When hiking on the rails, watch for this tiny arrow. It will lead you to some secret giant old growth redwoods.
    Jefferson M.

I'm reluctant to write this review. I want to keep this place the best kept secret in California. When word finally gets out about how magical it is, it will be operating at capacity. It hasn't even had a website for a full year. So it may take a while. Go now! THE BASICS: - Real, clean flush toilets - Warm shower (water heated by wood burning stove) - Delicious fresh clean spring water close to each campsite. - Covered picnic table at every campsite - Brand new double-burner gas stove at each campsite (propane included). - Wood (included) for making a fire in your own fire pit - Kayaks provided. Kayaking on the river is AMAZING. Your campsite is extremely remote. I mean, you are deep in a redwood forest. It's a 45 minute drive on dirt logging roads. Then, the camp isn't actually even accessible by road. It's on the other side of the river. So you actually have to portage your gear over a looong skinny footbridge. Sounds like a pain, but it actually just adds a magical quality. HIKING ON THE RAILROAD Currently, the Skunk Train is not running on this section of the rail. For a short hike, go left (West) till you get to a two trestles back to back. If you go right (East) pack a snack, bring water, and look for a tiny arrow. It will send you into a remote area with some awe inspiring old growth trees. PRO TIPS - There does seem to be about an hour around dusk that the mosquitos love. Mosquito coils help a bit. Keep moving (take a walk) or just hang out in your tent. They'll calm down in a bit. - Book mid-June or later if canoeing is important to your adventure (should be). That's when the dam goes in. - Firewood is provided. But bring your own kindling or old newspapers to get it roaring fast. - To learn more about the history of the area, check out https://www.mendorailhistory.org/ - The best sites: IRMULCO is close to the dam, so great ambient river sounds. And it's more private than Shake City. Alpine is tucked away in the corner of the campground - probably the most private. Summit is the best. Leave that one for me. The River Chalet doesn't seem to have a lot of charm on the inside, but it looks comfortable and is in a great location. See ya out there. I've been twice now and plan to make it an annual pilgrimage.

    River Chalet cabin
    NJ S.

We found Camp Noyo online, and we decided to go ahead and give it a try. We booked the River Chalet cabin. Since the Skunk Train is no longer servicing Camp Noyo, we had to drive in via a dirt road. The normal dirt road that Camp Noyo uses happened to be closed that weekend, so it ended up being a 40+ minute drive on the dirt road to get to camp. Knowing that we were going to drive to Camp Noyo, I assumed we would be able to park right next to the cabin (or near it at least), so we were surprised when we pulled up with a loaded minivan and 4 small kids to realize that we would have to carry everything and everyone across a fairly narrow wooden bridge that was not flat. It was a full-on workout to get it all across! There are cabins on the side of the river that we drove up to, but those aren't the cabins or the campsites that other guests were using. They seemed to be occupied by family and friends of the owners or perhaps used for larger groups. Once we got settled though, we fell for the charm of Camp Noyo. The cabin is very rustic, and the beds are creaky and old, but we all slept well. The whole place has a summer camp feel to it - kayaks available at your whim, shared space for doing dishes, etc. There are some lovely walks/hikes right by the campsites. Since the train isn't in operation, we walked along the train tracks in either direction. The owner, Allen, was so kind and shared lots of history about the camp and the surrounding area. A note about the cabin: there is electricity, and it was reliable. So, there was a spot to charge a phone (though there's no cell service) or to use a hair dryer. There were a few games in the cabin, and several chairs to use outside. We had to be even more vigilant around the fire pit than usual because there wasn't a ton of walking space around it, and the ground sloped downward. We had to reach out a number of times to steady our kids so they wouldn't stumble into the fire pit. But we all survived, and the kids are already asking when we're going again!

    Fun for everyone

Camp Noyo is the best place to go camping. Love going here and having a quiet, peaceful weekend with friends and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings!

Great camping spot! A bit of a challenging drive, but well worth it for the beauty and isolation. Very friendly staff.

Ask the Community - Camp Noyo

    Do the cabins have bathrooms?

No, the cabins do not have bathrooms. There is a common bathroom/shower/dish washing station with hot water in close proximity to all campgrounds and cabins. Potable water is available at or within a few steps to each camp ground.

While the property is…read moreprivate, the owner goes around daily taking photos of occupied campsites and posting them on the campground's blog without notice or consent. Nowhere on the property or in the conditional use agreement we signed does it state that photos of guests will be taken and shared online. When we confronted the owner around 8:30 PM on our last evening and asked him not to post our photos (especially of our underage children), he became defensive and accused us of being "aggressive" simply for voicing our concerns. Things escalated, and at 9:30 PM he returned--unnecessarily late, especially with children present--just to inform us that our account was closed. His behavior was rude, intimidating, and unprofessional. Aside from this, the park itself has several issues we wish we'd known about beforehand: *Showers: Small stalls with only a plastic curtain, and the coin dispenser is on the opposite wall--requiring either a towel maneuver or walking across the room unclothed to insert coins to start the shower. *Bathrooms: While they had paper towels and toilet paper, they ran out of toilet paper twice during our 5 day stay. Maintenance staff (who were pleasant) came by a few times but didn't restock until another camper asked. There was no soap in the dispensers, but store-bought soap bottles were left out (unclear if by staff or guests). *Women's bathroom: The first stall (handicap) doesn't lock properly and is only held closed by a magnet that can easily be pushed from the other side. *Dishwashing: No proper dishwashing area. The sinks available were being used for gutting fish, which felt unsanitary. Based on our experience, the owner is unreasonably confrontational and dismissive of guest concerns. Instead of resolving issues professionally, he resorts to blaming guests and creating unnecessary conflict. His behavior made our stay uncomfortable, and we will not be returning or recommending this park.

Unfortunately we heard a sound coming from the engine area as we pulled into our site, and it did not sound good. The campground and sites were immaculate. My husband enjoyed looking at all the fencing and swing sets that we found out later Travis had built from the down redwoods on the property. We enjoyed playing corn hole and visiting our neighboring campers. As we started to leave the following morning, the sound was louder. Our friend who was traveling with us is very mechanical. He thought it was the air conditioner compressor. Travis came to the site and agreed with the assessment. Travis knew people in town, but it was Sunday. They allowed us to stay another night. Travis came by in the morning after making calls for us and took our friend to town to get the part. The part had to be ordered, Travis allowed us to stay another night to wait for the part. Travis and our friend Kyle picked up the part and we thought we were set! The two of them put the part on, but they needed another part (a serpentine belt). Of course, the part store said it would be in the following day. Once again, Travis allowed us to stay another night. The following morning Travis and Kyle went to town to get the belt. The two of them worked on it and had us up and running. As we pulled into our next campground in Gold Beach, I received a text. It was Travis wanting to make sure we were ok.
