself.

Parrillada de Mariscos Dinner - A seafood pasta dish with calamari, mussels, and other shellfish, garnished with chopped herbs, served on a white plate. The dish includes toasted bread slices around the edges and is accompanied by small bowls of dipping sauces. The presentation suggests a seafood-focused restaurant setting.

We were four and decided that two Smalls and two Mains would be a fine amount and it was. If you as a group are big eaters, maybe an extra small, but use this as a guide. The Smalls were the mussels (about a dozen) with such an incredible and hard to describe, taste. The other small was the NAPOLEON BUENOS AIRES, also unusual and special. For the Larges, we shared the SALMON A LA BRAZILEIRA and VENEZUELAN CARBONADA (no meat eaters here). Also a bit difficult to describe, but take my word for it, very special. As we were headed to an event with desserts, we didn't try any here (and also no one was drinking tonight). Would love to come back and try if I'm in Chicagoland again. Just go!

Came with friends and could not hold a conversation because with other tables filled it was so loud. Parking was hard to find, ended up parking four or five blocks away. For the price and experience, would not go back.

This is meant to be your crazy expensive birthday bash or celebration, not an every day place. We are lucky to have a gem like this in Schaumburg with very busy servers who try their absolute best to give you a flashy service with delicious food. Are you seriously expecting this to be $50 meal for four? No way. There are many places you can get the same thing. Every time I've gone here, I've spent good money that I worked hard for, and have had great memories in the process. If you're expecting a simple Mexican restaurant, this is not your place. This is high end and very busy. Make a reservation, call in advance to make sure it's set. OpenTable is used by many restaurants, so you can't blame this restaurant for OpenTable's mistakes. The Los Tres Huastecos was PHENOMENAL. The Camarones Calavera was really fun to watch, experience, and eat. I don't drink, but my family loved their flashy drinks (the Deseo was their favorite). They made sure my father felt special on his birthday with a sash, a custom menu (which we requested for in advance with our reservation), and most servers took a moment to say happy birthday even when they weren't serving our table!! Chris was a fantastic server who despite being very busy, did a wonderful job with his service. I won't defend a place for no reason; I truly had a wonderful time that deserves its praise. I research everywhere I go, so obviously when my paycheck hasn't cleared, I'm not going here. But you also wouldn't go to Fogo De Chao or Hell's Kitchen and expect it to be as cheap as my burger at a Chili's (which I love as well). (Also for the comments about the guac, I do agree, but I've also seen the same size portion at other chains for the same price. *cough* south of the boarder *cough*)

Just a heads up, it does get pretty loud--but in a good way. The music, energy, and overall vibe really bring the place to life, so if you're into that lively atmosphere, you'll love it. We went all in and ordered one of the giant shareable drinks for our group of six. It was definitely worth it for the experience, though a bit light on alcohol given the size. Pro tip: order a round of shots too--they serve them in this awesome airplane presentation, which just adds to the fun. Food-wise, everything was really solid. The octopus was a standout--perfectly cooked and super flavorful. The only letdown was the salmon; the portion felt a bit small for an entrée. Overall, great vibes, fun presentation, and a perfect place to celebrate with a group. Would definitely go back for another occasion.

We also had the roasted red pepper spread, which everyone enjoyed. Two of us ordered the Ultimate Steak Sandwich. I opted to removed the caramelized onions. The other person let them on. I also removed the garlic herb sauce but replaced it with a chimichurri sauce. That really kicked it up a notch and was good for dipping the fries in. They're fresh cut fries, so they were good on their own, but the chimichurri again kicked it up a notch. We also ordered the chicken bowl, the avocado salad, and the Greek style lamb chops. He must have been on the phone with his dad or mom because he said he had a customer and ended with an "I love you". All good. But I stood there long enough to hear that all play out, waiting to order haha. Anyway the funnier thing was he said "I'll have it to you in under 20". Which I thought was a funny way to phrase when my food would be ready. Like this could be a comedy bit almost. Usually you try to instill confidence that food will be out right away, not establish an upper limit for the time frame haha. Whatever, it was a kid. Also it took 21 minutes (per my receipt time stamp vs watch) The serious part tho... food review. 1. Jibarito was 7/10. Decent flavor on the steak but lacked a bit more. I wont blame the sogginess on the restaurant, it was a long drive home. I put it in the air fryer later. 2. The rice was salty - and I usually like salty. Also more wet and compounded, while also being a little dry like it was from the bottom of the pot? It's hard to explain, but I didn't love it. I wish it had more peas and maybe some pork and less seasoning TBH. 3. Maduros was my side - it was good. 4. Beef pastelilos - 7/10. They were the puffy kind, but more hollow than I'd like - i.e. meat to air ratio. But they were overcooked. I could taste the burned-ness of the dough and it didn't sit well. 5. No tostones - they were out. but a funny story is about 5 mins into my waiting another worker came in, so I could hear them talking in the back. The prior kid said something to the effect of "oh we are out of tostones".. "but I can figure something out". Like it was possible to make... the tostones... which weren't available to me at the time of my ordering... I kind of had a "hell naw" moment, but decided to suppress it. Net net, I ate half my jibarito because it was big. I could not eat anymore rice because it was too salty. And I had one pastelilo because now I'm full. One suggestion - make some pique. I asked for some hot sauce as I received my order and all they could offer were generic packets of what is probably louisiana style hot sauce. I want that habanero pique!!! I think it'll help, at least cut through some of the salty TBH. Also work on the service and timing. 20 mins is too long for 1 jibarito and sides. Thanks!
