We took the one hour beach ride and it was great. The horses were well behaved - absolutely no problems. The guide, Azalea, was friendly & patient. The 5 of us were all horse people during our lives ranging from 10 years ago to a few days ago. Azalea was nice and didn't laugh at our old bones climbing up on the horses. I had Walter and he was a good boy. The gentleman that I spoke with on the phone, Russ, before making our reservation was understanding with my questions ie. "I'm old, do you have a mounting block?" What can I say? This experience was amazing! Booked online with no troubles and received a confirmation e-mail shortly after. We didn't have a hard time finding the place, but just as a heads up, someone stole the business sign so as soon as you turn on to the correct street it is the first ranch on the corner! We were quickly greeted by Russ and were pleased to find out that my friend and I were the only ones who made a reservation for the day so it made our first horse back riding experience that much better! Russ was informative and shared previous experiences from past riders to help us feel more at ease for our first time. You do have the option to wear a helmet. You can bring your own, use one of theirs or opt out. Regardless of choice you will have to sign a waiver. Once the waiver was complete we picked a helmet and a horse. I chose Walter my friend chose, Zez. Russ demonstrated how to properly get on and off the horses as well as how to halt and guide the horse while riding. This was so helpful to us! There is a stool to help you on and off the horse especially for shorties (like myself). We chose the ocean ride. To get there we crossed the road and went into the woods for a bit and took the same way back. Russ was patient with the both of us and helped to make this experience unforgettable. Walter was patient with me and I was so grateful to have gotten to ride him! Zez has a sassy personality of her own and fit very well with my friend lol! Once we got back to the ranch Russ and his son Andy introduced us to some of the other horses on the ranch as well as the ranch cat, Thor and the two ranch ravens. The whole experience was great. 1. The horses appear to be in poor condition. 2. This is not a "tour". It's a horse walk, nose to tail, single file. If you want a tour, go elsewhere. I booked because I wanted to ride on the beach. We were on the beach for less than 5 minutes of the two-hour walk. The lead engaged with us in response to my questions. 3. The lead horse "slipped" on asphalt with all four legs buckling and scraping the knees. 4. I needed to use the mounting block to get on and off the horse. I was having difficulty with the dismount and when informing the staff of my apprehension did not get the necessary assistance (there were three staff present and I was the only person on a horse) to avoid landing on my back. The staff was apologetic, but frankly, I just wanted to get in my car and leave before something else went wrong. read more

Absolutely fantastic. I've done a lot of trail rides in my day, but this one was something a little extra special. Taylor was our guide and she was a literal breath of fresh air for me. Made great conversation and reminded me how much I miss the horse world. My husband, a beginner with only a few rides under his belt, rode Cloud who did her job perfectly. I rode Natasha, who was stellar. She was responsive and exactly what I was looking for in a trail horse. Not dead broke with her nose stuffed up the horse in front of hers' butt. This ranch was located just 20 min North of our B and B in Mendocino. They had a slot on the public tour for Sat at 930am and we ended up being in a group with 4 other people. Upon reserving they do ask for your height, weight, and age so they can get you on an appropriate horse and possibly due to weigh restrictions, didn't ask. Emily was our wonderful guide. She was always smiling, engaging, knowledgeable, and gave friendly instructions on guiding the horses. She led us safely across the road and then into MacKerricher State Park for a little trail ride through the woods and then along the beach and even onto the beach for a little bit. She will get off her horse and take pics of your group if you want. We could even see seals on the rocks in the distance! The whole experience lasts around an hour from saddling up to sliding off (purposefully, of course!) It was $60 a person and tip. My equestrian experience is limited but my wife barrel raced as a youth and we both thoroughly enjoyed, so this is definitely a fun time for all levels. read more

We took the 2 hour "beach ride" and it was just my husband and me with our guide. The 2 hours included time putting on the free helmets, mounting our horses and getting instructions, then the ride out and back. 2 hours was just about right. I had reconstructive hip surgery 13 years ago and I could feel it on the horse. Any longer than a 2 hour ride and my hip would have yelled at me. I had Jazz and he had Poncho. Jazz was pretty mellow and Poncho was a bit more rambunctious but not scary. My husband actually had to manage Poncho, not just sit passively while the horse slept through the walk. Poncho tried to eat grass or go his own way then would need to trot so they could catch up to us. Jazz also had to be managed but she was easier than Poncho. Our guide kept the instructions short, easy to understand and very useful. The ride included both a forest and beach ride. We got down for a ride in the sand but most of the ride was up on a trail along the beach or in a forest and along a paved road. I hadn't ridden in at least 40 years, so it was a little intimidating at first but I got the hang of it as did my husband. There was no galloping, just walking. read more

I took my tour today around 1pm with two of my friends. We drove a little under 4 hours to Fort Bragg for the weekend and my friend had done these tours before and signed me up as a surprise! I pulled in and immediately was unsure of what I was about to endure. We did the one hour trip through Mackerricher State Park and I have never in my life been to such a beautiful & relaxing place. Growing up on the East Coast this gorgeous landscape was something that was totally new to me! The guide Harl was so kind and remained calm during the entire trip. He conversated with us but not too much where it had taken away from the overall experience. I have not been on a tour like this before so I don't have anything to base this off of but i really did enjoy my time and would recommend this trip to anyone who is thinking about it!! One of the best trail rides I've ever done. We walked down to the beach and then along it, for a total of one hour. The views were breathtaking, especially the waves crashing against the rocky coast. We also saw adorable baby squirrels, deer; and lots of interesting plants and dunes. There was a little bit of waiting while the horses got pepper for the ride, but it was well worth it. Was planning on exploring Fort Bragg over the weekend, and I found a deal for Ricochet Ridge Ranch through Travel Zoo. I called on a weekend to make a reservation and the man on the phone picked up right away and was accommodating. Overall a very easy process. The day of our ride, our two guides were welcoming and very knowledgeable about the horses. I like that they provide helmets and they make you watch a safety video beforehand. Our guides seemed to truly love the horses and knew so much about them (such as their personalities). I rode Voltaire who was a bit of a slow poke who required a bit of prodding but overall he was a sweet fella. Our ride was smooth sailing and had incredible views of the ocean. At the recommendation of the guides, since it was very windy, we only spent a few minutes on the beach itself, but they were able to quickly get pictures of everyone. Overall, for the price and the fact that the horses seem to be treated well, I would come back again! Pro tip: Bring some apples to thank your horse after your ride! Makes for some good photo ops as well. read more

We had very awful experience yesterday may 29th 2023. Thank god, my family and friends are alive but my wife suffered severe injuries, I got shoulder pain and my little son got scared and walked alone for a mile. I had two reservations on may 29th one at 9.30 am with party of 6 and second is at 11.30 am with party of 4. We are 3 adults and 3 kids (7, 9 and 11 years) and told no one has experience on riding the horses recently. I got horse named Murphy, my friend was on a horse named Charlie, my wife was on Voltaire with two assistants. My friend's horse is crazy and jumping on other horses from the beginning but the owner convinced that it will behave well on the ride. My friend's horse gave little trouble on the way but he was able to manage. On our return, again the same horse went crazy and jumped onto my wife's horse. My wife's horse jumped off the road and started behaving wild and threw my wife down and started running. By seeing that my horse Murphy started running behind and I got scared and helpless. Kids started screaming and crying. I told to drop all kids down immediately but he dropped only my seven old and he forced my severely wounded wife and me to hold the horses and walk. We are in trauma and completely don't know what we are doing and left with no choice but to follow his instructions. I was really helpless and made my 7 years son to walk alone for a mile and wife with those wounds. My friends were waiting to go in 11.30 am ride but hearing this, they backed out with no refunds though the problem is with the horses and the management. Again he is trying to convince my kids and us that the ride was good but mistakes happen. Now my wife is unable to move and her back, hands and left and right legs are severely aching. I'm looking for the doctor appointment. If you are new, please don't pick this horse back ride. Very unclean and unprofessional. read more

We booked a 3 hour private redwoods forest ride and it. was. AWESOME!!!! I can't wait to go back for another ride here. It was a completely unique trail ride experience because we had the freedom to really ride a horse and let them do what they love to do (run!) and not just be passengers on their backs riding nose-to-tail. Heads up that we were only able to lope/canter through the woods because both my husband and I have some riding experience/have taken several riding lessons, so keep that in mind if you've never ridden before. Ok, so I'm not gonna lie. When we first drove up to Ricochet Ranch, I turned to my husband in the car and said, "Umm, where have I taken us??" LOL. It's definitely a humble, "shabby chic" type of ranch but I don't judge a book by its cover. We met Harl who was like an old school rancher straight out of a movie, with a cool, dry exterior, deep voice and barn drawl that I loved. He's the kind of man who makes you confident that you're in good, strong hands. I rode a chestnut mare named Murphy. She was alert and a little spicy like most of the chestnut mares I've ridden, but a sweetheart nonetheless. My husband rode Charlie and liked him. We trucked over to the redwoods and started a gorgeous ride. Both my husband and I were able to canter full speed in spurts throughout the ride-- what a JOY and RUSH that was! Harl always checked in with us to make sure we were comfortable and safe. I've never had so much fun on a trail ride. The only small unexpected thing we had was when we encountered a group of folks on the trail in an ATV. When the driver turned the motor on, it roared really loudly and spooked both my husband's and my horse (and me!). We both had to react quickly and firmly to get the horses back under control but we handled it and everyone was OK and remained safely on their horse. These things happen on the trail every now and then-- horses are sensitive 1,000 lb animals, not go-carts, so sometimes they react to unexpected things in their environment and we who are privileged to be on their backs have to be responsible for ourselves. We walked on without a hitch and got to the top of an open hill that had forest and ocean views and it was incredible. Harl gave us all sorts of recipes and restaurant recommendations along the ride. He was awesome; we really enjoyed our time with him. We met locals along the trail and were able to chat. The barn clearly needs more workers but Harl did an amazing job and we were so appreciative of all his hard work. We highly recommend Ricochet and would be happy to return! A must do in Fort Bragg. We had a 9:30am ride with Emily, and couldn't have had a better experience. Everything from scheduling the ride to riding the horses was made so simple. We did the 1 hour ride and got to ride through the woods and onto the beach. Emily made sure everyone felt comfortable the entire time and I personally loved asking her conversations about the horses. They horses have so much personality and she knew each one of them so well. Emily took pictures of us on the beach with the cameras we brought along. The entire staff is so helpful and make sure they put your safety first, but don't hesitate to ask questions. They're so polite and kind, made us all want to take a longer ride since they made us feel so welcomed. The views were stunning, and Emily even pointed out a family of deer in the woods about 20 feet away, and some seals at a distance along the beach. Highly recommend this for family, kids, or even a nice getaway weekend with your significant other. Just be honest if you're signing up online or even in person when it comes to your ride experience. They provide helmets if needed, and also ask you for your age, height, and weight. They ask your age to make sure you're over 18 and don't need a parent/guardians signature on the waiver, and they ask your height, weight, and ride experience to pair you up with the right horse. So if you want to enjoy the experience, make sure you're honest so they find you as perfect of a match as possible for your safety, and the horses. Don't sign the waiver. March 2023, while my husband and I were riding a couple of the rescue horses I was thrown from the horse, Charlie. I suffered a burst fracture on my lumbar 1 vertebrae, fractured four ribs, have needed crowns on three cracked teeth, got a concussion, tore my abdominal aorta, and lots of bruising. No help from the guide, he asked if I could get up, a passer by offered to drive me down the mountain. Our guide was off his horse at the time Charlie bolted. When I reached out for help with some of the medical costs the answer was that their waiver protects them. read more

Only giving 1 star because zero isn't an option! My boyfriend and I had reserved a family horse back riding session for the first weekend of April as a birthday gift to our son. The person who took our reservation stated we could wait and pay on the day we reserved, but we opted to go ahead and pay up front. Unfortunately our son was bitten on the finger by our cat which got severely infected just days before our reservation. My boyfriend called to cancel before the weekend and was told the original $600 we paid would be refunded. Several days later we hadn't heard anything and didn't see a refund to our account. My boyfriend called again and was told it could take up to 10 days before the amount is refunded. We waited over 10 days, have called numerous times, almost daily, and are now at 5 weeks since our original phone call cancelling our reservation. We have only had someone answer the line a few times out of the many calls we've made and are told the refund should not have taken this long and they will get to the bottom of it and call us back. No call back and now they aren't even answering the phone. I even sent an email on 4/27 that was never replied to. We were very eager to try and book something at a later time, but not after this. I don't like to give bad reviews on businesses, especially on a public forum, but at this point I'm at a loss on what to do after making every possible attempt to rectify the situation privately. read more

To start, I can really appreciate that they had us watch a safety video, and they advised us to wear helmets. You can tell they're passionate about what they do, and that the horses are well taken care f. The staff was great, and the horses were wonderful. The ride was an easy and casual one, which was right up our alley. On the way back, some kid flew by on a razor scooter, and the horses got spooked. Luckily nobody got hurt, but someone did hit their head on a branch. Luckily, she decided to wear a helmet. Our guide handled it as well as she could. It was a dark, stormy night... Ok, actually it was an overcast, drizzly saturday early afternoon. Introducing an inexperienced rider to the equine art, I tried to stifle my laughter at the look of utter fear on his face as he managed to climb atop his horse, Rocky. By the end of the ride he was sneaking trots in whenever the guide wasn't looking and had a grin a mile wide. The ride was awesome, through the woods for the first part and down on the beach for the majority. We saw a doe and her fawn, a wild hare, seals, several sea birds, and even a ground squirrel despite the crappy weather. Because the weather was so blah, we actually got a private ride for group ride prices, never a bad thing. For those who have never ridden, they have a very helpful instructional video and a wide selection of helmets to wear if you choose. I was on First Class (despite being the shortest shit ever, I always end up with the biggest horses) and he was a spirited thing; you can definitely tell that the horses are ridden less in the winter. It was a great experience, a good long ride, and excellent guide/staff. read more

Let me tell you the pros...horses were awesome, Jenna, our guide, was super kind and I could tell that the other guide, Vida, was pretty patient with a first time rider (me:). I was scared...I'll be honest...my horse (Roller) was humongous and completely more knowledgeable about being a horse than I was... I'm a 'heavier gal' so of course I was worried about mounting, dismounting...there's a riders block and Jenna completely encouraged me. When we got here, she was completely ignored while the gal spoke to the group that was there. She was short and rude, said she would get someone to help her. That didn't happen. Finally I went in and the manager came to talk to me. She said she didn't have any records of us calling. (could it be an hispanic surname?) They could not get her in before the end of her vacation.
