We met friends at Rios this past weekend. I would give Rio's a little more than okay, but not good enough that I would come back. Service was good - and they have live music on Friday nights. For drinks, we had white wine and passion fruit pisco sours. We've had better pisco's however. For appetizers, we shared the scallops and the Ceviche Rios. All four of us loved the appetizers and the complimentary bread that came. For entrees - my husband and I shared the Milanesa a la Provenzana and the Arroz Chaufa De Mariscos. Went to the Valentines Special tonight - what a huge dissapointment. 1) Turn the music DOWN. Jesus could not even hear my date, and fast paced dance music is not what I want to hear for a "romantic evening". We even asked the waitress to turn it down - which they did for one song then right back up. Could not hear each other at all. 2) Fire whomever got the wobbly outdoor iron tables covered in paper. Cmon now, you want to advertise classy then put out $10 tables really? We could not even cut our food without fear of a glass tipping over. We saw multiple couples complain of same. Try to act fancy you can't buy bargain basement furniture. Horrible. 3) They forgot our wine until the very end - uhhh would have been great with dinner esp as it was included in tickets. 4) A 20% automatic gratuity??? Really??? This alone makes us not want to return. Our service was horrible - and we are good tippers. To have that mandated and a surprise on the bill is a no go for us. 5) Fire whomever did the baby blue decor 6) Get rid of that table right at the front door. Week One of our Random World Culinary Adventure. We have a bowl of about 50 different cuisine and food types, and once a week (schedule and budget permitting) we draw one and go there. The first week was Peruvian. Having been here years ago (not sure if it was the same name) I already knew at the jump that this was our destination. This is an unassuming place in a strip mall, off Lake street. Upon entering you are greeted with, frankly, a beautiful bar and restaurant. The Alpacas are a great touch. We started off with some yucca cheese balls, tropical ceviche and bruschetta. We are still raving about the bruschetta a few hours later. The cheese balls were also amazing. Ceviche was fantastic, but we could have used a few additional plantains. For our meals we had a Arroz Con Pato (duck), Chaufa (a wok), and a Fettuccine à la Diabla Con Bife (steak and pasta). The best of the 3 was the Fettuccine (aka steak and fettuccine). The steak was cooked perfect, the entire thing had amazing flavor. The Arroz Con Pato looked nothing like the menu. It was very good, albeit with the duck being more on the dry side. Flavorwise though, very good. The wok, same deal - looked nothing like the menu. However the person eating it was pleased and that's all i care about. For dessert we had a passion fruit mango cheesecake which was delicious but so rich, not sure I've ever said that. Benefit to it being rich was that I brought it home to eat at my leisure. The spicy churro cake was also a hit. This place is a.hidden gem! We walked in this place by accident thinking this was a different place. We were pleasantly surprised by the South American (Peruvian, Argentinian, Ecuadorian etc). Everything was delicious. We had empanadas, my wife had fettuccine with steak, I had seafood fried rice kind of thing, it was great and the seafood fresh. They also had $5 mojitos on Friday. This is my first visit here and it was for a birthday party luncheon for a small private group. While we seated in the back of the restaurant, it appeared that there was another small birthday party luncheon for a small private group seated right next to us, so that was a little interesting and then this lunch went quite long, so their regular patrons started coming in as well and we're seated all around us. It is located in a really cute strip mall area so there is quite a bit of parking and it is shared so it shouldn't be much of an issue. They even have some outdoor seating which is very nice, especially when the weather is warm. The menu is absolutely authentic Peruvian with a great selection of meats as well as seafood. The lunch menu only had a few choices. However, everyone was very pleased with all of the choices from the fish the chicken as well as the beef. The soup I will call out was definitely a pleasant surprise and fantastic because I got the shrimp soup, and there was no scarcity of shrimp. It was easy to find the shrimps. Everything has some really great taste and we also got to enjoy some Peruvian soda. This is my first time trying it and it definitely taste like a mix between Mountain Dew and bubblegum very tasty and very sweet. I would come back here again to try out some of the other menu items as the ambience was nice and clean and friendly. It's not far from my home. Amazing dinner with business colleagues! Rio's checks all the boxes for great South American cuisine. From the empanadas to the ceviche to the beef, Rio's really captured the culinary essence of the region. Had the NY Strip (Bife Chorizo). Perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I visited Rio's Restaurant for the first time with a friend on a Sunday evening, and what a fantastic discovery! We sat outside on the patio, which had a lovely atmosphere. We started with the Ceviche Rio's, which was packed with flavor and absolutely delicious. Then came the Conchitas a la Parmesana (broiled scallops) oh my god, they were incredible! Both dishes were beautifully prepared and bursting with taste. The menu is huge, and I left with a long list of dishes I still want to try. The service was great attentive without being intrusive, which made the experience even better. Thanks There's also plenty of parking right out front, which is always a plus. I went on a date to this restaurant the food was great the atmosphere was great.. but he serves need to work on their people skills. I understand you are tired. The restaurant business is hard, however that should not affect the way you treat customers and on top of that expect to get a big tip. We left a $15.00 tip on a $50.00 total. The food is incredible! We took 2 Argentine-born family members and it brought back memories of food they grew up on. All the appetizers were great-we got the salmon ceviche, empanadas and duck tortillas. All the entrees were really tasty -steaks from Argentina, lamb, seafood pasta plus chicken Milanese and Mac and cheese for the kids. The desserts were all so yummy -unfortunately they were out of flan. The staff were very nice and tolerant of the 7 kids we had with us in our party of 15. I'd leave zero stars if I could. My husband and I came here for New Year's Eve tonight. Our server, Tony, was barely there. We tapped the bartender a couple of times to get service. She was great. My entree came out cold after almost 2 hours and the steak was a thin slice of beef that was overcooked and also cold. The server offered to re-make it but Service was extremely slow and it was obvious the kitchen was in trouble so we did not want to wait for an hour more while they re-made an entree. Our waiter gave us a round of drinks but our dinner was 375 (four course menu for NYE) and half of it was not good. We asked that they take my entree off the bill but the server refused. We asked to speak to the manager and was told he was "out sick". Also the ad said dinner included wine and party favors which we did not receive. We have been coming here for years for dinner and lunch and this was our second NYE. Last year was wonderful which was why we came again for this event. We will not be returning. Terrible. Service here is so slow. Our reservation was 5:30 for party of 10. We stood for 30 minutes by the bar. We were seated by 6pm. They didn't serve us bread until 6:30. We got our appetizer at 7:15pm. When we asked how long for the meal they said another 25 minutes. So it took 2 hours to get our food. Ordered old fashioned... not so good. It's the wrong ice when it's supposed to be a cube so it watered down. Mojito was okay. Sangria was not so good. Olive Garden's Sangria tastes better. Ceviche was creamy and not your typical. This is easily my favorite South American food place. Every dish I got was perfectly cooked and the quantity was high despite it being a pricier restaurant. Quality- the duck, potato, breadsticks, tacos, and steak was delicious. Everything was cooked just right with seasoning. The steak and duck with rice was my favorite. It was cooked a perfect medium rare. The dipping sauce they give for the breadsticks has a nice spicy kick to it followed by a sweet aftertaste. I could stop eating those the whole time. A friend and I brought her mom here for a birthday surprise dinner on a Friday night. We were able to make reservations on their website but it wasn't too busy when we arrived. We ordered a variety of passion fruit cocktails that were sooooo good. A lot of the cocktails were rum based. For appetizers, we ordered the empanadas and jalea de mariscos which is lightly fried shrimp, fish, calamari and octopus. They also brought free pieces of toasted slices of bread paired with a side of chimichurri and another salsa that was so spicy but so good! We ordered a few entrees to share like the parrillada casera and the parrillada de mariscos. It was sooo much good we had a hard time finishing it all but the steak melted in our mouths. The plate of mariscos also had so much flavor and came with a ton of food. The service was also impeccable. I would recommend everything we ordered. They also had a great dessert menu with spiked coffee cocktails and other items like churros. We were so full but at the same time couldn't help ourselves. Oh! And how could I forget. We went for dinner on my birthday. And what an experience it was! First, I cannot figure out why their reservation system does not send out an acknowledgement even though the webpage says that an acknowledgement has been sent. When we arrived, the hostess mentioned that there was live music, and whether we wanted to sit close to the performers. We chose to sit away, since we wanted to have an intimate dinner. Carlos was our waiter. By the time the cocktails arrived (nice, BTW, I recommend the watermelon picante), the loud volume of the music had started to bother us. We were literally shouting at each other to hear each other across the table. By the time the appetizers came out, I had started to develop a headache from the loudness of the music. I asked our waiter whether the live music volume could be turned down a little. Big mistake. His body language immediately became hostile, and he walked away in a huff. I had stepped away from our table for a short time, and my wife told our hostess that it was my birthday, and that she observed that at another table, they brought out the dessert with a candle while the band sang Happy Birthday. She wanted the same at our table, and the hostess said that she would notify our server. By the time the entrees arrived, I was feeling so bad at the loudness of the noise (it had devolved into noise by this time, Sabine's Law), and just wanted to leave. We had a few bites of the food, and asked our waiter to pack up the rest. Now, any other place would have had the server enquiring whether everything was alright, but our server immediately brought out boxes, placed it at our table. No offer of dessert. My wife specifically asked for the dessert menu. He grudgingly brought it out, and we ordered dessert. The dessert comes out, sans the candle, or any mention of a birthday. My wife went off the table and tried talking to Carlos, and he said that yes, he had received the note from the hostess, but it was his discretion to do anything or not. He had raised his voice, which is when I became aware that he was arguing with my wife. I get it, satisfying the larger group ensures that you get the big tips, but this isn't a bar or a dance floor. And I wasn't charged any less for putting up with the headache and a sore throat from shouting over the loud music. They showed us such a good time that I HAD to share my experience. Maybe next time I will reserve under the name of Speedy Gonzales to be served properly. read more

I'm on a "cultural foods tour" of restaurants near Chicago - area Universities that train speech therapists. Elmhurst's Koplin Hall, the home of the University speech clinic, is less than 10 miles from Rio's on Lake St. The restaurant has an impressive bar, with its decor peppered with South American colors. Today I had the tacos pescado a lo ceviche, flounder in a soft tortilla with ceviche sauce and caramelized sweet potato. The taco was substantially filled, and all ingredients were expertly cooked. I've been going there for years since I moved to Chicagoland, it's conveniently located across the street from the Marcus theater in Addison IL which I frequent and the food and atmosphere is everything you could want from a classy fine dining experience. Bold flavors, quick, attentive and friendly service, decently priced, and a very extensive menu of dishes and drinks to try and enjoy. Highly recommend the Picada Rio's, Lomo saltado, Chaufa, Duck, and the Alpaca-- you won't be disappointed. My only knock against them would be the cocktails the last couple times I've gone are VERY light on the alcohol. Considering that these are $10-15 drinks, I expect at least a perceptible amount of liquor in them. Still, that aside it's not enough to drop a star. Went for a date night with my wife on Saturday June 17th 2023. We arrived approximately 15 minutes early and were immediately greeted and seated at an inside table. Since it was a beautiful evening we asked if we could be seated at an outdoor table. Lucky for us our hostess was able to seat us outside. The restaurant is perfect for a date night or and intimate gathering. We started the evening with appetizers and drinks. We ordered a glass of Sangria (generous pour) and I tried an Argentinian beer (Quilmes) which I will now add to my home rotation. Our appetizers were two Papa Rellena's, cooked perfectly and very tasty, and two Empanadas Casera, that we tasty but a bit dry. For our dinner we decided to share a Parrillada Casera, which consisted of three steaks. While the steaks were cooked as ordered (medium rare) they were all a bit tough. I will say that our waiter Carlos was great! We will return to try the large selection of appetizers and another Quilmes beer. read more

This is a cozy and intimate spot! The decor is very warm that it gives off a very calming and relaxing space for a meal. This is a great place to whine down at. The service was great - our server was attentive and gave recommendations which we did take. The pisco sour was good, I didn't really feel any of the alcohol in it though. I had the Moqueca de Pescado as an entree and it was pretty good! The sauce was delicious and mixed with peppers, yuca and onions. It is also served with rice. The fish itself was a little dry. I am going to attempt keep this one short and to the point. First and foremost, I want to start by stating that Tony's performance was an absolute disgraceful performance. Quite frankly, he was unprofessional. Last weekend, my lady and I traveled all the way from Chicago to (attempt) to eat at this establishment. Key word "attempt." When we arrived there was only one other group in the entire restaurant. It was a party of four or five people, therefore, it was not busy at all. We were seated by a waiter named Tony. That was literally the end of our service. My lady and I read through the entire menu, then we had to decided on what we were going to order. We waited, and waited, and we waited for Tony to return to our table. In fact, we had a taste for some ice cream later so we started to Google ice cream parlors in the nearby area, essentially waiting for Tony to return to our table. After waiting for about 20 real-time minutes, I walked over to the bar and asked the lady if she could alert Tony. I literally heard her inform Tony (who was on the other end of the bar that we were ready and he needed to return to the table. I returned to my table, And we waited ... And we waited ... And we waited... Then, we see Tony nonchalantly walk to and from the kitchen area. Still, there was no service. Again, this place was almost empty, with the exception of one other party of four or five people. Literally, that was it. After 30 minutes of real-time waiting for Tony to return to the table to take our order, we slowly started to gather our items and put on our coats. As we started to walk towards the exit, Tony was seen laughing, joking, and having a casual conversation with some gentleman. It wasn't until he saw us about to walk out the door, before he finally attempted to acknowledge us. Tony asked if everything was okay, I told him he clearly seemed preoccupied. Tony clearly didn't care. His performance or lack thereof was absolutely disgraceful. Quite frankly, he refused to serve us. He didn't even have the decency to apologize or to attempt to make it right. My lady and I will never return to this establishment. For folks that are looking for some real Peruvian food, I would highly recommend trying Taste of Peru in Roger Park. read more

We were on the hunt for an Argentinian steak house in the burbs and landed on Rios. We went before Christmas and it was well decorated with some lights and cute items. The restaurant was empty when we arrived so we were seated quickly. We ordered 3 dinners and some appetizers. The food came quickly although we had to change one dinner order because they ran out of something. They seated a large group for a Christmas party and also had some musical entertainment, a couple who sang and played guitar. Food was flavorful and large portions but we were plagued by gnats during our meal which was really off putting.. and not just one or two flys, there were kind of a lot. Overall, the food was good and service was friendly but the gnats really deteriorated the experience. All things considered, I don't know that we'll go back because ultimately, it felt like they'd missed a deep clean or had some other sanitation issue with all the gnats. read more

Hidden gem in Addison tucked between a Panera and Starbucks! Arrived 5 minutes before the kitchen closed, Tony the bartender steered me to the veal stew. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. I had to try the empanadas with turned out to be the best I have ever tasted. They were accompanied by a great chimichurri sauce. What we ate was delicious especially the jaleo de marisco and duck empanada style appetizers. The problem was the service we received. The waiter started out attentive but as the time went by he disappeared. He didn't check in to see if we needed anything and I almost got up to look for him for water refills. After we received our entrees and finished eating, took another 20 minutes for him to show up for dessert orders. After eating dessert, took him another almost half hour to come back so we could ask for the bill. We looked for him and saw him sitting at the bar talking on his cell phone. It was during the week and there were only three other tables with customers. But what really annoyed us, a table of five, was there is a mandatory tip of 20 percent on the bill for bad service. So although the food is delicious, we've been here before and always consistently good, I'm not giving someone a mandatory 20 percent tip for bad service so I will not be back. read more

My husband and I went to Rios this past Wednesday. I have always really loved this place and our visit was no exception. We both ordered steak, I had the skirt steak and my husband had the fillet. They were out of skirt steak so they substituted Brazilian grass, fed, equivalent, cut of beef, which was actually better than skirt steak I have had in the past. Our waiter was quick, friendly, and made great suggestions. I love the decor here because they have wonderful high ceilings, and a very elegant ambience. I had a cava with my meal and for dessert we split a gelato. I think it is the very best dinner location within 10 miles of our house, and we chose it over several other very nice places that we know would have likely been over crowded and understaffed. I also like that they are able and willing to do substitutions if you may have a dietary restriction of any kind and they are exceptionally gluten friendly with gf items marked on their menu, although you would never really notice as far as the quality and taste of the food.
